Magic lantern doesnt remove the limit, it only restarts it automatically after the limit has been hit within about 1 sec. There are other ways like using an intervalometer and setting ur shutter button as the record button in custom button settings, and setting the intervalometer to 29:59 or like 30 minutes to hit the shutter button and it will automatically restart video recording at that time. There are several videos on it, watch it to make sure I didnt say wrong time. Last but not least, that whole tax reason is bs, as cameras are built differently for different markets to begin with, and software / firmware are different in different markets also. From a coding perspective this is a non issue, as Let's say canon for instance has cameras that are only meant for canon usa market and vice versa for many other markets. Hence the reason for grey market cameras that are actually built by canon but often not to the same specs or different parts used for some foreign markets like with the 5d mark iv, and same thing for lenses, is it a quality difference I dont know. But electronics built with different features in different markets are nothing new, like dvd players etc... There is a limit because they figure it cuts into there camcorder or video recorder business model by letting u record infinite amount of time same as one of those devices from a device which is designed primarily for photos.
Magic Lantern doesn’t have a record limit. I have recorded 31 minutes one time with my 5D mark III and there was no cut at the 29:59 timestamp. It was all continuous, no 1 sec in between. It stopped at 31:20 only because I ran out of storage.
Handsome fella ^.^ I’m glad to know that regardless I won’t be faced with the issue of it stopping after 30 mins now that I got your input for MY NEW SONY A6400 that just came in!!!! Wish I could I have seen this video at the time I was using my Canon DSLR camera, it would have helped me pace myself better for my recordings. Keep the content coming!
I have a Canon Rebel T6 and my camera will only record clips around 12 minutes opposed to 30. My first assumption was my card is too small, but after doing some research, any class 10 card (which is what I have) should have no issue recording for 30 minutes of length, I then tried to re-format my card which also didn't help. Now i can't figure out why I cant get my recording to last 30 minutes. I'd love some guidance if you have any.
Yep, I just looked up the manual for the T6 and in the movie shooting section it says that recording stops automatically when the file size reaches 4GB. So that must coincide with the 12 minutes.
One of the biggest reasons I chose my Lumix G85 was because it could record continuously as long as I had power and memory. It does chop up the files in 4GB chunks, but they are easily combinable in Premiere. Since I was doing some concert recordings, I needed that continuous feature. One day I would love to upgrade to a Canon or Nikon, but I won't as long as they continue to put that silly artificial time limit on there. Hopefully it's true that the tax will go away one day. Until then, my trusty Panny will get the job done!
I had no idea these cameras have recording limits. I just checked, and my Nikon D5100 has a 20-minute recording limit. I was planning to record my performance as part of a choir group and was going to set the camera on the mezzanine stage.
Great information! I'm filming an interview soon... so I can record multiple 29min videos, right? I just need to set a timer to end the recording before 30 mins?
I'm a noob but my daughter graduated with a degree in cinematography so when I decided to move from taking pictures of my retail store items with my cell phone and move up a bit in the world, she recommended the Cannon M50 MII perfect for that and blogs, youtube videos, etc but even she was unaware of why there was a limit on my camera of 30 minutes recording time when I just bought a 512GB card. You explained it very well and answered by the question but why we in the USA are restricted by an EU restriction if I understand you correctly "is lame"! Damn, I thought I was upgrading only to find my cell phone records longer? I usually run several recording devices around me simultaneously for B-Roll film for my UA-cam channel and this just sucks! But thank you, I was wondering if I got scammed by the company who made my SIM card thinking they were faking the actual size of memory in it. Mystery solved!
Yea. Unfortunately the Canon M50 m2 is a pretty bad camera when it comes to video. Aside from the 30 minute limit, autofocus is absolutely terrible when using 4K because of the huge crop added when in that mode. Something like the Sony ZV-E10 or a6100 both hand NO crop in 4K with great autofocus in ALL modes plus no recording limits.
@@CamberFilmSchool Sucks for me. I knew nothing of them and it was the one my daughter suggested for me as a beginner. I've already learned 4k is almost pointless on this camera as you said and that 30k may be the breaking point of my selling it to start over again.
it happened to me as well douring an interview. My Lord! It was so embarrassing explaining why I had an issue with my camera.. and till now I didn't know the reason, I thought it was for overheating
Thank you I learned some new things from your video I have a Nikon DSLR 3100 and it records for 10 minutes. I'm looking for a way to record at least half an hour or even longer if possible
A lot of older DSLR cameras have shorter limits because they were designed with video just being an added extra rather than a serious part of the camera. So there are some limits you just won’t be able to get past with older cameras.
