About Gene:
Gene Hoglan is one of the most creative and technically proficient drummers in the heavy-metal music scene since the 1980s. As the godfather of double bass and metal drumming, Gene has graced stages and studios around the world with metal heavyweights like Death, Testament, Strapping Young Lad, Dark Angel, Devin Townsend, Fear Factory, and Dethklok, which has earned him a spot in the annals of heavy-metal drumming as one the all-time best.
I disapprove of the Speed Cobra in the thumbnail, when Gene plays the Eliminator Redlines :D
Did the Graphic Designer get fired yet?
He radiates so much kindness and humility. What a great dude is Gene Hoglan. :)
I saw him play with Death in San Francisco in 1993. He was using a Pearl Custom Z kit. 4 rack toms, 1 floor, double bass with all Paiste Cymbals. He was an incredible, precise MACHINE.
LUCKY!!!! I can’t believe you saw the original individual tour!
More of these. I love gear and hearing about what people use and why.
Gene sounds like a teddy bear, but then he plays and turns into a monster!
Lolz so true
Best ever description of gene
Gene is like the bob ross of drumming
He makes no mistakes just happy accidents?
Dude... he really is, holy shit.
“We’ll just throw in a happy little double bass pattern.”
He is....a happy little double slap
Always a pleasure to watch
Hearing gene talk gear and sound is inspiring, this man is all about the music and its great. Thank you for the rundown
Honestly could listen to Gene talk for days about drums. Such a great communicator.
this dude is such a solid human being. fucking love gene hoglan
Loved the video! I like how this guys speaks , the way he expresses himself, he looks like a really polite person too
For me this big dude as he called himself is one of the greatest drummers out there and thanks Gene ! No triggers! I’m not really keen on triggers either but in today’s extreme metal , it seems that certain techniques cannot be really useful without those devices .
Gene makes everything so simple that's absurd to see how difficult is to okay like he does....... I really need to buy his DVD! I actually would love to ask him what's the best technique to be fast but accurate and to make blast - beats sounding hard without triggers? You know, like old school, Steve Asheim, Mitch Harris, Pete " Comando" Sandoval and those guys.
Not to mention the man's a legend! I love Pearl Drums, too!
I still use my Pearl Session from 1994 & the tone I get from the toms are huge. They sound like mountains being played. Every show I get to use them, which means local because I can't bring them when touring Europe, Canada the West Coast etc., obviously. When recording they are again so massive they add weight to notes within a riff. Live locally, again the comments are always positive. Other drummers who ask to use them, same thing. Kick drums are boomy like cannons going off. I only use the Aquarian heads that have that very light strip of foam. I like them nice & open. I've been using the brass Pearl free-floater as well since its has to be since mid 2000s? It cuts through, but doesn't give that overwhelming ring I have heard from other companies. Sabian as well. My ride is from 1990. With all the smoke, grime & sweat it has a unique sound to it I'll never stray from. My crashes, china, hats are all Sabian. They're the only ones I have ever used & ever will. You don't marry a super model only to cheat with Bette Midler, know what I'm saying?
He seems like such an awesome, friendly and knowledgeable guy. I would love to spend a few days under his wing. This breakdown is awesome.
I switched to those Pear Redline Eliminators because of Danny Carey and I LOVE them. I even have 2 Danmar beaters on them. I came back to them from my Tricks because they're so good. Put a Trick drive shaft on them now and it's transformed them into the perfect pedal for me.
Have the Trick shaft on mine as well!
You should do these with every drummer you have, love these types 🔥
Love this guy! I've followed him since the Dark Angel days. He blew my mind then and never disappoints.
Fo Smith DARK ANGEL🤘
What an awesome view of the drumming scene.
I still have my pearl export kit i bought back in 1998 or 99 but i have converted it to an ekit with mesh heads, rubber E-cymbals and triggers.I did this because i live in an apartment now and its the only way i can play drums at all anymore.I hate the small pads other edrums have so its nice to play on my pearl kit.
I sold mine when my back and shoulder started giving gip.
I have one from to my knowledge the 80's..
Pearl uses African Mahogany in the Reference Series. Not rosewood.
