I do all my oil changes and other work on my vehicles, I do not have much faith in others to do it. I like the sense of accomplishment and it is like therapy for me..
Hello Marion, Finally, i decided to change the oil and filter on my wife's 2012 forester😒so, i went to UA-cam to get tips ... second video I clicked here's Marion working on forester how exciting😀😀 Thank you and God bless.
Excellent videos! Keep making ones for your Forester. Couple ideas for future videos: cleaning the MAF sensor, changing the PCV, transmission fluid/front deferential change. Keep up the great work!
Excellent "old school" oil change tutorial ! I especially liked your comment: "...kinda fun, actually..." when you were wrapping up the job. I also couldn't help but notice, Marion, that your hands in the video looked similar to mine - I'm closer to 70 than 65 years old, which precipitates my comments to you. And like yourself, I prefer to do as much of the work on our vehicles as I feel confident: for me, oil changes are no brainer's. While surfing the Net awhile back I came across this video on UA-cam: Subaru Forester HOW TO: Engine Oil Change - 2.5L 4cyl (2013-2018 - also Outback / Impreza / Legacy). The author of this article used a Mityvac fluid evacuator to change the oil in his Subaru without crawling underneath the vehicle; that struck a cord with me. So, some months later when one of these gizmos popped up on Craigslist ( open, NIB for $50 ) I picked it up. As you noted the oil filter on the Boxer engine is topside and is a snap to service. So now when I change the oil in my wife's '15 Forester, no more ramps, crawling underneath the car, busting my knuckles and dirty oil running down my forearm, dragging an oil catch pan in and out from under the car, emptying that damn thing into a jug, drips/spills on the driveway, torquing and praying not to strip the threads on the drain plug - you get the picture. Just yesterday when I finished an oil change I thought to myself that it was, too, "kinda fun". I've also used the Mityvac to change the oil, power steering fluid and ATF in my old Highlander; this thing has paid for itself many times over in convenience, alone ! The reason behind this long winded piece was to share with another Ol' Timer my experience with working "smarter, not harder" 8^)
I'm not sure all the old oil will drain out with it up on ramps like that. Noticing you're driveway's slope, you'd probably be better off having the ramps at the bottom of the driveway, and facing the other way. I also let the car run for about 5-10 minutes to warm up the oil so it drains better. Thanks for mentioning the torque of the drain plug though. I'd have also been curious how much oil went into it to get an accurate fill level.
Thanks, I'm thinking the slop is actually aiding me but I'll be looking at it in a few days. I'm thinking about switching from 0-20 to 5 w 30. I had my oil light come on a while back while hauling but down I10 to Houston. I stopped and checked it and it was 1/2 quart low??.
@@MarionBlair yikes, that may be bad. My 2014 Forester had a sort of recall (Manufacturer Extended Warranty) for engines burning excessive amounts of oil. Subaru dealership performed the test on mine and ended up replacing my engine. Now I go 5k miles and never see the oil light.
@@JefeDog Yes, I've never went against the manual but I'm scared now. Never lost oil pressure before. It was summer on I10 and we were running 80 mph. Looks like it's burning 1/2 quart in 5k now.
@@MarionBlair Most other videos I've seen on 2014 subaru forester oil changes calls for 5.1 quarts of oil or just a little more , but i had the same thing happen to me when I had a 2011 subaru legacy heading North on 77 from Florida doing around 80 mph , had to make a quick pit stop and add a quart. Thanks for this great video .
You were probably a few hundred miles off of the maintenance alert triggering - I would’ve liked to see the reset procedure at the end of the oil change.
Yea, I got rid of mine for that reason. Oil light came on while on the interstate 10 to Houston. Pulled into an Exxon. Check oil and it was only 1/2 quart low yet the pump was sucking air. Something wrong with those engines.

Ramguykev yes same here
That was extremely calming...I can't wait to change the oil on my subaru
thank you for the great information, it was like changing oil with my grandfather who has a wise and patient voice and demeanor
Thanks for the video, i do the oil change on my mom’s Forester, I go back to your video to make sure I’m getting done right 🙏🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Great job as always!

Thanks very much for those comments. I'll have to look into that mityvac. I'm a simpleton, the simpler the better, ha. thanks.
Thank you SO MUCH! 💝
Good info, thanks!
Good karma doing maintenance on your own vehicle plus you know what’s been done right! I love torque settings
This is a very clear and concise video.
Thanks!
how awesome!, is that he can do it his self older wise man that not afraid of DIY
Yes, it was worth saving the $40, and 40 the likes on UA-cam!
I don’t worry about that .1 quart either. What’s less than 4oz going to do?
nicely done! i don't have ramps, can i drive the front tire up a curb and proceed? or should i just keep it on the ground?
You can
Where do I buy a new crush ring? Directly from subaru or any hardware store?
Subaru, about a dollar.
Here in NH
They charge 150
I do it myself for 35

@@reinaldodejesus4153 yeah there's something wrong with this engine on that Subaru I've had issues with this car since I bought it
Hello Marion,
I wonder if the Ramps that you are using are Rhino Ramps 1200lb.
Thank you sir.
They are Rhino but 4000 each or 8000 per pair.
I ordered Rhino ramps1200 LB.
I wonder if i could used it for Ram 1500 EcoDiesel.
I will take your answer from the air.
Good bless!🙂
@@AD-zy5gr I bet they are 12,000 GVW so 6000 for the two. The eco diesel is less than 6000 for the entire truck the ones you ordered will work fine.
Thank you sir. I appreciate that.

Its a whole song and dance to reset that oil change alert.
my 2012 subaru impreza burns so much oil I don't need to do oil changes

I changed my oil early. How do you reset the oil life reset

Subaru,s do not like Mobil oil I was told my the dealer
This didn't, it started burning oil. Defective engines on this model. Wasn't the oil however.
