  • Installing the holden ts model astra power steering pump is a common conversion done to replace the belt driven power steering pumps which is great for freeing up room in the engine bay and also adds some minor extra top end horsepower over the mechanical pump. They need around an 80amp fuse but in general they don't draw much power unless they are under load, an alternator upgrade is a must from the factory bosch alternators. I also just wanted to point out some general info for beginners on power steering for the HQ-WB series holdens.

Good advice on the hydraulic hose for them, I made a line up for my pressure side with cheap braided line and screw together fittings and it only lasted a dozen drives before the hose blew off and dumped oil straight onto extractors and caught fire. Luckily I had an extinguisher. I too now have a hydraulic hose line 👍

What fluid have you gone with? Did you match the box or the pumps specs? My understanding is that the pump requires synthetic and the box uses dex 111.

Not familiar with the Holden steering box but my old Toyota crown (1980s) power steer box has a pressure control solenoid on it. I have the astra pump ready to put in, am I just ignoring this solenoid I.e. remove it? Cheers man, good video

You need to use a controller mate that follows steering torque input and revs , the guys in the UK are doing this for the Volvo and Ford pump . Without the controller you'll find heavy steering when you really start to push quick lock to lock manoeuvres.

I noticed it on a hz 1tonner I had it had around a finger gap from hitting bump stops but I never looked much into it. Another tip - (4:10) I used a time delay module to delay the ignition feed and stop the slow spool up. You can set the timer for a 2-6 second delay and the pump starts instantly.
