When the princess tells Felix that he has a heart of gold, I feel it would have made sense to cut back to the clip of Felix callously mocking the corpse at 8:55.
bit of a tragic backstory here this movie was actually made by don Oriolo who's father Joe Oriolo had bought the rights to Felix the cat in 1959 and made the Felix the cat tv series that same year. the tv series was where characters like the professor and poindexter came from as well as Felix's magic bag and the cylinder robots. Don Oriolo intended this movie to be a huge tribute to his father's work but had to outsource it to an animation studio in eastern Europe and it ended up getting constantly delayed. in fact, this movie started production in 1985 and was only supposed to be a tv special at first. there are hints of the original idea sprinkled all over including the name of the land of Oriana being a reference to the name Oriolo. and that makes this whole thing much sadder
Yeah, that's the sad thing about it - you can clearly tell there was effort put into it and they wanted to make a good film. And it might have worked if executed right, but sadly, it all turned out to be garbage. The story tries way too hard be a weird sci-fi fantasy tale but is too scary for kids and too boring for adults, the attempts at humor are awful, the weird, surreal cyberpunk aesthetics are poor ripoffs of other films of the era that used this style much better (Pink Floyd's The Wall is already mentioned in the review), and the animation looks very cheap and doesn't exceed Saturday morning cartoon level.
Also originally too, this movie was actually supposed to be a pilot, and we were gonna get a TV series of it after, originally it was supposed to happen instead of the final “Twisted Tales” series Don went with in the end…
imthinkinwacky The film was theatrically released in Europe in 1988, then re-released to VHS in the US in 1991. So the film couldn't compete with Beauty and the Beast in anyway.
1:32 "And hundreds of screaming kids go running out of the theatre." That would require hundreds of kids to have been in the theatre to begin with. Fun fact: this movie had a higher budget than An American Tail.
Really? Wow. An American Tail came out 2 years before this shitty film did, in 1986. It was one of my favorite animated films as a kid and the animation for that looks so much better! I have never heard of Felix the Cat or this terrible movie until I discovered the NC review. This definitely proves that a big budget doesn't mean your movie will be better.
My theory is that the studio lied about their expenses to get more from Oriolo and then pocketed the extra cash for themselves. It wouldn't be the first time an animation studio took advantage of an inexperienced patron, and it's the best explanation I can figure (aside from sheer incompetence on the part of the animators) to explain why a feature with decent funding would look worse than a Saturday morning cartoon.
Wait wait, hol up wait minute, has nostalgia critic never watched the original cartoon? He questions Felix's bag of tricks like he doesn't know that its been established in the cartoon. No, don't get me wrong, the movie's portrayal of it is more like a power rangers' transformation and less like it should be.
The VHS copy of this movie that I own is actually a preview copy that is not supposed to be owned. It was an early version sent out to possible investors and buyers. The background music is actually much quieter and most of the stuff in your mix is nonexistent in that one. Very strange... I never knew they changed the background score so horrendously.
I have a VHS copy of it also and I don't remember the music and sound effects drowning out the voices either... Never knew I had a preview copy, as I brought it at a charity store.

Sure you haven't seen Felix the cat before. Firstly Felix the cat wasn't an "Innocent animation" at all, it had Felix drinking beer, and Felix committing suicide. The magic bag was something that Felix had in the 1950's cartoons. the two scientist are "the professor" and "poindexter" they also appear in the 1950's cartoons and the "Master cylinder" of the end was a recurrent villain in the 1950's cartoons.
I think if they were to do a modern reboot of Felix the cat, they should stick the twisted tales tone and feel of Felix, had a more dark slapstick style To it with more of a adult sense of humor and witty writing. Felix doesn’t need to be marketed as a Mickey Mouse type of character. I think the twisted tales style would suit him best nowadays. Gives him a distinct vibe.

