- All materials from local home improvement store including hard to find metal screen that has 3.4 mm holes. I have made several bottoms boards before, and so far this one is the best design and easiest to make. I used western red cedar dog ear fencing boards, metal screen that is usually for a house foundation ventilation.
Small Hive Beetle or SHB (Scientific name: Aethina tumida) could be very devastating for any apiary.

Just when I think I have seen you do everything, I find another video of you doing bee hives and anti-SHB bottoms too. Amazing. Did you have an awesome Dad or Grandfather who taught you all of this?? Or are you self taught? So many talents. You should be quite proud of yourself. My Uncle had honey bee hives. I love the taste of honeycomb...my Grandmother used to tell us it was nature's candy. She taught me to be an organic gardener and how to cook from scratch. She lived to be 103 yrs old. I feel so lucky to have been able to live next door to her and learn her wisdom. I miss her terribly. Thank you for your fascinating videos.

Instead of using oil I use garden type lime. Oil is messy and can become rancid. When the hive beetles get into the lime it kills them because it dehydrates them. Easy to replace, isn't messy, and doesn't become rancid.
Really good woodworking there. I have found however that vegetable oil kills the beetle but doesn't actually kill the larva. You'll see some floating around in it, but the ratio is off. People think it's killing them without realizing that a % of them are yanked out by the bee's before they are finished growing. So you will find some dead on just an unscreened bottom board.
So instead of oil I use Diotamaceous earth in the pan which has several advantages. It doesn't go bad, and can be sifted and re-used indefinitely. It absorbs moisture out of the air in the hive which helps the bee's and is bad for mites, great for honey production and summer temperature control. It also kills ALL of the larva which come into contact with it. It will kill the beetles but they will crawl out, die, and get carried off or sometimes knocked back in by the bee's.
Bee's are covered in hair, and can clean it off themselves. Unless they get absolutely covered or dusted with it so just fill the pan away from the hive. As it's kind of like flour in texture and when you dump it out kind of makes a dust cloud. That said combined with a beetle baffle to prevent them from climbing back up into the hive it puts a serious hurt on SHB.
I lost a hive to SHB before going to this method, and watching an entire lecture on SHB by a university researcher. #1 problem the larva escapes and the cycle continue's. So the priority is the larva not the beetle itself because 1 beetle = 12+ larva easily. Bee's control the beetles fairly well themselves unless they are weak. The larva they practically give a free pass out of the hive.

I enjoyed watching you build the anti-SHB bottom. My great grandfather who was German had several farms and also kept bees....I was too young to learn much about them from him, but I had no idea what it takes to keep bees. It looks so easy from afar.
The back door is the most important because the beetles will enter go past the door and tray. They will crawl in breed and some will fall back down. From my own experience. I added a white board for monitoring mites and winterizing. It works beautifully. I don’t leave the white board in all the time.
Instead of some kind of oil, I use lime (powdered lime like you might use in the garden). Vegetable oil is messy and can become rancid. When the hive beetles get into the lime, it kills them from dehydrating them. Easy to replace.

I am from Lithuania, came to US 20 years ago, through those years moved around several states all work related. My all family are animal advocates, specially my mom has close connection to our nature, and I was grow up having many animals.. :)

Hey I really like your Ideal. Just as time consuming as the ones I make, but the back door with side vents are lots better along with using the fence slats would save on cost. Oh but those pesky little beetles really look good in the oil...

Now u got the ideal! Now pour about 1/4" cooking oil in the pan. iI will kill shb, wax moths, and mite and even there larva on contact.... bees can't get threw the # 8 hardware cloth, be sure to have a back door where you can pull the pan out to service the oil trap I INVENTED IT You just became worry free of shb, mites, and wax moths! HAPPY BEE KEEPING : )

I am not a bee keeper, but keeping bees in my neighbourhood is popular. It’s always special to buy local honey. I try to support bees in early spring by having early blooming bushes that they enjoy. We do not mow our dandelions, and local bees do not have to share with Dandie. I’m an artist and I always appreciate fine craftsmanship. Interesting negative grass/foliage designs. Did you paint the camouflage on the hives’s exterior your self?

People can use plywood if they want an easier build. . Some keepers actually make starter hives out of chipboard. . Not widely recommended, but it does the job. .

You missed a few staples. But, I forgave you when you squared it all up .haha Very creative. Wonder if you kept the hole plugs... glued lil knobs on them...if in winter it would help keep hive warmer by popping them back in holes.