That's correct… here are the full shell specs:
10” tom: 6-ply 7.5mm shell with rounded 45° bearing edges
12” tom: 6-ply 100% maple 7.5mm shell with rounded 45° bearing edges
14” tom: 6-ply 7.5mm shell with fully rounded bearing edges
18” floor tom: 8-ply 10mm shell with fully rounded bearing edges
Both 22” & 24” bass drums: 8-ply 10mm shell with fully rounded bearing edges
Brandon Crooms I thought the same thing when he said that. I was all "wait...what?" Rosewood is primarily a guitar wood. But no foul. Gene is still a legend...
So tama uses endangered wood! Thats great. Awesome.
@@PearlDrumsUS One overlooked series, while it may not be the most expensive, is the Export series. I swore by them while I played but if I went back to playing I would definitely use them again.
NERD!!!!!
His interviews are just as entertaining as his drumming.
I love my Pearl MMPs...staying strong since 2007 :) Thanks Pearl!
I feel the same way about the Pearl Eliminator pedals. I bought them brand new on my birthday in 2003, after trying out the Tama, DW, and Yamaha top models, and the Pearl was just like butter and blew them all away. I've used the same pedal for 19 years, thousands of gigs, hundreds of thousands of hours of practice. Never let me down. Never broke a spring. Threw them around. Never cleaned em. Never greased em. Abused and mistreated and still play like the first day I bought em.
Obviously there's been a lot of technological advancements and new brands that have came out since 2003, so I recently bought the Trick pedals to try out without testing them first (no one keeps them in stock in the music stores). If they don't turn out like I plan, I'll just sell them. I will never part with my Pearl pedals though, even if I do like the Tricks. That Pearl is just indestructible. It's made me a lot of money and paid for all of my equipment 100 times over.
It's like he talks in rythms...awesome drummer, huge fan and he seems like such a cool dude.
I got that same 8" brass free floater back in 95 in south florida at a place called music arts and entertainment.. The mahogany shell also came with it.. 400 bux.. Had it ever since and its my one and only and im so glad i have it cause no other snare i tried even came close.. wait i did get another one finally.. its the exact sane free floater from pearl only its frkn aluminum!..lol.. how awesome is that..thanks Gene..You rule
OH NO!!,,Was waiting for a solo at the end...gutted...
Oh, while im here,
Get James Stewart from VADER, one of my fave drummers, awesome drummer, proper fast, tight, mind blowing technical grooves, yet with the brutal edge to his style.
Same bummed he didn't play the kit! Just heard of James the other day, badass and POWERFUL drummer.
@@DudelyDuWrong
Totally agree, .
Amazing to get into gene’s head! What a genius! Thanks guys!
Great detailed rundown, and the socks were an excellent touch 💪🏽
I have those same hats. Best Hats I've ever used or heard!!!
LOL- Gene keeping it old-school with the coke nails. LEGEND !!
Love the socks Gene! Great set up though. Great video
Gene is a funny, humble and incredible drummer!
One of my favourite drummers including Mr's Gavin Harrison Simon Philipps Tim Alexander and Wil Calhoun
Why was his snare drum completely overlooked?
Pretty important drum.
Love ya Gene 🤘
awesome I got Black Pearl's, 18 peace drum kit, not all set up, still learning,
Gene is a geek. Love it.
this guy seems like one of the the best human around
Such a cool & very intelligent guy. 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Gene saw jume live at a drum festival . Great player
GENE HOGLAN for fuckin president!!🤘🏻😎
Genera Dry snare heads also have holes in them. the holes are supposed to control overtones and i's what gives the had the dry sound. I think all their snare head labeled "dry" are vented but not 100% sure.
Love this guy
I love this man
One of my heroes, I've been a huge fan since individual thought patterns blew my mind. I wish paiste could have done better by gene, his albums with death featured paiste cymbals, and sounded much better.
He seems like such a cool guy
The pedals don't look like demon drives. They look like being eliminators red line
Gene is the best!!!!
I just noticed gene has the guitarist's nails on his left hand that's kind cool
Gene is great. You should invite Richard Christy too.
What a cool dude
13:35 some let off a loose one
Did I miss him talking about his triggers haha. I need the info!
