@@RonHenry He Ron I know we have talked before, but do you have a video on your procedure to prep the yard for over seeding??? Like we talked about I'm gonna over seed my Common Bermuda sod with Arden 15. Buy want to know how you prepped your yard before you spread the seed. Thanks in advance. Great video 👍🏾👍🏾
Glad you find it useful Jesse. I figure if I document a lot of what I'm seeing and doing with the lawn, it'll help speed up someone else's lawn journey. Let me know if I can help with anything.
Nice Don! I literally just released a video on planing Arden 15 that you might find useful. ua-cam.com/video/vj0SLSpiRp0/v-deo.html Let me know if I can help with anything else.
I’ll definitely work on it. I might have to add it in worth another video. I’m try to think of how to demonstrate how soft grass is over video. Hmm... 🤔
This comment made my morning.😎What kind of grass are you working with in TN? Depending on how far along your lawn is, check out my guide for a golf course lawn. I'm planning on updating it here soon but it should answer a lot of questions to help get the most out of a Bermuda grass lawn. ua-cam.com/video/t7phQgmQwIc/v-deo.html Thanks again for subscribing!
Ron, you are amazing! Thank you for sharing all of your amazing steps to keep your lawn so amazing. I am about to over seed my front yard with Arden 15 where I currently have ugly common Bermuda and a large patch of Zoyzia that was planted before I bought the house. Anyway, my point here is how often to do water the over seed? I know that the seed must stay moist. I'm in Tucker, Ga so our weather patterns are the same.
As far as watering, I'd aim for 3 days per week assuming we don't get any rain. It's not very hot yet, so a light watering to keep the ground moist should be all that's needed. Are you planning to kill off the Zoysia before over seeding or hoping that the Arden 15 chokes it out over time? It definitely sounds like an interesting project. Tucker isn't too far away from me. Probably 40 minutes or so. Thanks for the kind words sir. Really glad you're getting some value out of the content.🤓
Yukon Bermuda. I live in zone 7 also. Had slightly better cold hardiness and drought tolerance than princess77. I wanted P77 for the fine leaf texture though. Spring greenup and winter dormancy starts when soil temps hit 55-60. With mild springs, and falls I wanted something to be green for longer to help with weed pressure. I have a green lawn April-November.
You’re much further north than I am so I can see how Yukon would perform much better than Princess 77. Arden 15 is supposed to perform better in cold weather than P77. It wasn’t really a think when you went to Yukon though. I’m really excited to see how this seed does later this year once the weather gets cold again. How tall are you mowing your Yukon?
@@RonHenry hahaha, no biggie I thought maybe I was wrong and you were not in the Atlanta area. Anyway back to Yukon, I almost miss the smaller leaf blade texture but I love adding at least 2 months to my lawn season. If I did it again I would do Monaco Bermuda though so I would get my smaller leaf texture too.
Looking good Ron! I hear you on the temps, I am having to postpone my sanding project due to the colder temps. Hopefully I will be able to get to it soon
Right on. It looks like hot weather from here on out. Last time I said that, we got weather in the 40s so I'd better shush it. :-). You're doing a full top dress this year?
Thanks Richard. I imagine in a couple of weeks temps should be high enough that overseeding will work well. Assuming the weather doesn’t go crazy, you should be good to go in early June. Once temps get warmer, are you considering overseeding?
I threw some princess 77 down a few years ago in the fall. Really didn’t do anything besides fertilize a few times a year and it took off in the sun. For the shade I put zoysia, it’s probably going to take of the Bermuda eventually.
I'm really enjoying these videos. Overseeding Bermuda seems to be a controversial subject. The cost and potential of it not taking well has kept me from doing it. I might have to rethink that though. I just bought a new house about 8 months ago and am working on getting this yard up to par. Patience is tough when you're used to having the #1 lawn in the neighborhood 😎😂
I totally get it Zman. Before I first overseeded, I saw the videos and read pages saying why overseeding is a terrible idea. I do believe that could be true if you're mixing major grass types. For example if you decided to overseed your Bermuda lawn with Rye in the winter, I could see how that could produce a suboptimal result. In my case I'm overseeding with the same major grass type: Bermuda. It's just an improved version of what I already have. I think my results show that it can work well, if you apply the seed properly. Just think of how much you're doing to dominate once you're rocking that "Super Bermuda" in your lawn. 😎 Thanks for your support.
Thanks. I was looking to overseed my common bermuda here in Texas and looked into a few types but I still have not decided. I like to cut my grass at 2" or so and Arden 15 and Princess 77 recommends a max of 1". I saw a few videos from GCI Turf on his bermuda blend that I might try out being that it has Blackjack and Riviera seed. You are right about the expense of premium grass seed.
