Hey David, this is my first time ever commenting on UA-cam. I'm new to bees, so I spend hours on UA-cam trying to learn from other bees Keepers. I wanted to tell you thank you for the great videos and for sharing your information to others. I'm just now getting my hive going so I haven't had to deal with beetles yet, but now I know what to look for and how to treat them because of you. Thank you again.
Bees do a good job heating a five frame hive better than ten frame hive. Extremely efficient for younger bees. I like it. Bees are flying out and doing good. Still lot of snow on the ground. Protect your bees from frost and wind best you can. Beetles are not a problem during this time of year. Good video.
Hey David! Great video! My brother Sam and I will be using this method this Spring to try control our hive beetle problem! We use Diatomaceous Earth last fall but fear that's not enough. We were delighted to see you video and have already ordered our CD jewel case and Boric Acid powder...of course we have plenty of Crisco!
Had them pretty bad in one yard last year due to lack of diligence on deadouts. Basically made my own problem. What helped end it: Gordon's permethrin 10 livestock and premise spray. I mixed up gallon jugs of the stuff and drenched the ground around each hive with 2 gallons. Repeated every two weeks. Did it at night. That and beatle traps worked. It was ugly. One good hive was overcame ...absconded. From now on I'm treating yards with permethrin.
Thanks for the tips man, I'm going to spray underneath like that. Also you said keep them in the sun which I do now but still have one hive in the shade and waay more beetles. I'm is SC and they are pretty rough here as are wax moths.
Hello David I know this is a older video but here in 9- 2023 this is the worst season I have ever had for hive beetles but I am staying ahead of them . Thanks
The CD traps have worked well for us too. I guess we picked the wrong year to start sideline beekeeping. I'll be on top of it next year too. Thanks for sharing!
Great idea. I always wondered if boric acid would work on shb. It's one of the oldest treatments for regular cockroaches here in the south and it's safe for humans. Unfortunately our inspector told us nothing is allowed for pest control inside the hive except what has been approved. I specifically asked about boric acid and he didn't say no but repeated "nothing except what has been approved" so I guess it's up to the inspector. I use beetle blasters too. Work great. I always read about the Hood Trap and wanted to try one but could never find them.
I love your videos, they are most helpful for us newbees. Like the muscles, too. One thing I have noticed is that I often find your video on UA-cam under two different titles. Are you trying to tell us something? Keep us the priceless works, and God Bless!
There was something about "Little Creek Bee Ranch Wintergreen grease patties" that turned out to be this same video. Never found anything about Wintergreen, was wondering if I missed it somewhere. Planning to jump into making grease patties here pretty soon...
Do you assemble your own frames? If so, I noticed you use what looks like 1/8 inch crown staples, where did you get the 1/8 crown stapler which I assume is an air stapler.
@@3_up_moon I had read this too, and froze frames infested with SHB larvae for 2+ months. I took them out thinking surely everything is dead and placed them on a table outside during the summer. Days went by, maybe even a couple weeks and that bag of frames (tied shut) that had been frozen for all that time had tons of larvae squirming around, both small and big. So I don't know exactly why this is being shared as a working remedy.
Crisco is a brand name, what he's referring to is just cooking shortening. Just cooking grease. Boric acid is, well, boric acid. It's generally used for crawling insects like roaches. It's not actually a poison, it kill bugs in a different way.
Yep too docile, if my bees are not naturally defensive I don't want them. scientificbeekeeping.com/whats-happening-to-the-bees-part-4-the-genetic-consequences-of-domestication/#the-cost-of-domestication
David, Can you leave these CD cases in the hive year round or do you place them in the hive for only certain times? Do you have to refresh the mixture in the CD Case and if so, how often?
I never do anything for beetles. They come and go like swarms. Any time they were a problem. Was because the hive had other problems. I fix those other problems. Hive beetle gone.
I use cedar chips instead of white pine chips in my blanket box above the inner cover. Just like the old cedar chest, moths can’t stand cedar smell. The SMBs don’t like it either. Cedar in--pests gone.
dang, that's another thing I forgot, where's those gloves... who wears gloves?? I think it took me about 2 times into the hives before I realized that with the FAT FINGERS, it was hard to manipulate the frames gently.. worst thing about not wearing gloves is the propolis, man that stuff is sticky.. I use them if the girls act up, but like my smoker, they mostly sit to the side until needed... I'm even getting forgetful with my veil, and that was just the 1st season
Dianna Boykin I part time volunteer for my community for bee keeping and these bees might be friendly but I went in with no gloves and no protection and got swarmed as I opened the hive, it was like they knew I was coming to harvest there honey lol, I just don’t want that to happen to this fine gentleman
HONEY HARVEST is a different animal with most beekeepers, even guys I never see with protection, will suit up, several HEAD TO TOE, to harvest... the bees can get a little upset with someone walking off with their stores... where, this is just general manipulation, and most of the girls are OK with that, and David has some of the calmest bees I see on videos.. Thank You for your volunteering
True Smoker ... please, next time you want to write such a comment, put on gloves. and by the way, if you have hives that sting. put your thumb on the queen and press. that's what I do. no tolerance for aggression.

