Gene Hoglan drum playthrough of Death's "The Philosopher" off the Individual Thought Patterns Album. From Gene's brand new DVD The Atomic Clock : The Clock Strikes Two.
"I remember on the 'adorable little riff tape' that Chuck sent me, this tune was pretty much ready to go. It didn't require any transposing on my part to make it any heavier."
"Now, this instance is possibly captured on the DVD, but as you may notice in the verses, I don't catch the hi-hat conventionally with my foot, I use my hands to catch it. I wanted to have the kick land under the snare yet still have the choked hi-hat on the same beat, and at that time, that kick drum would have been my left, which would obviously be my hi-hat choking foot. So, my only alternative was to do a hi-hat choke manually with my left hand. And you know what? In the long run, it probably didn't make a damn bit of difference. The hand chokes are not all that 'chokey', and the kick under the whole shebang doesn't really make it any more powerful.
Hey, remember when I said that I'm up for challenges? Apparently that runs to the 'self-inflicted' as well."
"The neato thing about this version is that I didn't even know that there was an extra two minutes of jam at the end until I'm getting filmed playing it! Apparently we played it that long on the original, but I definitely don't remember it. Hell, I'm too busy remembering Overactive Vaginas, Donald Tardy's and hi-hat chokings to remember long extendo-jams.
Again, there was no reviewing of anything before tracking the DVD, so on that filmed take, I'm actually surprised that this tune is not ending like, two bars after where the album's fade happens. Hence, me going way off the riff, 'cause with no click, there's really nothing to follow except for Chuck's random two-note progression. Ah well, warts & all is how I likes to brings it to ya. And don't forget, with zero prep either. Jeez Hoglan, get it together next time, will ya?"
The Wait is Over!
GENE HOGLAN's "The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two" DVD to be Released February 3, 2017
Featuring Interviews with Members of ANTHRAX, TESTAMENT and More!
GENE HOGLAN's highly-anticipated second DVD, The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two, is due to be released Feb. 3, 2017 and will feature the Clock himself breaking down some of his favorite beats, telling stories and playing along with tracks from several of his most legendary projects, including Strapping Young Lad, Testament and Death.

An impressive roster of high-caliber musicians also weigh in over the course of the feature, offering stories about Gene and their experiences working with him. Interviews include Scott Ian and Frank Bello of Anthrax, 3 Inches of Blood/Revocation's Ash Pearson, Jason Bittner of Shadows Fall, Chuck Billy, Alex Skolnick, and Eric Peterson of Testament, and more.
Featured Tracks:
Testament: "Rise Up," "Native Blood"

All audio was produced, engineered and mixed by Rob Shallcross with audio mastering from Greg Reely.
Gene Hoglan + Steve DiGorgio = the rhythm section from hell.

Chuck too
HE ABSOLUTELY IS!!!

To anyone wondering why one of Gene's nicknames is "The Atomic Clock", this man never misses a beat. He's a 300lbs human drum machine.
He's not 300 pounds he lost a lot of weight looking good now