I heard really good things about the Blackjack Bermuda blend J Harris. I'm not sure how it would look at 2" since most Bermuda cultivars really like being cut at 1.5" or lower. Blackjack might be different though.
@@RonHenry You're right. But 100+ degree weather and little rain in Texas during July and August might not be good for the lower cuts. I'm sure I could make the lower cuts work but my wife pays the water bill. lol #keepthepeace
I sowed a full Bermuda lawn last year. Nuked it and put out seed. Came out great. It was a trio seed blend from Ewing irrigation. That’s when I’d use seed and overseed with it again. I also did it at my house with Princess 77 and you can see a difference between the Princess 77 and the original to the house 20 yr old Bermuda. I should’ve taken plugs from one area and transplanted them, because from afar you can’t tell, but up close, you can see the difference in textures. If you’re cutting taller, you wouldn’t notice as much. Cutting lower it is much more noticeable in their height and growth habits. I see the purpose, but now also know that it will spread and fill in on its own and cultural practices, not overseeding, will help with that. Just my opinion, bud. You can still tell that your yard clearly dominates your neighbor and there’s no denying that. Not everyone is going to come up and examine your lawn with a magnifying class and say, “that’s not Tifway 419, that looks different”. So, I say, if you need to, and are not the most patient person, do it.
Great comment Andrew. If you look at my video on Princess 77 and Tifway 419 from fall 2 years ago, (ua-cam.com/video/HqmOnQ2mwOk/v-deo.html) I show the difference in color between the 2. I'd just overseeded and the Princess 77 had not spread and filled out across the lawn as yet. Last year and this year, it looks worlds better now that the seeded Bermuda has had an entire season to do spread. Tifway 419 and Princess 77 / Arden 15 seem to have pretty good compatibility. Overseeding with Arden 15 this year was so that I can try out Princess 77's big brother and to show my process for overseeding. It will be interesting to see if there's a noticeable difference in color over the next few months. I'll be sure to bring you guys along as I find out! 😎.
Ron Henry, indeed. The Princess 77 came in much darker this year, prob because it is thicker this year too. I get compliments weekly on my lawn from neighbors walking by, so definitely, nobody is complaining that I overseeded my hybrid Bermuda with a seeded variety of Bermuda. 😂 It’s all for the love of the lawn.
Hi Ron, stumbled across your video here - great stuff. I am near Alpharetta, GA and recently moved into a 2005-era home/yard where they used common Bermuda and I have quite the ill lawn. Currently getting it up to par with pre/post emergents and then eventually have to level out some eroded and wavy spots throughout. I bought a bag of Highlander Turf Bermuda from Hancock Seed Co. and have it sitting until it's time to overseed. I was also planning on using that Big Yellow Bag (SOIL3) to level the lawn. Thoughts on that seed type and the soil? Can I level and overseed all at the same time? Was thinking of also dropping down a balanced fertilizer and Humicar with the seed. Let me know optimal time to accomplish in GA weather - I've read around mid-summer. Thank you!!
If your plan is to renovate your lawn taking the seed route, the window opens in early May if you live in GA. For leveling, I would use this: ron-henry.com/topdressing You can do it all at the same time. Check out this video to see the process I've used in the past: ua-cam.com/video/AdB2HEUOEJg/v-deo.html
@@RonHenry Phenomenal, Ron! Yea that's it! The SuperSod/Big Yellow bag stuff. I believe they are right in the adjoining town too. Thanks for the video and showing how to do it with regular hand tools!
Subbed to the channel. Love you videos! I am a rookie but have began reel mowing at 1 1/2 inch on my common bermuda. I live in a Southern California desert by PGA West. My 2 questions are: 1. When I overseed my lawn with PRG in the fall, how low can I keep that grass? Will 1/2 to 1 inch work? 2. What type of Hybrid Bermuda should I overseed my Common Bermuda with for extreme heat (115 to 120 degrees in Summer) in the desert? Thanks
Thanks so much JonD. Really means a lot. I've never overseeded my Bermuda with Rye so I'm not sure exactly what kind of results you'll get. You will want to mow it a touch higher than you are Bermuda. More in the 1.5" range is where it will be happy. I've overseeded my hybrid Tifway 419 with Arden 15. It matches the color very well. You could do that with common Bermuda, but be prepared to deal with differences in color while the Arden 15 spreads. How good of a job your do with applying the seed will dictate how even the look is. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Again, thanks so much for subscribing! 👍😎
I can help here. Perennial Rye will not survive the heat no matter how much you water or how high you cut it. It is just going to burn out . The most I’ve gotten Rye into the summer is early May. It is beautiful during the cooler months, and you can begin over seeding Rye in mid September in the desert SW, so that gives you from October to the end of April most years to enjoy the beautiful PRG.
