A lot of Joan's early folk music recordings were of Child ballads, a collection of over 300 English and Scottish traditional ballads and their American variants that were anthologized by Francis James Child in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Her mother was born in Scotland and her father in Mexico, so she heard a lot of European and Latin American folk music in her youth.
Nobody who never listened to Joan Baez before is prepared for that voice. Joans voice is so incredibly clear and soft, yet it hits you like a hammer when you hear it for the first time. It still gives me goosebumps after all these years.

My dad used to sing this to me as a kid. He was really young when he left his parents to study abroad before he and my mom brought our family to the US and I remember as a kid thinking that my dad wrote this song because of how much he would sing it and how it related to his life that he would tell us about any chance he got. This song really brings back memories that I nearly forgot and I’m sure my dad will eventually forget too but for now I’m glad we got to share memories this song brings us.

Just turned 62 a few weeks ago, I feel like getting younger and younger...which you could see being a positive aspect of one's own life: the older your body gets, the younger your spirit you feel; they say that growing old is like being a child again but then why is everyone afraid to get old? No, in truth it is not aging that is scary but it is senility. I’ve never met senile old men, while, contrary to this, I have known many adults who remained irreversibly children.

I feel privileged to be alive. If I weren't, how would I have heard Joan Baez? Her voice seems to be coming from heavens, each note like a raindrop, her breath like breeze.
This is possibly the first English song I ever heard - my kindergarten teacher sang this song in class during day 2 or 3 in school. My 3-yr old heart and brain couldn’t process how i felt listening to this, but yeah, it did make me imagine a lonely traveller on the road..my first experience of “bittersweet” emotions, I’m sure
Everything is so genuine and raw ...the audience has no phones or camera to get themselves distracted, but where all 100% engaged..so unlike today! So touching😥.
I was a huge Joan Baez fan back in the 60s, I had all her albums and would sit in my room listening to her songs for hours on end. She had the perfect voice for folk music, it was almost like a mystical magic how her singing captured the dark corners of my soul. I got the chance to see Dylan in concert in 1965, I only wish I had the opportunity to see a Joan Baez concert in person... That would've been my finest hour.
When I was 20 years old, I had a chance to stay inn the U.S. My room mate, Debbie used to sing Joan Baez' songs,I t was a sort of culture shock at that time but still now ,75 of age, her songs returns to my mind again. I would like to sing songs a again , now ,when we human is facing war here and there. yasuko
I lived in Glasgow for a little over a year Back in 2014 for my postgraduate studies. I don’t know what connection keeps pulling me to Scotland . I feel a certain sense of patriotism which I don’t think I ever felt for my own country. Don’t get me wrong, I love my country. But I breath in the memories of Scotland and everything I experienced there. Scotland made me feel so accepted. It’s been 10 years since, and every time my throws tough times at me I close my eyes and think of my days in Scotland and everything gets better . I love Scotland 🏴 the land of the brave.
Her version is the best, but Elvis Presley version is also touching and special! There is actually only an improvised home version of it, which makes it even more amazing
Joan's voice is heavenly one of the most beautiful but also please listen to the version of the song by The Seekers the Australian folk band. It was the beginning of new life for me and over the ensuing years I have learned what it means to be "Albertan". These creeps back East have no understanding of what the West is all about . @@harleyquiinnnn I try my best to explain. In those tough times (1960s'), folk songs were "good medicine" for the souls of people. To my knowledge, she, Joan Baez, was one of the “ stars" at that time. "Her contemporary folk music often includes songs of protest or social justice." (quoted from the web). Still, she cares about her country for the present time. I don't know whether there is anyone like her in the “ singing industry worldwide" nowadays. So, I said she was the gift for the generation of 1960s.
What an ethereal voice with that divine shimmer!! :) Yes, I had a crush on her in my college days (1960s), and I fulfilled a lifetime desire to see and hear her in person just a few years ago. I love that other-worldly gaze and the sincerity of her singing. Brave and determined, she was in Hanoi with the Friends Service Organization making humanitarian peace efforts during American bombing of that city. Nothing "phoney" about "Joanie!" Outspoken and controversial, to be sure, but still admired by many of us who were - and are - captivated by her music :) :)
People criticise her sometimes, but I've been a fan a LONG time. Since the 1960's. She's one of the activists who's sincere about her beliefs and does not take sides. She simply wants the violence, war, torture, etc. to STOP and that's it.
scorpion19142001 You might be right ... but if we ALL want peace, how come so many people are torturing and killing others? Are we humans so dumb we'll succumb?? :( I once heard: "What if somebody threw a war and nobody came???" Folks like Joanie never give up because we believe that humans can learn their lessons in time to save the world [We might need it later! :)] :)

