I think it would look really cool to panel a door to the bathroom and have it blend in with the wall so you don't notice there is a door there. A secret passage to the bathroom how awesome would that be!

The old office would make an amazing library with real wood bookcases floor to ceiling with just a couple of comfy chairs and a light to read in. An antique library table would be an added touch.

Or perhaps small cabinets or drawers on the window side. Don't forget Macenna if you give prior built ins away. Really like secret passage door to bathroom, maybe with shelves to office side that open to the bathroom

I lived in mid century house designed by Enrico Taglietti - with all the original built ins, including an entire office.I loved the long, low lines. Directly above the desk which spanned an entire wall, he designed a built in lightbox, with soft downlights illuminating your work. The top of the box served as a shelf for books. It was such a productive space!

It looks beautiful, Drew! The next time you install tongue and groove wood products, use a little piece of off-cut to lock in to the piece you want to hammer, and hammer that instead so that you don't dent the wood edge or break the tongue! I think two shelves would look great over the desk, and I would consider some shallow drawers under that little shelf under the window!

Hot tip for you Drew- you can get high-end fine tooth “finish cut” blades for your jigsaw that leave a smooth finish without all the splintery rough edges. I avoided my jigsaw for years because I hated dealing with the roughness of the cut and all the sanding required… but now I use it all the time!

I love the idea of making the bathroom door blend in with the wood, and making it a secret door that leads to the bathroom! Even having small shelves to make it look like a bookcase. I love the idea of covering the ceiling with the oak, as well. It instantly would become a true nook, and so cozy, pulling you in to work on your laptop. You make design so much fun, and inspiring!

I’m loving this. On the window side where you are considering adding an extra shelf I think that you should consider making custom drawers to fit underneath the shelf. You mentioned that you don’t have any drawers in your room. The drawers would work for your socks and underwear as well as for office supplies.

To avoid damaging the tongue and groove boarding, you may want to consider using a rubber mallet. Alternatively, use a scrap piece of the tongue and groove (placed against the board you're attaching) and hit the scrap piece with the hammer or mallet instead.

The closet office is turning out beautifully well! Given the height of the ceiling, I would go with two shelves above the desk. For the door to the bathroom, what about a set of tiny french doors that open into the bathroom? Keeping it maybe a frosted glass to allow light to flow through the two areas.
For the old office space, I think that room would look wonderful as a reading area. Think a little bit of a gentlemen's lounge mixed with some dark academia.

@lonefox Drew!!! Please please take my advice, above the desk, install two of the 4” can lights, or smaller. Just two small lights. With a small space and all that warm wood, you will thank me! Plus it will light up your desk and the space beautifully without taking up any room.
If you can swing it, I would do one more over the center of the built-in on the other wall.

  • @JL11775

Loving this idea of an Office nook. Sometimes the pressure of feeling you have to work in a dedicated office can be unappealing so I don’t blame you for making this change. Re shelving, I would put the shelf for books behind the chair below that built-in and then one shelf over the desk with a beautiful piece of artwork above it. And btw you really should be hammering those wood planks with a rubber mallet. I was cringing when you used a regular hammer for fear you’d damage the wood. Whatever decisions you make I’m sure this nook will look gorgeous! Have a great week! 😊

    • @carlabarrick8538

Yes regarding hammer!! We have a big orange rubber dead-blow mallet filled with sand so it doesn’t rebound AT ALL. It’s probably my favorite tool, I loooove my dead low mallet. Drew would be happy to add that to his arsenal!

My dad was a carpenter and I also cringed through the entire video as Drew hit the desk base on the side to drive it in and all of the wall wood. Definitely get yourself a great rubber mallet. Make sure it is a weight and heft that is comfortable for you to use over periods of time. I think shelves behind you for your reference material and shelves above you that hold items that inspire you.