There isn’t a direct successor to Arden/Princess 77 yet. Yukon and Monaco are well-regarded Bermuda grass seeds though. So if you’re doing a renovation project I’d look into one of those 2.
Watched your video on the overseeding procedures. I only have the front yard to do totaling about 6 thou sq. ft.. Only going to put down about 1 pnd per thou ft. Ill be getting Arden15 from the company you purchased yours thru as I live down here south of Macon Ga.. When I order from them is there a comments section where I can state that I purchased thru them because of you and your videos?? Thanks again, wish me luck.
I don't think they have a comment section on their order form but you can always call them to let them know. :-) 800.552.1027. I also called them and told them to keep it in stock on their Amazon store because I didn't want to make a video and then people not be able to get the seed. amzn.to/3cqBIsZ. When are you starting your overseeding project? You'll have to definitely let me know how it progresses. I imagine Macon has been a bit warmer than North GA. You shouldn't have issues getting the seed to germinate nicely.😎 Appreciate you watching the content.
@@RonHenry Yes we are about 6-12 days ground heat wise ahead in the spring. I decided to over seed once I get the yard aerated and a company to top dress the yard. It needs leveling bad, especially since I plane on a reel mower next year. I think the top dressing will help the new seed germinate thru protection and a good base for rooting. Thanks again for the video and reply.
@RonHenry I have been experimenting with The Arden 15. It’s probably the wrong time of year here in central Texas due to the heat, but maybe you can give me a few pointers. I have added compost, sand, topsoil mixed to a small section to test the Arden15. The Arden15 germinates no problem, but dies once it gets to about 1/4” to 1/2” in length. I’m not sure if it’s the 100 degree weather or my watering. I try not to let the soil dry out to ensure I am getting maximum germination but all my Arden15 dies after about two weeks from germination.
I'd say more water J Anthony. Bermuda is pretty hard to kill once it starts growing so even though it's turning brown, I wouldn't count the Arden 15 out just yet. If you do another round of testing, lets try picking up the watering to ensure that for 3 weeks, the turf never gets dry. The new grass should be strong enough at that point to handle a reduced watering program
Ron, is there any noticeable difference in the appearance of Arden 15 and T-419 in terms of the blades of grass? In other words, if you were looking at the lawn while standing on it, would you be able to distinguish the two different types, or do they blend in rather seamlessly? Thanks!
Hi Phidip. Arden 15 is a bit finer leaf but you really have to be close to see the difference. The most apparent difference is color. Arden is deeper. If you'd like to see the color differences as the lawn transitions to dormancy, check out this playlist from last fall: ua-cam.com/video/Ls4QuA6JYVY/v-deo.html
If you want it to all match, you'll want to eliminate the existing grass. I've not seen Blackjack mixed with common before to be able to say how it would look.
Hey Ron I have been considering Arden 15 here in Nashville TN. I currently have tall fescue and as you would expect is A LOT of work in mid June, July and August. My concern is the dormancy during our winters here in Nashville, and I just don’t know about the color I would experience during the cooler months. Any thoughts or info would be appreciated. Thanks and keep up the good work👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Heya Sam Queen. In my opinion, the issue with overseeding tall fescue with any type of Bermuda is what you'd have to deal with during the transition months. Bermuda comes out of dormancy in March/April while the tall fescue is still doing well. This is likely to slow the Bermuda growth because you have another grass competing with it. There's also the appearance difference you're likely to see when they're both on the lawn. This is the reason why I've opted to not overseed my lawn with rye in the winter months for a year round green lawn. I believe it would create too much headache once the Bermuda started to come back. Also consider that you'd have to be more careful which products you apply to the lawn because now you have 2 different grass types to consider for compatibility instead of one. Does that make sense?
Hi Jai. The price is fairly standardized across the industry I think. Might be able to find it a few dollars cheaper occasionally but overall, it's a pretty expensive seed.
Ron Henry you’re correct. I thought I seen it less expensive on SeedWorld website. But, after previous message i checked and found the rates even higher at S-W. Oh well, I just purchased my Arden 15 for my Georgia lawn yesterday. Can’t wait to overseer. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. I have been reel mowing my common Bermuda for two summers. Do you think I would have any success over seeding my common Bermuda with a hybrid? The common Bermuda was already established when we moved in. Really don’t want to do a full reno.
