There was something about the very early 70’s that seems to represent an idyllic situation. The music, fashions, filming style and general ambiance inspires a longing feeling, in me anyway. Realists would probably tell me it wasn’t all that great when you were there.
It WAS great back then it was my happy childhood days i now feel lost in this world and wish i had was back there. As this world now seems full of hate misery and greed or perhaps its just me but thats how i see it 😢
The frame was steady: Latin America was torture, The us was the boss, Russia was a lie (even than) and we where rich. How much space for joy do you need?
Impressive performance. Dave S. is of course a master, both on violin and mandolin (same tuning), but to see bassplayer Dave Pegg do these not-too-easy tunes so effortlessly! is amazing.
Peggy himself joked about him being a true bass player since he always used a pick. But not only he played mandolin brilliantly, but also guitar and some viola - if I'm not wrong - and sang really fine. Most of these guys were stunningly versatile performers, similar to Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull or Genesis.
This has to be the hardest medley of mandolin tunes to play at the tempo these guys are playing. It's over 6 minutes on the Full House recording! I've tried a number of times to play along with the recording on Full House and can't play all the way through without tripping up especially on their version of Carolan's Concerto with the trick timing at the end. Even when I know it's coming I still forget. These guys are playing in unison and harmony like it's easy as falling off a log! Thompson in his book Beeswing commented about how Swarb would go crazy up-tempo on these fiddle tunes and he would struggle to play something meaningful while keeping up with the breakneck speed. They were so damned good indeed.
I started playing (or trying to play) the mandolin not too long ago. I hear things like this and think "hmm, maybe after I've played for, say, thirty years or so I'll be able to play half this well." Then I remember that I'm 63. 😭
@@thereunionparty She was before my time & the lineup was very different, but yes, I see what you mean. Swarb is essential in a classic lineup but he was still playing 'tame' in folk outfits then, rather than 'dirty' as he described the attraction of FP

Within six months Richard Thompson was gone. I was lucky I caught them live in Edinburgh just a few weeks before he left.

Remembering Swarb on what would have been his 81st Birthday today.🙏❤️🎻
Still awesome after 52 years
Drumming is fantastic!!
Thanks so much to the uploader. These early live Fairport videos are an absolute treasure.
My most favourite version of Carolan's Concerto
Love it how Swarb turns up the volume, followed by a cheeky grin! 😁
This really looks like a deleted scene of Bilbo Baggins birthday party from Lord of the Rings. Fabulous mandolin playing.
They were just so damn good!
when music was music x
Timeless. What a band. Can someone walk through the equalizer and do right to drum n base?
Fabulous
Richard Thompson with long hair!!!
Dave Pegg with hair!
Outstanding performance by 1st rate musicians.
Musica divina da una band divina

Divna kantri muzika
My original Full House has Walk Awhile timed at 9 minutes and Sloth at 3 minutes
I would like to see it.
Incomparable.
Can someone name all the tunes in this medley?
This is what i found so far…
Miss Susan Cooper
The Friar's Britches/Frieze Breeches
The Sport Of The Chase
Carolan's Concerto
They missed a chunk, but I forgive them! Funky drum solo from DM
Fabulous Pegg and Swarbrick; it's not even their "normal" instrument.
Are there any other clips from this gig or same time ?
I was thinking the same thing.
@@melysmelys2622 there are 4 or 6 clips I came across eventually from this gig, no links (sorry)
@@TimLondonGuitarist I found 'Now Be Thankful' earlier. I think it's from the same gig.
@@melysmelys2622 with Swarb singing, fantastic ! I was around in Cropredy early 70 s, that was the best lineup: Dave x 3 & Simon
@@TimLondonGuitarist Wish I could have seen it.
Damn Simon switched to bass and Dave on mandolin
Can someone name all the players in this clip? Would love to know.
Violin (Short guy) - Dave Swarbrick
Violin (Tall dude) - Dave Pegg
Guitar (Wavey hair) - Simon Nicol
Guitar (Curly hair) - Richard Thompson
Drums - Dave Mattacks
@@zenshen1567 Mandolins, not violins, you mean, I think.
This is the classic line up, in their prime, Richard Thompson left very soon after
@@TimLondonGuitarist The classic line up contains Sandy Denny surely?
