I have a lot of driving footage on the way!
I would love to see the RS7 go versus the R8 in a drag race!
Awesome! Looking forward to seeing it. Muffler Delete to save money?
Samcrac If this is going to be resold, there a rather popular UA-cam MotoVlogger "Walteriffic" up in Kansas (?? I believe) that has been looking/saving to buy one. Perhaps this is a great candidate for him and for you both to dual-vlog about during and after sale. Food for thought.
New Exhaust on the way?
Glad to see the computers survived all the welding.
this has to be the fasted rebuild I've seen!
The exact opposite of what everyone else does and cheaper!
V Tuned I’m a big fan!
Having a high-limit credit card and a shop/space to wrench is what makes doing mods possible & fast....as apposed to most folks who don't have the aforementioned items. Love the build so far...kudos on a great car and fix.
V Tuned fastest isn’t always smart.
Tavarish....hear that? Sam does know how to keep a project moving and keep people entertained...without all the click-bait.

Dont get me wrong, I love tavarish! But some times I think the ideas he has are just idiotic and im never sure he knows what hes doing. Nevertheless, hes still really entertaining
@David Bryant Lol you wish
As an aerospace structural engineer dealing with thin walled aluminium and carbon composite structures I will say this: Yes, this repair is probably not as strong as the factory repair, and yes, ideally you would want the front subframe to be replaced. At the very least, after a weldment like this you want to thermal cycle the part for stress relief followed by an ageing cycle according to the alloy supplier's specification to get back to the proper strength.
However, this repair will probably work fine. This is not a crash structure and has not been designed to take substantial crash loading or to absorb a substantial amount of energy during a crash. Additionally, from the video, the crack looks to be a fatigue crack. This part, or any part for that matter, of the frame should not be over-stressed during service and the part is unlikely to see anything close to yield stress. It wouldn't surprise me if this part would never exceed 30 or 50% of its failure load. The additional reinforcements help to reduce the stress level further to increase the fatigue life, probably to such an extent that the fatigue cracks should not recur. Would I use this car to find its top speed? Probably not. But anything below 150-180 MPH would be unlikely to be an issue.
The only thing I would be concerned about is that the added plate increases the stiffness of this part of the structure, attracting more load, which could ultimately make the fatigue problem worse rather than better. There is no way to know if this is the case without detailed FEM analyses, but considering that Audi saw fit to weld on a reinforcing plate its probably not an issue.
Or shift the stress to another area which isn't reinforced
My cat's breath smells like cat food
anything below 150-180 hah. Just keep it on the street, who would know, you still got a car that can beat anything from any traffic light.
As a car enthusiast, if It works, fuck the engineers
@@jrag1000 I've spent quite some time on the German autobahn. There you regularly see people blazing past at 150+ MPH where there is no speed limit. For this use case I would stick with new or factory repaired cars.
Samcrac fixed a salvage R8 with cracked frame, in the same time Tavarish managed to clean the seats of the Lambo.
Nebbia affaraccimiei tavarish is not a wrench it type of dood ! He’s a tryhard

Sam is about to finish his 3rd car, tavarish is still on his first.
Please tell me you got an alignment too:) The stance will settle recheck after miles are put on it then youll know...Sam Decrac'd his R8 so its now crac free :)
I try to drive the vehicle for a few weeks or a few hundred miles, whichever comes first, before an alignment to allow for settling.
@@imolazhp11 So what do you do if the alignment is too screwed up for you to drive it that long? As a mechanic, we I always do alignments on new parts and don't see any issues. If you think they do things any differently at the factory when the cars are new then think again. Just driving it off the lift and onto the alignment rack is enough. Case and point, my car. I had done an alignment on it the year before and the rear always sat low. While changing out my snow tires I noticed one of the rear springs was broken so I got a new pair. While changing them I noticed the other one was also broken in a place that is impossible to see so the alignment was probably done with at least one of the springs broken. After that the ride height went up at least an inch. I checked the alignment afterwards and everything was still in the green. Two years later the ride height hasn't changed.
@@madmatt2024 I am by no means a mechanic and would never suggest someone drive a vehicle that is unsafe. When working on my own cars, I have lowered all but one vehicle I have ever owned (a Nissan Titan), I have never had one of so many be "too screwed up" to drive for a few hundred miles before aligning. Sounds like you are talking about a vehicle with coil spring rear suspension, possibly trailing arm suspension; most of the vehicles I have experience with are McPhearson strut vehicles. Your results may vary.
Hey Sam! Keep in mind that whenever you are adjusting the height of the car, the bolts of the control arms and such should be loosened and tightened to the new height. Otherwise the bushings will wore out really fast.