Heya Thomas. The big thing with overseeding common Bermuda is that the color is likely going to be less of a match than Arden 15. That said, if you're willing to put up with a bit of difference in color while the Arden 15 takes root, you can go ahead with overseeding. Just wanted to give you an idea of what to expect. Let me know which way you decide to go. 😎🌿
Hi Ron Henry, love your video very informative. I’ve also subscribed to your channel , I live in Panama , the country of Panama. I bought a ranch out here, my lawn has some Bermuda and I love it . Having said that I want to overawed with Arden Bermuda . Is this a good idea, or do I have to remove everything first?
Hi Giuseppe. The best way to go is to remove the existing grass before seeding. You'll get a more even result with less differences in color. That's the best way to go as long as you are willing to do all the work associated with it. It's very important to water the new grass seed regularly for the first 3 weeks until you get good germination. The hardest part of establishing Bermuda from seed is the watering requirements. Let me know need help with anything else. 👍😎
@@RonHenry thank you for the quick reply, rainy season has started here in Panama so water won’t be a problem. Dude keep up the good work , watched your other video sweet.
We have a low quality bermuda grass right now. If we want to have princess or arden instead, should we kill the first grass type first? Or will over-seeding with the new variety work?
Yes Nick. The best option would be to kill the existing lawn and replace it with whichever grass you want. Can't really do Arden or Princess since they've both been discontinued.
Just FYI - affiliate link is broken. Thinking about overseeding TifTuf after next topdressing. Don’t mind color difference, just want better performance for soccer. Good idea? Is Arden 15 still the best choice?
Ron: Do you know if Arden 15 works well in the Southwest? I’m in Tucson and wondering if it would work well here. Also, do I need to basically get rid of my common Bermuda before overseeding?
Hi Steve. Arden 15 is discontinued so you'll likely have to use something else. If you don't have a huge area that you're trying to get grass to grow, then sod is MUCH easier than grass. I would get rid of the existing grass before installing new.
I seeded my yard with princess 77, how long before I start seeing grass grow? It has been 7 days since I did it. Hope you are able to respond. Thank you.
It should be within 14 days assuming ideal conditions. By ideal conditions I mean good moisture and soil temperatures. Do you know what the soil temps have been since you put the seed down? If temps have been cooler than ideal, you should still be ok but germination will take longer. I talk more about soil temps in this video. ua-cam.com/video/6C7CQHqU9GI/v-deo.html Let me know if I can help with anything else. 😎🙏
Hey Ron, nice lawn.. i saw your other video and arden 15 looks great! Question, when you overseed your lawn with arden 15, how long did you wait to mow? Or Did you wait until the new seed germinated and grown one inch? 2 inch?
I waited about 4 days before I started mowing again. I just raised the mower up a bit. I didn't want for it to get tall before resuming my mowing. You can see what it looks like now in this video: ua-cam.com/video/Vt6UUye1kzU/v-deo.html Thanks for watching. 🙏😎
Just discovered your channel. Love it. Learning a lot. I’m thinking about overseeding my celebration Bermuda with Arden 15. Would you recommend that? And what is the difference between celebration and Arden.
Welcome aboard Saul. I've not seen Celebration in person to know how well the colors would match. I know Arden 15 blends pretty well with Tifway 419. They're both drought tolerant with Arden 15 supposedly having better cold weather resistance. You really can't go wrong with either. If you decide to overseed, be sure to get coverage as even as possible so that they 2 cultivars blend well. Realize that it will probably take an entire season before the color evens out completely.
I planted arden 15 about 3 weeks ago. Everything is coming in very very nice. However, i also have lots of weeds germinating at the same time. Would you recommend spraying while grass is still sprouting and in seedling stage. Or just wait till its all established?
He Dean, I would wait until it's established. If you want to get rid of the weeds in the meantime, I'd just pull them manually. It's more work but that way you're not putting a herbicide down which can potentially damage your Arden 15 grass. Happy to hear that your overseeding project is going well! 😊👍
Thanks so much Dean! I really appreciate it. If there's anything I can help out with, please let me me know. In the meantime, if you haven't seen my video on creating a golf course lawn, you might enjoy it. Thanks again! 👍😎ua-cam.com/video/t7phQgmQwIc/v-deo.html
Ron, I am planning to level my lawn with sand and overseed it immediately with arden seed with No aerating. What are your thoughts, will the seed germinate on the sand?
I wouldn't top dress the entire lawn with play sand. You want to have some organic material mixed in. In Georgia, we tend to use river sand mixed with organic material. One of the benefits of top dressing is you're also adding nutrient-rich soil to your lawn. If you do that, then it's absolutely the best time to overseed since the new seed will have fresh soil to work with. Make sense? Let me know if you have any other questions.