How I found out about this limit through producing comedy as a service to my performers I use my Canon Rebel SL3 to record their sets, which since it's a show I produce and use my own equipment for I give them for free. I thought if I just pressed record and left it, I could focus on hosting and front of house stuff. Luckily around the 30 min mark I checked the camera, saw the message and pressed record again in a panic. Now the problem specifically in this case is that when comedians are sending their tapes to Bookers for local shows and clubs, it is a requirement the footage is uncut, edited, or manipulated. To ensure laughter isn't being canned or they haven't removed a joke from their set that didn't land. So now this comedian who I had to re-press record for can only use half of his 10 minute set to send to Bookers. Which especially sucks if they had any call backs riffs or were in the middle of a setup.
I found this out at my sisters 1 hour funeral. Set up my camera at the front , great angle when a good 17 mm shot. Got 15 minutes of ushering music and 1 minute of the opening sermon and nothing else lol. Canon 5d mkii
Good info thanks. Do you happen to know if other video recording devices allow the camera to record past its time limit, maybe a video switcher with a recording capability?
Only thing I’m aware of is an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja. But it’s probably be cheaper and easier to use to just get a newer camera that doesn’t have the limits.
With the GX80/GX85 being the same camera but for different geographical regions Panasonic were able to drop the limit on 4k on the GX85 as that was for the US market, whilst the GX80 was for the EU market and had the limit on it. They were also able to seperate the firmware so that you couldn't install the GX85 onto the GX80. This market split also meant that frame rates were limited according to the regions - the GX80 could do 25fps only but the GX85 was 30fps only - despite the fact that frame rate wasn't an issue with the tax.
This is very helpful, thank you. Do you also know why difference cameras can record into longer/larger video files? My Sony FDR-AX33 will record 40GB+ .mp4s, where my DJI Action 3 creates multiple 3.696GB files. It's something I've always accepted, but never thought about why.
Depends on the SD cards you use along with the system’s writing format. A 32GB card and below will automatically format the multiple smaller files. Most new cameras using a 64GB card or higher don’t typically do that.
I’m currently looking for a camera! I’m tired of using my phone, I’m just starting out on UA-cam and so far I’m loving making content! Would anybody recommend this camera for beginners or others? I watched the video, just looking for other options! This video helped clarify what I DID NOT know about this camera too! Thank you!
My stock SONY Alpha 5100 with kit lens, auto saves the file footage ~ 24 -28 mins at room temp. Less at higher temps! That is currently @ firmware-3.1 For your average college coed that's more time than needed to get "it-on", and make memories that last a life time!! Meaning this is not an issue for average Vlogger's since most shoots are continually interupted and need to be edited in-post before uploading to Fakebook, or BoobTube!!!
I've run this issue with my Nikon Z50 camera. My only way around this 30 minute video limit is to insert another sd card or format the current sd card (but then I have to bring my MacBook to every video shoots to back up the video files before formatting the sd card)
@@CamberFilmSchool well I only manage to fill up around 30gb of my 64gb sd card whenever I vlog. but even then, once I reach 30 minutes my camera wouldn't let me start recording even though I still have half a space left in my sd card. I don't know it's weird.
Hey I have a canon T7i and now that I took a video for about 15 minutes I've only got 15 more minutes as shown on thr screen.. If I've stopped recording then the timer should again be showing 29.59 right?
If that’s the most your card can hold then yes. But everything that’s on your card will be erased so be sure to transfer it to a computer first. What size SD card is it?
@@CamberFilmSchool the size is 16GB for now.. It's a new cam.. But your replies did help.. Thank you so much.. I just released a few cinematic shots on my channel.. Surprised to the fact that 18-55mm lens could create such a big impact... Thank you so much man.. Really helped

Hoping you can answer a question for me, I've been told that people use a capture card to use their DSLR as a webcam, I assume this then means unlimited recording otherwise it wouldn't work as a webcam? Can a capture card be used to unlimited recording to a program on a PC, and not as a webcam. I know that Canon has recently brought out some beta software for this purpose but it's not for Australia.
I have a d7200 with a Sandisk pro 170mbs 64GB shooting at 1080p 24p frame rate and it says I have 29m59sec. How do you get so much time on your card.? Please answer soon my daughter's wedding is next month.