actually the proper way is to uncheck the option for mag ride in the vag com. no need for the $400 sensors and no error.
paul kieffer but vcds also costs around $500
tahaak alliexpress $40 HUUUGE savings
TheSponge well, you don‘t pay for the cable. That cable alone costs around $2 in production. You pay for the software and lifetime support. And at AliExpress you‘ll get an outdated cracked version of the software that may work flawlessly or mess up your car’s electronics. And on an Audi R8 I wouldn‘t risk that for a couple bucks on savings...

@@Samcrac you know you want to! Haha
What I'm interested in is, is if this car is worth more after the repair job? I think this repair didn't do anything to the overall value of the car?
@@paulloper8333, it probably would not have much of an increase in the value if you tried to trade it in. All any dealer would give you is salvage value since that way they risk little. But to a private party, it is potentially worth more, probably 25% or so less than a comparable clean title car. Fwiw, CarMax offered me $10.5k for my rebuilt essentially salvage 16 Mustang GT, but I could certainly get about $18-$20k for it vs $25k+ for a clean one. Maybe more.
@ 8:52 I've been waiting for that since the first video when you got the Audi!

Happy Sunday Sam
7:28 Amazing. With new shocks installed, your car sounds like a jet engine. ;-)

@@scottyspeedshop9951 Look at the time code. He backed out of the garage when a plane when by, perfectly synced with the car's movement. It was a joke. Although, we you need to describe it, it's no joke anymore. It's a dud.
9:11 i almost had a heart attack. I loved your entire build process
Maybe down another 1/4” in the rear.
Yep
If you can sell your second hand Magride shock absorbers for $300 each why didn’t you just buy one? Then the car would have remained stock and adjustable on the dash and it would have cost less than the $400 for the Magride delete sensors let alone the coil overs? Did you get them for free as a sponsorship deal? You’re going to have hell of a car for relative cheap money in the end though!
I'd imagine he got them free or deeply discounted for giving the company a plug on his channel, seeing that he has 500k subscribers
Per his video..the magride will fail at some point...Prematurely! The coilovers are lifetime warranty and is also adjustable. Best of both worlds
D- Block everything thing fails eventually, used get more value the more stock the vehicle is, plus now you can’t use the different modes the car has to offer right ?
@@Chewyness The car has a salvage title, value is irrelevant.
@@TheCobruhAlienat0r You are correct. As a salvage title car, you can go WAY far from stock and not really hurt the value any more than that title will do. It's the perfect car to keep the "save the supercar" types from waving their arms and screaming about nasty modifications. Honestly, this so far has been a nice repair, and the suspension seems decent. Probably not as nice as stock, but unique and completely fine for the car.
Why didn't you consider buying a used mag ride shock for ~$500? You spent $400 for the delete mod And you would have been able to keep the factory suspension functions.
He said those oem shock failed eventualy, did not know why. Maybe a problem in them or something ??
@@QuebecoisSti They all seem to be failing. They are licensed to Audi by GM if that's any clue.
I was wondering the same thing.
Idk how reliable it is, but I'm pretty sure I've heard you should never buy used suspension components, because you never know how the condition of it?
Yep, I would have bought a used one and gone that route. If it didn't work out, or last very long, then try coilovers. But to mess with the factory suspension option is a hack job, IMO, especially on a supercar and especially one so affordable.
If you use the black tape you can’t turn traction control off if you have the suspension light on the dash
Sam I love your videos! You do awesome work! Keep it up!!! Greetings from the Netherlands!
Good videos! I'll still be seriously surprised if the repair lasts though... Such huge forces going through these little pieces of aluminium.. Be interesting to see regardless! Would've 100% kept the standard suspension though - one used shock would've been worth the gamble in my book for the cracking ride quality. Front's a little low for my taste too, but I'm old fashioned like that.
Seeing the thickness of the plates.
Seems too be more then the last video in place actually rather then the single large one if I'm not mistaken.