Hey Ron I’m doing a lawn renovation but I don’t want any weeds growing with my new lawn. What herbicide do you recommend I can put when I drop the new seed? I live in California and I’m dropping Bermuda seed. Thanks in advance
Not a great answer for this one Los. You can't use pre-emergent or you'll have poor germination. I would eliminate existing weeds as much as possible with a post-emergent herbicide like Celsius and/or Certainty and then plant your seed.
I just cut my yard monday i put some of this exact scotts Bermuda grass cause i live in west texas i watered the grass Tuesday night for about 2 hrs at night yesterday i raked on the bald spots i had and layed seeds with my hand spreader on 5th setting and then watered yard for about 2 hrs after laying seeds untill about 10pm and then it sprinkled light till this morning around 6am now ill water it again tonight or should i do it 3 times a day insted of once a day 2 hrs in the later afternoon around 8pm which would be better thanks for the help as well
Question, I have tifway419 but have common bermuda that he got into my yard from my neighbors yard. If I overseesd with Arden 15 would it over take both the 419 and the common? The blotchy spots are driving me crazy! Lol
It's not likely. Arden 15 isn't available anymore and even if it were, highly unlikely that it would take over the 419 and common. You'd just have 3 types of grass in your lawn.
I've watched bermuda grass videos til my eyes bled. Never heard of bernuda grass before. I bought a 5 lb bag of something called GCI Turf Alpha Elite. I hope something will grow. One of my questions is Why does everyone cut Bermuda SO SHORT?
Hi Michael. It's Bermuda so it'll grow pretty much anywhere. That said, I'd do all you can to get the soil in great shape. If you haven't done one as yet, consider doing a soil test so we can see what the soil's health is. One of the best $30 investments you can make in your turf. ron-henry.com/soiltest if you're interested.
Whats the best bermuda for arizona weather??? Looking to start from scratch . Just bought a house n been reading up on how to start. I heard first you wanna ammendment the soil n then mix in in about 6 inches deep n then a starter fertilizer n spread seeds n smooth them out n then add a compost on top of them 1/8 inch thick is this rite??? Fertilizer every 8 weeks after it grows???
Your process sounds correct Anthony. There are various types of Bermuda grass seeds. With Arden 15 being discontinued, a lot of people are moving towards Yukon. If you can get sod in your area, then Tahoma 31 is a newer cultivar that's been well-received. Have to install it via sod though.
@@RonHenry thx for replying. I got another question what about doing sod bermuda grass??? I heard it's alot easier n another question is milgronite safe fir dogs n how would I use that for sod??? I live in arizona so it's hot out here sometimes in the 115 120. When would I fertilize the lawn???
It depends on your tolerance for a temporary difference in color as the Arden 15 grows in and spreads throughout the Arden 15. The fastest result that will result in the most even color would involve killing your current grass and seeding the Arden 15. Tifway 419 is actually a really good grass type. Arden 15 is arguably better but again, whether to overseed or not depends on your tolerance. My lawn has been overseeded with both Princess 77 and Arden 15. If you're interested in seeing what a Tifway 419 overseeded lawn looks like check out this video: ua-cam.com/video/lPYtb5InjNc/v-deo.html Hope this helps.
Ron Henry I never thought about overseeding my Tiff because of the way 2 strands may look, but it looks like you had good success with it. Thanks for the response
Ron, I am in a transition zone 7, what is the germination period? I have a bermuda lawn but it is bare and thin with low P & K. Will early summer be a good time to seed when we have full green up? Also will be applying starter fertilizer to bring the P & K up. This is 500 sq ft approx, so will 2lb of the seed be sufficient?
Hi Top Cat. Any ideas why your existing Bermuda is thin? Assuming you're getting enough direct sunlight, it should be doing well. Early summer should work fine. Soil temps need to be 65 degrees or higher. 2lbs is more than enough for 500 square feet. Let me know if you have any other questions.
@@RonHenry Ron, there is a tree in the middle of our front yard and last summer had to spray the area with Weed-B-Gone (Nutsedge killer) for clover. I may have oversprayed and it was bare almost the whole of last season. It is a small section (50 sq ft) and another patch (20 sq ft). It feels like there is some kind of soft-stone like rock right under (probably left by builders 15 years back). Soil tests indicate good Ph but the P-K is low. I was thinking of plugging but this seed looks great.
Heya Top Cat. It’s going to be tough to get Bermuda to grow in areas of shade. Is there anything you can do to raise the canopy of the tree. Shade and Bermuda are mortal enemies.
I just got hydro seeding done last week. Please suggest the best fertilizer with NPK to put after 4 to 6 weeks. I was told the hydro seeding already had starter fertilizer. I live in Minnesota. Appreciate your help.