Early in their relationship, in the 1960's, my parents would go on dates to cafe's to hear folk music like this, years before I was born. After my mom died in 2008, I was visiting my dad, and we went to a cafe where he and mom used to go to hear such folk music, and there was still live music for the diners. But it wasn't the peaceful, soulful music, like Joan Baez's singing here, the kind of folk music my parents enjoyed in their younger years. Rather, it was some angry contemporary rock band, with loud drums, and the speakers blasting the angry songs at an unnaturally loud volume. I think my dad had entered the cafe hoping to relive some of his memories of his early romance with my mom, but the music was just all wrong; it was music that was alien to my dad, and I felt bad for him. We didn't stay long at the cafe. I'm not condemning contemporary rock music; I'm just recalling a poignant moment with my dad, may he rest in peace.
Heard this song 50 years ago. Today hearing it again (the LPs, CDs, DVDs are long gone). Baez is as beautiful and relevant, maybe more, than ever. Proof of the everlasting presence of how we feel and express from the heart. Joan, may you and your songs live forever in the hearts of humankind.
I saw her twice. Once at the Chicago Auditorium with no amplification and we were up in the nose bleed section. It was like she was sitting next to me . Crystal clear beautiful voice.
I am over 70 and was lucky that I lived in the sixties and fell in love with rock and roll, those were the days yet with very sweet memories plus lots of beautiful music with meaningful. thanks.
This is the kind of woman you could fall so desperately in love with, that you would lose yourself completely. I feel sorry for anyone who did, but i also envy them more than I can express.
Bobby Gookin In the 1990s, I was honored to have met and to have interacted with her father twice. He lived on a houseboat in SF bay docked in Marin, California. The first time I went there I didn't know who he was. Being there to fix his wash machine, it was just another service call to me. But, soon he proved unique. He had some 'contraptions' he had built for the outside of his houseboat which he showed to me. Going inside, I saw a piano and several guitars. I asked him about them and he said his family was musical and that Joan Baez and Mimi Farina were his daughters. Only later did I find out he was an inventor and famous in his own right. About a year later, I went there again for his clothes dryer. A unique guy...
This video gives me the chills for some reason.. Such a beautiful rendition of Hedy's 500 Miles. And not to mention, Joan looks absolutely gorgeous here. :-) I'm glad she's still touring, singing, and inspiring.