Wow so cool. Are there slots in the side of the cd case?

I spotted the queen before you zoomed in on her! Yay me! 😂
I have been using the disk this year with Great success.

The CD traps have worked well for us too. I guess we picked the wrong year to start sideline beekeeping. I'll be on top of it next year too. Thanks for sharing!
Did you have to modify the cd case in any way? I'm trying to figure out how they'd get in?
Ha! Thin CD Cases, no kidding? That's GENIUS! :D

Gooberment inspecters😂
What oil need for beetle blasters
I hear a lot of people use swiffer sheets, have you considered putting pieces in the cd case, just to help keep them in??
When spraying the salt/vinegar on eth ground, do you add any water to this mixture? How does that much salt desolve in so little liquid?
Dave how often do you use the vinegar and salt mixture?
Great video. I use disk also.
David
What type of boric Acid and where do you get it from
Thanks
Chris

I noticed you use osb wood to make the bee boxes and top. What kind of life do you get from them?
How often do you change out the beetle blaster solution?
Spray solution under hive: 4 C. Table Salt? And 4 C. Apple Cider Vinegar?
Also what’s in the beetle blaster solution? Same as in the cd case?
wonder if you put some quickcrete on the ground under the hives. That might work too.
did you put holes on the side of the DVD/CD case?
Can you put 1 to 1 sugar water in the rapid feeder?
Are you using a gimbal for your camera? Video looks great!
David, could show how you build your five frame nuc.
David. Have you tried the beetle barrier or the beetle baffles? Just curious About these... Thanks for the video...
How many gallon sprayer?
Will this solve if there is a bunch of hive beetle larva?
How do I get a couple of the beetle blaster
They sell em at beetle Bailey's on bay boulevard in Brooklyn bud.
I used diatomaceous earth (food grade) powder on bottom board and around the ground of the hive to reduce small hive beetles.
I would not put diatomaceous earth in your hive! It can harm the bees too.
Do you assemble your own frames? If so, I noticed you use what looks like 1/8 inch crown staples, where did you get the 1/8 crown stapler which I assume is an air stapler.
Be mindfully of outside temp. If not 95 degrees your frame with the queen (nook) might put any brood at risk.
North Georgia in the summer time? No problem, its like they were in an incubator!
Holy shit that's a lot of beetles
In my mind I was thinking....look at all that grossness in the case. Then, no, don't touch the beetle bait... ugh, he touched it. Disgusting! Lol
Ground spray, You say 4 Cups salt, 4 cups vinegar. In a 1 gal sprayer ?
what was your mix for the hive beatles as I have poor hearing and did not hear fully thanks
2 tbs Crisco. 1 tsp boric acid
On your small boxes , why do you not put screens on them for the beetles to fall down thru?
Raymond Broderick hive Beatles fly.
Good question, the small hive beetle’s larva can drop thru the screen and reach the ground to mature.
You sold me, David...what time of year do you install your traps?
Thanks!
my bees keep propolizing the holes shut, no beetles inside.
same with beetle blasters. trying foil straps & no wet.
How do you like that Advantech wood?
Can you loose a hive when you get a robbing situation. I lost my hive and It was right when I put in a inframe feeder.
Do you have a video of how to build that feeder top.
Hey can u add worker bee to a new queen that all ready in a hive with out killing the queen
David,
Do you suggest bleaching or sanitizing the old boxes before re-use when you're doing a swap out?
TheOregonOutlaw most people put them in a bag in the freezer for 3 days to kill any eggs or larvae from SHB or mites.
And waxworms*
So could I freeze the frames them put them right back on the hive? do I need to clean them? Let them rob the frames?
@@3_up_moon I had read this too, and froze frames infested with SHB larvae for 2+ months. I took them out thinking surely everything is dead and placed them on a table outside during the summer. Hey David have you tried the swifer sheets on them beetles?
Steve's Outdoor World how do the swifter sheets work
I had no luck with them.Im still playing other baits in cd cases and i will do a vid soon on that.
So what do you do for TOP BARS, this is all greek to me.
Does borax powder work as well as boric acid?
Does the boric acid and crisco attract beetles, will they eat it?
Yes.
can someone please explain what the two ingredients are as I'm in Australia
Crisco is a brand name, what he's referring to is just cooking shortening. Just cooking grease. Boric acid is, well, boric acid. It's generally used for crawling insects like roaches. It's not actually a poison, it kill bugs in a different way.