The Neil Peart of Death Metal. This guy is a treasure!
wow, you aren't kidding!
For those who think Metal music is random noise without skills...
I miss Death so much...
mac tabut we all miss them
Have had this exact argument many times in life with the misinformed. Quality Metal is some of the most technical and artistic forms out there.
Eric Solis metal and classical are the hardest genres to play. They are also pretty similar
Who the fuck cares about those people??
@@panusalin2636 so if the jazz or funk are the most difficult genres so the jazz players can play Dream Theater, Lamb of god, etc. I don't think so, of course jazz is difficult but c'mon metal is enormus on styles and ways to play it.
Manager: So Mr. Hoglan, how many bands would you like to be in?
Gene Hoglan: yes!
Atleast 2
“Idk… 1?”
If only he stayed with Death for a couple more albums. Genes drumming and Chucks voice, one of the greatest things in metal ever
The drummer from albums scavenger of human sorrows also very good
IIRC He only missed out on their last album The Sound of Perseverance since he was having a kid (unless I'm thinking of another guy), he woulda recorded drums for it otherwise@@kennylanky1045
It's kinda weird hearing Chuck's voice and know he is not around anymore, it almost feels like he is alive still and just hasn't released a new album in a while, that's the kind of impact all bands should have.
Artists are kept alive through their legacies. Guys like Chuck, Dime, Peart, Burton, Rhodes etc. may be gone, but they'll always be around.
One of the most deservedly appreciated metal drummers of all time.
Don't think that is true. Everyone rates him.
thats not even remotely true, every metalhead holds Hoglan in high regard
@@eriond3701 Not me. He's not even playing in this video. It's an edited glamore shot of something he built in a DAW. Watch the ride keep going even though he's not playing it at 1:44.
@@redrick8900 than listen to his albums buddy, you shouldnt formulate an opinion based on a single video
@@eriond3701 His albums are built on a computer. He's pretending to play here and he clearly isn't.
Also, I've been watching Hoglan and his tutorials for years. I thought he was a good technical drummer that just sucked at serving the song. It turns out he isn't even that. Mike Portnoy is actually playing on his videos.
The fact that he can just stop the hi-hat with the same hand in the middle of the of everything else he's got going on.. it's another lever of expert. Hes on that Godlike status!
Fluidly awesome man....He makes it look like he's driving a city bus...next stop....goddam hell...
Ross Mclellan 😂😂
A city bus bro, no doubt!
lmao
For real. I just thought this... Gene makes this look like this is the easiest thing in the world... which is probably the hardest thing about it
LOL nice dude. Now I can't get that out of my head.
That crash mute underlining the bass at 03:39 is devine.
💯
For sure. Can’t stop enjoying
Chuck and Gene were two of the most talented and genuinely nice people in metal. Glad they collaborated.
He plays more a "drum melody" than a rythm. Awesome...
TheApp9 -Very “phrase oriented” drumming. Sounds organic and it speaks really well with Chuck’s musical essence by the time.
TheApp9 -Those drums speak for themselves.
yeah let the guitar rhythm and dont drown it.
DYNA KLO That's what the mix is for.
@Rocko Parker 'smarties'
It sounds organic because it sounds human and not predicatble 4/4 bom kah drumming.
Tomas from Meshuggah said,Gene is one of best drummers in the world ,enough said! :)
Putting Mike Portnoy in the same category as Gene Hoglan is pretty laughable I think... just my opinion ...
And Tomas Haake is one of the best drummers as well.
Add in Dominator, HellHammer & Inferno with Gene and a list is complete!
when THOMAS HAAKE calls you one of the best drummers in the world, you know your a good drummer
Most great drummers will praise other drummers. It’s sort of a professional courtesy, since a lot of these guys play festivals and wind up going on tour with each other at one time or another. Plus, I think that once you reach a certain level of expertise, that you become comfortable enough to acknowledge that other great professionals exist in your field.
Death is the NO.1 technical band of all time. their music still and will always be favourite amongst death metal listeners
Gene is one of the best metal drummer of all times. All hail the atomic clock.

It's so controlled and so locked in there, gene hoglan is probably one of the best metal drummers alive
Holy shit this is the first time i heard the ending of the song without the fade out, Chuck and Steve's dual guitar/bass solos are insane, why didn't this version end up on the album??? Great drumming too obviously, Gene is a master of his craft, but i can't stop listening to that outro
Been thinking the same thing. I feel cheated now listening to the album cut.
That's what I'm talking about it for years man! Daaat outro!
Because it's Gene, he's using the master track.
@@gravee.shindler8271 how do we get the master track?
@@Bartman61911 I BELIEVE this newer version with a clearer, but still fading, outro is on the remaster of ITP that was released a few years ago and can currently be heard on Spotify! As for the ACTUAL master? Arrrgh. Aside from here? I don't know? To the high seas of the internet!
I think that this álbum, recorded by Gene, Chuck, Andy and Steve was The most perfect álbum ever recorded in The heavy Music. Such a wonderfull players...The quality of those Words...The bass line...Everything is perfect.
That is a sweet kit. Death. A band with much meaning, the band that attached me to metal. Rest in Peace, Chuck. You are missed.
Perfect example why you don't need to be playing 280bmp start to finish to be heavy.
you dont even need 200 bpm..dynamic control, finesse, technique, musicality ,song playing thats all what you need. and the right sound for the right approach.

Nothing wrong with playing fast

Never heard the entire DiGiorgio vs. Hoglan vs. Schuldiner solo-jam in the end of the song (album version fades out on one of Chuck's chops)! So thanks a lot for the awesome perfomance and exclusive version of this outstanding Death classic!
Did that once and forgot to turn the volume down. Put on some Morbid Angel and yeah you can tell what happened next lol
Those last couple of minutes were out of this world for sure.