When U realize the cat is 98 years old and has been around exactly 9yrs and 9 days before Mickey Mouse. Felix:November 9th 1919 Mickey: November 18th 1928 Illuminati confirmed!!!!
You know what the animation in this movie reminds me of? It reminds me of the Zelda CD-I games. This looks like one long Philip's CD-I cutscene! It's horrible!
"How does this guy form consonants?" It is at this point, fifteen years into my life, that I realise that the difference between vowels and consonants is that one is open-mouthed and one isn't
Funny that you say that since both Felix and Link go on a quest to save a princess, are hideously animated, have obnoxious voices, and defeat their villains by throwing a book at them. Also, why did Felix the Cat: The Movie decide to ripoff the Spider-Man villain Mysterio?
Saddest part is that this movie was made by an respected hungarian animation company. But when it was released in Hungary, none of the locals wanted anything to do it. I respect Hungary for that.
I saw a Hungarian animated film with subtitles about a famous Hungarian opera, Hary János, which was made in the early 80s. It takes place during the Napoleonic Wars of the 1800s, and the film was influenced by folk art (e.g. the characters had red and pink "circles" on their faces to indicate cheeks). However, it wasn't quite a kids' film, as it had female nudity. It was not only animated better than this claptrap, but being based on an opera, the music is incomparable.
9:09...Question for you...Logan Paul worked for Disney...yes or no? If yes, then the sellout has no clue or storyline concept of who the hell was Felix The Cat was since he was unborn to begin with. If no, then the @#$hole would never know who the hell Felix The Cat was since HE WAS UNBORN TO BEGIN WITH. But hey, he could save his entertainer career by being the voice for Felix The Cat (smirk). I have totally forgotten about his trip to Japan(**shakes head left to right**)
+Assailant To be fair, Equestria runs with a Diarchy system, and the exact set-up of political power never really is explained. Also, something about 'Queen' characters not being marketable to children or something.
Honestly, I like the sound of 'Queen Celestia' better. Because what better way to communicate that you have years of experience under your belt then to showcase that you have the highest ranking possible!? Elsa is a queen? I take back what I said about experience then. The more you know...I guess?
There are two NC F-ups in this movie. One: if the ruler of the land is a princess, it doesn't mean she should be queen, it means that she rules a principality, like Monaco or Liechtenstein. Secondly, the magic bag did not originate with this movie, it originated with the Felix the Cat animated series from the sixties.
Laughed so hard during this video! xD I love this movie, always felt surreal for me and I always appreciated how Felix was pulled into Oriana from his cartoon series' dimension. I like pre magic bag Felix equally, but this Felix had a kind of sonic the hedghog/doctor who feel for me :) Great video as usual! Now I need to try and find this movie on bluray :O
This is my all-time favorite NC review. The level of rage and fear he has is impressive. I don't even think Garbage Pail Kids broke him this quickly. Or The Room. Or Freddy Got Fingered.
@@Krosis_The_Dragon_Priest Okay, fine, but I'm just not sure why you felt the need to actually type it out. You don't have to say EVERYTHING that pops into your head, you were just being rude for no reason.
How does Princess Oriana's tear have the power to float, interact with objects/people and have a will and voice of its own? How does Felix have a "Magic Bag" that can seemingly turn into anything he needs? THIS MUST BE THE WORK OF AN ENEMY STAND!
I also want to know about Oriana's tear thing, like, they never mentioned if she's magical or stuff, Or *how* she can make it. And the whole "Magic bag" started with the Felix the Cat 50's show, but i don't remember if they did something of how he got that bag.
@@arte0021 oh shut up, you're clearly nothing but a Logan Paul fanboy who can't stand to see your shitty idol get any criticism. it's INSANE how people can actually defend someone who recorded himself LAUGHING AT A SUICIDE VICTIM.
AT Productions there’s this guy named Joel who’s part of a UA-cam channel named Vinesauce. He played a Felix the Cat bootleg game with a game over screen with music suspiciously similar to Planet Robobots Puzzle Room music, and if you chose to not continue at the game over screen, gory imagery. Later on, someone on the SiIvagunner team uploaded a high quality rip of Puzzle Room without permission. Partway through the rip, Russian words for yes and no (no being нет in Russian, hence the HET comments) appeared on the screen. Clicking Yes lead to a song about a Mexican going to Russia, while clicking no lead to an image of a harlequin baby. If you waited, a hand would click no and an image of the baby with the Hypernova Yourself filter from the Triple Deluxe website would appear. This rip was soon removed, and has become infamous among the SiIvagunner community The song Puzzle Room has been used in a lot of rips since.
@@Volcanic_Rave Man, it's so sad, how one person can ruin a franchise's reputation. Felix the Cat was well-respected for all those years... P.S. If you want to know what the origin of that game over screen, look up "Felix the Cat Unmasked". You wouldn't do it anyway because it would scare the living daylights out of you. P.P.S. That bootleg has balanced difficulty, but Joel forgot about it. Now there are many people associating this franchise with a bootleg.
This movie was my favourite childhood movie for a looong time. I watched it almost everyday after school. It was an awesome movie imo. Now, though, I'm never going to get that wrench part out of my head.
Nobody ever comments on the part where the evil Green Guy introduces Felix at the circus and says "a genuine talking cat, believed to be the only one of its kind" despite there being an entire cat band CALLED the Cat Band who talk like a minute later. So weird.
This movie just goes to show that while Don Oriolo wasn't the best storyteller in the context of Felix (especially since he was trying hard to follow in his dad's footsteps since Joe Oriolo made the 1950s tv show), he seems better at original universes and characters. Hell, painting and music composition seems to be more his strong suits since he made the music for this movie and I loved that part of the movie. Fun fact, he wanted The Twisted Tales of Felix to be more like the 50s show his dad worked on while the others who worked on that show wanted it to be weirder like the 1920s cartoons and that was why the show eventually got cancelled. Plus budget was a big issue for the movie and that's why it was rushed to hell and back and ended up with pacing as awkward as it is. I feel like if this movie wasn't focused on Felix, there would've been an interesting story gotten out of it because I like the universe of Oriana and Zill. Actually... I think the universe of Oriana would make for a better video game. Imagine an rpg set in that universe.
To add insult to injury, Pointdexter (the scientist in the glasses) was originally Felix's friend and helped to stop his uncle (the other scientist) from getting the Magic Bag. I watched the original toons as a boy.
@Tanner Hutchings Well, "hate" is a strong word--and there's a lot of conflicting information on the subject, as far as I can tell. But he was apparently uncomfortable around most children.
you know, i was really hoping for a "the faces of evil" reference when felix threw the book at the robot at the end there. "not into the pit, it burns!!"
Characters Actions No Substance Chemistry Ending Reading the Script Yep and that's everything wrong with the movie! Read the first letter of each part to learn what the movie really is!
Its not all that bad its not that good but its not as bad as you are making it out to be seriously though i can understand it from the critic the whole point of him and the nerd is their reactions are pushed to the absolute extreme

