Three voices. That were are pure magic I saw them in small clubs and Carnegie hall and peace marches. They could perform with mikes and still sound wonderful
Mary T. makes any song she sings in live, breathe, take on a life of its own, & become magical, majestic , heavenly... thx for all the songs & memories Mary T... *R.i.P.*
Mary was just so beautiful. She sounded like an angel from heaven. So clean so pure. So soft and so womanly. There is a kindness and sentiment in those eyes. A true woman and so absolutely rare these days.
They were the sounds of my youth as my mother played guitar and sang all their songs and my cousins came up from Newton ma and played on holidays. Folk music was the thing back then and Mom played beautiful guitar and sang wonderful. Gosh I cherish those memories.
When this song came out on a PP & M album, my friend and I "back engineered" it and deduced all the guitar chords and the actual guitar parts and then wrote down the harmonies for each voice for the three verses. When it came to actually doing the song it was so beautiful and emotional I would often get a lump in my throat singing the words. I still have all that in my archives and I still love this song. Such a sensitive rendition.
Loved this song ever since the first time I heard it as a kid... poignant sentiments increased with all life's love tribulations, esp when life herself throws at ya amazing significant loves that never ends, to know exactly who is our true love...for we'd only know for sure at the end of our lives.
i have had the rare good fortune to have met a few dozen of my film and music heroes when I was younger...Little Richard, Candy Candido, Merry Anders, Richard Boone, Michael Landon, and Peter Yarrow among them. I met Peter in the parking lot of the Sand Castle in Malibu and talked with him briefly about his music. He was a fine gentleman...and gentle man....and i thoroughly enjoyed telling him about the impact his music had made on me. I think this is, by far, the best version of this song ever recorded...no vocal tricks and run, jus a clear, plaintive message.
I saw Peter, Paul, & Mary in concert a few times, and I was lucky enough to see what turned out to be the last concert they ever gave, not long before Mary Travers passed away. Always loved them.
I use to sing this to my baby as well as John Denver's "Annie" she is now 33 and having her first baby. Those moments when I held her in my arms and rocked her to sleep were our wonderful memories together that know will ever take from us.

How sad we don't see it at the time. The one person ... we pick fights over silly things and lose them.... many many years later we understand ... had we just been a little more patient .. a little more understanding .. a little less selfish ... we too may have seen our days out in the company of that one ... and only one ... most wonderful person

@@leslieberinger2606 Thanks for your sympathy. But I'm just grateful to Ewen McColl to write such a powerful ballad that can take me back all those years to instantly remember. The greatest sadness would to be for me to forget her.
God Bless
Leonard Froud , And you will see your baby again, God Bless You 👵🏼❤️👶🏻
Leonard Froud Oh, what can I say, I am crying for you.
The all time best version of this song. The guitar accompaniment is exquisite and the harmonies just perfect.
This is good, but the definitive version must be by Roberta Flack.
The version by Gordon Lightfoot with just an acoustic guitar and voice is my favorite.
I thought they f*d it up pretty good. Essholes
@@Rob-fs8vq F yeah man, no comparison with these freaks
No chance . Roberta owns this. Nothing comes remotely close to it. You need to sort your ears out.
By FAR the best rendition of this song! SOOO, mellow.
God bless you Mary thanks for the memories I had just joined the navy when this came out thank you for the memories 🙏🙏❤️
Wow I noticed there's a lot of people who put thumbs down .
I can only imagine that those people , don't have a clue about music , possibly can't play or think they can do better !
When they don't understand about the time it was sung . Nor the true feeling of song !
Thanks Peter , Paul and Mary . How beautiful to hear class
willy Wilson you are so very right! They never heard of the “Hungry I”
My first record album was peter, paul & mary and I found them an inspiration for the folk guitar and harmonies. Now, 54 years later, I forgive those who can not understand that lyrics, music and harmony fly high above the tripe offered as music today.
@@patrickjensen9824 I love most music , love the music a little more , because there was more heart and meaning !