Heya World Peace. Scotts actually makes a decent starter fertilizer for new grass. hey question/ did you overseed on top of the bermuda that came with the house? or did you kill it and started from 0? i havent been able to find in your videos.
I sure did Static Alpha. I overseeded the sod the house came with with Princess 77 initially. This year i did Arden 15 since it's the successor to Princess 77. If you'd like to see the process and progress, check out this playlist: ua-cam.com/video/I18M0TgGS8k/v-deo.html Let me know if I can help with anything else.
Your best result will come from killing the current grass and starting fresh. You can over seed but there will be some color differences while the Arden 15 spreads throughout the lawn. It just depends on what you’re willing to live with. 👍😎
@@RonHenry thank you again, that really helps, sorry one more question, should i kill it, top dress then seed, or kill it , seed and topdress on top of the new seed ?
You could compare it to tall fescue and Kentucky blue grass for its feel and texture. Maybe let it grow out a little bit and be shaggy so we can see what it looks like. I don’t know, does that help with some ideas? Thanks again
I'll see if I can find someone nearby with Kentucky blue grass. With Bermuda, you don't really want it longer than inches max. 1 - 1.5 is about as long as I let mine get because it starts getting clumpy looking. Bermuda that's too long ends up looking like dirty carpet.
Hi Michael. I got it from Hancock Seed. You can get it here on Amazon: amzn.to/3bzVaWQ Unfortunately it's not cheap stuff. Let me know if I can help with anything else.
@@RonHenry I was looking at it on Hancock’s website last night and it’s a little cheaper than what you linked on Amazon I just didn’t know if you got it somewhere local or not. I’m thinking of picking up a 1 pound bag just to fill in the bare spots I mentioned the other day and see how I like it
@@michaelhamer1029 sounds good man. You'll want to wait until soil temps are above 65 degrees to get the best possible germination. In most of the country, it's too cold to seed Bermuda right now. Jan 12th.
@@RonHenry yeah just getting my ducks in a row so spring doesn’t sneak up on me. I got rid of the 3 ant beds I let die off today and did a little survey of the lawn to see what I need to get done. I’m patiently waiting on the lawn whisperer to announce the giveaway winner so I know if I need to buy a spreader or not 😂
Not sure A Perez if there’s a right or wrong? I’ve not seen Allyn’s video so not sure if he’s referring to overseeding Bermuda with Bermuda or some other grass type.
Hi Cory. I wasn't sure on this one so I had to look it up. There's only one website I've found that lists which Bermudas are hypoallergenic: www.westcoastturf.com/BermudaGrass Princess 77 and Arden 15 aren't on that list.
So you’re going against recommended wisdom. Typically you don’t want to mix cultivars. Let’s wait until it’s all green cause the seed you threw down isn’t what we’re seeing yet. We’re still seeing your previous efforts. I may be in minority but I do see uneven color. At least in the vid. Interested in seeing more down the line.
Sure thing Frankie. What you’re seeing now is the Princess 77 from previous seasons. I imagine that by summer the Arden 15 will have taken root and we’ll see color differences if any. I know there's a feeling by some other lawn care enthusiasts that you shouldn't overseed Bermuda but I've had great results with it. If you look at my previous videos on Princess 77, I point out areas where there was initially some color difference. Over the past year though, it's evened out very nicely. Just takes a bit of patience like most things related to lawn care. 😎 So you are completely against overseeding one Bermuda type with another?
Ron Henry as a “General’ opinion, yes,,,I’m against overseeing with Bermuda or more specifically seeding Bermuda over a sod(hybrid) cultivar. With that said, it’s all in the context of what ‘look’ of turf you want. In my lawn for example, like you, I have a tiff 419 sod (15yrs ). Prior to getting into the LawnCare knowledge in forums and videos like your channel, I also over-seeded a few problem spots with Arden 15 (cause I had researched it was quite good in quality) but it became immediately apparent to me that I was not gonna like the results... it stood out among my tiff. For context, I cut my lawn at 10-12mm depending on the time of year so it will “tell’ on you more than a lawn cut at let’s say 1.5”. So if I were a devil’s advocate, some of the positives you covered may I turn become negatives...They both have different growth characteristics, different color, different blade characteristics, etc...inwish I could post pics here to show you what I mean.
Your experience is very interesting Frankie. If you want, you can email me pictures at ron@ron-henry.com. I'd like to see what kind of color and texture differences you ran into. One thing that stood out is you said you overseeded a given problem area. Do you think your results would have been better if you'd done the entire lawn? I agree there differences in leaf texture and color, but if the seed is evenly applied over the entire lawn, it should blend fairly well. At least that's been my experience. Thanks for sharing your experience with overseeding.