I can feel the creators of Felix twisting in their graves because of this movie.
I think they'd just be confused at how the movie's in color. And full length.
@Double-R-Nothing yeah especially pat sullivan the man who created felix
When U realize the cat is 98 years old and has been around exactly 9yrs and 9 days before Mickey Mouse.
Felix:November 9th 1919
Mickey: November 18th 1928

Anyone notice Felix the Cat's voice sounds like Mickey Mouse's voice?

You know what the animation in this movie reminds me of? It reminds me of the Zelda CD-I games. This looks like one long Philip's CD-I cutscene! It's horrible!
It's like Zelda CD-I meets Sonic The Hedgehog (2006) and (duh) Felix the Cat. NIGHTMARISH.
the colors and the animation altogether are a big eyesore...LITERALLY!
I actually thought about that while I was watching it. :/
Like do these animators know that blending neon colors makes everything look like puke colors?

Maybe they're color blind.
Actually no, just blind period.

Same... That's actually sad. I tried it out when he said it and almost smacked my face against the desk when I realised
This whole movie feels like a Legend of Zelda CDI game
But with more budget.
Funny that you say that since both Felix and Link go on a quest to save a princess, are hideously animated, have obnoxious voices, and defeat their villains by throwing a book at them.
Also, why did Felix the Cat: The Movie decide to ripoff the Spider-Man villain Mysterio?
But at least the CDI games were funny bad!
Defeat the final boss of Felix the Cat by throwing a book. Kinda like how you defeat Ganon by throwing a book at them.

I legitimately forgot that you were reviewing a Felix the Cat movie.
It's ok ... There's fucken bubbles
Oh hai, Mark.
FUCKING BUBBLES!!!
8:53 I didn't know Logan Paul was in this movie
miragegem “Boy you could use a *BIG MAC* HaHaHaHaHa”
fun fact: this was actually logan pauls favorite childhood film
9:09...Question for you...Logan Paul worked for Disney...yes or no? If yes, then the sellout has no clue or storyline concept of who the hell was Felix The Cat was since he was unborn to begin with. If no, then the @#$hole would never know who the hell Felix The Cat was since HE WAS UNBORN TO BEGIN WITH. But hey, he could save his entertainer career by being the voice for Felix The Cat (smirk). I have totally forgotten about his trip to Japan(**shakes head left to right**)
Also both Felix and Logan wore hat thingys while laughing at dead people. O_O DID LOGAN PAUL WATCH DID THIS FILM?
Jaden N. Hernandez is that true
The only good thing about this movie is how cute Felix looks, and nothing else.
I still think there are awesome parts in the soundtrack of this movie. Especially "Who is the Boss" and "Face to the Wind".
This makes me feel so much better about being absolutely confused watching this as a kid in the early 90s
"If you're the leader of the nation, you're a queen!"

To be fair, Equestria runs with a Diarchy system, and the exact set-up of political power never really is explained.
Also, something about 'Queen' characters not being marketable to children or something.
Falling Pictures Productions I know. Sunbutt was originally going to be a queen
+Falling Pictures Productions I don't know Queen Elsa seems to be pretty popular among children.
Honestly, I like the sound of 'Queen Celestia' better. Because what better way to communicate that you have years of experience under your belt then to showcase that you have the highest ranking possible!?
Elsa is a queen?
I take back what I said about experience then.
The more you know...I guess?

I want a full version of the Random Zone song.

I second that
Well there sort of is - it's a parody of Kenny Loggins' song Danger Zone.

AT Productions he's referencing a harlequin baby
Stoney Breeches yes it does, because this is a Felix the Cat movie. Felix The Cat is now heavily associated with that incident.
@@Volcanic_Rave Man, it's so sad, how one person can ruin a franchise's reputation.

PFFF SORRY I KNOW THIS WAS 5 YEARS AGO BUT THIS MADE MY DAY
This movie just goes to show that while Don Oriolo wasn't the best storyteller in the context of Felix (especially since he was trying hard to follow in his dad's footsteps since Joe Oriolo made the 1950s tv show), he seems better at original universes and characters.
