I grew up with Gene in the early 80's when he dated my older sister. He used to come over and play my cheap $200 drumset and crack my cymbals with 1B drumsticks. He got me into all the good local bands including Great White, Dokken, Metallica, Slayer etc... I used to go see him when he was in Dark Angel and remember him starting out with a Tama set. He was a huge influence on me back then and now. I remember him always being sober and he was also a good pitcher and 1st baseman in junior high. Pretty cool to see him now on YT.
Great to see Gene looking healthy. He is a legend. I still love his Dark Angel Leave Scars album and as much as his drumming is steller, I liked he lyrics even better.
I saw him play with Death in San Francisco in 1993. He was using a Pearl Custom Z kit. 4 rack toms, 1 floor, double bass with all Paiste Cymbals. He was an incredible, precise MACHINE.
@Drumeo This is one of my favorite videos you guys have put out. I love hearing about how and why drummers go about using the gear they sue and Gene gave some really insightful comments about his experiences with different companies. You guys should definitely do more of these!!
He never says anything is good or bad, just that a specific thing works for him. I like the idea he implies that whatever works for you is good. It's the man that makes the kit, not the kit that makes the man.
I remember Gene played a few songs at Death- To- All (DTA) concert in Seattle. Obituary and Massacre were there as well. 2014. Got to see Gene with Dark Angel at 2018 California Deathfest, with Sinister, Cancer, Skinless. \m/
For me this big dude as he called himself is one of the greatest drummers out there and thanks Gene ! No triggers! I’m not really keen on triggers either but in today’s extreme metal , it seems that certain techniques cannot be really useful without those devices . Gene makes everything so simple that's absurd to see how difficult is to okay like he does....... I really need to buy his DVD! I actually would love to ask him what's the best technique to be fast but accurate and to make blast - beats sounding hard without triggers? You know, like old school, Steve Asheim, Mitch Harris, Pete " Comando" Sandoval and those guys.
I still use my Pearl Session from 1994 & the tone I get from the toms are huge. They sound like mountains being played. Every show I get to use them, which means local because I can't bring them when touring Europe, Canada the West Coast etc., obviously. When recording they are again so massive they add weight to notes within a riff. Live locally, again the comments are always positive. Other drummers who ask to use them, same thing. Kick drums are boomy like cannons going off. I only use the Aquarian heads that have that very light strip of foam. I like them nice & open. I've been using the brass Pearl free-floater as well since its has to be since mid 2000s? It cuts through, but doesn't give that overwhelming ring I have heard from other companies. Sabian as well. My ride is from 1990. With all the smoke, grime & sweat it has a unique sound to it I'll never stray from. My crashes, china, hats are all Sabian. They're the only ones I have ever used & ever will. You don't marry a super model only to cheat with Bette Midler, know what I'm saying?
I switched to those Pear Redline Eliminators because of Danny Carey and I LOVE them. I even have 2 Danmar beaters on them. I came back to them from my Tricks because they're so good. Put a Trick drive shaft on them now and it's transformed them into the perfect pedal for me.
I got that same 8" brass free floater back in 95 in south florida at a place called music arts and entertainment.. The mahogany shell also came with it.. 400 bux.. Had it ever since and its my one and only and im so glad i have it cause no other snare i tried even came close.. wait i did get another one finally.. its the exact sane free floater from pearl only its frkn aluminum!..lol.. how awesome is that..thanks Gene..You rule
Actually, years ago gene said the propeller was left in a room belonging to Chuck Schuldiner. After he passed away Gene thought it would be in poor taste to contact Chuck's family and say Hey can I have my propeller back!? I honestly don't think they would have minded but that's where it is.
jeffrey jones Clearly not. Still have two pairs that haven’t broken. Also, the new sigs are thicker. But I guess you’ll never be successful enough to even have a chance to fail lol
jeffrey jones LOL Easy there captain virgin neck beard who loves the chubbies. My profile pic is a character first of all, not even a real photo. Secondly im a guy. Sorry. Thirdly, you’re still a nobody, who cant even play most of Portnoys songs lol.
jeffrey jones Actually its because I use proper technique. Not a caveman who has to strong arm everything because unlike you, I dont have one dimensional dynamics lol. Also, every fast drummer plays thin sticks. But im guess by your level of stupidity, you wouldnt know, because you’re not good. Go play some top 40 music.
2 nerds arguing about whose better at drums when neither have any videos on their channels. Oh the irony! I will say Jeff you might be better than the dork with his imaginary girlfriend pic because anyone with half a brain knows Portnoy is one of the most overrated drummers of all time.
I feel the same way about the Pearl Eliminator pedals. I bought them brand new on my birthday in 2003, after trying out the Tama, DW, and Yamaha top models, and the Pearl was just like butter and blew them all away. I've used the same pedal for 19 years, thousands of gigs, hundreds of thousands of hours of practice. Never let me down. Never broke a spring. Threw them around. Never cleaned em. Never greased em. Abused and mistreated and still play like the first day I bought em. Obviously there's been a lot of technological advancements and new brands that have came out since 2003, so I recently bought the Trick pedals to try out without testing them first (no one keeps them in stock in the music stores). If they don't turn out like I plan, I'll just sell them. I will never part with my Pearl pedals though, even if I do like the Tricks. That Pearl is just indestructible. It's made me a lot of money and paid for all of my equipment 100 times over.
I still have my pearl export kit i bought back in 1998 or 99 but i have converted it to an ekit with mesh heads, rubber E-cymbals and triggers.I did this because i live in an apartment now and its the only way i can play drums at all anymore.I hate the small pads other edrums have so its nice to play on my pearl kit.
Vent holes on the snare head allow the air to escape a little quicker than normal which will dry out the sound. 🤘 Surprised Gene isn't wearing his boots.
Considering how versatile Travis is on the kit, I'm still kinda shocked they haven't organised a lesson with him (I understand that both Drumeo and Travis are pretty busy but it would be amazing to see it happen)
Agreed! Travis’s setup is mind-blowing, and the fact that he plays thin crashes with those huge sticks without destroying them is pretty impressive! He also makes me want to play double hats so badly, but I can’t seem to commit to that with my setup given that I like my ride right above the kick, and I tend to punch the right hats if I play that ride, and I don’t like putting that ride to the right of the floor tom either (I play a 24 on the right and 18” ride on the left). Maybe a remote hat will do well in the future if money allows lol
That's how he started using twin hats, he started with a Mangini style hat system (x hats) where the left foot opened and closed the right and vice versa. *Only reason why I suggested having Travis on was because Gene does the same thing as Travis with his cymbals, low on the left and high on the right.*
OH NO!!,,Was waiting for a solo at the end...gutted... Oh, while im here, Get James Stewart from VADER, one of my fave drummers, awesome drummer, proper fast, tight, mind blowing technical grooves, yet with the brutal edge to his style.
Brandon Crooms I thought the same thing when he said that. I was all "wait...what?" Rosewood is primarily a guitar wood. But no foul. Gene is still a legend...
@@PearlDrumsUS One overlooked series, while it may not be the most expensive, is the Export series. I swore by them while I played but if I went back to playing I would definitely use them again.

