Radar & Laser Detectors: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW! Audi R8

  • After working on Alex Roy's Record Breaking M5, I wanted to learn more about how Radar and Laser detectors work and if they are legal in my state. Likewise, I wanted to understand what laser shifters do and how they work before deciding if they were right for me. Here is what I uncovered during my research and while filming the step by step installation process at AI design. Please note: Obviously, I'm not a legal expert, but the information in the video is a combination of what I've read online and gathered through various manufacturer "questions" emails. I chose the Escort CI 360 complete detection system for the Audi R8, as it is the latest defense system made for vehicles today and is legal in my state. Hope you enjoy! -L

@@jasonlisonbee On the motorway in my country they still use a system that calculates your average speed over at distance, using nothing more than a couple of internal timers.
When you pass a given point, the operator in the car will press a button to start your timer, when the operator passes the point himself, he will press another button to start his timer. After a mile or so, he will again pick a spot and when you pass, stop your timer, and when he passes he stops his own timer.
The system can then calculate the time you took to travel that distance and an average mph is calculated.
This system will never be able to detect that :)

@@AndrewBrowner I don't think you paid attention to the video whatsoever. Radar readings are picked up and notify the driver well before they can get a speed reading on you, and Laser readings are completely blocked. So you are protected either way. Sure you can go with a cheap home install and cheap hardware, but as you can see Larry clearly went for top-of-the-line with an OEM look.

By the time you sell it the next best thing will probably be out and the work and time and money to move this system from one car to the next won't be worth it. With continually evolving cat and mouse technology like this, this kind of "investment" appears to be a fools venture. Plus do the math.... You would have to get a LOT of REALLY BIG fines and frequently for this to ever be a break even proposition since most large fines can be pled down to parking offenses and what not. I'd say the system is too old to be effective long before you'd rack up $10k worth of fines. Be better off just paying the occasional fine.

James G to tell you the truth this is my second one as I didn’t take the first one (same exact system) and regretted it when I had to pay another 10k Or thereabouts, I’m sure in other states one could find someone to do it for way less though. He did a real custom job where it looks factory installed and could be concealed and stuff, display was up high and control panel was on middle console for easy access; over 40 billable install hours. But I’d just take the main units, receiver, jammers, control, and not necessarily remove all the cabling if too much of a pain; at least saving me from buying a new unit altogether. I’ve had this unit since 2013 and it’s still top of the line; updates are done wirelessly on it too. I hate driving without it really. I know I’ll never recover my 20k in at this point, and I never thought It would actually save me anything close to cost, but I can’t imagine driving any other car without it now. Still works amazing, I love the 5-10 second heads up especially in oncoming traffic front side.

1.The first one is when you have something like this and if you are driving on a road trip and you pass through a state that this is prohibited such as VA. Is there a way to turn off the system off completely so that you will not get in trouble or caught with this equipment?
    2. How much does something like this run for? Equipment and the installation.

I rock both Laser jammers and Radar Detectors and travel up the East Coast and/or do rallies. When I get to VA I unplug my detector and my Laser Jammer system can turn into a parking sensor system with a flip of a switch and/or after 10 seconds of jamming. The major thing VA goes for are the detectors, they even sit on the borders on 95 to catch people crossing.

Here's a tip that will save you a costly install. Just run with a radar/laser detector and Waze on your phone. Never drive in the fast lane unless passing. And always slow down when coming up on a blind spot in the road, such as a curve etc. Laser is line of sight. That means they have to see you and your vehicle has to be close enough for you to see them. When I see anything parked along the road in the distance I just slow down. I'm doing the speed limit long before I get close enough to be hit with laser.

A truly clean and professional installation. I own a Escort Passport and actually read the terms and conditions. I was shocked to read that when you use the GPS and the app, the data including your speed is recorded. If you do get caught speeding the police officer or judge can request the unit and have record of everything you've done over whatever period of time Escorts systems choose to record it for. I do not use the GPS option.

