A lot of Joan's early folk music recordings were of Child ballads, a collection of over 300 English and Scottish traditional ballads and their American variants that were anthologized by Francis James Child in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Her mother was born in Scotland and her father in Mexico, so she heard a lot of European and Latin American folk music in her youth.

I’m in my late 60’s so I also have more miles behind than in front. Youth is not wasted or lost on the young, I don’t think. It just takes its absence to be fully appreciated. Joan was and is an inspirational person with a heavenly voice!
Have you heard her rendition of House of the Rising Sun? Her singing there is the most beautiful I've ever heard. But it makes the song almost too painful to appreciate.
Nobody who never listened to Joan Baez before is prepared for that voice. Joans voice is so incredibly clear and soft, yet it hits you like a hammer when you hear it for the first time. It still gives me goosebumps after all these years.
The song was written by railway construction workers and became a folk sensation. It came to limelight in the music industry with the original covers later... However, the beauty of the song is not just in the haunting melody but the 500 miles symbolizes so much more than just a journey it a place away from home.. It's the loss and sadness if being separated from the supreme being... It is an echo of the pain every person feels when away from home. It is a song that invariably, particularly with Joan's voice accompanied with her shy smile never fails to bring tears... That that are a mix of sadness and of beauty at the same time, of longing and melancholy along with hope at the same time...Joan, you're so beautiful and your singing so angelic that I can just feel blessed seeing and hearing you. You're cleared and thank you for blessing is with your renditions..

Thank you for sharing this background, Em. It helps me understand just why this song, out of all the countless ones I saw in concert during the 60s, is such a standout ... for its honesty and purity of integrity. It indeed speaks to the universal human condition, of yearning for our Heavenly home! This is a classic - and you've helped me know why! Bravo and thank you!!!

I was a huge Joan Baez fan back in the 60s, I had all her albums and would sit in my room listening to her songs for hours on end. She had the perfect voice for folk music, it was almost like a mystical magic how her singing captured the dark corners of my soul. I got the chance to see Dylan in concert in 1965, I only wish I had the opportunity to see a Joan Baez concert in person... That would've been my finest hour.
I saw her twice. Once at the Chicago Auditorium with no amplification and we were up in the nose bleed section. It was like she was sitting next to me . Crystal clear beautiful voice.
My parents used to play her albums on a long play record machine, and I growp up listening to her songs. Incredible voice and honest performances, God bless Joan!!

I'm literally crying ryt now. Ohhhh god !! I miss my old days... My Childhood . Wish it comes back 😢😢
Lord I'm 7,500 miles from home ....
Amazing voice, stunning character, simple but heartfelt words...
11000 miles from home
Heard this song 50 years ago. Today hearing it again (the LPs, CDs, DVDs are long gone). Baez is as beautiful and relevant, maybe more, than ever. Proof of the everlasting presence of how we feel and express from the heart. Joan, may you and your songs live forever in the hearts of humankind.
it's fathers day... joan baez was my fathers favorite musician. when i started playing the guitar, he always told me how she taught herself. he died of cancer 4 years ago, when i was 15. now i'm twenty. i can't buy my father a "best dad" mug today but i can listen to this and think of him
This is so heart felt. Stay strong .
Merci pour ta voix sublime...inoubliable...😍
Oh my God, what a song. Whenever I listen to this song my whole childhood and teenage is recalled instantly in my mind. I simply love the beautiful and gorgeous voice and lyrics. I simply get goosebumps whenever I listen to this.
You shaped generations with your music and your courage. Thank you. Unfortunately, many has seemed to have forgotten your philosophy of peace and justice. I am lucky to say I have not and still use your music to inspire and motivate me to continue to fight for what is right. Bless you Joan!
What is right?! @Jackson How
@@remojacob8016 Ah yes ... that indeed is the right question, Remo! Be receptive rather than presume to say what it is, and God will send you the answer ... when you're not expecting it! It happened just that way to me. But I couldn't "figure out" what was right - that was quite beyond me. Receiving wisdom, answers ... that's where it comes. Of course, we seek, but then we wait to be given the Answer. God be with you, my friend. And thanks for asking the right question! I admire you very much for that!
Que voz linda possui Joan Baez! De quantas nuances sua voz é capaz! É impressionante! Uma das maiores cantoras de que o mundo já teve notícia. E ela continua na ativa até hoje. Que bom !!!
Thank you You Tube. I had forgotten a lot of the old songs and singers without you. Who ever came up with the ideal off You Tube. thank you so very much.
Eu gostaria de ouvir tudo da Joan....eu ouvi há uns 20 anos atrás e sentia saudade...hoje estou feliz de mais uma vez ouvir

Well I'm walking down this track
I've got tears in my eyes.
Trying to read a letter from my home.
And if this train runs me right I'll be home next Saturday night
Now I'm 500 miles away from home.
oh my that voice is so devastatingly beautiful. brought tears to my eyes. such a beautiful song
This song has soul and says so many things in few lines. Her voice is angelic and melancholic. I cant stop playing it again and again.
Lost my brother this year.... This song is for you Brother 😘
This has brought back strong evocative memories of my childhood, going back 53 odd years. Much love, Joan Baez. 🌹❤️
Such a beautiful voice, she never really got the recognition she deserved. Beautiful.
My parents used to play her albums on a long play record machine, and I growp up listening to her songs. Incredible voice and honest performances, God bless Joan!!
Her voice has an almost ethereal quality to it just gorgeous
This has gotta be the best version I’ve ever heard, and that is saying something
I found that too.
I am an Indian, back in school they used to make us sing this song for music class! mannn this brings so many memories!!😭❤
What Tribe or Nation?
One of the most beautiful voices I’ve ever heard, always a favourite
the sound of the guitar is quite well matched with Joan's songs which is so beautiful, pure and innocent
What a beautiful song this is. And very beautiful singer she is. Thank you very much nice song. I'm 64 years old, japanese. Have a nice day. 2021.3.31 Today is cloudy. But i'm so happy.
Used to live abroad for 14 yrs. I’m back in my beautiful country and came back to life. No loneliness is too small!
Made me cry when I heard it decades ago. Still does.
Just an artist, her guitar and a timeless gem. This is just pure 💎
June 5, 1965, BBC Television Theatre, Shepherd's Bush, London
Thanks for the date. I saw her in 1964 in Forrest Hills, NY. I was shocked to see this, knowing it was from that time.
Thanks
Veronica Tedderson she had just turned 24 the previous January. 78 now in 2019...beautiful voice!
would have to be a BBC show, LOL, probably the only time she performed to an audience in suits and ties !
Jimi page woz ere
Her voice is so incredibly clear and soft.
You know the song Jab koi bat right they cheated the song
@Stainless Steel I can't get what are you saying
@Stainless Steel Kumar Sanu cheated from them
@Stainless Steel he wanted to say a Bollywood song is made copying the tune of this 500 miles song.
The song actually is an old folk song with no *clear* indication as to who first penned the song. Also, Rajesh Roshan wasn't the first to get inspired, sample, or steal (however one may put it). The song has been re-recorded in many different languages by many different artists in many different countries.
I am one of the audience who are listening her so patiently🥰 sitting there...
The perfect voice for her generation. I idolized this woman in the sixties. I can't think of anyone today who captures the spirit of the times as she did.
The voice can bring in tears even those who don't understand the language 😊🫶
In her eyes, I see sadness and honesty
No auto tune. All raw. That's talent.
indeed
