I've seen another video of someone catching Barbel and a Trout off Wandle Bank a bit further up stream next to Merton bus garage in Colliers Wood, which is about 100 yards south of the underground station next to Wandle park.
A well deserved fish from unpromising surroundings (when you said "pikey sites", I thought at first that you meant the fish, as opposed to the travelling conmunity!). It is very far removed from the rural Yorkshire rivers that I love, but it is wonderful to know that barbel and carp are thriving even in the big city.
We have major barbel in Budapest, but they don't live in small canals, that is bream and pike habitat, I catch them in the deepest part of a Major river, in the current.
A very well deserved Beastie,getting it out of that snaggy swim must of been heart stopping and braving the Pikey camps and their sometimes hostile dogs deserves a medal alone.

Hi, thanks for your reply, yeah i heard eels were a minority on the Thames, may try for both eels and flattys, what bail would u recommend for flatties, lure worm/ spinner?

Bakerfield Christophee I visited buderpest 2 years ago and the river in the city centre looked immense.

John Loyd generally it's fishable as the tide is low or on the way up. Eels and flat fish are the main species but you never know.

John Loyd there's loads of eels in the Thames you just can't take them. Lob worm, bits of oily fish or chicken for baits.

Yeah it's the Wandle, he started off up by the travelling site on Summerley Street & walked down to near Plough Lane when he caught the Barbel.
