    Not necessary to remove that Philips screw. It enables that panel to swivel and pivot away from the opening.

    Good Job Kim! At least we now know how to drain both the engine oil and trans oil. After changing the engine oil 3 times on my 2019 Forrester, I will mention the oil drain plug is made of soft metal and it's very easy to round the hex nut if your socket is not aligned perfectly . You made no mention of the crush washer which should be replaced with each oil change. The oil plug should be tightened to 30 foot pounds.

      Yes, you are correct about changing the crush washer each time. These can be bought, very cheap at any parts store, just let them know make, model and year.

    I would leave the panel off and check the seal after refilling. I typically put in 1 qt and then check for leaks. As mentioned pull the filter to ensure all old oil out before re-plugging.

    Thanks for posting the video, especially since it is my first oil change on my 2020 forester, used to 2011 outback, looking for a drain plug, the only one i see is ( now we know) is on the transmission, at this point went to you tube and found your video, and your comment about removing the T-mission plug , really hit home.
    Now was looking for the access panel for the engine plug, and thanks to you got the idea.
    you saved the day!

    I'm no mechanic, but I'd leave the filler cap on until I loosened the drain plug, so the oil doesn't come out too fast and splash. Then loosen the filler and the oil filter, and leave off the access panel until I knew the drain plug was not leaking, but a nice vid and we'll explained. Does the drain plug need a new crush washer each time?

    This is great video and kudos for mentioning the mistake.
    The only thing I would reconsider is the Filter.
    the WIX 57055XP which is 1 of 2 branded filters which can take the 23psi oil pressure you need for the oil filter.
    The oil drain plug should be torqued. For yours I think it's to 30lbs. For older I thinks it's 22lbs.
    The numbers seam high because the removal is about double, but it's for liability reasons.
    Always remember to replace the drain plug washer.
    Great video and very clear instructions.

      @@kimrobinson9855 I actually didn't know that, so I switched it I'm doing my first oil change on my forester sport. At first I was going to use amsoil or penzoil ultra platinum..then I read these two articles..Now I'm convinced I'm going with IDEMITSU ZEPRO 0W-20 Synthetic Oil which I believe is the OEM oil..

    I like the slightly different oil drain plug access panel compared to my 2018...it seems like the opening under the panel is slightly wider on your's or maybe it's my imagination. I will say the push pins on your's are definitely better than the Philips head screw slot ones on mine which have all stripped out requiring me to just leave the panel off. I may need to pick up some o those push-type ones. Thanks for the video.

What I’m wondering now is what do I need to do, I. Would appreciate any advice you can give me.

    I wish I'd watched this video before I tried changing mine the first time. Cost me about the same to have the dealer refill my transmission fluid. Thanks for the great video and the good camera work, which other videos aren't as great with.
    Question, why not take off the old oil filter when you are draining the oil? I don't like any of the old oil from the filter to be left in the system because it's the worst part of it. Could just be me being over cautious.

Too many years of me changing oil on v8 rear wheel drive configuration would have cost me 200$ if not for your tutorial. Thanks again!

    Nice video! Thank you. I wonder if removing the old filter prior to draining the oil will help to get all of the old oil out along with helping with the flow? Not sure how much old oil may still be trapped in the lines when the filter is snug on the engine block...

    • @kimrobinson9855
      @kimrobinson9855  4 роки тому +1

      My experience is that as long as the oil is a bit warm draining the oil first then the filter works just fine. Remember to take filler cap off first before draining.

    i dont know anything about cars, but how did you know after you opened it, it was transmission fluid and not oil change. Is there a difference in color or smell? thank you for the video. The first oil change is free from my dealership i might try to do the second on myself.

      The transmission fluid was green. I knew almost immediately that I had made a mistake. I thought for a moment to try and stick the drain plug back in, but I didn't. Lesson learned. The engine oil will be a dark brown or black.

    Do 2019 Foresters have a warning light in then dash that tells you when it's time to change the oil? If so, and you have changed the oil, does this have to me reset? if so, how is that done? Thanks.

    • @kimrobinson9855
      @kimrobinson9855  3 роки тому

      I changed the oil earlier than required per the manufacturer. I saw that there are several great UA-cam vids on how to reset warning lights. So, instead of writing a lengthy response I would recommend searching on UA-cam "how to reset alert lights on 2019 Subaru" hope that helps.

    I think before you put back the plastic cover, don’t you think fill the right amount of oil first then run the car for few minutes. After that then check for leaks on the drain plug. If every thing is okay, then that’s the time you put back the cover on.

    • @kimrobinson9855

      It is always a good idea to run the car afterwards, immediately check for leaks, if all good then let run for a few minutes and check oil level. Great point!

    ATG says it's a bad designs for car owners:
    1. Take it to normal oil change stores and your be missing to plastic covers
    2. Do it yourself, after 9 oil changes those plastic clips will break
    3. If you men have big hands some models, oil filter is on the bottom, opening is too small.
    Oil will spill all over hand. But if you got this model the oil filter is on the top
    FIY:
    Better pray that your beloved car won't get orange peels after 6 years & transmission works.
    Oil Pump's gasket is still good.
    Rear Engine Seal is still good

    • @kimrobinson9855

    • @kimrobinson9855
      @kimrobinson9855  3 роки тому

      I examined the washer and mine was ok. I keep spares handy in case the washer is fully crushed or deformed. Some people change the washer each time, depends on the type of washer.

    Recommend a New crush washer when putting the 14mm bolt back on the oil pan.
    Torque for drain plug is 30 ft lbs, 14mm socket.
    Starting the car after oil change can cause some engine wear until oil pressure builds up and the oil filter is filled.
    Instead of starting the car with no oil in the filter, hold the accelerator down all the way, crank for 30 second intervals until the oil pressure light is off.
    That preloads the system with oil, then start the car.

    Aftermarket oil filters for Subaru's are a big NO NO, They don't have the proper bypass pressure specs. If any engine failure happens for oil related reasons they will blame the filter.
