I’m 86 and I remember when I took my love to a plane leaving me for a summer. I listened to this song on my way home during a major rainstorm and felt so sad. I love it and her still after nearly 60 years of marriage and I still love the song and PPM!
I am a 71yrs old Japanese man. when I listened this song, brings me the day when I was a junior-hischool student and played this song with my best friends.
And Ian Tyson of Ian and Sylvia, who wrote the Canadian classic, "Four Strong Winds", and with Sylvia was the first to record "Early Morning Rain" thus kick-starting Gordon's career, passed away just four months before Gordon.
I have never heard a song delivered with so much tenderness and loving care. Every single note and word is treated as if it were a precious fragile treasure.
I once heard this song during an early morning rain, getting ready for grade school in the late 60's. For reasons unknown, my sister was playing it on her little blue-and-white RCA phonograph while we were in that final rush to head on down the steps and out the door. To this day, every time I hear this song I think of that early morning rain, and every time there's an early morning rain, this song plays on an old phonograph in my memory.
Funny how it can take you imeadeatly straight back through the smoke ringed canyons of your mind, to a very particular moment in time . Me...aged about 9...getting ready on a very miserable dull grey, and wet day for school mid 60s..

Actually, they were brought together by manager Al Grossman in 1961 after auditioning lots of vocalists. He wanted to take advantage of the burgeoning folk revival in NY. Boy, did he pick the right three singers!
This still strikes a chord with me… 1966 was a pivotal and life changing year for me.. it was a time when I found myself rejected and abandoned by a love that I thought was true. And I was literally there, not actually on a runway, but an airline strike kept me from flying away, and I needed to find my way that foggy morning on a train instead.
Yes they do, good singers still exist, they just go unnoticed because the studios need someone to make the newest “mumble rap” record that will sell ten million for some reason.
Gordon Lightfoot touches that sad place of longing in the heart across the chasm of choices made. Such effective poetry. This version takes the energy down where Paul's deep voice has us linger, stuck there on the ground in the early morning rain. This morning, with my loved one far away and an aching in my heart, I am moved.

1966 I was a young dad then. I had a beautiful wife and a great little son. They are both gone now cancer has stolen them both for me . I miss the music from back then but nowhere near how much I miss my family . All alone now.
I'm so sorry. I am also- this song takes me back to when my husband and so many of our friends were being sent overseas- sometimes back then some sang the lyrics a little differently. I miss him so much. He died on the 4th of July.

I have seen Gordon about 7 times live in Toronto and was always impressed with his composition and music. He is a true story teller. I do have to agree with many of you here that this is an exceptional version of this great song.

This song feels lonely, homesick, and sad. There are few songs that evoke that kind of genuine emotion. PP&M did right by this Gordon Lightfoot masterpiece.

PP&M are of the most well known cover bands ever; Pete Seeger (If I had a Hammer/Blowing in the Wind), Bob Dylan, Gordon Lightfoot etc. At least Puff the Magic Dragon was somewhat original (though from a poem).
I can not believe its been 51 years since this song came out. I was a 12 year old boy back in 1966 and love the folk music of the 60's. Peter, Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and Bob Dylan made folk music cool to listen to. They were great social conscious songs that relate to time immemorial. And now that I am 64 years old...This song still captures my heart. I consider the 60's as the greatest decade in Folk and Rock & Roll music. Priceless!

Like so many of the other commenters, I am in my 70's. I have very fond memories of P, P, and M. The lyrics, "You can't jump an airplane like you can a freight train," have stuck with me for decades, and influenced some important personal decisions I made. Great memories. Thank you.
It’s time for a revival of folk music. It takes you to a calmer, deeper, more reflective place. I bet a lot of people would enjoy a break from the crazy, frenetic times we’ve been in for so long.
There is a folk community alive in the country. There are music festivals in the summer. Check out the Newport Folk Festival. One of my favorites who we lost recently is Bill Staines.

The talent from our generation cannot be matched. Beautiful music, beautiful time to grow up. Sure there were problems, but people were kinder, had respect, and it was a more innocent time. When I look into the eyes of some of our young people today, I see such emptiness. I'm afraid for the future of our world.
We took our daughters to Las Vegas for 21st birthday and were fortunate to see these wonderful singers live. Best show in Las Vegas, and we had seen most of them.
I am 66. Listened to this when I was a little girl. Then later on it reminded me of when I was stuck in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba as a young person in the Navy. Hated being so far away from my family.
I had the good fortune of hearing them perform this song at the Mt. Winery about about 15 or so years ago. It was one of the best song of the night! WOW!

I was 10 in 1966, loved the song then and and now, after all these years. Mary was extremely beautiful, and I liked it when people remarked that she walked with integrity through life...
She lived in the next town over from me. Was a regular person, pushing her carriage at the grocery store. Did a lot of charity events...a wonderful woman!

Like so many of the other commenters, I am in my 70's. I have very fond memories of P, P, and M. The lyrics, "You can't jump an airplane like you can a freight train," have stuck with me for decades, and influenced some important personal decisions I made. Great memories. Thank you.

The term "breathtaking" is wonderfully descriptive of the delicate combination of the genius of G Lightfoot & these marvelous artists [ both their precise singing harmony, that marvelous guitar picking and the fellow who played their cello, out of camera frame-- I've forgotten his name, just now] .

Born in 1968, I grew up with this song as my parents had a 'best of PPM' compilation album. Always loved it so much and always will.
The talent from our generation cannot be matched. Beautiful music, beautiful time to grow up. Sure there were problems, but people were kinder, had respect, and it was a more innocent time. When I look into the eyes of some of our young people today, I see such emptiness. I'm afraid for the future of our world.
We took our daughters to Las Vegas for 21st birthday and were fortunate to see these wonderful singers live. Best show in Las Vegas, and we had seen most of them.
The dynamics of an acoustic performance by masters at the craft is truly something to behold.
Liquid gold. Words and music in such harmony that your soul crys out for more. God bless PP&M.

I had the good fortune of hearing them perform this song at the Mt. Winery about about 15 or so years ago. It was one of the best song of the night! WOW!

This is a stunning performance. Saw them at a concert in New Zealand in 1967 when I was a teenager. I still love their music.

I was 10 in 1966, loved the song then and and now, after all these years. Mary was extremely beautiful, and I liked it when people remarked that she walked with integrity through life...
She lived in the next town over from me. Was a regular person, pushing her carriage at the grocery store. Did a lot of charity events...a wonderful woman!
She did walk with integrity. I am your age.
I got up close in 1980, their 1st reunion tour and she mugged real nice for me and my 2 1/4 camera!
By the way Lynette, why wouldn't she walk with integrity all her life? You and I strive to do so, and she was an icon from the folk era. Granted, many celebs of the time did not, I see your point.

Saw them in Newport in 63, with a ton of my friends Half are now gone, but I suspect they are listening to this in heaven now. I hope Mary is with them all. Yah the tears always flow when I hear this, but not sad ones Remembrance, along with amazement at the beauty and harmony When Mary joins in at 0.39 I lose it, well maybe a few sad ones, I lost another one a few weeks ago. But I shall be listening to this for countless years, many many many many ..............
