Wait. . . really?! Huh. Well, there's something new you learn.
Fun fact: when Little Nemo was first released in Japan, it did very poorly at the box office due to some stiff competition from Kiki's Delivery Service, which was ironically directed by one of the animators who left the production of this film.
srbarkerchan Welp
Sarah Barker I watched Kiki’s Delivery Service as a kid and had the movie. It was okay but, I prefer Little Nemo. I preferred it back then and I also do now.

It looks like a Ghibli film

To be fair, some kids can be amazingly clueless at times.
P. Roud Tobi Mi shut up
Nice reply. What, got no dank memes to spare?
but kids arent THAT STUPID
Interesting how the princess, who spent her entire life being the heir apparent, was so accepting about being passed over in favor of a random kid.
Makes me wonder why that was even put in, seeing as to how Nemo was always JUST a playmate, and never future heir in the comics.
Judging by the king's stupidity and irresponsibility, she's probably thrilled someone else is dealing with the messes the king might or might not have made.
Maybe she wants to be a princess, not a queen.
@@MadTurnip dodging responsibility, every young girl's dream!
I kind of expected a Macbeth style revenge story out of her!
You know, the saddest part is imagining what this movie could have been if Studio Gibli produced it...imagine how awesome Hayao Miyazaki's version of a boy's dreams coming to life would have been...Holy crap, why didn't that happen?!! ;-;
+River Spirit ...Because Miyazaki gave up on the project? ....I think....
+River Spirit It's funny, because I kept thinking how this movie looked like it was trying really hard to be a Ghibli movie, but it just... Wasn't.

I am little, I have a foot.
Professor Genius, voiced by René Auberjonois. That's sad, considering he was Odo from DS9.
Also, Nemo is voiced by Littlefoot from The Land Before Time. That's fun.
Lazy bum couldn't even reach a doctorate? Not very genius, IMO...
This movie is creepily nostalgic for me and my brother. I remember that freaky chase the kid had with his bed and that train, and the part where everyone turns against Nemo was horrifying to me at such a young age.
But even with the scary parts of this movie, I still ended up liking it. I also hated how the whole movie was just a dream(I mean it is obvious, but as a 4 year old I was hoping he and the princess would get married have kids and live happily forever after)
You’ve got to get some etiquette if you want to be a prince!
It's so nostalgic for me too! For years I was searching for the name of the movie in vain, I used to watch it so much as a child but I misplaced it. The only parts I remembered were the train/bed scene, the spider bed looking scene, and the creepy boogie man lol. I loved this movie as a child and it still holds a place within my heart haha. Such simpler times!
11:50 OH NO, YOU RELEASED MOST OF THE ANIMATION BUDGET. NOW THE REST OF THE MOVIE IS GONNA LOOK PART GHIBLI AND PART STRANGE MAGIC.
If you remember, he sees the characters from the dream in the parade, so who knows!
Omg the TRAIN. It gave me an irrotational fear of a train driving through my room at night until I must’ve been around 9 or 10. All I could remember from the movie was there was a boy, a king, dreams, black goo, AND A TRAIN. Every few years I’d mention it with my sister (we watched it together at our daycare as toddlers) but she didn’t remember it yesterday so I went on a mission to find it lol.
I mean, it's a disjointed mess to be sure, but damn if it isn't beautiful animation.
Man, I'm getting old. I'm starting to get nostalgic for episodes of the nostalgia critic.

I've got mixed feelings about this review, seeing how Little Nemo was a part of my childhood.
I will say this, however: the placement of that Freddy Krueger clip was *genius.*
He made it out worse than it actually was. I agree that it has plot holes like how objects from the dream world end up IRL but at least it has a story and some pretty good visuals. It’s better than a Troll in Central Park 🥳
I never grew up with the movie tho
"Now I'm playing with power!"
6:08 That scene is even funnier when you realize he's talking to Nemo which is one letter away from Neo.

Kugawattan True. Even funnier cause the king's name is Morpheus.

Ah but see it's really an anagram for omg. Oh my Tom
I have to say that I actually really liked Little Nemo. I personally think that if they had no dialogue (or even have Nemo a silent protagonist) it'd be way way way better, but it was still really enjoyable. I've gotta disagree with the ending being stupid, though. Nemo learns to be more honest and considerate to the people around him, like most kids do. Whether it's with the pie or redeeming himself by defeating the evil king, Nemo grows and develops as a character rather well. Sure, he isn't as well written as Lilo, but he does seem at least a little bit realistic for a kid.