      Interesting commentary }
But Honestly "Drew You know Your quirks Better than Anyone else. " Thus I'd say follow your instincts, as they haven't stirred You Wrong Yet ! Now, as for the Old Office , Do Remember as Your Businesses are Growing and Life progresses in spurts, Having a Professional Office Space for Official Business Meetings, is Also a Great 👍 Look of A Successful Businessman and Maybe 🤔 that's Exactly 💯 % What that Area of the House Will Be Moving into "in the Near Future" ; As "You've Diffinately Been Creating Your "Dream Spaces"... although many opinions are workable & very feasible in their minds is it in Yours ?? You Honestly Don't want to take any business meetings in Your Bedroom 😮= Right ?😂 So Not Professional 😢
So moving forward, Please just update your Original Office until you find that color vibe You're grooving towards and that might mean a slight paint color change Knowing You 😂 (Now Deeper shades of the Dark Green Are colors that vibrate Money>>> Bringing Money 🤑 💰 is Still the Vibration Needed >Maybe it's the hue used or the energy of the placements of the Office Furniture that needs Revamping or maybe you Need a little feeling of wealth in That exact room or a luxer richer vibrational vibe in their....Relook, Reimagine ; than redo til it's Feeling Nothing but Successfulness whenever You See 🙈 into that Space but also think energy flow don't block the entrance into but make it feel that vibration of welcoming in success (maybe it's a wallpaper, or A luxe feeling powerful chair or a mural behind the desk but something is blocking your Flow rather than inviting it into that space ... .Since You've Not 🚫 yet Used it >> maybe it's again a color vibrational Thing< but since it's off your meet and greeting / entrance & entertainment area do reconsider>...As Magazine editors, & professional meetings still need professional spaces to Meet in...just be patient A Little Longer with Yourself and see yourself as the client ..Your instincts are Usually Great 👍 Ask Yourself>
Please and Tell Her I Said "Hello" & Happy New Year OH ,by the way" Your bedroom is the Cutest but it's hilarious You've put your desk in that space next to the Bathroom 😮 Now You Should make that Door a Secret Bookcase Entrance to Your Secret Bathroom as You Don't want to be flushing Your Money Down the toilet 🚽🪠,so a Bookcase Door division would help prevent that Also it's like having a private secret bathroom moment or Narnia Moment 😮..😂

Maybe you could make a hidden door that gives the illusion of a solid wall adjoining the bathroom. Remove the molding, replace with a flat door that swings into the bathroom and runs flush with the wall when closed. Panel across both the wall and door, piecing the door front so it matches. Add a minimal, discrete knob.

I think two custom curtains to hide the door or pull apart and secure with some cast iron decorative pieces or beautiful ropes with big tassels would be warm and romantic for the bedroom but functional and professional when pulled apart when you are in the office mode.

Definitely shelves above the desk and also on the other side. You can never have enough storage space. The old office would make a great reading/library space. Make it cozy and warm, to snuggle up with a good book and have some coffee or tea. Although you said, you don't read much. Could also be a project/craft room.

Two shelves, you have the space for them.
There are spaces in our home where we can work instinctively and other places where it is impossible, probably a matter of good vibes. I am working in the middle of my living room, more exactly my living room became my office and I receive people in my office 😂 I have plenty of space to do my office anywhere else in my home but the living room is the only place where I feel good to work… So I totally get what you are saying.

I think you should put a shelf up on the opposite side of the desk for sure. That is a great idea. I don't know if you are able to make cabinet doors for that area. but I would like to see it enclosed. So it looks more like a built in cabinet piece. And Then I think one shelf above the desk up high enough so that you could hang a painting under it.

I like the ideas of the shelves above the desk, but i wouldn't make them stick out very much. Maybe just enough to put books on. I think it could start looking cluttered.
Putting small drawers under the window area would help w the smaller items like ur stapler, tape, pens etc...
    It looks great.

  • @cmitchell7347
    @cmitchell7347 11 місяців тому +1

On the window wall, agree with adding the lower shelf but would add doors. Granted, few will see the area but you may grow tired of seeing all the 'stuff' if the shelf becomes a catchall..and sometimes there are supplies that just need to be tucked away. More calming, emotionally, to reduce visual 'clutter.'
As another posted, great idea for the 'hidden bathroom' door. There is hardware for secret openings which don't require a knob on the outside. Hang some artwork on the door to further give the illusion of a solid wall..

Apothecary! Please please please do an apothecary built in under the shallow wall drawers. You can hold all sorts of papers and doodads for current projects and inspiration. This way you can keep all potential clutter on that side of the closet area and keep your desk space clear to comfortably spread out what you are working on. Plus, you could have it be made of wood as well to continue the paneled wood stain color to match and blend in. Other adjustable shelves above that and above that desk is a good idea too, kind of like a mini library.