I disapprove of the Speed Cobra in the thumbnail, when Gene plays the Eliminator Redlines :D
Did the Graphic Designer get fired yet?
Same here
Great to see Gene looking healthy. He is a legend. I still love his Dark Angel Leave Scars album and as much as his drumming is steller, I liked he lyrics even better.
I met Gene as he was getting off Testament’s tour bus in Dublin. He was absolutely super cool. Awesome, awesome drummer. 🤘🤘
He radiates so much kindness and humility. What a great dude is Gene Hoglan. :)
super useful... what a lovely, articulate, cool dude
Agreed. Met him at The Channel,Boston,Ma years ago. Told me he only took one lesson. Great guy.
Hell yeah 😎 agree 💯. OutlawX Respect Gene Hoglan. Always have since the 90s
I saw him play with Death in San Francisco in 1993. He was using a Pearl Custom Z kit. 4 rack toms, 1 floor, double bass with all Paiste Cymbals. He was an incredible, precise MACHINE.
LUCKY!!!! I can’t believe you saw the original individual tour!
Gene sounds like a teddy bear, but then he plays and turns into a monster!
Lolz so true
Best ever description of gene
More of these. I love gear and hearing about what people use and why.
Gene is like the bob ross of drumming
He makes no mistakes just happy accidents?
Dude... he really is, holy shit.
“We’ll just throw in a happy little double bass pattern.”
He is....a happy little double slap
Always a pleasure to watch
What a legend seems like such a nice guy.what a kit and gene is looking in great shape.
Justin Small totally agree! I was blown away to see how much weight he's lost. Major kudos to him...
Unlike Dino Cazares who looks like he doesn't fire band members - he eats them.
I can see why he and Devin get along so well, they both seem super fun yet polite guys, with a lot of light-hearted passion for their craft
Love this video! Gene loves talking about his drums and doesn't stop talking about them. He could go on for days lol! Legend
Hearing gene talk gear and sound is inspiring, this man is all about the music and its great. Thank you for the rundown
He seems like a cool guy. Great kit run down as well, very detailed and informative, hate when drummers know nothing about their kit.
Honestly could listen to Gene talk for days about drums. Such a great communicator.
This was awesome!! I love hearing the stories as to why drummers choose their gear specifically, I would love to see more of these!!

What an awesome view of the drumming scene.
Love the lesson at the start about how don't make things any harder on your self then you have to *nods*
You should do these with every drummer you have, love these types 🔥
Very good endorsement vídeo. Points for pearl and Gene.
It's like he talks in rythms...awesome drummer, huge fan and he seems like such a cool dude.
His interviews are just as entertaining as his drumming.

Shout-out to Gene's funky socks

Pretty important drum.

Get James Stewart from VADER, one of my fave drummers, awesome drummer, proper fast, tight, mind blowing technical grooves, yet with the brutal edge to his style.
Same bummed he didn't play the kit! Just heard of James the other day, badass and POWERFUL drummer.
@@DudelyDuWrong
Totally agree, .
awesome I got Black Pearl's, 18 peace drum kit, not all set up, still learning,
Pearl uses African Mahogany in the Reference Series. Not rosewood.
That's correct… here are the full shell specs:
10” tom: 6-ply 7.5mm shell with rounded 45° bearing edges
12” tom: 6-ply 100% maple 7.5mm shell with rounded 45° bearing edges
14” tom: 6-ply 7.5mm shell with fully rounded bearing edges
18” floor tom: 8-ply 10mm shell with fully rounded bearing edges
Both 22” & 24” bass drums: 8-ply 10mm shell with fully rounded bearing edges
Brandon Crooms I thought the same thing when he said that. I was all "wait...what?" Rosewood is primarily a guitar wood. But no foul. Gene is still a legend...
So tama uses endangered wood! Thats great. Awesome.

Amen on the 24” kicks! Rocking a 24” x 14” and absolutely love it! Cuts well with my loud-ass band haha
Nice video, very informative!
Gene is a funny, humble and incredible drummer!
One of my favourite drummers including Mr's Gavin Harrison Simon Philipps Tim Alexander and Wil Calhoun
If you closely notice Evans G2 heads have 1 tiny hole in the head like the ST Dry does with a bunch of them.