Ron Henry that’s absolutely a contributing factor. The fact I only did spots. An entire application would certainly blend in much better. You will in essence end up with one of those “blends” that seed stores sell. Some are actually quality cultivars. But IMO suited for athletic fields, tall laws or higher traffic areas, not a golf course type application. Again. It’s just One mans observations and opinions. I think it would be a good idea if you can do a vid interviewing maybe one of your local golf course superintendents or foremen and get their experiences and observations.
That’s a great idea Frankie. There are several golf courses nearby so I can reach out to one of the to get their thoughts. Their perspective is likely to be very different from that of lawn care enthusiast. Great idea.😎👍

Thanks Perpetual Student. Hopefully they're ok to watch. I've been trying to improve the newer ones over time. Appreciate you watching.
@@RonHenry am I? I am Zone 7b outside of bham. I thought we were the same.
I stand corrected. I mistakenly had zone 7 as TN and KY but that's zone 6. We are in the same zone.
@@RonHenry hahaha, no biggie I thought maybe I was wrong and you were not in the Atlanta area. Anyway back to Yukon, I almost miss the smaller leaf blade texture but I love adding at least 2 months to my lawn season. love the vid. you inspire me to turn my lawn to bermuda
Thanks so much sir. You don't have to convert to Bermuda. We can get your grass type looking great too. 😎
☀️ Does your neighbor follow the same fertilization regimen as you? Yards looking great!! ☀️
Yes he does. He's been doing the same thing I have this year. The Princess 77 does make a pretty big difference in green up. Thanks sir!
@@RonHenry I hope so. I'm looking to get 5 tons very soon. I just core aerated, now just waiting for it to start growing stronger before I sand.
5 tons?!? Now that’s commitment. 😎👊 How big of an area are you doing?
@@RonHenry about 5k sq ft. I'll put any leftover in the backyard. It will be a workout for sure 💪😁
It will be a workout but think about how awesome your lawn will look afterwards! Totally worth the effort.😎
Nicely done Ron. I'm still waiting on the weather to cooperate for my little bermuda project. The soil temp up here is only 61*F. Bummer.
Thanks Richard. I imagine in a couple of weeks temps should be high enough that overseeding will work well. Assuming the weather doesn’t go crazy, you should be good to go in early June.
Once temps get warmer, are you considering overseeding?
Not an overseed... new establishment for new lawn in new house. Going to put down a blend of Blackjack, Maya and Yukon.
Very nice Richard. It should look awesome.
I threw some princess 77 down a few years ago in the fall. Really didn’t do anything besides fertilize a few times a year and it took off in the sun. For the shade I put zoysia, it’s probably going to take of the Bermuda eventually.
Thanks for sharing your experience Richard. Princess 77 and the new Arden 15 grow pretty easily. I'm very happy with the grass type.
Thanks for your support.
Very good learning video
Many many thanks. Glad that you found it useful!

Subbed to the channel. Love you videos!
I am a rookie but have began reel mowing at 1 1/2 inch on my common bermuda. I live in a Southern California desert by PGA West. My 2 questions are:
Hi Ron, what is the current equivalent to Arden/Princess?
What does the Ardent 15 look like when its fully grown out? Also is it soft to walk on barefoot?
David, It's a deep greenish blue color. It feels like carpet to walk on. It's amazing stuff. I'll create a video on that topic if you'd like.
Ron Henry ok will do. Thank you for the guidance.
Nice video. Is there still arden 15?
Not anymore. It’s been discontinued.
What are your thoughts on blackjack and I have patchy spots of common. Can I still overseed with common present?
Ron Henry thanks Ron. If I did go with the Arden 15 I was gonna kill off all the fescue.
Oh in that case, by all means proceed. That definitely changes things Sam. 👍😎
Good Stuff. Have you tried Seed World? I don’t remember the cost being that much for P77.
Thanks.
Awesome Jai! Definitely let me know how your overseeding goes. Arden 15 is pretty awesome stuff. 😎
My man you have a nice Supra !
Thank you!

Thank Patrick. I think it's broken because Arden 15 and Princess 77 are no longer a thing. They've both been discontinued.
I would get rid of the existing grass before installing new.
can you used arden 15 grass for making soccer fields?
Yes Leonid. It’s Bermuda so takes wear very well
I seeded my yard with princess 77, how long before I start seeing grass grow? It has been 7 days since I did it. Hope you are able to respond. Thank you.
