      @@LindsayB1997 I used to feel exactly the same way, and then I started to practice martial arts. Everything changed. I wanted to be fit to get better at my sport! I introduced yoga and muscle training to my routine in order to achieve my martial goals. I haven't been able to practice martial arts since this pandemic started and I have been feeling the self-hatred creeping back in. It has helped me realize how far I have come and how fragile our mental equilibrium is. I hope you find a sport you truly love!! It changed my life and I can't wait to be able to practice it again, for it to make my life better once more.

    i'm recovered from anorexia and my (ed specialized) therapist told me that if i can't stop thinking about a food, i'm probably hungry or my body otherwise needs it. at that time, i didn't feel hunger cues. eating things because they sounded good and because my body wanted them saved my life. i could've died from doing some of the things in this video, and i think that's not talked about enough. i hope abbey's channel helps other people who are in a similar position that i was, because abbey's channel helps me learn more about the scientific perspective of intuitive eating and i love that!

    One thing I as a historian have learned is that most people through most of history didn’t do nearly the kind of exercise that is recommended today. Instead people moved and moved a lot throughout the day. For example most women did a great deal of manual labor just cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry. I like the idea of making small changes to your day that make you move more, and looking to the past is a great way to do that! Knead bread by hand, hang your clothes to dry, stand to do ironing, walk everywhere you can, garden, dig, build, sew!

      Agree!! When school is in session (and here in Texas we're back to in-person learning), I move all. the. time. I walk my daughter to school, and walk her home from school (and keep in mind for me, I'm walking to school, back home, then back to school in the afternoon and then back home with her). It's about 2/3 of a mile altogether. Then during the day, I'm cleaning the house, vacuuming, getting in a quick strength workout, I walk the dog, I try to park far away at grocery stores, etc. It all adds up! Also, painting a room in your house works your muscles in ways I never would have imagined because of how you're standing on a ladder, balancing, squatting, etc. I don't suggest painting a room just for the workout component, but I'm in the middle of painting a couple of rooms in my house right now and it's amazing how much of a burn I feel afterwards.

But they got very jittery and sick after only a few weeks and had to tap out. Turns out herbalife contains absolutely insane amounts of caffeïne!! I'm just 'lucky' that my body hardly responds to caffeïne. Kicked that shit to the curb and just started eating better, and THEN the pounds started to drop.

    People really just can’t grasp that losing weight is a side effect of living a better life. Small steps to create habits is the best way. I personally for 6 months just worked on having better portions. I stopped stuffing myself to the point of feeling sick. After six months of that becoming a habit. I said “ok, now I’ll add some healthier meals”. Just dinner. All that needed to be a solid well rounded meal was dinner.
    Then after a month breakfast was healthier along with dinner.
    Then after a month I stopped having snacks after dinner.
    Then I cut out soda.
    Just slowly build upon your habits over time and you’ll have long lasting results and you won’t feel like you’re giving everything up.
    Just changing my portions (still eating pretty poorly) I lost 30 lbs over those 6 months.
    If you fail, you aren’t a lost cause. Just pick back up the next day. It’s a process.

    • @kelsynicole9135
      @kelsynicole9135 3 роки тому +3

      I’ve been using a similar process! I started with cutting out soda and reducing my sweets, and am trying to actually eat breakfast. That plus drinking lots of water. It’s a slow process, but it is so worth it to make sustainable lifestyle changes instead of changing everything all at once and nothing sticks.

      Absolutely!! I started by checking if I can replace my sweetened drinks and make my favourite drinks less caloric, but concentrated only on that for a WHILE until I decided I'm ready for the next step and then the next step and so on. Was a long process of readjusting the very very small stuff that ended eventually adding up. And yes best advice is to just keep going, there shouldn't be quick fix and no "suffer for the goal" because your goal is to keep majority of the changes forever.. 😃

    About the exercise thing, I used to run before quarantine and I genuinely liked it. I was in fourth grade when I started wanting to lose weight, so that's why I ran, but everyone told me I was skinny, so I stopped trying to lose weight, but continued running bc I liked it. A few years later and I am in quarantine, actually needing to lose a few pounds and as a growing 13 year old, I can't be eating nothing. Luckily my bad eating habits didn't last for long, but I still hated running bc now, I viewed it as a mean of losing weight, not for fun. I decided that I wanted to join cross country and improve my endurance in high school. I started running as a hobby and not as a punishment, and once I started telling myself that I liked running (which I realized I actually did), I now love waking up and running bc it is fun now, and I know it is keeping me healthy, and will support my health and weight in the long term.