This animation definitly has _big-budget world-renowned Japanese animated film director_ written on it. I kind of like seeing how western and Japanese styles clash, though Miyazaki's style is definitly more Western than most anime artists.

I actually think the intro to this movie with the train scene is great! It kicks off the film with it's spectacular animation being shown to full effect, it draws the audience in with immediate suspense as well as whimsy, and as far as being a dream that's never mentioned again, well . . . . .all it really had to do was show how the whole premise of the movie centers around dreaming and that's exactly what it did.

@@chadsanders129 There were several directors and screenwriters credited, actually. I enjoy this movie, but there was no one person commanding the ship, which might be why it's such a strange combination of the visions of several different creative minds.

I saw this movie for the first time as an adult in college, and to be honest... I loved it. It may be totally predictable and stereotypical and the main character is a total Gary Stu, but that didn't really bother me, in fact I kind of like those plots, even though I know what's going to happen. I guess part of it is that this movie reminded me a lot about my childhood. When I was a kid, I was very much a naive and cheery child, and I had a problem with night terrors. The unbelievable stuff to me was so expected that I didn't mind it (like waking up from the dream and it's still a dream, nemo breaking his promise even though he has no reason to, ect.)and the cheesy stuff like the bad dancing, I honestly kind of enjoyed, especially when compared to the shaky cam action that you can barely see that suffices as filler these days.
Everybody has different things that they look for in a movie, and we can't really chose what we like. The point is being able to explain it and share the things that you think about movies.
Actually, I think the appropriate trope for Nemo would be a "Flat Character". It seems he never does anything in the movie to stand out.

"HUUT."
or
"WAAAAAAAAAH!"
or
"Excuuuuse me princess!"
+ThePotatoKing never forget "Well, Excuuuuuuuseee me princess.
And its interesting
Okay. It is time to put this to rest. Link talks a lot in Zelda. There are so many times where we see him making hand gestures and then someone says: "Oh! you say the princess has been kidnapped!" this implies that he says something, but they don't want to take freedom away from the character. If that doesn't satisfy you, there are so many times where they give you the option of saying something. This isn't just a yes or no, in the windwaker you can actually choose to tell someone you are "an ally of justice".
Please, please stop perpetuating this stupid belief. I find this less forgivable than people thinking Link's name is Zelda. That is understandable, the series is called Zelda, and Link is the main character. I don't forgive saying Link is a mute, because anyone that knows the series well enough to enforce this false belief has seen multiple instances of Link talking. Really, all it does is show that you are a moron that doesn't pay attention to the game's dialogue.
Hah! Aya! Huh?! Ack!

P.Z. Arnott That line was a reflection of the time the film took place. During that time, 1905 to be exact, it wasn't considered right for Boys to socialize with girls. It was generally thought that it would make boy too feminine later in life.
I gotta say, this movie really is a sad case. It looks amazing what with the animation and cast. It almost looks like Don Bluth and Studio Ghibli worked together to create the zaniest animation possible. Which is funny enough because Miyazaki had a hand in it, and Nemo is voiced by the same child actor who played Littlefoot in Land Before Time. The writing really is clunky and some of the characters are pretty bland. I almost want to like this movie but I still see all the issues with it so I'm really torn.
Yeah, that's the real tragedy about it, it had definitely effort put into it, and you can clearly tell they wanted to do something great but failed at it due to its troubled production history. This is the Heaven's Gate of animation.
It's some damn good animation.
Dylan Nix now can we do something with the story
It's really a shame when films have great animation but screwed up the story. We're Back - A Dinosaur Story is another tragic example of this.
I feel like the intro scene with the flying bed is there to show that because of the main villain, all dreams turn to nightmares. And they mention that a few times in the movie; that fact that people are having terrible nightmares.
This is actually one of my favorite animated movies. everyone uses the "it was a dream" argument to defend the problems with Wizard of Oz, so why not this?
I get the sense this movie might be better if watched in Japanese. If you can't understand the dialogue, you can just look at the visuals as an animation showcase and have your imagination fill in better writing.
+Tai Shadowman Aww. I was hoping that, like in the case of The Magic Roundabout/Doogal, some of the story problems might be fixed in a different dub. Nemo kind of felt like it may have been shipped over here and then the lines were written to fit the animation.
+Tai Shadowman I know TMS made most of the best episodes of Tiny Toons.
***** Damn! I didn't realize half of those!
+onlyelisha O RLY? Is the writing any different?
+AlexReynard That's not necessarily the case. There have been plenty of shows produced in Japan that were purely English. Prime examples are the early animated adaptations of Bible stories and SWAT Kats.