I totally agree about having a desk within a room other than an office. I don't know why, but I just wasn't motivated to go in there. With my sit stand desk and a lovely wicker screen with a tall bookcase on the living room side, there are no cords to be seen. Funny, because I had dreamed of an office for so many years. My cat never wanted to hang with me in there. He knew. 😂

Isn't it strange how we gravitate to such different things? Yet, it makes us all so unique. For myself I would need lots of natural light, a view and no paneling. I've had these conversations with fellow writers as we talk about our writing spaces. Some need to sit in cafes, have big glam offices, work in the bedroom, a laptop desk on the sofa, the kitchen etc. I can't handle paneling or lots of wood. I'm originally from Scotland but we moved to VT when I was a child. I'm over the cabin stuff 😂 Yet, whatever allows us to be productive is the perfect spot for us. This little space is what brings you to your sweet creative spot Drew and it's perfect for you. I love your vision and how you bring joy to all your designs. I have been back in Europe the past five years and upon returning to the states later this year I am going to miss the fantastic (much cheaper) prices for all my vintage and antique finds. I will need to decorate after my move and will definitely be incorporating some of your ideas. I look forward to your next video and all that you create in your new office.

It’s coming together really well! A natural wooden bead curtain would lightly separate the bathroom from the nook, without making it feel claustrophobic, yet adding a bit of visual privacy to the bathroom. There are some fabulous Spanish ones available that would go well with the style and era.

Drew, I think the space across from your desk would look so good with a smaller version (you would probably need to make it) of a barristers cabinet. You know the cabinets where the front panels are glass framed in wood and the pull up and slide back into the cabinet. I hope that makes sense. The other idea I have is to buy or make custom file cabinets which you can also find in wood to match everything else. I am not a fan of putting the wood on your ceiling it would be far too heavy for such a small space. How about doing a painted mural there? As far as the doors go for privacy when you work consider French doors one small set on each door or just one door on either side. Just a few thoughts. BUT you do what makes you happy in your home! Love your channel ❤

Someday maybe i will be able to afford a designer.

The office nook is a great idea. Yes, do put a shelf below the previously built in area and I'd go for two shelves on the desk wall. I'd also paint the ceiling rather than doing wood paneling avoiding a living in a box feel. My favorite part - seeing green grass and the trees. A nice change from snow.

I think two smaller shelves over the desk pulled to one side and beside the shelves on the blank wall space a pretty piece of art work. On the opposite side of the desk I’d use the same wood you used for the walls and make cabinet doors and enclose that area in. I really don’t care for open storage spaces. It looks cluttered and chaotic to me . The space in my mind should be plain and simple. Less is more. Im sure whatever you do will look wonderful
PS about wood on the ceiling. I’d color match the wood walls. Wouldn’t go to the extreme of paneling the ceiling. Put your efforts into something that will be note worthy.
Have fun , love watching your videos

Hi Drew. My suggestion is for you to add a shallow shelf about 8” above your desk top to be addition work surface so you have a maximized area on your desk to use. the shelf can be where your large flat screen monitor sits on then your laptop or keyboard on your desk below. The shallow shelf can be a place for tape measure, a pen holder, a lamp…. and then you can add 2 more deeper shelves higher up for books and decor. I also think your chair needs to be armless so it can tuck in for aisle space.

Love the wood walls and desk. I did a closet into an office once and put shelves on the side walls and the back wall. It was great for books, fabric containers, and decor accessories. It did have that library office feel. I also put in underlighting on the shelves that helped with the shadowing you get with the window behind you. Just a suggestion.

Suggest that you make the bathroom door a frosted glass OR leaded glass & stained glass in diamond pattern. It would be gorgeous… mysterious, and cozy at the same time. It would look like a library cubby at Oxford or Cambridge. Also a door with a very thin Alabaster panel would glow if bathroom is lit which would look like the Law Library at U of M (ichigan).

❤❤ In my children's bedrooms I did the same thing.
Each of the rooms had 2 closets.
So one closet became their office (study section with shelves for books etc).
Added wallpaper and scones for more light.
Took doors out of this closet so it could be very accessible for them. Saved the doors.
The other closet, I moved their dresser inside the closet so they can still use it.
Above the dresser was their hanging cloths. So, everything to wear was in one closet. Kept the doors on this particular closet to be closed when not in use.
The rooms were clear of clutter.
    Love all your ideas❤🙏

Underneath that little shelf-thing opposite the desk, maybe install a cabinet instead of shelving. That way you could hide unsightly, occasional-use tech when you're not using it. On the other side, consider a large piece of framed art over the desk, and 2 small shelves on the wall beside the bathroom doorway, with an eye-catching arrangement that will lift your mood as you exit the bedroom. Paneling looks great, by the way!
