The intensity of everyone's performance far outweighs in efefct any 'heaviness' that any other band would bring to the sound. Thompson's playing is unique and, no doubt, the next night the solo would have been entirely different again. Fairport at this time didn't do gigs, they gave masterclasses.
i am nick. amelia is my daughter. swarb was not only an incredible fiddle payer but a great voice. too bad he smoked and then maybe he would still be w/us
Liege and Leif followed by Full House... Has any band ever had two such strong albums back to back? Especially with Sandy leaving after the first one... Sloth is one of my favourite tracks of all time...
And what’s more than a bit astounding, in retrospect, is that the pair of albums that preceded those two are probably even better. “What We Did on Our Holidays” and “Unhalfbricking” are, for my money, the best LPs Fairport ever made.
I’ve never heard the band pronounce the name of this song before - I’ve always thought of it as rhyming with “cloth”. To think I’ve been pronouncing it wrong all these years!
I messed up. This comment was for easy rider cover hendrix. Jimi's live tone. Like randy Hanson, Hendrix devotee. Nobody does 1983 merman should turn to be like randy. This sounds live Hendrix similar to Woodstock, or the one in Hawaii. I'm not big fan of billy cox on bass though. Although live concert film during (Noel and Mitch)isn't the best evidence. I've heard to many stories from people who seen Hendrix. Their storys vary but usually go like this, "The first time they seen Jimi Hendrix mind blowing, sayin they'ed haven't seen anything like it since. (Elton John also said this during interview 2011 2012? (When Elton john recruited the two cello players into his band. Fleetwood Mac, Beatles, cream, rolling stones etc. The best experience was seeing noel n mitch with jimi. Tightest with Hendrix My second reason for not appreciating jimi's army buddy billy cox has to do with isle of wight. At the end (sometime between the last two songs) Hendrix is not having good show, tired. Jimi gives billy heads up, signaling billy to come up front play, like 'show you're stuff'. Jimi would stand back by Mitch break for minute. Billy cox wired, chewing gum 100 miles hr. Billy acknowledges Jimi clearly. (Once you see this, its not hard to find) Billy doest want to come forward. He just chews gum looking at Hendrix, "I'm good, I don't want too solo front stage." Their expressions are clear .If this happened with noel Jimi could walk off stage for minute, come back when noel finished. There were times noel and Mitch played themselves. Not often, giving Jimi short break. I hate this fucking phone
Obviously Thompson and Swarb get the limelight, but, by God, that Mattacks lad could play a bit.
5 guys. 60% of them named Dave (Mattacks, Swarbrick and Pegg). When Richard Thompson left in 1971, 75% of the band was named Dave.
When Jet Harris and Tony Meehan were replaced in the Shadows 75% were called Brian (Bennett, Locking and Rankin-Hank Marvin's real name)
@@hertstraveller 50% of Roxy Music were called Brian. Eno blames that for his split !
Surprising Simon didn't change his name to Dave, he must've felt very alienated
Can we call you Bruce - just to keep it clear? 😜
My kind of comment! When I first saw the Pousette-Dart Band in the early 1970s, they were made up of Jon Pousette-Dart, John Troy and John Curtis.

Love Fairport ever since I first saw them in Epping in the late 60's, 73 now. Oh and Sandy Denny had the most beautiful voice I ever heard,
It took them only a 17 miles drive, they lived in Little Hadham than.
@@user-to9mm5cy6m All of the band live in Little Hadham? I know it well.
Every man here is a treasure
Swarb makes this into something special with his dulcet vocals and mysterious, ominous violin.....
Never a better guitarist than Richard Thompson.
Gotta “love” the direction - at the height of RT’s solo, he’s the only one NOT shown.
@@jonathanroberts8981 playing that Strat before Jimi made it cool
No better.
@@cooporlando they actually played a few shows & jams with Hendrix according to richards latest book
Thank you.

Love
Such great stuff they were doing back then, and so young too...
How I love seeing such a young Richard Thompson! Of all the wonderful songs he's written in his career, this is most certainly in the top five!
Simply amazing!
Nice to see this kickass performance. Real nice.
Amazing performance from this Fairport line-up !!!
Simon Nichol is a great guitar player. Yes, I know who is who here.
Magnificent.
Nice harmonics!
Pure magic.
And look at all that lovely hair on Richard! I used to have hair too! (And I still have several . . . )

3 strong albums, I thought the one before Liege & Leif was awesome also, A Sailors Life is worth the album alone.
For me those two albums are Fairport Convention. There was lots of other good work but those two albums ...
Has any band had two such strong albums back to back? Is that a rhetorical question, coz if not the answer is obviously yes
And what’s more than a bit astounding, in retrospect, is that the pair of albums that preceded those two are probably even better. “What We Did on Our Holidays” and “Unhalfbricking” are, for my money, the best LPs Fairport ever made.
I love this Fairport lineup.
Without Sandy Denny?
@@Luigi-xt1ct I love the lineup with Sandy, too, and Fotheringay. I saw Fairport when she rejoined around 1974, they were wonderful.
@@Luigi-xt1ct Classic Full House line up.What's not to like?
Murderer's row of talented musicians, even without Sandy
@@bobgreen623 Me too. Their gig at the Theatre Royal, London in December 1974 was the best I've ever seen.
Odd how in those days Dave Pegg had a vocal mic and Simon didn't. Wonder when exactlt Simon realised he had a very good singing voice?
Wow these guys were amazing
One of Richard's Greatest Songs...
You forgot Dave Swarbrick. He and Richard composed the song and both created, performing the song, a tension I never heard before.
This is the classic fp lineup, but it didn't last long: Thompson left soon after this
Thanks for uploading. I miss Sandy but nevertheless magical.
Richard Thompson must have been at maximum hair then.
Heard them at Narawhahia Pop Festival before Black Sabbath
Fairport and Sabbath on the same bill!
That was lucky. You wouldn't have been able to hear them after Black Sabbath.
'folk prog'
I’ve never heard the band pronounce the name of this song before - I’ve always thought of it as rhyming with “cloth”. To think I’ve been pronouncing it wrong all these years!
There's a live performance where Swarbrick introduces the song - and RT corrects his pronuncation just as you have!
@@norahollywood Well, if they couldn’t agree amongst themselves, I guess I can pronounce it however I like.😀
@@lindsayheywood7195 exactly. I don't even know if it's a joke that when he corrects him!
What does it matter, both pronunciations are correct, depends on whether you are discussing the animal or the deadly sin
what can you say........magic, i guess
Pure magic.
For me one of the greastest songs ever. Such a tension.
Yes.
DM.
Vocal mixing not great, but this is a very good version of one of my favourite songs.
Fair point but I love the rawness of the vocals. And the final verses sound awesome.
Is there a version sung by Sandy?
Could not be good or even better.
Nope, written after she left the band (although she came for a second term)
A good version, but somehow more mellow than the album version. I want to see a really heavy version, ideally with Gerry Conway on drums.
Does nothing me after sandy.
Why are they singing about Justin Long?