Hello I also see like brown bait what’s is that ?
What oil did you use
I took a nearly empty bottle of canola oil from the pantry to the bee storage area for easy filling. Keep it there.
I hate bees. I'm always getting stung! So, why am I finding these videos so cool?
Bees a facinating to observe just be calm when in their presence they dont want to sting u anymore than u want 2 be stung
Agree with John Turner. Don’t fight them and they will move on, assuming you are seeing honeybees.
There was a black bee?
It's a old bee that lost it's hair the color is in their hair
Barak Acid is illegal in my state to use on Beehives. Anyone watching should check to see if it's legal in their state.
Barrack
You painting them CD cases black? What kind of paint?
kevin drury I believe the jewel cases are sold that color.
RDR the ones I seen at wall mart was clear. Reasons I asked.
kevin drury I understand :)
You can probably spraypaint them with outdoor paint.
hi sir would you post feeder to australia melbourne how much for three feeder thanks
Boric acid with crisco
Its late September in pittsburgh, is it to late to treat for mites with vaporing heating pan and oxlaic acid?
Do you mean Borax when you say boric acid? It is really a salt of boric acid.
Not Borax. Got my boric acid in small bottle at pharmacy years ago. Guessing you can still get it there. Of course there’s Amazon.
Wow american bees are realy docile here in brasil if you get close to the hive you will get atacked
Yep too docile, if my bees are not naturally defensive I don't want them. scientificbeekeeping.com/whats-happening-to-the-bees-part-4-the-genetic-consequences-of-domestication/#the-cost-of-domestication
Hey, what is "chrisco"?
Vegetable shortening... Like, for baking.
Vegetable lard.... Idk what else it's called lol
David, Can you leave these CD cases in the hive year round or do you place them in the hive for only certain times? Do you have to refresh the mixture in the CD Case and if so, how often?
We have same problem in Central Europe 😥😥😥
I never do anything for beetles. They come and go like swarms. Any time they were a problem. Was because the hive had other problems. I fix those other problems. Hive beetle gone.
you don't live in Texas
Nope tn..
natserog
Darn right beetles are bad here in Texas.
I guess they are abundant in tennessee. Just not problem. Don't concern myself with em.
Sure bad here in ARK.
❤❤❤❤
Your not concerned with the Queen falling off the frame when putting in on the outside of the box????
What is crisco
A brand of shortening
Ha u got some cure for moths. I bought some nuces from easteren shore and they are full of worms HELP
I use cedar chips instead of white pine chips in my blanket box above the inner cover. Just like the old cedar chest, moths can’t stand cedar smell. The SMBs don’t like it either. Cedar in--pests gone.
What's the brown bait in the traps?
Barnyard Bees thanks for the reply, was curious
@@TheSword355 can you PM me his answer as to what the brown stuff in the CD case was?
Face reveal???
So it's not fixed, its just maintained
Oh wow, it’s like there like bee bedbugs. Gross
Christine McDonald 🤣. True!
What the hell is chrisco?
Please put on gloves my dude next time :)
True Smoker those are honey bees