That’s because almost all DSLRs have a 30 minute recording limit where the camera automatically stops. You should be able to keep recording by pressing record again after it stops. I would definitely test it out first though and get a larger capacity card if needed.
I have just bought a Nikon D750 and put 2 Sandisk 128gb SD cards into it, after watching your great video i tested the video recording on mine and found it records for 10 minutes before stopping. Can i change that? Ideally i would like to record for a full hour if possible. Thanks
You won't be able to get over the 30 minutes limit without an external recorder, but this video I just released may help you with the reason it's stopping at the 10 minute point: ua-cam.com/video/YGF6cyANhvA/v-deo.html
This artificial limit ruined some of my events that I wanted recorded. It was all volunteer work, so I didn't lose any money on this, right? Wrong. I put down thousands of bucks to record events (basketball games, musical dramas, and Boy Scout events like Pinewood Derby). It's very frustrating to splurge on this equipment only to have a British Import Tax artificially limit my equipment purchased in America. Thank you for providing a way to get around it with an external monitor/recording device. Hopefully that'll help.
Yea, that’s why I always tell folks to test out the equipment before hand to make sure everything is working properly. I know that’s not something you’d expect if you didn’t know about it, but I still always do just to see how long the battery will last during recording.
I have a Canon EOS 4000D. It stops recording after about 12 minutes. This is the first I've heard of built-in recording limits. My online research led me to the conclusion that my SD cards weren't fast enough. I've upgraded the card a couple of times. I'm currently using a ProGrade 128GB, with 250MB/s read and 120MB/S write times. That hasn't helped. Neither does lowering the resolution of the recording. I'm very frustrated over this. I'm pretty tech savvy, but new to DSLRs and not sure how to proceed.
That’s because a lot of entry level DSLRs also have a max GB recording limit that corresponds to around 10-12 minutes when in FHD. Unfortunately Canon keeps plaguing their cameras with these video limits. Sony and Panasonic have done away with them for the past couple years.
I learned this the hard way, after buying a Lumix DC-FZ1000 mark2 - exactly like you described; on its maiden voyage I had to apologise to everyone that it hasn’t recorded, like it was my fault! I’m like wtf, cameras classified as video cameras cost more? The only difference being that video cameras are less capable at taking still images, you’re paying more for less functionality??
Yes it has. I was video recording a Muslim engagement and my Nikon D7100 quit. I caught it and restarted but lost 4 minutes of the speech. In my case I was ok because I had a iPhone 15 pro max shooting 4K mounted on top and it caught the whole 46 minutes speech. Thanks now I know. I will tell others so they don’t make the same mistake.
Lol I relate to the issue of “wtf this stopped recording?” A couple weeks ago I decided to finally put my camera to use and hit up my grandpa to interview him about his experience living through the Cold War. We talked for about 45 minutes and I was like “wait let me just double check to see if it’s still recording” out of my worries for missing the conversation. And yup, I missed out on around 20 minutes of our conversation so I made sure to check it about every ten minutes throughout the rest of our conversation to make sure it was still recording. I still got most of the conversation recorded, but it is slightly disappointing to have found out about this recording cap after the fact. But hey, at least now I know to check the camera, and start new recordings to get all of the future content down that I want to capture. Thanks for the vid!

Thanks for the clarification.
Magic Lantern doesn’t have a record limit. I have recorded 31 minutes one time with my 5D mark III and there was no cut at the 29:59 timestamp. It was all continuous, no 1 sec in between. It stopped at 31:20 only because I ran out of storage.
Good to know! 👍
Very nice, thank you! Still having problems with that, yes, years later!
Yep, it’s a silly limitation.
GOD. BLESS. YOU. You know, if you're into that.
Thanks 👍🏾
Handsome fella ^.^ I’m glad to know that regardless I won’t be faced with the issue of it stopping after 30 mins now that I got your input for MY NEW SONY A6400 that just came in!!!! Wish I could I have seen this video at the time I was using my Canon DSLR camera, it would have helped me pace myself better for my recordings. Keep the content coming!
Pasquale Giovanni, that’s good to hear! Glad that won’t be an issue for you anymore. Let me know how you like that a6400 compared to your Canon.
I think that’s just the max length that the filing system will allow. I have a t2i and it does the same. You’ll just have to push record again.