Back in old days only people with real talent can be on television show
I feel privileged to be alive. If I weren't, how would I have heard Joan Baez? Her voice seems to be coming from heavens, each note like a raindrop, her breath like breeze.
This is possibly the first English song I ever heard - my kindergarten teacher sang this song in class during day 2 or 3 in school. My 3-yr old heart and brain couldn’t process how i felt listening to this, but yeah, it did make me imagine a lonely traveller on the road..my first experience of “bittersweet” emotions, I’m sure
her voice always make my eyes watery. its not a feeling of sorrow nor happiness, but just intensity and depth.
Me too
Those are the best songs, neither happy or sad, just moving.
What a beautiful description
Yeah... Damn I am in a real state after that 😂 totally burst out crying
Yes😢
Everything is so genuine and raw ...the audience has no phones or camera to get themselves distracted, but where all 100% engaged..so unlike today! So touching😥.
Amen.
I am literally discovering this on my phone ... sigh ... :) the LORD works in myseterious ways.
So true. She comes into view and there's a Wembley type roar, then total silence, total respect. Then the slip of a girl sings... So enchanting.
What a treasure to have this recording of one of the greatest singers, performing in duet with the audience.
That vibrato and vocal range. Jeesh, what music they had way back when.
Indeed. The vibrato is almost perfect, especially in the high pitches. Combined with the deeper background audience, it forms a beautiful composition.
That was and still is her extraordinary range. My God I love her.
You Should Really listen to Lata Mangeshkar songs for vibrato n tunes
Right now, I am all alone in quarantine in Turkey, and I've never felt more connected to this song.
Love from Ur Brother From India❤️❤️.Be Safe And Happy 🙂🙂❤️❤️

@@ebmserdarak5379 haha, i'm fine now, don't worry. I'm back in my home country
I had forgotten just how simple and elegant this song was, and just how softly and heartfelt Joan was singing it.
This version is absolutely beautiful! I am in tears from the emotion in her voice.
Yes she is a deep , soft and powerful singer
This has brought back strong evocative memories of my childhood, going back 53 odd years. Much love, Joan Baez. 🌹❤️
Simply don't believe there's another singer past or present who could do this song better. Tears in my eyes, thank you Joan!
Her version is the best, but Elvis Presley version is also touching and special! There is actually only an improvised home version of it, which makes it even more amazing
Joan's voice is heavenly one of the most beautiful but also please listen to the version of the song by The Seekers the Australian folk band. The late Judith Durham, RIP, has an incredible voice and does a beautiful version which for me is the best.
I don't actually think there's a bad version it's such a beautiful song ❤
@@alexcawthorne811 Absolutely, Alex. Always loved Judith, a pin up from my youth, but only really recall her from the chart hits. Never heard her sing this, but not a doubt she'd do it superbly, I'll dig it out, thanks for the heads up. Fab version of I am an Australian on here too by the Seekers.
@@jimg9003 oh I've heard her sing I am an Australian even as a "Pommie" it makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. I don't know what it is about Australian songs but they are always very moving and emotional - Judith will be sorely missed by many but she left us so many wonderful songs and memories.
Joan Baez is so good ... the entire audience starts singing with her, so she takes the harmony.
Yes.. so lovely..gives me chills…
@@amandaleo8002 yes chills over and over

Thanks for the date. I saw her in 1964 in Forrest Hills, NY. I was shocked to see this, knowing it was from that time.
Thanks
Veronica Tedderson she had just turned 24 the previous January. 78 now in 2019...beautiful voice!
would have to be a BBC show, LOL, probably the only time she performed to an audience in suits and ties !
Jimi page woz ere
This is the one and only song that me my sister used to sing while listening as a kid, now she is married and lives in Canada. I miss her so badly.
Her voice is incredible-it touches my heart.
This song has been covered by many singers.
Joan Baez' version is one of the best.
+George Vreeland Hill i am so happy that you say "one of the best...." we are so fortunate to be able to access many versions of great songs and singers and in most cases there aren't definitive versions.... and for the record I do think she has a wonderful voice...
+John London I AM BRAZILIAN..... HAVE YOU EVER HEART WITH THE PROCLAIMERS?
every joan baez songs are one of the bests.
No comparison.
Avis que je partage à 1000 % !
I was NOT prepared for THAT voice! WOW!!!! Angelic!
When I first came west in the late 70's I was enraptured by her and her angelic voice. I had been robbed of my heritage by the Ottawa cabale . and had no where to turrn so I came to Alberta. It was the beginning of new life for me and over the ensuing years I have learned what it means to be "Albertan". These creeps back East have no understanding of what the West is all about . They will never know, but they wil try to kill us because they do not understand.
"Independence , Alberta's only hope."
Have ignored this lady’s talent most my life, thank you you tube for allowing me make up for lost time
maintaining the intrinsic harmony with a singing-along untrained audience was a truly remarkable feat.......her talents are unique.

