    I always think of the post offices as shops, where people walk to, to post letters and cards, rather than thinking about the trucks so much. Think of that farm; there will be workers living in the worker barracks, they will like to send a letters home, "It's a lovely farm, plenty of work, good wage, glad to be here." Or the tourists getting off the train at the stations might want to send a card, "Arrived at New Tealand, It's lovely, wish you were here." or they are at a tourist attraction might want to post a card saying "At the Rocks. They are weird. Why are they here?"

    I checked the Wiki. Apparently Post is counted as Cargo. So I think it works as you said. The oldest call first gets priority etc. Post can also use the cargo trains. Automated Sorting can speed up the sorting process. Free Wifi apparently also have an impact.

    The rule of post is plot the post office as they have 10 building tile radius for people, the trucks go out to any place post is needed on a random need generator. The more post offices the quicker post office processing buildings send trucks out , however these processing plants work best if you have more than one in a large map s processing post buildings can send mail to each of them as well

    • @abramrexjoaquin7513
      @abramrexjoaquin7513 2 роки тому +14

      Also, it will be better that you put the post office far from a main road and even best to put it on the dead end roads or position it that it will pass by a specific industry/ park/ residentials before it reaches a vein to the main road.

  • @MattGrommes
    @MattGrommes 2 роки тому +16

    The road leading into the post office roundabout is going to get backed up because the right turn lane only lets people turn into the lane that only lets you turn into the post office road. So instead of 2 lanes going into that roundabout, there's effectively one full lane, and one that only goes to the post office.

  • @SiqueScarface
    @SiqueScarface 2 роки тому +29

    I wonder if the Post Office works by buildings asking the nearest post office for services, and if your area is not covered by a local post office, the vans of other offices will drive long distances to serve the requests.

      I think that's how those kinds of buildings work in general. I suffered a death wave last night in a part of town with a full cemetery, so the cemetery on the far side of the map had to collect the bodies (didn't have crematoriums yet). The far side then suffered a much worse death wave because all the hearses were busy elsewhere. That took a while to sort out.
      It seems to me that any building with its own fleet of vehicles operates the way you describe.

  • @alexandermueller5407

    Heya Biffa! Nice episode. Really liked it. One suggestion/remark: a postal sorting facility should be close to the airport. Lots of mail are transported by air, especially if you are living on an island like New Tealand (or Britain 😉 ). So it would make lots of sense to put it close to there.

    When you've got lots of facilities with the same name, it's tough at a glance to know which one it is talking about. If you add their neighborhood to their name, you won't have to click on their name and have the camera zoom away from the vehicle that you are inspecting.

  • @Ensivion

    From what I've seen, the post office works as so: Choose a destination that has a high demand for post then create a path to it, if you run out of post, return to the post sorting facility. Post offices are not directly related to each other, it just does each task when each post office has an available truck ready. The key about post office's "area of effect" is that the trucks themselves drop off to any building that needs it that is in its path, even if it wasn't apart of the original destination with high demand. This means that each post office certainly does have a kind of area of effect, but it's just about how your road network is set up.

    Too much sorted mail: needs more local offices
    Too much unsorted mail: needs more sorting facilities
    And sorting facilities help increase the efficiency, for locals trucks can focus on local service, not im/export; i.e. another sorting facilitiy may have more effect than adding several locals

    The pathfinding seems to be finding a "reddest" target and then being forced to service every building along the way. Post offices are most useful for office zones, which are very thirsty for services to reach maximum level. I can never remember which ones are which, but three of the zone types can take 13% tax while the other three top off at 12%. At level 1 development you can push to 14%.

    Quick info Biffa! Industry, offices, low residential and low commercial can have a max of 12% tax rate. High density commercial and residential can have a max of 13%.
    _Note:_
    Self sufficient high residential buildings require a lower tax rate than 13% when at level 5. For this you can use the "tax relief" policy in that zone policies. This way you don't have to lower the tax rate for all!

    • @nocensorship8092
      @nocensorship8092 2 роки тому +1

      that depends. I've done 13% across the board successfully a few times. You can also go higher than that with industry etc it always works to go higher if your district is very successful so if your industry is very profitable they can handle higher taxes. If you increase taxes and some businesses fail as a result, you can sometimes fix that by providing better services and roads making them survive the high taxes. But i actually don't bother because my cities tend to be hyper profitable i can run half tax rate if i want to

    A useful metric for a study like this is the land value, which can be measured district by district. The symbols you were questioning are representing an increase in land value. A post office is something every small town will have, and I incorporate one as soon as available, and then increase the numbers as I expand all the other municipal services. Nice job on the study.

    The "Geli districts" mod makes it so that the services only work in the district they're placed in. It is also compatible with the latest patch.
    However, you might find that u would have to place a lot more services than you're used to esp in uneven maps, but hey they don't send serv cars all the way across the world while leaving the house next door unattended😜
    Having said that, posts R useless I almost never bother with them just unnecessary traffic.
    The popup thingy above the workplaces when they upgrade is also an indication of increase in value, for residential it's the pop icon i.e more pops can reside there, and for workplaces, it's the money sign i.e they pay more.

    37:43 My read of the after graphic for the levels shows that your Office areas leveled up from level 2 to level 3 by a not insignificant amount; maybe ~15% or so more L3 offices. So perhaps office areas love them some post offices? I'd also guess that the other zoning types have reached full maturity for the city and it may be tough to squeeze out a few more L3/L5 buildings in those districts. Adding: 39:07 hold up, you don't have an IT Cluster district in your city yet? Maybe that can come in a future build as you do still need to fill out some of the legs of the TEArantula station.