I mean if you're going like 150 down a crowded highway than ok it can be very dangerous for others but 150 when when nobody is around should be ok. In other words if you can't affect someone else, then by all means go as fast as you can. I know it's fun and it doesn't matter what laws are, people will do it if they think they can get away with it. In that case i would 100% recommend getting these detectors just so you can have fun and not worry as much.

This way your lovely new car isn't stripped down to component level to get such installs.
For the sake of being legal for the Speed detectors OEM's should use vehicle GPS location to deactivate / reactive pending what US State you're driving through.

They can still use visual speed assessment if they want.....making a radar sense/laser scrambler system almost useless.
However I’ve tried them when I was an escort dealer roughly 10 years ago and they would alert very early! With a windshield mounted detector(Model 8500 or 9500) I was getting alerts so early I thought the detector was faulty. Turned out it wasn’t defective, it was detecting cruisers which were around 1-2 miles behind my vehicle. That was years ago....they must have insane range now! They make the best detectors in my book👍

In Missouri, we have a good solution for most speed traps. Local jurisdictions can't keep the fine money if total fines exceed a relatively low threshold amount of the local budget. They can still write tickets, of course. But they don't get to keep the money. So they tend to write them for serious speeding, but not minor speeding. Sure, there are still traps. Especially state troopers on highways. But it isn't as bad as most states.

You can shift laser all you want, but the officers (in NY at least) are making visual speed estimations and are certified to be accurate to within +/- 5mph. The laser or radar is only to confirm their estimate but is NOT necessary to issue the summons. So if an officer shoots the laser and doesn't get a reading back, he's going to pull you over and write you a summons anyways based on his estimation.

Had his on, got hit by cop but didnt turn it off...we got pulled and cop started giving us a hard time. only way we got out of it is because we convinced the cop to reshoot the car when my friend turned off the laser jammer discreetly. we convinced the cop it was his gun...LOL My suggestion is to use it as early warning, slow down, then turn it off and let them get a reading on you.

Well then let’s talk about how much it cost on the video then. If you took it somewhere to have it installed and the fact that you work on cars tells me it’s somewhat more complex than the average Joe can’t do or willing to attempt. When you have to take the whole front clip off and the rear and all the plastics that takes time. Along with all the wires you have to hide to make it look nice. Remember time is money. So if you want it nice looking you get what you pay for. Also most car shops that do installs don’t have 3D printers. Better shops that do you pay the price. I think it looks great when it was done. I just don’t see it worth the money spent for the results. I’d rather spend it on something else like suspension or engine mods. But if you have that type of money to blow and feel it’s worth it great for you.

Personally, with how unreliable radar is, I think they should be banned from use. I was going 30 in a 30 (known speed trap, lived there for 6 months, police station is literally on the same road, and the road has pot holes and gravel debris). Even if I WAS a speeder, I wouldn't be speeding on that road. Got pulled over because the officer's radar claimed I was going 50 mph. There were no other cars around. The fact it can give off such bad readings should flat out eliminate it from use...as it's clearly flawed. This affects people's lives...it's not just speeding ticket costs, but it also affects their insurance rates. In my case, there was nothing I could do. I got the dash cam of the police officer...and as expected, no evidence of speeding. It was blatantly obvious I wasn't speeding. However, the judge refused to review the footage because she said it didn't matter since she doesn't do dismissals in her court. I either would have to draw it out to a jury trial, or just take deferred.

I've looked at that system, and it's pretty dang sweet, but MAN it's a steep install cost! I imagine yours was even more, given that they 3d printed a custom mirror frame for you and whatnot. By the time the system paid for itself in "saved" tickets, you'll be in a different car! I guess it may increase the resell value of your car, but I can't imagine by much. Either way, awesome video. I'd sure love to put that system in my Z06, but I'll just have to settle for my max 360. And agreed, haters saying "don't speed and you won't need a detector" is just trolly. Why even watch the video then?? Guess there are always going to be haters.

Wicked system! Was super impressed up to the moment where the terrible electronic voice from the 80s came on along with the same beep from that era. That one detail is hilarious when you consider how high end of a setup this is.