Besides being tired pretty frequently, he’ll often only eat one big meal a day before he starts work, probably because his body just isn’t used to eating a lunch at 4 am when he’s halfway through a shift. So I’m definitely interested when this video comes out! 😊

    I don't believe the "hunger and thirst feels different" thing. I personally find myself wanting sugary things when I'm thirsty and when I drink some water, it goes away. I think it works differently for different people since I've never been able to feel when I'm thirsty and tend to drink too little. I don't recognize thirst ques.

      Hi! old comment, but I had the same issue you have before I started another wrong weight loss, then well needed reversed diet... I'm not yet out of the reverse diet, but I eat a far more balanced diet now. And that brought back to me true thirst instead of sugar cravings. Maybe you have a slight diet inbalance too (maybe you don't. It's just a small idea since this whole journey is kind of changing a lot of things I thought I knew about myself. But in fact those were just things which slowly happened along my bad diet habits ^^)

      @alien-iw1zj 4 роки тому +5

      yes, Abbey, please do a video on protein powders because I’ve always wondered if it’s better to just eat more meat & eggs or add powder. In other words, are all protein sources equal?

    • @aab24209
      @aab24209 4 роки тому +6

      @@alien-iw1zj just FYI, collagen protein is not a source of complete protein either :) some brands like PE Science and Legion Athletics combine diff sources of veg protein (ex pea and brown rice) to make complete proteins for their vegan proteins. Studies show neither vegan protein powders or egg white protein powders with equal amino acid profiles stimulate muscle protein synthesis to the degree that whey does. It's speculated that's due to other properties of whey aside from the amino acid profile (perhaps insulin response and/or igf1 but unsure/don't quote me on that lol).
      Protein powder is really not necessary and more of a convenience option or good if you struggle to get in enough protein in your diet due to low appetite, etc.
      I'm violently lactose intolerant and don't respond well to soy so I have been using the KOS protein powder off of Amazon lately. It's pretty good but pricey.
      You can just eat real food and meet your protein needs typically, even if your goal is muscle gain. There's really no need for powdered food at all for most people. I like that pea protein has lots of iron but I understand concerns about heavy metals in them. I certainly wouldn't rely on powders for nutrition of any kind personally.

    • @alien-iw1zj
      @alien-iw1zj 4 роки тому

      Alicia Witt wow, I did not know all that. I guess that’s why it would be great if Abbey did a video on protein sources. I’ve been using the Vital Proteins collagen from Costco. I mostly have been supplementing with it to heal from a 2-yr vegan diet (I would only get ~30-40g protein a day, not good for muscle and hair growth)-it might be anecdotal, but I’ve seen improvements in my skin from the collagen. But, thank you for informing me that it’s not the same as, for example, eating eggs. There really is a lot of misinformation and new (hopefully correct) information out there about protein. I feel like I learn and unlearn something everyday!

    One thing I do want to mention specifically for people with ADHD or autism is that I’ve found that when I need an oral stim I sometimes feel either really hungry or really thirsty even if I’ve just eaten/drank. For some of us we need oral stimulation from a chew toy, gum, etc. and sometimes the feeling of hunger or thirst is how our bodies tell us this, particularly since some of us don’t have the same abilities to read our bodies cues, for example when I was a kid hunger and nausea felt the same. I’m sure this doesn’t apply to everyone but I’ve definitely found it true for me!

    • @isakwondo3293
      @isakwondo3293 4 роки тому +9

      Omg, I can't agree enough with that. Even as an adult with ADHD, I still have a tough time differentiating hunger and nausea, even though I've been dealing with that since childhood!
      I tend to dislike gums, but I do suck on hard candies (natural ones, they also help with my throat these days) to ease off the need for oral stimulation (when I know I'm actually not hungry or thirsty).
      I'm glad I'm not the only one out there.

      Isak Wondo that’s awesome! I recently started using chewlery and it’s really changed my life, I’m just so so much calmer. Especially if I let myself get too hungry I still can’t differentiate hunger and nausea, and I often won’t get the early signs of hunger at all. When I was little this was particularly difficult because it meant that during periods where I was extra anxious/having sensory overload I often wasn’t able to eat enough. A lot of kids with autism in particular (and particularly girls) struggle with food because of textures, sensory overload, and lack of hunger/fullness cues or mixing up those cues, or needing to have ridged eating patterns. I for example have never been able to eat fruit! The texture, smell, etc. makes me feel sick and go into sensory overload. I hate even watching other people/smelling fruit. Luckily I eat my veggies.