Yep, I just looked up the manual for the T6 and in the movie shooting section it says that recording stops automatically when the file size reaches 4GB. So that must coincide with the 12 minutes.
Camber Motion great to know, thanks for looking into that for me, I really appreciate it
No problem, Dante 👍🏾 Glad to help!
this has messed up my recording so many times 😭 thanks for talking about it!
Never a good feeling!
I have a canon t3i and it stops recording at only 12 minutes. Is there a setting i can use to make it go up to at least 30 mins?
THis video should help you with that: ua-cam.com/video/YGF6cyANhvA/v-deo.html
Yup found out right while I was in the middle of doing a UA-cam live. - we I had to restart twice. It’s fast but annoying still
Yea, that’s a pain!
I got the nikon coolpix 900 but its stop filming at 7 minutes can i range it
This video should help you with that: ua-cam.com/video/YGF6cyANhvA/v-deo.html
Thanks for the info. I never new about the external device you mentioned. But hacking my t5i sounds like more fun.
for sure!
I am so mad becuse the recording ended when i was recording
Yeah, I know how that feels!
Dude that's a wonderful beautiful setup!
Thx!
Yeah, there are always work arounds to make it work.
intervalometer
👍
Excellent information Sir. I was getting crazy before knowing this 🥴
Thx!
Happend today when recording on my eos r for a YT vid. Feels bad man
That sucks. I know the feeling bro. Always set a 29 minute timer on my watch now when recording my videos.
I had no idea these cameras have recording limits. I just checked, and my Nikon D5100 has a 20-minute recording limit. I was planning to record my performance as part of a choir group and was going to set the camera on the mezzanine stage.
Thank god i kept researching was about to drop another $600 on a diffrent camera which would have had the same limit..
Yep!
Same thing here.
👍
Good info, thanks. Mr. Google told me that the Sony ZV-1 records for 74 min.
Nice! 👍🏽
And A6400 has no recording limit
Nice 👍🏾
Great information! I'm filming an interview soon... so I can record multiple 29min videos, right? I just need to set a timer to end the recording before 30 mins?
Yea. It’ll end automatically at 30 minutes. You just need a timer to make sure you restart it.
Thanks! I was wondering....
No problem! 👍
I’d go with selling it because there really aren’t many good lenses for that camera either without having to use adapters.
it happened to me as well douring an interview. My Lord! It was so embarrassing explaining why I had an issue with my camera.. and till now I didn't know the reason, I thought it was for overheating
Yep, pretty annoying!
Thank you I learned some new things from your video
I have a Nikon DSLR 3100 and it records for 10 minutes.
Yea, that’s a definite downside to using cameras with the limit. That’s why I always recommend people test their gear before using it for productions.
Thank you so much for sharing this info.
You’re welcome!
I found this out at my sisters 1 hour funeral. Set up my camera at the front , great angle when a good 17 mm shot.
Got 15 minutes of ushering music and 1 minute of the opening sermon and nothing else lol.
Canon 5d mkii
Yep, sorry to hear that happened at an important event.
Very helpful. Thanks, Camber.
You’re welcome, Scott! 👍🏾
I haven't moved up to DLSR yet but thanks for the heads up. Hopefully a DLSR is in my future!
Carol Mould, definitely! 👍🏽 Do you have any certain cameras in mind?
Wish I had someone tell me that before mine...
Yep
Great information and thanks for sharing. Very helpful.
You’re welcome!
Great video!! Thanks for sharing!!
You’re welcome, Kerstin Cobb 👍🏽 and thanks!
Dude I have a Atomos ninja and never knew you could record into it lol this whole time I’m getting frustrated with my R50 lol
Nice! 😂 Those memory cards for the atomos are expensive though!
Was losing my mind trying to figure out 30 minute limit on video. Thanks
You’re welcome! 👍
That bites.
Thank you!
About which camera? I wasn’t talking about a specific camera in this video…
The Canon 90D is a pretty good Swiss Army knife camera. 🤔
It is!
@@CamberFilmSchool
I have one along with that 29:59 limit also 😂😂😂
Good video, info.. 🙏 thanks, amfrom #KenyaNairobi #Africa
It happened to me today,
Thanks, Afri! And sorry you had to experience that!
So usefull. JUST what I needed. Thanks Reese! Say hi to Malcolm from me!
👍
Ooooh, i didn't know about those Atomos recorders!!!! gonna do some research now - Thank you !!
