Saw this version of Fairport in Trondheim, Norway, must have been only a couple of days before or after this festival. A concert I still remember. SWARBRICK RULES!
That Norwegian crowd is undemonstrative, somewhere between dour and cool, which is what I recall roadying for a folk duo there. Someone is thinking: "maybe I go home for pickled Herrings?"
Rare and interesting footage. I saw them a couple of years later. I don’t think they were at their best in the late 70’s. They played well, but were a bit lacklustre and struggled to get any sort of atmosphere going.
The only time I got to see fairport was at the garden in the late eighties with fairport convention steeleye span and rennasaince.talk about a dream line up.
swarbrick when he was still young and healthy with a damn cigarette in his mouth. if not for the fing nicotine he could possibly look as healthy as richard thompson. what a waste. he was excellent with the fiddle and his vocals
Half the audience look elated (FP fans I guess), the other half at the front look totally bored. (locals I guess). FP are still wearing flares in 1976, that's surprising, or were they making a statement. & Swarb is sporting a mullet
With such a fun song (the hens march), I can only guess most of the straight-faced audience had spent too many hours there previously, or were soaking wet
Amazing what turns up on the interweb. Good as the DP and DS soloing on 'Sloth' is, it has little or no relationship with the actual song! Like a couple of other Fairport line-ups, this one is unbalanced for want of a proper lead guitarist.
Frank Eventi Dan Ar Bras was and is a brilliant guitarist, but not really what Fairport needed. Who could follow Richard Thompson? Maartin Alcock had the technical ability, but lacked the ‘feel’. Jerry Donahue similarly brilliant musician, but better with Fotheringhay. My favourite Fairport lineup was the first I saw in 1979, which evolved out of this one, with Simon Nicol, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Pegg and Bruce Rowlands. The Bonny a Bunch of Roses / Tipplers Tales lineup.
He rocks them though - and this is seriously good original music especially from around 11 minutes onwards - fantastic stuff - Swarbrick must be sadly missed by his fellow musicians.
Thank God for you tube. I can find the music I have loved all my life. Stuff I can’t find anymore.
like the white boiler suit flares. the music is superb. there will never be a better fiddler than Dave .HE was always so cheerful too.
Dungarees, are they called in the UK :D
Fantastic musician was Swarbrick.. Sad to see the bloody ciggie in his mouth.. Pity he ain't around still
Overalls here in the States

Wow, Dan Ar Bras in there! Thank you!!!
What's not to love about Dave Swarbrick.
Only the smoking.
None of my business but it took him away too soon.
The damn cigarette he always had in his mouth, all the time unless he was singing, then it was in his hand.
@@nbenefiel I wish it had been a joint.
@@namcat53 I'm thinking it was, look at his glassy eyes.
The great Dan Ar Bras, played with Stivell, well worth a listen.

Somewhere between dour and cool, funny stuff
Short lived lineup, Peggy is very impressive as ever
His responsivness with Swarb, senses...
Suberb bass player.. Such talent in that band with every line up
Peggy is a very lucky bass player in this band, drums & electric gits are always restrained, so much more potential for bass
Dave Pegg amazing musician .

Great bass player,class sound,
Saw them at Glastonbury in 1971. They had the whole crowd doing English folk dances. Best festival I ever went to. It was magic.
trying to learn both those tunes on the fiddle = hen's march and 4 poster bed. now I know how they're meant to sound!
Norway rocking!!
So this is August in Norway.
Dave Pegg was an underrated bassist.
Oddly enough, the Gottle album sessions saw the return of Simon Nicol to the fold after 'five years off for good behaviour' ...
What a wild crowd!!
Sloth: hell of a bass solo by Peggy

I saw that tour at the Berklee in Boston

I never saw him without a cigarette in his mouth.
Drums need to come up in the mix.
Roger Burridge is a great fiddler!
Never really understood this line up...2 fiddles when Swarb was more than capable and someone on the old Joanna...Bob Brady..I mean why?
Yes the two fiddles make absolutely no sense. With Swarb in the band, who wants to listen to anybody else?
So many Norwegian looking dudes in this audience.
Swarbrick using an echoplex?
I LOVE IT
Help me: peg on bass, swAbrik on fiddle, mattocks on drums (?), Simon on guitar (?), and who is on keyboArds?
It's all in the description!
💖
Is that Simon on second fiddle?
Putting an advert in the middle of Sloth should be punishable by death lol

Bob Brady, Roger Burridge were new then!
In this clip does Simon look like Rik Mayall?
Simon is not in this lineup, I can only assume you mean Roger Burridge.
Australian???????????? They are from Muswell Hil, London!!!

aye get yirr cagoules aff and jig. and dae it in jig time!
With such a fun song (the hens march), I can only guess most of the straight-faced audience had spent too many hours there previously, or were soaking wet
They're also Norwegian 😛
tbh not that much different to British folk audiences ... unless it's an actual dance.
@@andrewwigglesworth3030 they were probably suffering a delayed bout of arctic seasonal affective disorder
@@andrewwigglesworth3030 Peggy's bass solo has em totally confused, thinkn why stay here, lets go home & eat some fish

Stop smoking Swarb!
Tbh I’d feel a bit exposed in those dungarees with my ass hanging out.

Dave second only to Warren Ellis as far as fiddle players in my opinion
I love Swarbrick... but he does look like Bilbo Baggins with a raging nicotine addiction.
Bilbo!