They are covered in the right spots over the majority of the cracks so it shouldn't break anywhere really again for some driving, it's not going too do any racing anytime soon on a track anyway so for daily driving & perhaps something like a gumball 3000 run it will be fine.
(Won't be as strong as a factory repair that replaces the entire front end no i don't have any doubt that it will be weaker then that.)
But having 5 - 15% less strength compared too the factory job is not going too be an issue unless you do like 70 mph over a speed bump, curb or something like head on into a guardrail that cuts the front in two & absolutely destroys the car suspension anyway.
The car frame is full of welds similar too the repair anyway for strength only that its done with robots & a bit more advanced welders that does perhaps increase tensile strength 10% compared too a professional that has been welding aluminium for 10 - 15 years as their job.
Heat from the welding of those plates shouldn't be much of an issue as long as it's a clean job done in one go really which it really is per plate.
it would be a difference if the guy was spot welding near the same spots for like 2 hours & redoing it a bunch of times because he has the wrong settings on the welder & keeps fucking up & just essentially making the aluminum crumble around the repair then it would be something too be worried about.
That frame repair is super clean tho
*German engineer has left the chat*
I like @7:26 how the airplane sound))) makes it feel like car has a turbine engine
jet wash
great videos. I would love to make a find like that!! Congratulations! One of the lnicest looking cars on the road in my mind.
I cringe when you hammered and then rips of a piece of aluminum where you bolt the struts. But the end result was amazing. And good job in putting coilovers. Ride height was spot on. You can also corner weight the car to get the most out of your new coilovers and improve the overall car balance. Also about the heated aluminium , he did add thick plates and it should mitigate it. Overall id say its a job well done. What a bargain find. Im jealous.
Keep up the good work Sam. Ps You almost gave me a heart attack when you did that swerving stunt. Hehehe
7:25 that Audi engine sounds crazy backing up like that!!
This is probably the fastest rebuild project, probably because it had the least amount of damage for a totaled car. You really managed to get a great deal, I just hope there's nothing else wrong with the car, maybe you should get a full inspection from someone who knows an R8 through and through, if you haven't already.
Thanks for telling us about FCPEuro! I'm rebuilding a Volvo C30 and almost every part I need is on their site with a lifetime warranty! much appreciated!
Sam, get a strut brace for the front end. Just for peace of mind of your viewers.
Just a random fact... The car doesn't actually have struts. Both Factory and what he has now arer just coil over shocks. In other words even if his top shock mount was to magically disappear, everything would stay in alignment and under control it will just drop to the bump stops.
Because there's no lateral force on it, a strut Tower brace would do nothing. Further if you look at the design of the car the windshield cowl and firewall are a strut tower brace...
@@TravisFabel Just curious... where are bump stops on R8 front axle?
@@petrsulc1168 the ones I'm referring to are between the frame and the control arm. When he swapping out the shocks, look at the upper control arm on the part to the rear of the car. There's a large casting bump that will hit the frame pocket. There are similar ones on the lower control arms.
Make no mistake these are not like the soft bump stops you have on the shock, but they are designed to hold the car in the event of a shock failure.
@@TravisFabel humm, then those parts should be checked for cracks.
I swear to god, this is the bargain of the century #R8

@@ZoiRen 30k , 500$ to repair frame, and another bill here and another grand on the glass he jammed hisself
You do this in Belgium, you'll have to add 5000$ tax just to put it on the road, plus 2500$ tax each year to keep it driving (so 7500$ the first year!!). Our gouvernement LOVES supercars! :((
@@krismolleke Well, 2500$ per year and as much as i know Belgium economics are not that bad... In Greece you pay 600€ per year for a 2000cc and about 600-1000€ more if the car is younger than 10 years... So guess for supercars ... And the monthly basic salary in Greece is 600€ ! Greatttttt!!!!