Not just made up because of something meaningless that happened in there life .
Look up Courtney hadwin on UA-cam . I believe you will appreciate her brilliance .
Thanks for your comment . Have a good day
It’s probably because Roberta Flack absolutely owns this song. This is a pretty piss poor version
@@julianlawrence-ball2279 well you obviously must have put thumbs down . Don't there are people who have no idea !! I'm sure there's some crap music that you think is good !! Like at kinda .
That's fine , quality isn't for everyone . Enjoy your music
Mary was just so beautiful inside and out!!
One of the most beautiful songs and the best version
The best version, without doubt, is Roberta Flack's 1969..
I've never seen them before. Gorgeous and skilful harmonies. Mary is a beauty too.
She was to her last performance!! Those eyes! That blonde mane!❤
Absolutely beautiful! 💝🌹💖
Indeed. But it sounds even better with Mary singing this alone.
have you heard the Robertaflack version mate
@@arthurdonachy The original Roberta Flack performance is the definitive version.
Nobody else comes even close; and I am saying that knowing that there are some really fantastic versions out there.
@@MelbaOzzie what a voice she had, heard she had a stroke in 16
@@MelbaOzzie Roberta Flack's version is NOT the "original" -- the original version is by Peggy Seeger. And this version by Peter, Paul & Mary came before Flack's.
Mary, I love your voice, your passion, and your hair. Rest in peace, beautiful lady.
Timeless and classic talent.
Thanks for checking in with us.
Mary was taken from all of us too, too early! What a special folk trio! Thank you PP and M for all your music through the years ... time moves forward and your music with time!!
There will never be a group like Peter Paul and Mary that excited and involved their audiance when they performed.
Three voices. That were are pure magic
I saw them in small clubs and Carnegie hall and peace marches. They could perform with mikes and still sound wonderful
The Seekers
The Seekers
Mary T. makes any song she sings in live, breathe, take on a life of its own, & become magical, majestic , heavenly... thx for all the songs & memories Mary T...
*R.i.P.*
Mary was just so beautiful. She sounded like an angel from heaven. So clean so pure. So soft and so womanly. There is a kindness and sentiment in those eyes. A true woman and so absolutely rare these days.
eloquently put! I agree
They were the sounds of my youth as my mother played guitar and sang all their songs and my cousins came up from Newton ma and played on holidays. Folk music was the thing back then and Mom played beautiful guitar and sang wonderful. Gosh I cherish those memories.
Even as a little kid I always had a crush on Mary. Almost 70 and still do.
Ditto, my friend.
Thanks Peter for sharing your experience with this song.
Paul is playing the bass line?
One of the most beautiful songs to be sung..ever!
The great Mary Travers was a true beauty with an angelic voice and tremendous talent.
I absolutely agree, Mr. Eastwood. Flacks version is in a movie of your's. "Unforgiven" is superb.
Mary's voice is so calming, so beautiful.
History repeats itself
Special lyrics! .... Always beautiful!
the greatest trio of all time no one even close
I don’t stop listening to the 50s, 60s & 70 s music. Actually the 1940’s so full of love too...50’s fun music.
8 saw Peter Paula and Mary in the early 70s in Springfield and thought she was the most beautiful woman ever. I still cherish the memory
Hello Sue, How are you doing?
I just can't get enough of these songs. It brings back memories of when I was just 7 yrs old and listening to them on a record player. 54 now in 2024.
Timeless, simply amazing and oh so beautiful! Loved this trio!❤️❤️❤️
Thanbks Naomi for checking in with us.
God was I in love with Mary... she was one of the greatest female folk singers ever.
Wonderful hip cool singers and the guys
You had to trust each other to do live shows with that harmony. Real performers
I saw Peter, Paul, & Mary in concert a few times, and I was lucky enough to see what turned out to be the last concert they ever gave, not long before Mary Travers passed away. Always loved them.
Hello,how are you doing?