    • @TheQueerTailor
      @TheQueerTailor 4 роки тому +2

      Psychwriteify yes! Your mouth literally does get bored! People with autism and/or ADHD have different sensory needs than neurotypicals. We need to stim and that can look like chewing on things, bouncing, shaking, hand flapping or flicking, pinching or picking, playing with hair, vocal stimming. There are great tools for oral stims as well, such as chewy necklaces, vibrating tooth brushes, hand held chews etc. We have to treat sensory needs as real needs just like eating or drinking!

    I’m so confused about the exercise part.. although we will say ‘adapt to a 10 minute run over time’ and start to burn less calories, that 10 minute run is still more than if we weren’t to do it. And surely over time we get stronger and fitter so can run faster than before therefore we don’t really adapt to it? Also tdee is literally made up by the amount of exercise you do and people with high metabolisms are often very active right?

    • @jaykingplays
      @jaykingplays 4 роки тому +6

      She explained it in the video, but to summarize for shorter exercises what ends up happening that you get tired to the point of not fidgeting as much. People naturally fidget and move around during the day (some more than others, I have ADHD so I fidget more, but many of my doctors recommend to help me keep my focus I exercise so I fidget less outside of medication and diet) so unless it's an hour+ your body will just adjust to not fidgeting as much. Along with other things she mentioned such as people having a tendency to "reward" themselves for exercising because the exercise is a "punishment".
      Yes, it's great to get 10 minutes, especially if you're for the most part sedentary, but if you're doing it for weight loss as she mentioned, even if you go a full hour for the 10-30% calorie burn off, it's not so much the you burn what you eat mantra.
      Your body is annoyingly smart sometimes and knows how to adjust for things even if those adjustments are "detrimental" to your health.
      EDIT: I felt detrimental is a bit strong, but more along the lines of you get disappointed in the results you were hoping to achieve due to your body adjusting to it.

      I think she's just emphasizing that working out shouldn't be linked to weight loss, but more so for overall health benefits. You def adapt unless you start progressing your workout. For example, I started walking 1.5 hours a day to avoid taking the bus, and the first two months I lost like ten pounds without changing my diet. I've been walking that same amount for ten years now and I haven't had any weight loss spikes because my body adapted to it. I didn't stop walking though because I do it for mental/physical health, NOT as a tool for weight loss.

    "Another day, another meal and not a big deal."
    I need that... tatooed on my arm or something. It's straightforward and true.

    I’m just a regular person who has no training or education in dietary/nutrition and I feel like I know so much more than anyone else just because of common sense, I know so much about diet and weight loss/gain and how it relates to food just from these videos and other videos , it’s sad that a lot of people are unaware of what they’re doing to themselves

    Personal trainer (kinesiologist/biologist) here. I tell my clients that it is 80% nutrition and 20% exercise. That exercise should be viewed as a reward. A celebration of what our bodies are capable of doing. It’s “You” time for you to de-stress. I have never heard of someone leaving a workout feeling more stressed out then when they walked in.
    While there is lots of research around exercise and weight-loss it will not be sustainable long term without proper diet. I would dove tail on that we will plateau with ANY exercise that we do without changing it up. To continue to see results through exercise, it’s important to not repeat the same exercises over and over whether that be aerobic or anaerobic training. Switch up speed, resistance, duration, intensity, every time you hit a workout 😊

    I would actually love to see a video discussing emotional eat or the social factors of healthy eating?
    Coming from someone who grew up with a negative relationship where I was "eating my emotions" almost daily I'd love to hear how you would advise people in this situation to revert to intuitive eating in a healthy way :)

    I've lost 71lbs and didn't restrict on food, instead I've learned a lot about serving sizes. Now I'm maintaining my weight and it's much easier than I thought. I only pay attention to serving size and balance (for example if I have pasta for lunch, I have veggies for dinner and vice versa). I allow myself to eat chocolate and drink hot spicy wine now that it's christmas. My weight doesn't go higher and I'm very happy about it. ☺️

    Abbey is the queen of snipping off split ends. I have never ever seen her hair looking straggly and patchy at the bottom - it always looks so healthy! Totally unrelated to the topic - but it had to be said!

    I love these TikTok review videos. If you do another one you should talk about the trend of using black seed oil for weight loss on TikTok. I'm a nutrition student and someone who recovered from an eating disorder after being a teenager who would buy into any of these kinds of "tips and tricks" for quick weight loss and it's really sad to see people fall for the same type of false claims and fad diet propaganda.

    Just a couple things I noticed:
    7:00 most people who actually need to lose weight aren't eating a healthy 2,000 calorie diet, they're likely eating quite a bit more, but i agree that cutting in half right away isn't sustainable
    7:49 the tip you are analyzing is already in context of watching what you eat, though the calories burnt from running for 10 minutes are very likely negligible if you aren't sprinting.