Pearl drums is best. Pearl reference is the best of the best
shark man the kit I'm playing now is pearl reference its my dads I just got into drumming this year. Can't imagine any better sound
Yamaha >>>>>>> pearl
Pearl >>>>>>>>>>> Yamaha
Aaron Allen nope
Agree that Pearl is the pinnacle of drums but masters custom is my preferred series. Mapex & Gretch are tied for my 2nd fave drums. Sorry DW lovers. I've just never been a fan...
gene looks really handsome wow grate job on the vid and waight loss gene much love from NH usa!
Remember in 2007 I was playing in LA with Resurrection At this metal festival! Gene came out he was backstage hanging with me right before I went on stage! I was ready to go on and Gene looks at my fancy pedals and goes! You like those! I’m like ya! He goes !!! I hate those! I won’t mention the pedal company! But it was funny!
9:10 The best metal musicians all sound like this
You guys should try and get some lessons with Taylor Hawkins
Did you guys forget to write the pedal type on description area?
Vazgen Oganes Pearl Eliminator Redline
I have found hihats with a great closed sound, don’t necessarily sound great when splashed or played slightly open and vice versa, thinner cymbals have a slightly less pronounced closed stick sound.
Would love to know the snare side head. Great video.
I've watched this video over 10 times just listening to gene talking lol
Love those vocabulary punches 🤣
are bottom heads also G2 ?
Gene sounds like a extremely nice guy
Tbh I kinda felt the tension in that room…
You cant not love Gene, he's like everybodys crazy, teddy bearish uncle!
Love Ash and Hoglan! Also Drumeo, is Ash only on your channel when Gene is? Would like to hear more from this guy. His metal drummer perspective is nice to hear.
nah man I got lots of vids on drum

Nothing more metal than purple Argyle socks !
Yay
I can’t find those cymbals on the front of his kit not the crash’s but the small ones at all does anybody know what they are
I wonder what cams he uses with the Eliminators. Probably the black cams if its out of the box settings.
Looks like it, going by the bit that sticks out at the top (which is neither white nor yellow).

God
but what about the propeller? ; )
I bought darkness descends on cassette in 88'
tocar que é bom...
Agree Evans genera dry...best snare head 😏
i have that set
Dude very based of Revo's drummer to rock a Formulas shirt for this my bands cowriter also has that shirt lol
I love how he occasionally talks like Bubbkes from TPB 😂
Nicest guy ever, want to have a beer with him.
Animal🤘
Why does he have a long uncut thumbnail?
He uses it as a threading so he can apply oil to his tension rods.
Did he say 24 by 60
24*16
Two floor tom party!
dear lord those socks
Thank God I wasn't the only one seeing those
Shame this kit won't be made anymore. No rosewood anymore because rosewood is endangered. Those mini chinas do sound link mini chinas. I was expecting something different when he was describing them. He is such a nice guy very cool.
It uses African Mahogany not Rosewood lol, they’ve always used Mahogany
Hey guys m from India and I'm looking for a cymbals set for my new set.. Can u help me out please
thought the reference series were birch, maple and African mahogany?
But he do not talk about trigger setings!
He uses the alesis dm5 module with roland triggers. He detunes the trigger lvl to -4 to add more beaf to them. Its on his first dvd the atomic clock. Check it out
Metallexa326 I know the story, but i want ti see the deep setings, I have the D4 and i know about trigger , i just want to see him do it!
I thought he said he wasn’t using triggers anymore?
@ BuddhistDrummer: exactly, at 12:13 , he talks about triggers
He’s gotta be the nicest most innocent sounding guy in extreme metal.
Why's there a Speed Cobra in the thumbnail?
This ^^^
I hink he means HD dry..vented.. not st
hey rotters, hope you're doin well there daddio.
1:19 whole lotta Rosewood
Cesar Overmars
whole lotta damage !
He reminds me of Aaron Ra.
10:50 beard scratching sounds
Wow he is different from his character in the show dethklok
two metal guys we need on drumeo: Mario Duplantier and Kai Hahto
So far this guy even talking sounds good as opposed to tons of famous drummers
He’s like a drumming dictionary
