Pan is a 2015 American fantasy film directed by Joe Wright and written by Jason Fuchs. The film serves as a prequel to Peter and Wendy from Scottish author J. M. Barrie, which was first staged in 1904, and focuses on an alternative origin story for Peter Pan and Captain Hook. It stars Hugh Jackman as a fictionalized version of Blackbeard, Garrett Hedlund as Hook, Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily, and Levi Miller as Peter Pan.

Since Disney is giving their villains origin movies I’ve got an interesting one for Hook. In the books Peter would actually kill the Lost Boys when started to get too old. Wendy would ask him and say “they became pirates”. Hook starts out as a Lost Boy until he starts to see that there’s something wrong with Peter. After questioning is authority, Peter tries to kill him but escapes. He fully dawns on the pirate persona with other former lost boys to combat Peter. It reveals that Peter kills the Lost Boys so he can stay young. An offering to a magical crocodile, aka: Tick Tock the Croc. And Hook tries to extend a hand to Peter hoping the could be friends but Peter pull Vader and chops it off. Offering it to Croc.

"I remember looking at you, the littlest babe. Helpless and all mine. Those big, big eyes, just full of tears... pulling at me. Pulling away my name, my money, my time. “With moments of the extraordinary dropped in”
Probably the best way to describe it. A lot of the changes they made just don’t work very well, Tiger Lily being a major example. However, I think the visuals are some of the best in any Peter Pan project. Even the mining scenes which look bland or dull are still suitably epic in scale considering it’s literally showing child slavery. I also liked Jackman’s performance of Blackbeard and I especially like they didn’t make him exactly like Hook (in comparison…Hook should’ve been more like Hook with at least an anger issue or a dark streak to imply villainous things in his future). Blackbeard comes off as completely unstable, a man who can switch between emotions at the drop of the hat for almost no apparent reason. And I think that’s what the performance is meant to convey.
But beyond those two things they really screwed themselves with this film. As it is people aren’t really fans of Chosen One stories anymore, but it’s so strange that they decided a Peter Pan story needed one when the entire story is already right in front of them. They could’ve even looked at any of the other spin-offs and taken ideas. The review mentions how the Robin Williams film had the Lost Boys come from different time periods and then gave them different period outfits to subtly show that. Great idea, makes perfect sense for the narrative, add more ideas like that and less like Peter being some special fairy boy. I didn’t even mind the orphanage being in league with the pirates, they just never explained why lol.

Most people choose to insist that one doesn't exist though so..lol Peter Pan has clearly had its influence on more modern, popular media.

I think a few good ideas for the movie would've been to, obviously, have hook actually be British, and maybe to have had him be the captain of a ship on earth, and he was commanding a fleet of ships during a war. But then the ships are destroyed, and hook is the only one that survives, and the pirates just so happened to have flown by the aftermath and saw hook floating on some wood in the water. They pick him up and take them back with him, it gives him a somewhat interesting bakcstory, and a possibly better character than whatever Tremos knockoff character he was depicted as in the movie. I also think it would've been a good idea if the prophecy was revealed to be a lie, and the whole thing was a long elaborate trick to get Pan to lead Blackbeard to the fairyland. And when it's revealed to Peter that it was all a lie, but he learns that it doesn't matter that it was a lie, because he believed that he could save all of Neverland, and it was belief that got him this far, which is when he believes in himself enough to start flying. Maybe some of that sounds dumb, I'm just trying to help make a dumpster fire a little bit more of a tire fire, it's still not great, but atleast a burning tire smells slightly better than burning garbage

It's funny that you mentioned "Jupiter Ascending", because the first thing I thought of when I saw Tiger Lily's "headdress" was Doona Bae's character in that movie.

Honestly, a part of me really wished that when Blackbeard got into the Fairy Kingdom, that he and his crew would have been instantly killed by a sort of guardian. I’ve always hated how the villains just appear behind the main characters right when everything they’ve been fighting for is in their grasp, just to steal it for themselves.
That would have been so super hilarious! And if they did Hook right as a greedy, temperamental, cunning, two-faced opportunist with a violent, even bloodthirsty, streak, it would have been an excellent way for him to become the true villain of the movie in the end, with even the survivors of Blackbeard’s crew becoming his own new one. And perhaps have his hand be eaten by the Croc for good measure to cement his new hatred for Peter.

Looks like a movie for the High School Musical crowd. I think the 70s were the last time musicals didn't suck. Now they're just cheesy fluff that make Elvis musicals look like Oscar winners.

I remember when this movie came out there was this store that had an advertising display for it. My dad and I happened to be there the night they were getting rid of the display and they asked us if we wanted any of it. I liked the cardboard box with the title on it so we took that. We found my mom in another store in the mall and she made us go back for the cardboard cutout of Hugh Jackman. Cardboard Jackman got bent up or something but I think we still have the title box somewhere.

In FABLES, Peter Pan was originally supposed to be The Adversary, but he wasn’t in the public domain, so they had to pivot to Geppetto instead. And since OUAT did BEGIN as an adaptation of that, it makes sense they put it back in.

Oh boy! I remember going to see this for my 21st birthday back in 2015. Around that time I felt really really inadequate and stuck on wherever I was stuck (In that case, college) and since it was still pre-holiday season October (Force Awakens was back then still two months away) I was trying to make myself enjoy and make the most out of a shallow and fractured film. I remember being so obsessed to the point I did a 3D model of this version of Hook in the style of Final Fantasy VII's super deformed (map) models.
I would like to compare to another movie Doug has reviewed: Babes In Toyland (the 1986 Barrymore-Reeves-Morita version). It has that "deconstruct the story" feel and I even imagined a remake of that version (Daisy Ridley as Mary Contrary, Kit Harington as Jack Be Nimble, Richard Roxburgh as Barnaby Barnacle, Josh Gad as Georgy Porgy and so forth...) being part of shared universe with Pan (What if the course of the ship at the end of the movie leads to Toyland instead of back to Neverland?).

Funny enogh i enjoyed watching this movie when it came out. Yeah i agree a bit to the point of peters personality falling a little flat with the "chosen one" concept and being confusing with good boy vs the playfull one we know.
But the one aspect i really liked about this take was blackbeard and hook. As some others have mentiont blackbeard is suppose to be all over the place with his personality and therefor be unpredictable.
Hook on the other hand we get to know before the so called bad blood situation between pan and hook, and here you can kind of call him portraied as a lost boy himself.
What i love about this setup is you dont need hook to have a little evil streck to indicate what he becomes later, because blackbeard is that evil streck for him. Blackbeard is an indicater for what hook ends up to be, so in a way blackbeard is a omen, a forshadowing to hooks future.

You do get that this movie is meant to be a prequel to the 1911 book right? Its not meant to have anything to do with the Disney movie, which itself took alot of liberties and changed things. Like the 2nd star to the right and straight on til morning is not a line from the original book.
While this isn't a very good movie, people really need to get the notion out of their head that Peter Pan didn't exist until Disney stole it and Disneyized it.
