@@kayagorzan no super sonic projectile cant whistle , simply become sound air can not penetrate inside the whistle part , and sound cant be generate as it is traveling faster then the speed of sound , it would need to be subsonic
The whistling rounds definitely have to be as subsonic as you can get. The shockwave created by it going too fast causes air to not really move across the whistle.
I heard the first one whistle as it hit, the double one whistle as it flew. If you ran the audio through a waterfall display I’m pretty sure it would be visible and interesting. Ham radio guys often use them.
I was going to suggest shooting the same stuff as the legal flares, but those are 37mm, and your cannon is a smidge too big at 38mm. Maybe with a bore sleeve they could fit? You could also easily stuff fireworks in the cannon, but that would be a massive fire hazard for your range. If you know of a nearby body of water that has new years or fourth of july shows, I suggest reqching out to the fireworks crew to see if they could make some loads for you to have your cannon in the show.
Messed around a bit with 12ga/9mm sub and mag rounds, to try and get a whistle. Subsonic, bigger holes work. Sonic, normal size holes. Super sonic, needs tiny changes, no holes at all. The only one we got to work looked like 3 orca whale fins layed over, around a center shaft...no idea how to explain the shape other than that. The odd thing was the 9mm shaped lead's did about as much damage as the 12ga lead slugs. And gave a horrifying scream, it was earsplitting.
I think you'd get better whistle with less powder. Also something I learned about arrows might have some effect: that is a nose heavy projectile is more stable. But it also may be too short for that too. Great vid! Thanks!
"I've pointed the cannon to the sky, let's see if we can hear this" Meanwhile two lost hikers in the no no zone. "Hey Charley, you hear something." "Yeah and it's getting closer." 😮 😂😂😂😂
I'd like to look into making some Parrott shells for your cannon. If you have never heard the sound they make, it's something. It's almost a buzzing scream. You. Ight need more than 100 yards, though.
Great dedication as that looked like another bright and hot day! Fun type of shell to test, but I did not see enough (any?) footage with the whistling? Hopefully that can be added in. But another great round to test and one I would not have thought of 🙂
You gotta listen really really closely. They are super quiet and the best ones are in the slowed down video. You can hear the whistle and then the cannon sound over kills it. The last one makes a "woo woo woo" when it comes in but you have to listen super closely. I enhanced the audio to give it the best shot. I didn't hear it when I first watched and I almost didn't post this one haha
im no engineer but the rounds seem to be going a bit too fast to whistle firstly out of the cannon but once they go about 50 of those yards or over the berm they start to sound off. you probably just need to keep testing to see what kind of shape you need to make them whistle all the way through the distance, the velocity just seems to be a bit too much for those types of whistle
it seems like the projectile is too tail heavy and this causes it to tumble. the first shot looks like it keyholed and the last shot sounded like it was tumbling. perhaps it would help to add a weight in the nose? great video nontheless
I have a 1/2 scale mountain howitzer that I made many years ago. The barrel is machined from 4130 steel and it takes a 2 inch diameter lead ball. As of yet it has never been fired. I'm thinking about making my own black powder. I have all the chemicals and equipment to do this, and have been reading tutorials and watching videos. Also, I plan to glaze the powder with graphite so that it will be more resistant to static electricity and be safer to handle. All the "how to" videos are for making powder for rifles & pistols. What grain size of powder do you use in your cannon? I'm thinking about using a cheese grater to corn my powder, and would like to know what size would work best.
We order ours from graff and sons and it’s their “cannon grind” so it’s super course. Check out everything black powder and he’s got some awesome video that should be super helpful!
Spoil alert for anybody reading That last one, if you were to have slowed down the sound, I guarantee you would sound like the Hollywood sound effect for incoming artillery. That was awesome.
I didn't know what to expect! You can for sure it but folks seem to think it was moving a but too fast to hear them well. We might revisit and drop the powder charge to see what happens!
So I’ve found it depends on the speakers you use. I can’t hear it on my phone except for the last round but I can hear it on my TV and my computer. It’s overwhelmed by the cannon boom on the first design almost instantly. I didn’t think to check that or I’d have mentioned it in the video!
I had to really slow the video down but you can make out the whistle in the pointy rounds but the sound of the cannon sorta drowns it out. The last our makes a "woo woo woo" sounds as I think it was tumbling in.
Great to see you doing your thing again mate, and im glad that the morons that run youtube have allowed me to get a notification about your new video even if it was a bit late, everyone knows what the rediculous "algorithm" is like, best of luck mate and i predict great things in the future of this channel 😊👍🙏
100 yards and it still went through the hood. That's pretty impressive!

@@TheMadsWeaponEngineer I see, thanks for the explanation
This channel is underrated as hell
100% I dare say he will grow and grow over time and do really well, I really hope so anyway, he's a good lad
Haha thanks! I appreciate that!
Thank you for a new episode.I always love watching your programming!
Thanks!
As a former gunner's mate I fully and completely endorse these ballistic shenanigans.

That makes total sense... We might give these a revisit with a smaller powder charge to see if we can up the whistle!
that might explain why i recall whistle rounds being more of a mortar or howitzer round
@@conscript900 That would make sense as well. Slower moving.
This man is the cannon equivalent to StyroPyro
😂🤣
I sure hope he has better luck with his medical ails than StyroPyro had as of late
When I clicked on this video I did not expect you to shoot these out of a cannon that’s so cool
Great job
Thanks!
Did you expect the whistle to work? What do you want to see us shoot next?
Nope. The wad at the back sticks to the round, blocking the sound.
I see we can now buy tungsten filament
That could be interesting.
I'm sure if you were further away from the cannon blast, or had a way to minimize the blast sound, it would have been a great scream.

Keep up the good work and content, way underrated channel. Love your stuff!

Man, how do you top a personal intro "..and this is my canon"? That's the kinda guy I want at parties
🤣😂
I thought it might whistle and glad it did. I find it amazing how robust 3D prints are in this use case. Thanks for another great video!
We just stumbled on a perfect wadding for 3d stuff yesterday too so hopefully we can get them some real tests. It's a game changer haha

We have Whistler rounds for Trebuchet. For a smooth bore, a pellet shape projectile will be stable.

A line throwing round would be cool or firing a big arrow.
I can make those happen! I've got soooo many on the list and it gets hard to pick what to test out!
Suppressed cannon to fire the whistle rounds when?
Haha I can do the suppressor and I've already got that planned but I don't know if the whistle would survive the suppressor!
@@TheCannoneer holy crap! I was messing around but that's seriously awesome if you pull that off!
I wonder if having so back heavy projectile shot from a smoothbore won't cause some stability issues.
it looks like it keyholed on the hood.
also the last shot sounds like it is tumbling
I think it does but it sure makes them much easier to aim haha those crazy light ones just go everywhere!
I would like to see a plug of dry ice use as a projectile....or a big block of dry ice hit by a cannon ball.
I can make that happen!
What’s needed here, is a combination whistling rocket /shell hybrid.
I leave the details to the undoubted lunatic who will fabricate it.
