How To Change Oil - 2014 Subaru Forester (Back to the Basics Series)

- This video will walk a novice/beginner through how to do a basic oil change. Although this is specifically showing a Subaru forester, the principals can be applied to many other vehicles. This video is the start of a series I plan to do on basic car care and maintenance for the everyday person.

Just a recommendation if you are a novice - just loosen the oil cap all the way and leave in place, do not remove completely during most of the steps just to make sure dirt/tools/crud do not accidentally fall into motor.
Thank you for making this I did my first oil change on my own because of this video.
Thanks for the video. Just changed mine, first time on this car. Bought it used a few months ago. Been a ford guy my whole life, but man is the Subaru fun to drive. And this was the easiest by far oil change I’ve ever done on a vehicle.
NEVER use a wrench to tighten a filter. Just screw it on until it's snug. The gasket crushes enough to it'll never come loose when just hand tight. Not a huge deal in this engine, however DIY"s almost always get them WAAAAY too tight. It's 1/4 turn past where the gasket CONTACTS the surface.
Excellent video, very well down!
Very good teaching skills!
Hurry up with that 68 ford pick up man😂 love classics awesome what y'all did
Thanks for sharing the info :).
I like the Toyota battery. Nice video.
Glad I read your comment, I forgot I need a new battery . . .
1:47 where did you bought that tool to remove oil filter. On the cars that are at my house, the oil filter is located in a different spot instead.
Where is this car? I’m in Michigan on a dirt road and even my engine compartment is totally clean 😂
Probably you are the only one among 2.5L Foresters who shows oil drain plug properly. Rest assume you would know. So thanks for that.
A couple of questions,
- Any reason why you chose not to use Subaru filter?
- Any specific reason you already change the battery?
Do you have plans of changing the differential fluid? Looking forward to that video.
Thanks. I just always get oil and filter when on special at oreileys. I have always used wix filters but they didn't have one so had to go with Fram this time. We bought the car used and that is battery that came with it, not sure why it is not oem. I will be changing all fluids this summer when it gets nicer out. Forester now has 85000 on it so it is getting to be that time.
i read Foz filter spec from Subi are lower than other 3rd party oil filters. So I just use Subi filters. Also, look into Mityvac 7400. I use that pump to suck out oil from top side... no need to mess with the drain plug at all.
For some inexplicable reason the drain plug is not at the lowest point of the sump. I jacked up the car on on the right to drain a little more oil.
after you remove the drain plug and the old oil drains, can you pour some clean oil through to remove any excess dirty oil that may remain? thanks.
You may get some extra dirty oil out but it is not really worth spending the money to waste clean oil. I have several vehicles all with 200k or more and never any engine issues from dirty oil. All changed every 5k miles.
Reuse the crush gasket? How do you plan to uncrush it so it seals the second time when you crush it?
Some will flip it once. Manufacturer will recommend new crush gasket every time. Most quick change places will cut corners and throw the gasket away and put the drain bolt in without the gasket. You only discover this once you do your own changes.
How often do you change your Forester's oil? I took mine in for an oil last year and they said 10,000 miles (on synthetic). I figured they knew what they were talking about, but I've read much lower elsewhere.
+Mark M I think subaru specs 7500 miles but I do every 5000 on all of my vehicles with full synthetic.
Thanks, I thought 10,000 was pretty high. Going to change my asap.
+Mark M I'm not saying 5000 is right that's just my preference.
Gotcha!
Where do you dispose of the used oil?
Local auto store or someone who has an oil burner
Would have been nice to include the size socket that you need
17mm
The Forester 2.5 liter engine requires an oil filter with a higher by-pass valve pressure than is offered in the Fram filters. Subaru requires a back pressure of 24-30 psi. I hope you will note this before your next oil change. Using a filter not properly designed for your vehicle will shorten the life of the engine.
Good to note, do you know what all aftermarket brands meet this spec?
@@C2H6Garage Not sure of all after market brands that meet this requirement. I only use Subaru Brand, because I know for a fact they meet the requirement. The Subaru Brand filters are not expensive at all, I buy mine by the case. They average about $6.00 per filter. This is a very good price for OEM.
@@rockbay79 Do you have to buy the OEM filters from the dealer?
@@resq35 Yes. How ironic, I just returned home about 3 hours ago from the Little Rock Arkansas Subaru Dealership getting the oil and filter replaced on my Wife's 2018 Subaru Forester. Since I just turned 60, it is more difficult than in my youth to perform maintenance on my own vehicles. Now, I let the dealership perform most all maintenance. I had to take her Forester in for a Recall pertaining to the AC Condenser. It was replaced and I had them change the oil and filter. It was a bit shy of 3000 miles, but I am a firm believer in running clean motor oil. Personally, I use only Synthetic motor oil.
You can also by OEM oil filters from Auto zone they run about $10.99
My 2015 Forester ran out of oil! The light came on, but the oil was already below the lowest level of the dip stick!
Is oil consumption normal? We have no burning smell, smoke, etc.
Yes on any style engine slight oil consumption is normal. Due the boxer design of this engine, that oil consumption is increased. How long are your oil change intervals? I usually stick to 5k on mine and check every 1000 miles just to make sure on level.
Subarus are notorious for oil loss and head gasket failures. Every year they swear the problems been fixed. And yes I've owned a number of subarus
Joe Johnson - my 2003 went thru over a quart a month. My 2014 is a lot better.
There was a lawsuit about this. Check with your dealer about doing an oil consumption test. Long story short, there was a design defect with the piston rings. They were designed for less friction/better mileage, which was expected to result in more oil burning. However, it went way too far - we were adding a quart every 1000 miles or so. Our 2014 failed the test after we bought it with about 95,000 miles, and they replaced the short block under warranty.
U just ruined the oil change by using a fram oil filter sham on u
My 2015 forester never needs an oil change, never. If you think about having to add a quart of oil every 900 miles of highway driving so by the time I have to change the oil it has been completely changed. Just change the filter and i'm good. Subaru should use this as a selling point. All kidding aside it truly is an excellent vehicle that outshines most trucks in the snow but the whole oil consumption thing bugs the shit out of me.
Either you have a major oil leak or the engine is burning oil which it shouldn't. That motor may be still under warranty. Might want to have Subaru check it out.
I use the same filter-only oil change with my Pilot too. It drinks a quart per month. It has 240k miles on it, but the oil use is cheaper than buying something new. Takes 5-10 minutes to change the filter twice yearly.
what a mess