I use to sing this to my baby as well as John Denver's "Annie" she is now 33 and having her first baby. Those moments when I held her in my arms and rocked her to sleep were our wonderful memories together that know will ever take from us.
It was May 4 1990 @ 5:30 PM near Seattle Wa. when I first saw you.You were the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. Today you are gone for now. Rest in peace,Emi A Young ( 1971-2013), " beautiful one".
Thanks Thom for checking in with us.
This takes me back to the night I fell in love with my former wife. After the all the loves of my life, she's still the one. Sadly, it ended after 2o years. I miss her now at 75 years old.
So sad my heart goes out for you l hope you will be okay God bless you ❤
Look after your self that wants in portent👍
There are some people we miss forever. Keep well
How sad we don't see it at the time. The one person ... we pick fights over silly things and lose them.... many many years later we understand ... had we just been a little more patient .. a little more understanding .. a little less selfish ... we too may have seen our days out in the company of that one ... and only one ... most wonderful person
My story even to the length of the marriage.
When I saw them in person was bout 58 years ago...my generation had it's good moments !
This is exactly how I felt about the love of my life. We didn't last until the end of time, but my love for him will.
So sorry to hear that. :'(
Thanks Ann for visiting The Hammer Works.
this is the most beautiful song ever!
We though we would b liver!
Now that the end is near. How far wenhave have travelled!
She is still with me after all these years and trials. God bless her!
These three were the sound of my youth. I was fortunate enough to see PP&M live a few years back. Their voices were still so compelling. I miss Mary so much.
Still gives me goosebumps 60 years later.
Such a beautiful woman in so many ways...I miss her
I thank my Mom for introducing me to this music. It is now a part of me.
I had the privilege of seeing PPM in concert many Years ago and they were unbelievably magical.
I am jealous lol
@@potdog1000 If it makes you feel better, I can truthfully add that they sounded every bit as good as their records, so just play your faves, close your eyes, and visualise their presence.
I got to see them, too. Many years ago. Such a great concert.
@@katbowl9971 I also saw PP&M years ago in concert, and I didn't go to many concerts. I saw them in the old Island Garden in West Hempstead NY in '67 or '68. It was heaven! Halfway thru at intermission I thought it was over, but my old friend who I was with said no, it's only half over! Wow... more heaven, I thought!
@@kevinrussell6530 That's great! Lots of cool memories.
This soulful rendition is a revelation! So gentle, so harmonious.
One lonely night in 1968, this track helped me set some kind of record for continuous replays of a song on vinyl. It still just makes me melt.
Thanks for checking out the site and for sharing your thoughts.
Awesome lyrics, takes us back nostalgically to our adolescent angst when most of us valued song and cheer above gold , so long.....
She was the best - amazing voice!!
What a lucky woman to have someone write a song like that for you.
Wonderful... Hard to describe the yearning to times when -- singing was real.
I agree, but Miley's song flowers is the best I've heard for some time. She can sing.
Beautiful beyond words. Beautiful beyond words....
almost not the work of humans...angels maybe. What a thing of beauty this is. I am humbled to have heard and watched it
+Paul Donohoe Thanks Paul for checking out the site & for sharing your thoughts.
Yes, truly a thing of angels. Wish my children's generation understood how great.
+Robi D I don't know how old your kids are, but I'm 28 (a millenial), and I think this is just perfection.
I was struck by how purely angelic Mary looks from the very beginning through when she begins singing. Then I still see glimpses of her angelic bearing throughout the song. Then I saw your comment, Mr. Donohoe, and totally agreed. Mary Travers, Karen Carpenter and Jackie Evancho touch me with their music.
well put Paul impressive comment
Powerful. The first time.... I got off that C-130 in Grenada, WI. On Army duty. I saw him across the airfield... and it was instant. .... Just his body language... did it. And then the face, the kiss, the love. 35 years together.... 31 of them with his massive stroke handicaps, but still NO man will ever ever come near who and what he is as a man, a human and a soul. My SGM Special Forces, Scuba, HALO and Jumpmaster!
Yes, they really were that good.
