Heads up: the 2019's may have a little cover with push-clips one can pry out with a flathead screwdriver. The cover may be labelled "Engine Oil"

Pretty sure the manual specifies OW-20 oil so I think you might be using the wrong oil

This video advises you to use a 14 mm wrench to remove the drain plug on the 2015 Forester. This is incorrect; instead you must use a 17 mm socket OR Closed wrench. Do not use anything else such as an open wrench or channel locks because by dong so you might damage and strip the drain plug, making it much more difficult to remove.

I don't tighten the filter too much, and they come off with just by hand.

Weird, I got a Haynes book for my Forester and it suggests 0w-30 for my non turbo 2.5x AWD.

“””Attention””” Please be careful that do don’t accidentally empty the cvt fluid in stead. On a 2018 forester the oil plug is under a plastic cover. I may have ruined my transmission.

1A auto I am not in anyway suggesting that my mistake is your fault. But please consider adding a warning message at the beginning of this video for people to be careful not to drain the wrong fluid. The the transmission plug is a 14 mm plug on the under side of the car just behind the actual oil plug that is hidden under plastic. I’ve never experienced a set up like this, maybe I’m just used to older cars. I drained the cvt fluid by accident thinking I was draining engine oil then preceded to fill the oil 5.5qt ran the car for 20sec the. Checked level to find that it was way too full. So I got back under and drained a bit more fluid started the car for a few seconds and checked again. Still too full. Long story short. I realized my mistake and am now having my car towed to the dealership to service. They said it would be a Minimum of $400 unless I screwed up my transmission in which case it’ll be closer to 10,000

The standard Forester and the Forester XT take different types and volumes of oil. You probably have an XT in the video.

The oil capacity is 4.8 litres not 6 quarts.

I don't have lift for my vehicle. How else could I raise the vehicle off the ground to drain the oil?

  • @jams1533

Curious why he only let it run for 20 seconds. The oil doesn’t have time to warm up and expand. That didn’t make sense to me. I felt like he added too much oil at that point