The animation in the movie is to die for. I love it.
I remember this movie being one of the reasons why I became an artist in the first place. The animation was so great and inspiring. While usually nine or 10-year-old kids would watch a movie just to be entertained, I watched it at that age thinking "wow, somebody drew that. Somebody made that picture come to life. I want to do that". As bad as this movie is, it still holds a special place in my heart.
So the film was contributed to by Hayao Miyazaki, George Lucas, Ray Bradbury, Chris Columbus, Gary Kurtz, Isao Takahata, Richard Outten, Ken Anderson, Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, and the Sherman Brothers...and it still somehow sucked.
Evilgidgit4Ever so the masterminds behind Spirited Away, Star Wars, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Whispers of the Heart and the musicians who made numerous Disney classics, couldn’t make a decent movie! Gods help me!
the reason it sucked isnt because nobody had any ideas on it. the problem was that too many people had ideas on what to do with it. look at every one of these films, and you will see they are astronomically different. they're all good, just very different. so when the movie was tossed between that many people, it got jumbled.

I recently read through the entire original Little Nemo comic strip, and I have to say that this movie actually does a decent job of replicating much of its imagery and ideas. In every strip (and I do mean every strip), Nemo wakes up from the dream that was that day’s story, which explains why Nemo wakes up in his bed so frequently in the movie. The car with goats as wheels comes straight from the comic. The scene where Flip pranks a bunch of cops is a replication of a joke from the comic. Even Nemo’s annoying cries are frequently found in the comic’s speech bubbles.
Now, does this make it a good film? Not necessarily, since film and comics are two different mediums and there are some faults in the movie resulting from trying to replicate the comic too much. It also has some faults that aren’t found in the comic, especially with its generic narrative that doesn’t live up to the comic’s dreamlike whimsy and experimentation. Still, I give this film a lot more slack than the Critic gives it, a decent film I can enjoy despite its obvious flaws.

Maybe because I'm as high as fuck, but how would Nemo be able to effectively run Slumberland if he's not there all the time? He's a young boy full of energy, being asleep wouldn't be on his to-do-list and since that's how you get to Slumberland Nemo wouldn't be there most of the time. Unless the current King also told Nemo they'll be putting him in a long term coma so he could be present 100% of the time as ruler.

On of my favorite movies from childhood and my first taste of cartoons with darker tones. Nemo almost gets ran over by a train, plumets to his death, drowned, blown up, enslaved, watch his friends get torn alive from monsters. The train shook me, but that door... it felt so evil and that black matter was terrifying to me.
His dream in the beginning of the movie is the best part of the entire thing. That whole nightmarish train scene scared the shit out of me and kinda still does.
Movie isn't perfect, and while most of NC's criticisms stand. I still can't help but liking the movie.
It's a fun movie to watch (Mostly for it's animation) I wish it had gone through a less turbulent production so that everyone could have enjoyed it.
There are some movies that Doug likes that are FAR from being perfect as well, for example; The Secret of NIMH. It's not a bad movie by any means, but it seems somewhat weak in characterization, and the magic elements of the story really don't make any sense considering it was a science experiment that make the Rats of NIMH intelligent.
I feel like a lot of the oddities came from the animators trying to pay a lot of different tributes.
The Surreal dancing looks like the type of animated dancing used in the very first cartoons which would have been out around the time of Nemo likewise the gimmick they beat to death of him continually waking up in his bedroom was based from the fact that every Nemo comic ended with him waking up usually falling out of the bed or something just as silly as what happens here.
I have some of the Nemo collections and I'm pretty sure I've seen a strip with the other on segments involving the police and the giant bird.
It may not have fit very well in an animated feature but it was all pulled from the source material and in fact as I watch this a lot of still scenes remind me of panels from the comic so what they probably did was pull out the most iconic and stand out stills from the comic and then handed it over to the animators and said string this all together