Yeah, I don't have one yet, but I'm going to be getting one soon!
Ok 👍🏾
This was super helpful - thank you 🙏🍷
You’re welcome! 👍🏾
I've run this issue with my Nikon Z50 camera. My only way around this 30 minute video limit is to insert another sd card or format the current sd card (but then I have to bring my MacBook to every video shoots to back up the video files before formatting the sd card)
Is your card actually full after 30 minutes? If not then you should be able to just press record again and start recording a second file.
@@CamberFilmSchool well I only manage to fill up around 30gb of my 64gb sd card whenever I vlog. but even then, once I reach 30 minutes my camera wouldn't let me start recording even though I still have half a space left in my sd card. I don't know it's weird.
That’s strange. I’ve never heard of that happening before. Maybe just carry some extra cards then.
Thank you
👍
Hey I have a canon T7i and now that I took a video for about 15 minutes I've only got 15 more minutes as shown on thr screen.. If I've stopped recording then the timer should again be showing 29.59 right?
Well, it also depends on how much space you have left of your SD card.
@@CamberFilmSchool right.. So in that case if I format my memory card I ll again be left with 29.59 limit.. Right?
If that’s the most your card can hold then yes. But everything that’s on your card will be erased so be sure to transfer it to a computer first. What size SD card is it?
@@CamberFilmSchool the size is 16GB for now.. It's a new cam.. But your replies did help.. Thank you so much.. I just released a few cinematic shots on my channel.. Surprised to the fact that 18-55mm lens could create such a big impact... Thank you so much man.. Really helped
Glad to help! 👍
Thanks, for the enlightenment which is very educative to me. In searching for a solution to the problem, with my Canon Rebel t7, I watched a video that recommends the download of SparkoCam software to get around it. I haven't yet, but I want to ask your view about SparkoCam.
I don’t know because I’ve never used it.
@@CamberFilmSchool I use Canon Rebel t7 for streaming a 2-hour church service and we are always experiencing that 30 minute shutting off ugly occurence. I am an amatuer in filming. What would you suggest as best option to help us out please?
Get a Sony a6100.
BULL SHIT!!! NEVER heard of this before. I Just bought a 2nd hand Nikon D5600 fore this very reason. There has to be a workaround for this camera by now. Know of any? Thanks for the video! Explanation without any bla bla bla talking.
God bless!!

Unfortunately no, there isn’t aside from setting a timer on your watch and pushing the record button again (I did it for years).
good job on this video and thank you for the heads up!
No problem, RajivRamanAuthor 👍🏽 Glad to help!
Thank you for making this video!! Seriously! Do you happen to know if the Ninja V works with Canon M50 II? Thanks again
No, I don’t know. But I think you’d be better off getting a different camera rather than paying all that for the ninja.
🤬😱🤯THATS WHY😭 THANKYOU💜👍Im TOTAL newbee to ANY camera so my 250D canon is my 1st😁 for my youtube channel. So setting a timer will be my go to for now🤟 Ninja when Im a mini pro😂
Awesome! 👍
Dude, you look just like Reese from Malcolm in the Middle! And thanks for the info! Just got my Nikon B500, and had this "issue".
😂 You’re welcome! 👍
I hope this help ppl looking for to fix this problem, get an INTERVALOMETER problem solved.
Conect it to ur camera, set the timer and done,, no more worries about seting up againg your cameras
Yea.
I have used a capture card before for streaming, but I've never tested recoding videos with it. I'm not sure if this would work for you.
Thanks for the video. it was great information
You're welcome! 👍

Awesome! 👍
Thank you for this great video

Got it! Thank you!
You’re welcome! 😉
In the middle of my evveeeeent 😭😭😭 thank you so much for this video
Yikes! 😬 That’s the worst way to find out. Glad to clarify for you though. 👍
Cool video! Do you know if I connect my camera to a black magic atem mini will let me to record e without time limit?
I don’t know.
I’m late but cannon cameras have an app that you can restart your recording from the app on your phone
That's good to know!
Wow very informative, thanks!
You’re welcome, Jenny Bellido 👍🏽
Yea, that’s one of the worst ways to find out!
Glad to hear you had a backup!
Dang, that’s a terrible time for it to happen too!
What do I need to record our church service longer the 30min .. I have a Canon 2000d , thankyou
A different camera is probably the cheapest option. Sony a6100 is a good choice.
