  • Hey there, beekeeping buddies! 🐝 I'm here to show you a nifty trick to tackle those pesky small hive beetles that just won't leave. Remember the Apiguard treatment we did three days ago? The bees are taking well to it, so now we're back to treat the same hive for Small Hive Beetles.
What's our secret weapon, you ask? It's the trusty beetle trap oil! I'll give you the lowdown - shake it up to mix the oil and bait, use the applicator to place it in the hive, and voila! No more messy spills.
As we check the hives, you might notice some uninvited ant guests - but fret not, they won't disrupt the bee party. Let's get these traps set up, keep an eye on those beetles, and maybe even learn a thing or two. Until next time, Roll That Beautiful Bee Footage! 🐝 #SmallHiveBeetles #BeekeepingTips #BeehiveMaintenance

If you will take your hive tool and run it down the black part of the trap with some pressure on it before you take it out you will kill a bunch of beetles. The traps doesn't set flat and the bees run them under the edge of the trap. ❤️🐝🐕

I wanted to ask about the open feeding short video? Will feeding in the deep with frame feeders keep me from feeding all the other insects that would like some sugar water. Or, are most of the other insects not very active in winter? Also do you feed out of site of the hives to avoid robbing?

it will help from feeding other insects. yes, I like to feed away from the colonies or inside the hive to avoid robbing.

Hello John an Cori . I run a Deep an a Medium brood setup. I have always put two traps in each brood boxes. That bait does it have something in to bring the beetles to it or is just a oil to kill them . I think I have most of my colonies somewhat under control but this has been the worst season I have saw in a long time an have heard a lot people saying that also . Thanks

How do you get rid of the ants?

I sprinkle cinnamon around the base of my hives and it seems to get rid of the ants. I hope that helps.

If you have horizontal hives, smearing vaseline around the legs will deter ants pretty well. In an area without wind, sprinkling talcum powder on the ground will also discourage them, but most people's hives aren't in that sheltered a place.

Heard one of the guys at our local beekeepers’ meetings recommend a protected bowl or plate with a mix of powdered sugar and baking soda. The ants can’t tell the difference and there’s a chemical reaction between their acids and the baking soda. Heard John say “those ants bother you a lot more than they bother the bees” when I was in the store a few months ago but it seems to me that bees in winter is a resource conservation game, and ants are thieves working against the bees.