Not sure why this popped into my feed after so long but it just seems that small squares of Swiffer dusting sheets in the top corners of every brood box is faster, cheaper, works perfectly and pretty much no mess.
Do both? But the wipes are a recurring expense. Can you reuse them? Just curious
@@TheRainHarvester Comparatively speaking, the time and cost to build just one of these would easily pay for a near lifetime worth of duster sheets. The vegetable oil also qualifies as a consumable and it gets rancid pretty fast.

I'm surprised the fencing sides can handle so much weight. Can they hold 200 lbs? Great idea using vents' screening...i can't find #8 screen !

Does the extra width catch rain and cause rot? I was thinking of using 2x4 sides which would stick out 3/4" around the side edges, but i could cut a slope so the rain drains to the outside .

How's this in the winter
How does this work? I am not clear on it. Do they fall thru the screen? I think if you combine this with the Beetle Baffle it would eliminate or just about eradicate the small hive beetle as a pest to bee keepers
yes, the beetles falls through the screen holes into the oil pan. We do have Beetle Baffles too, its very effective both together, but still not perfect , because I seen SHB flying strait in to a hive combs without landing, and still sometimes finding 1 or 2 beetles in the hive, and few beetles in a strong hive is not a big problem . We keeping those bottom boards year round in Southern California and practically we dont have anymore problems with the SHB
Even though I baited a hollow log, no bees this year. Wasps were here in numbers though. I was stung twice. I did install a passive trap and remove one pond which they seemed to be attracted to. I removed an old abandoned bird house, looked inside, saw nothing and set the birdhouse inside as a doorstop. The next morning my windows were full of wasps. There was a small nest I hadn't seen underneath. Anyone with wasp deterrent info, please send. Happy Trails to all
Wifes bird house building books advise rubbing soap on the inside lid or anywhere they like to attach their nests. I'm thinking ivory soap.
There's a single carpenter (I'm guessing) bee right outside my garage that always shows up in the spring and lasts throughout the summer. It's really annoying because I need to use that area frequently but everytime I go over there it tries to attack me. I don't know anything about bees but I've observed that this bee stays hovering in that spot all day everyday and if another beee comes towards it, it fights it off like crazy, like it's protecting its territory or child. It's really disruptive and annoying because i need access to that spot and it doesn't let me. Haha, I'm a wuss. At night I haven't seen any hive or anything near the garage so I don't know what to do to make it go away. I really want to get rid of it but I don't want to harm it. What can I do?
well .., you need to talk to the bee, tell that you live here too and need to use that area and ask her if she would be kind to share it :) , it may take some time, but eventually she will know you and wont attack you :)

I see that hole below the screen grate starts just inside of the hive entrance..
Would there be any advantage to have the hole below the screen start at just outside the hive entrance, to give an added inch for any entering Beatles or anything else, to fall through ??
Any entrance restricter would have to be marginally wider to cover the entrance, but that should not be a problem. .
Have you ever had the bees 🐝 sting people to help them with arthritis are ms?How many queens do u have?
I have several bee hives right now and I do know about bee sting therapy for arthritis, but never tried it.
great video, the only question is that what did you do with the three aluminum panel that you were using the scissors to cut the screen .
kaz hashemi thank you! from those aluminum panels I took out the screens and used them as a bottom floor at 6:54 of the video that's what I'm doing. This size screen (for the small hive beetle)is very hard to find here in US, you have to purchase a large roll from beekeeping suplay store. So I found out that same size screen are used in ventilation screens that hardware stores sells them.

Wouldn't Crisco be better than than oil sloshing around, spilling and making a mess? Has anyone tried Diatomaceous Earth? It's suppose to kill pretty well I've heard. How would it work to put grease around the top, underneath the screen frame? This way it would prevent mites and beetles from going back up into hive but stay clean from pollen, wax flakes and debri.
Crisco would work too, probably just will need to be checked and cleaned more often. I do use Diatomaceous Earth for under the oil pan, because sometimes beetles or wax moth manages not to fall in the pan but crawl behind it.

In a warmer climate zones the holes provide ventilation to the whole hive. In colder climate probably no need for those holes

Thanks 2018 will be my first year. Im now 67 and really health health 10, 000 daily stepper Bee are on my bucket list. Hive boxes (all mediums) assembled and awaiting paint. Local bees will be ready for me from a local beekeeper.

First it didn’t take me less than hour tii ok make this, second I had to drive to get that ventilation screen and cut it off. And guess what it’s piece of junk ! I like the idea but I would definitely not recommend this type of screen it’s so fragile and easy to brake . I had to go back to the store and buy real wire cloth. The rest of no complains. Thanks