    Also it is normally a good idea to reduce distances between things when possible:
    - so adding a second or third sorting facility around the map may help
    - also adding a Post Office right beside the sorting facility to get the mail to the buildings close to the sorting facility, so that the mail doesn't have to go to another zone and back again :)

    There's that big backup of trucks that we can see next to the post sorting facility at the end, like at 41:49. The trucks that don't want to go to the post sorting facility are all forced into the left lane of that road so they can take the middle lane of the roundabout. The easiest way to improve that flow would be to make the lane on the roundabout heading toward the post facility allowed to go straight and turn. Only the post trucks should turn (until you put other industry buildings down that road), while all the other goods trucks will continue around the roundabout.

    hey great video as always, you need to consider more than one postal sorting facility. they will bring in stuff from outside, so near a motorway is great but near a cargo train line is better, if you grow your postal sorting centre area with a cargo train station it will stop those lorries needing to head on the roads out of the city, have a second one near your airport with a cargo airport for example and you could have another next to your cargo harbour.
    in theory the postal vans will move post across the city as in internal mail, that is why the vans go so far, but the more you have the majority will stay fairly close to the post office as the sorting facility will collect mail and take it to the back to the sorting and send it back out to the other post offices, so more post offices and more sorting facilities will mean smaller average journeys for the vans. I have seen stuff saying one sorting facility for 5 post offices but i think you can get to 8, but look at your sorting facility capacity, you looked at a few post offices to see how much they were handling but not the sorting office.

    • @AlmaNegra420
      @AlmaNegra420 2 роки тому

      You do know that they pick up AND drop off mail, right? If you have a mailbox, that's what the flag on the side of it is for. You put something in your box and lift the flag to let the mailman know you put something in it. So, they do pick up, but most people don't send letters like that anymore. Or they have a mailbox for multiple residents with some kind of outgoing slot or something. You don't have to go to the post office to mail something unless it's a package that has to be weighed.

      @@AlmaNegra420 As far as I can tell the post offices work like commercial buildings. Only the trucks go out in stead of in. The building is the service for the neighborhood, indicated by the green roads radius. The trucks then go out and deliver the mail, indicated by the blue buildings. Truck go out full, when empty, they return to the post office. They would fill up on the way back if they pick up mail as well.

    One thing that really helps in these larger cities is having multiple processing facilities and maintenance buildings. Post sorting, that massive waste processing complex, park/road maintenance... all way more effective if you have one for every 3-4 squares you've unlocked. Helps to spread out the workload and effective AoE, while keeping their vehicle traffic more localized instead of running across the mapwide highways. I generally plan out a few different industrial zones to split up all the heavy traffic--including unique factories--and include these processing facilities in those areas to make sure all the cims have the resources and services they need without waiting for a truck for 5 tiles away.

    Biffa, the cover color shows those who RECIEVE the mail. To multiply the possibilities there is only one way to go, put a post office in each district where the other services are, just like any Police and or Fire stations.

    I think the way to imagine the postal service functioning is by thinking about the actual mail they'll be delivering.
    A resident wants to post a letter to a business on the other side of the city, so they chuck it in a post box near where the resident lives. The postal service then has to take this letter where it needs to go. That's why you get vans heading out of previously un-serviced areas, to go on a cross-city trip.
    The sorting offices *should* be the destination for these cross city trips, which then take the mail to the local offices, which then deliver to their local area. I think the way you noted them delivering their allocation (by simply shedding load as they drive past red buildings), is a product of the AI. Hopefully it will only persist while there are un-serviced areas, and when the postal service has full coverage, they'll stick to the sensible option.
    EDIT: and of course, this conclusion also occurs to Biffa about 15 minutes later. Glad to see my logic works

    Biffa quick tip regards to the spawn mod, if you place an invisible or surface road into the building you can put the spawn points further in. It can also help with the speed of the trucks getting off the road and reduce a bit of the congestion.

    The big roundabout close to the mail sorting facility has a right turn only lane leading into the new area, and since the main entry to that roundabout has 2 lanes, it means that standard traffic (not the postal service trucks), will only use the left lane to get in, as choosing the right lane would make them turn into the mail sorting facility area. That can cause a little bit of traffic backups, so if it isn’t intentional I’d look into it

    large parks have their own mail distribution system, as do amusement parks. Universities have a mail room inside the main hall which distributes mail to the residential facilities. Large industrial and commercial areas produce mail by the bulk, and usually have their own post office aside from their internal individual mail rooms.
    you may have something in the district settings of your university that prevents service vehicles from entering?
    post sorting stations work best when there is more than one. consider having one for every 3 post offices. collect mail, sent to post office, send to post sorting station, send to another post office, send to destination
    no matter where you start from, that ONE post sorting facility has to cover the whole map. all traffic leads to post sorting station

    Biffa I think the two symbols you mention around 18:15 are the upgrade one and the increased land value one. Many buildings in a city need land value to go up to upgrade and that increase in value can come about from many sources, apparently via a good quality post service too.

    I like to get the post coverage so pretty much every road (non-highway) has at least a green tint on it in the post info view (as with every other service). I have no hard evidence or studies like yours, but I really feel it improves traffic in the city because it keeps the post vehicles contained in smaller areas of travel. When you started they were covering the whole city wide which causes traffic due to huge dead mileage. It sounds weird, because more depots means more vehicles so it suggests more traffic. But keeping them efficient means keeping them local and off the major roads which means less traffic overall. Plus, they won't have to send out the max number of trucks per depot anymore! Would add more sorting facilities though, to again stop the vehicles covering so many dead mileage around the city. Would add 1 around Chai Beach (covers your starting build area), 1 around Orelando Heights (covers HMP GuilTea and No Problem Atoll) and you'll need another 1 off in the north area soon as well to cover the mountain town area, airport area and whatever else you build out that way.