No Audi is a real Audi without a Check Engine Light on.
Friend of mine who recently passed away owned mechanic/repair shop. He always told when he had Audi show up past warranty needing repair he rubbed his hands together. He called them a cash cow.
Really? Because I've owned my '11 S4 now for 5.5 years as a daily driver and haven't had a single check engine light or problem with the car and I'm at 90K miles...Audi has come a Long way in the last 8 years.
@@NismoFinder Wish you continued good luck with your car-truly mean it. Just reporting what he told me because of expensive repairs when needed. I have only owned one Audi myself bought new in 1978 when Audi was not as well thought of. It was Audi 5000 sedan. It had leaking of water into the car whenever it rained or car was washed that saturated driver's side floor carpeting since new. Had it into the service department several times and could not be fixed. General Manager of dealership felt bad and let me apply total purchase price to purchase of 1978 BMW 633CSI. True story and last Audi I ever bought. Just left bad taste. I am sure Audis are fine but they are complex automobiles and expensive to repair if something goes wrong.

I’ve really been enjoying watching this project. Beautiful car, what a joy to save it.
Wow 7:30 the car sounds just like an air plane when you were backing it out!
Omg, you've drastically increased the stress on your welded frame! Don't you realise çoilovers are stiffer than stock factory set ups?
that should tecnically dont matter, the force on in is only the weight off the car, and that is not changed, not even after making the spring reaction stiffer...
@@MrBugsier5 suspension removes shock from uneven surfaces. Regardless of weight stiffer coils transmit more force to the body. Think of the ride difference between a soft and hard sprung bed.
Who cares.. it’s all about savings
Coilovers dont neccesarily increase ride stiffness. It depends on how you have em set up. Did you not hear him talk about the 30 different settings?
@@MrBugsier5 the weight isn't changed but the length of time the suspension has to absorb that bump is. When the time is decreased the peak G's increases. This increases the forces on the sprung components.
I do not get it, If a preloved OEM shock absorbers are $300 to $500, why go ahead and put coil overs and $400 worth of reservoir modules? At least with the original shocks you get the functionality of the original design and keep the resale value of the car higher.
I agree shoukd have put a used one on there
@Unintended Consequences the Original ones are also really reliable. they fail at the same rate as the coil-over set will
Makes sense to me, though on the OTHER HAND if the coil overs are far more durable and better then stock hell, Y NOT? I'D PAY FOR THE RESEVOIR DELETES. PLUS YOU DON'T REALLY KNOW BAD THE USED SHOCKS ARE. DUDE COULD HAVE WORN THE HELL OUT OF EM MASHING AROUND IN THE CAR AND IS DO I MY THE SAME AS SAM. JUST SAYING.
Personally I would take the damaged shock absorber apart, make a vertical press and use two V blocks and a dial gauge and try to straighten the shaft. Replace seals where necessary. Companies like Pedders may offer a service to fix the shock absorber or recommend a company who can, if it is too much. All you can do is creep up the learning curve. People only fail when they give up trying.
Massive rotors and brake drums. What a beautifull car you got there.
Love all your videos. Great work... and yes faster than Tavarish jajajaja
This might be a little late but anytime you install new shocks with adjustable ride heights you will want to wait a few months for the shock to "settle" under the weight of the car before setting final height. Even if you like the way it looks in a few months you should probably check to make sure both side settled evenly. Nice build!