Immortal forèver ...
Yeah he’s amazing! Love your channel btw, the best reviews out there :)
just awesome he makes it look so easy with no effort 🤘🤘🤘
John blegen - Exactly! After listening and watching for about 30 seconds, I felt it necessary to leave a comment, essentially saying that while listening, you are thinking, 'this guy is a freaking man'. But then when you watch him play, he makes these insane drums parts looks so frigging easy that he isn't even going to break a sweat. The guy is beyond amazing. If I was in a hugely successful band, I would be taking secret lessons from Mr. Gene Hoglan. Actually, I wouldn't keep it as a secret, I would tell the whole world that I was taking lessons from THE Master, just because he should be getting SOOO much more credit than he does. His name should be a household name to the 'mainstream' crowd, not just our metal world. Gene, if you see this, you are the fucking man.
John blegen because he’s not human 🤫🤫
He's also been playing this song for over 20 years so he must have gotten it right can probably play it in his sleep for all we know
is like eating pancakes for hoglan now
Huh, I always wished to hear the complete bass/guitar outro without the fade-out, never imagined that my wish would come true tho. Nice one, Gene.
Same Here. When I was listening on CD, I would raise the volume slowly so that I could listen a little longer.
A class song preformed by class musicians.. Don't get any better R.I.P Chuck
Genes drumming is like a fine wine gets better with age
The ITP lineup was a dream team. It and symbolic still blows my mind.
beerhoven: There is absolutely no bullshiting with that statement.
How about Spiritual Healing?
Human was probably the dream team imo
I’ve always thought this as well! Steve and Gene in the same lineup is instantly awesome!
Hoglan is a metal legend, one of the best in the business. He makes difficult playing look effortless... 🤘
Not only is he a technical virtuoso, but the part is also very musical.
Individual Thought Patterns had the most talented version of Death that Chuck had ever assembled!
Chuck - Guitars, vocals
Andy LaRocque - Guitars
Steve DiGiorgio - Bass
Gene Hoglan - Drums
Aye great line up, a veritable super group of metal gods. Human has an insane line up as well. Sean Reinert's drumming is incredible!
2 are in TestamenT
The Symbolic line-up was amazing too.
Bless your soul for keeping Chuck's flame alive in our minds...
Never understood why this track fades so bloody early on the original recording, even on the anniversary re-release, it starts fading out at Chuck's first solo in the outro. Now finally I get to hear Chuck's and Steve's solos on top of Gene's awesome playing.
The most inspiring drummer. Symbolic has made me learn more about drumming than any other album. I feel really lucky of, despite I'm 42 years old, I was able to see Death playing live in Madrid. I think it could be 1995-96.
I could watch
Gene "The Great" Hoglan
play all day long.
SO AMAZING!!!
Death is the only band from my golden years that never ever fails to get my juices flowing when I run like a Heavy Metal lunatic in the darkness of the Swedish woodland. Partly because they never had the opportunity to release a lesser album due to natural causes.
Mattias Jansson I don't think they even would've released a smaller album, they were that good!
Mattias Jansson Chuck died a hero, never became the villain
To be fair Death broke up. Chuck was in Zero Tolerance when he passed :( RIP Chuck
Zachery Noland did not know that. Why did they break up
Well put! Cancer was like "now that we've reached the peak of musical achievement..."
R.I.P. Chuck, his absence sadly and silently speaks each day. Thanks for uploading this.

I just love the end of this song. With the wild fretless bass, crazy fast guitar and awesome drums. Gene Hoglan you are an amazing drummer so cool do see your amazing drumming and fantastic technic.
man did the Bass track come up front on this one!.the sound of that fretless bass sounds killer
Travis Sanders my exact thoughts. Spectacularly gorgeous!

I always had curiosity about how to play this song, due to the degree of difficulty. Spectacular Gene ...
What a great drummer!!!! He makes it seems so effortless that someone can even believe this is for a normal human being.
Met you at Bradford Rio with Chuck, bought you a double JD... Still after all this time... the world's greatest drummer period
Simply the best heavy metal drummer of all time
Gene deals massacre with his hands, what a talented and skilled drummer he is. Also made me pay attention on things I never did before on this great song. Ohhh what a blast would a brand new Death album would be right now 🤘🏾

Because of him, I respect any guy with a big belly!
He should form some band with Dino Cazares, coz he's got a big belly too. Oh wait

Best Metal Drummer ever, still alive.
3:11+I always loved the fade away outro on Philosopher. No need to increase the volume on the cd anymore to hear the last beats😁

More than 15 years later and I've actually never heard this song sound this good until listening to this. Is this an unreleased cut, a remaster, or something else? It sounds soooo good.
Sounds like an unedited cut-the trading off at the end goes a lot longer than the original-fine by me.
I think the drums are just loud in the mix and the fade out effect on the ending solos is turned off
You are MY DRUM HERO!
I love Gene. Meet him twice. Stand up dude. So kind and positive. I don’t fan boy when I meet musicians; I try to have candid conversations. In Las Vegas with Testament I told him I love Thought Patterns but Human is the best Death record and what Sean did for the band was pure magic. Gene elaborated on that comment and said he couldn’t agree more.
Gene has a complex and articulate style. More chops than a Saturday afternoon Bruce Lee flick marathon. He took Death in a precise and calculated direction that was perfect for the progression of the genre. I love his work in testament.
I love how a good drummer makes it look so easy , that’s when you really know it isn’t , your ears tell the story your eyes aren’t.
That was amazing! There's some beautiful parts: very creative and there is so many intricate and, even unnoticeable to the eye, and which makes it - well, you - stand out as one of the best metal drummers of all time. Thanks and I was very lucky to see the Death Legend's tour in London; that's, unfortunately, the closest I'll ever get to seeing, Chuck.
Cheers, man. :)
A must for all Death/Chuck Schuldiner fans also, song usually fades out way before minute marker 4:30 rolls around, so it's like hearing previously unreleased material, cool to hear those extra bits of soloing.
legit. this never ceases to amaze + entertain, since 93 or whenever the record came out. & u can really hear those sick bass solos in this mix.