It should be within 14 days assuming ideal conditions. By ideal conditions I mean good moisture and soil temperatures. Do you know what the soil temps have been since you put the seed down? If temps have been cooler than ideal, you should still be ok but germination will take longer. I talk more about soil temps in this video. ua-cam.com/video/6C7CQHqU9GI/v-deo.html Let me know if I can help with anything else. 😎🙏
Did it grow? I used bermuda seed 2 days ago and am super stressed about whether its gonna do anything. I have a yard full of only dirt lol
@@Nothanks935 I’ve got the same question
It will grow. Can take a few weeks but as long as you’re keeping the seed moist, you’ll get germination.

@@RonHenry Only 6,000 sq.ft....really trying to get more spread over problem areas, but these cool temps it's spook slow, lol
We're starting to get hotter weather. Now is actually a pretty good time to put down grass seed if you're planning to do it this season.😎
@@RonHenry awesome advice. Thank you. Subbed!
@@RonHenry ok I’ll give that a try thanks!
Do you have a recommendation for a similar seed now that Arden 15 is discontinued?
Not really. There’s been no replacement announced that I’m aware of.

@@RonHenry thanks for the reply. Got it! Based on your experience anything I can do to get rid of the common besides pro plugging or resoding?
I've watched bermuda grass videos til my eyes bled.
Never heard of bernuda grass before. I bought a 5 lb bag of something called GCI Turf Alpha Elite. I hope something will grow.
One of my questions is Why does everyone cut Bermuda SO SHORT?
Because we can Panda Rush. The grass loves it and is the way to go if you want a golf course look. Big time commitment though.
I have a rocky limestone filled soil (Texas). How do you think the Arden 15 will take?
Hi Michael. It's Bermuda so it'll grow pretty much anywhere. That said, I'd do all you can to get the soil in great shape.

If I have a Tiff419 lawn, I can overseed with Arden or do I need to pull up the Tiff ?
Check out this video I just released. Should be helpful. ua-cam.com/video/f_H75J4KMCs/v-deo.html
@@RonHenry Thank you, will look at it!
Without knowing the fertilizer content used in your hydroseed mixture, I would apply it at half bag rate just to be safe. Here's a link to it on Amazon amzn.to/2SSP0qq Let me know if I can help with anything else. Ping me to let me know how the project works out.😎
I can't find Arden 15 anywhere now.
It's been discontinued Marina.
hey question/ did you overseed on top of the bermuda that came with the house? or did you kill it and started from 0? i havent been able to find in your videos.
@@RonHenry awesome thank you, i was asking because my house has hybrid bermuda and im not sure if seed on top of that or kill it, then seed.
@@rizocars6115 if you're going full renovation, i would kill it, top dress and then seed. Put peat moss down on the fresh seed.
Just going through a lot of your videos and you may have said in the video and I missed it but where did you buy your arden15 seeds?
Hi Michael. I got it from Hancock Seed. You can get it here on Amazon: amzn.to/3bzVaWQ Unfortunately it's not cheap stuff. Let me know if I can help with anything else.
I also just updated the links in the description.
I’m patiently waiting on the lawn whisperer to announce the giveaway winner so I know if I need to buy a spreader or not 😂
Allyn Hane The Lawn Care Nut says no to overseeding Bermuda, you say yes..who is correct?
Not sure A Perez if there’s a right or wrong? I’ve not seen Allyn’s video so not sure if he’s referring to overseeding Bermuda with Bermuda or some other grass type.
Bermuda seed at big box is usually common bermuda, mixing that and hybrid is not recommended. They look very different
How many lbs per 1000 sq ft For overseeding
1 - 2 lbs per 1k Arturo.
Ron, you keep your hair like you keep your turf...
This is true! 🤣
Where in Georgia are you?
Northeast Georgia in the Gainesville area. Are you in Georgia too?
Ron Yes canton area
Nice nice. What kind of lawn are you working with?
Ron Henry mainly Bermuda, some fescue. I own a landscape maintenance company.
@@sgl41377 Very cool. Honored that a lawn care professional would look at my videos. Definitely let me know if I can help out with anything.
Are Princess 77 and Arden 15 hypoallergenic?
Hi Cory. I wasn't sure on this one so I had to look it up. There's only one website I've found that lists which Bermudas are hypoallergenic: www.westcoastturf.com/BermudaGrass Princess 77 and Arden 15 aren't on that list.
@@RonHenry cool, I'll look into it some more. If I find anything I'll post it here.
@@CoryFalde175 sounds good man. I'll look out for it.
I found a website that specifically said how to control the pollen level of Princess 77, so it doesn't seem to be hypoallergenic. Thanks
Cory Falde thanks for letting me know. 👍😎
So you are completely against overseeding one Bermuda type with another?