Divine voice from heaven. God welcomes and showers his blessings to the soul away from five hundred miles🌷🌷🌷
Her voice, her eyes, her guitar - they are not just her gifts from God, they are the gifts of her generation.
Could you explain what you mean by the gift of her generation?
@@harleyquiinnnn I try my best to explain. In those tough times (1960s'), folk songs were "good medicine" for the souls of people. To my knowledge, she, Joan Baez, was one of the “ stars" at that time. "Her contemporary folk music often includes songs of protest or social justice." (quoted from the web). Still, she cares about her country for the present time. I don't know whether there is anyone like her in the “ singing industry worldwide" nowadays. So, I said she was the gift for the generation of 1960s.
@@ngg9715 Thank you for explaining :)

I am in Lahore Pakistan just heard for the first time totally fell in love it's April 15 2024❤
God… if I were there listening to this for the first time, I would be die from goosebumps 😅
In her eyes, I see sadness and honesty
Bob Dylan and Steve Jobs fell for her. As if I ever stood a chance.
Utsav Mukherjee , a very special woman with an angelic voice.
Utsav Mukherjee is it true ?
Bob Dylan USED Joan to further his own career~~~~~she loved him. He did not ever love her.
She wasted her precious time on crap like Dylan who can't even sing
@@Aldarinn atleast don't say THAT crap
This is a massive benefit of UA-cam. I would never have come across this ever in my life. Thank you
This is my favourite version of this beautiful song 🔥👌🏾
What an incredible voice!
We are all born with something, if only the ability to appreciate a voice like this.
Joan Baez has the voice of an Angel

I love the way she sings the harmony line during the second verse..and let's the audience carry the melody. Brilliantly beautiful.

Lovely voice
It is definitely that like your comment😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂.
I am one of the audience who are listening her so patiently🥰 sitting there...
My uncle sold his guitar to the woman who wrote this song, Hedy West, back in the day. Makes it even cooler for me to listen to this great tune.
Such a beautiful song she wrote whom ur granpa sold the guitar. 🙂❤️
A haunting beautiful voice...........
that is what I said about her voice, long ago , I agree, Dennis Satterfield
Heard this song 50 years ago. Today hearing it again (the LPs, CDs, DVDs are long gone). Baez is as beautiful and relevant, maybe more, than ever. Proof of the everlasting presence of how we feel and express from the heart. Joan, may you and your songs live forever in the hearts of humankind.
Jab koi baat bigad jayee.... Love from india❤
Made me cry when I heard it decades ago. Still does.
I saw her twice. Once at the Chicago Auditorium with no amplification and we were up in the nose bleed section. It was like she was sitting next to me . Crystal clear beautiful voice.
She was so confident that the audience had the melody that she happily dropped into the harmony.
Merci pour ta voix sublime...inoubliable...😍
I am over 70 and was lucky that I lived in the sixties and fell in love with rock and roll, those were the days yet with very sweet memories plus lots of beautiful music with meaningful. thanks.
This is the kind of woman you could fall so desperately in love with, that you would lose yourself completely. I feel sorry for anyone who did, but i also envy them more than I can express.
wow
poor old Robert House!
So true. So pure and beautiful
Well put!
This song appeared in 1961 😮❤
An everlasting song by Joan Baez. Her voice will surely knock you from the bottom of heart.
Back when people had actual talent. No autotune and she's playing the guitar at the same time.
@Warm sperm I don't think he mean't everyone.. probably he was refering to nowadays most of the people
@JJ I love whataboutism
This video gives me the chills for some reason.. Such a beautiful rendition of Hedy's 500 Miles. And not to mention, Joan looks absolutely gorgeous here. :-) I'm glad she's still touring, singing, and inspiring.
She looks like a pretty American Indian girl....