The Little Nemo NES game was one of my favorites. Especially for the music.
I do think Doug was being a little harsh with this one. :P
Matt Gamble At least it's better then Eight Crazy Nights, Foodfight & A Troll In Central Park.
Visually this look stunning. But story telling sucks ass
+@@asifmetal666 As well the editing and characters
thats the whole point of this channel. he likes to rip dumb movies apart because its entertaining
@@hayato3820 Ya know, when I first discovered the Nostalgia Critic, I always thought he was the personification of an Internet Troll? In other words: He talks negatively about good movies for attention?........ Oooonly to find out that's not the case.
here's a question for this movie that can't seem to decide; is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
Wouldn't you like to know. Caught in a landslide, no escape from reality
Open your eyes, look up to the sky and seeeeeeeeee.....
I'm just a poor boy. I need no sympathy.
cause it's easy come? easy go?
@@jayjayburns4820 would you let me go? Bismillah!
I still can't watch this film without anticipatory terror- certain scenes scared me that much as a child. When I get to them, am I scared? No, but just remembering how terrified they made me as a kid is enough to make me uncomfortable until the scenes are done with.
You know I am surprised no one pointed out that Morpheus in this movie is based off of the Greek god of dreams of the same name
Nothing says childhood like Little Nemo. I never knew the name of the movie. Thanks for helping me remember.
"I cant open this door!, lets open it, ya alright you convinced me"
This is what "Inception" was based on.
I watched this as a kid. And the animation is what I remembered, it literally took 15 years for me to figure out the name. I think that says a lot for this movie.
It took you 15 years for finding Nemo.
(There, I did it, I made a Finding Nemo reference, haha.)
@1:52 can we talk about how the animator _legends Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston_ were attached to this? 😮
Those aren’t the only Disney veterans who worked on the film. The Sherman Brothers, Bob and Richard, wrote the songs to the movie. As you can see at 1:55
I used to LOVE this movie when I was a little kid. It is kind of insane and weird, but I loved it. I watched it all the time, to the point that I drove my parents crazy. I’ve watched it once as an adult and it is even more insane than I remembered it.
That little squirrel thing is awesome, just leave out all the undeveloped human characters and have a story about him XD
I agree!
Eh, I still enjoyed the movie.
"King Morpheus"
Little Nemo confirmed as part of the Sandman universe
19:53 "your courage destroyed nightmare king and his reign of terror all of his kingdom and evil is now forever gone"
Dude let's be real isn't he"THE nightmare" like the whole concept of nightmares the embodiment of that like did Nemo kill the concept of nightmares like nightmare king can not be killed unless the concept of nightmares is permanently destroyed you don't know that I don't know that WE All Don't know that
Edit: shouldn't nightmare king be the eldritch horror that is a concept of bad dreams?
I literally believed this movie was based on a Nintendo game. I had no clue who Windsor McCay was or that he's pretty much the Father of Animation.
I remembered the game......
Why does the King pick Nemo to be his heir? He already has a freaking daughter! What a sexist king!
Well, he does need to find a male heir in order to continue the bloodline.
Holland Kerr Well it's not like she can reproduce asexually.
Holland Kerr They didn't have last names back then. Really, the whole reason Nemo's there is to marry the princess. I mean, how else is he going to be the heir?
Holland Kerr I know he does. What I'm saying is that the king also needs a male heir, which is where Nemo comes in.
Holland Kerr Alright, it makes no sense then.
Lol, I actually had a really vivid remembrance of this movie and comic strip despite it being out before I was born. Though it came on one time I think really early on in my life and because I loved animation my grandma recorded it on VHS. I watched it almost religiously.... No clue why. That big ass door everyone kept warning him about had me SHOOK, as did the demon dude or whatever he was.
12:57 MEME ME! MEME ME! M-M-M-M-MEME ME!
Luigicat11 Exactly what I was thinking!
Luigicat11 it was missing WA-HA WA-HA WA-HA
I like how you can tell it’s looped and he’s not actually doing that super fast for 3,5 seconds
12:54 So THAT'S where the IT remake got the inspiration for Pennywise's dance.
