Great video! I would love to see behind the scenes of these lesson videos. Like Gene arriving in the studio..set up of his kit ... I mean I dont wanna miss a single second.
Hey man, big fan. I have a request. Probably should ask on your channel but is there anyway you can teach us non existence from SFU??? I'll play Raid shadow legends if you will.
I think what sets Gene apart is that he plays with such taste. So many drummers in the extreme genre (Death Metal, Metalcore, etc., etc.) sound like a drum machine set at 500bpm but Gene always adds a little class to his playing and gives us, somehow, a real melody inside all that chaos. He's also a hell of a nice guy! I'd love to see a Gene Hoglan and Chris Adler master class!
And he doesnt appear to trying at all while he shreds some of the best metal one can hear. All while beating those drums like they owe him money. And he says "darn tootin" on the reg . Witch in itself is pretty rad.
I grew up with Gene. My older sister dated him and I used to watch him play baseball and he got me into drums and metal. On of the first albums he got me into was Def Leppard's "On through the Night" and I was hooked. He turned me on to all the cool bands before they went big. I went to Slayer, Anthrax and Dark Angel shows partly because I knew Gene would be there and I looked up to him literally. He used to come over and trash my $200 drumset, but he was something to watch even then. I lost touch with him after high school. Really cool to see him progress in his drumming. That was over 35 years ago.
@@SpookMelonFT Not lying. No reason to. I grew up in Long Beach went to Stanford Junior High School and Millikan High School. I took stage crew class with him. He lived next to the 405 FWY. He used to play baseball as a first baseman and a pitcher. He had a super long fingernail on his pinky finger. We were good friends. What else do you want to know?

I already worshipped Gene as a drummer but now I’m also impressed by his intelligence and obviously vast musical knowledge. I died when he did that sweet shuffle
That is something I have always admired about Gene Hoglan, his "open" playing in terms of not crossing hands down the middle but rather having stuff on both sides. I also love him talking being inspired by Sean Reinert so much. That is something what I love, a great musician not shy talking about inspiration from a peer.
What a great session! I appreciate that Gene actually talked and shared his input on everything rather than trying to "show off" every chance he gets. Just shows how down to Earth he is and that he truly loves what he does. 10/10
Wonderful to see a highly professional and successful drummer who kept his childish joy and excitement for playing the drums and music while doing it completely his own way. A drumming Parzival.

Lack of facial expressions or apparent concentration while playing reminds me of the System of a Down drummer lol. Makes everything look like he is literally drinking a cup of herbal tea.
Gene Hoglan is such an inspirational drummer and down to earth guy, he has written insanely good drum parts for multiple bands, I saw him live with Testament back in 2014 and it is one of my favourite musical memories ever, Gene revolutionised drumming for me, R.I.P ❤️
Its AWESOME to see, watch, and learn from great drummers that play "open left-handed " like I do... Fills can be tricky when your leading with your left hand on a right-handed tom configuration... Thanks for having Him on!!!
Gene is my all time favorite drummer, but I really gotta say I love him even more because of his little slip up at 1:03:53 if makes him look more human, and relatable, and he just takes it in its stride, such a good spirited man
I put a china on my left as well as my right and practiced leading with my left for breakdowns and after a whel I was trying out 2 or 3 chinas as guitar center and the salesman offered to play them for me to hear them from a different spot and was like "I can't do that" and I was like wow maybe I'm not that shitty of a drummer lol
That's a good start as well, just try playing the hi hat with your left hand, too! The real deal is to cross your arms, though, like you normally do. It's really strange and you're gonna laugh your ass off at how uncoordinated it sounds at first :D
That is admirable. Try going through your favourite books totally left handed, becomes natural at some point and your right handed drumming improves drastically without direct practice. I wanted something similar but didn’t have the room, so I just have one kit that is symmetrical and has every element of the kit on both sides. The hardest thing for me is getting used to stepping on a hi hat with the right foot and coordinating that with the hands.
Gene hogland is one of the best drummers on this planet. Dude played with leg weights. He always amazed me in middleschool to highschool and beyond. Great video
I can't get over how completely normal Gene is. For a guy that's been at the highest level for as long as Gene you'd think he'd be at least a little full of himself. Nope. And, his speaking/communication skills are exceptional. Practically flawless. You can listen forever and never hear any 'ummm's or ahhhhh's. No idiotically overusing a word/phrase like 'know what I mean' or 'like'. No childish cursing. We should be calling him Professor or Doctor. He needs a title to separate him from us average folk.
These are what people who do lecturing/presentation techniques call "vocal pauses". Every language has their own versions, some worse than others (some Japanese people can do vocal pauses per sentence word). They are considered poor discourse, much like excessive cursing. One way to get rid of them that's taught in lecture technique is practice a lecture/speech with a counter and literally count how many vocal pauses you do the entire presentation. People usually are not aware of those pauses when they speak.
Alex Cooper the one he might be talking about is when Ash was listing off the bands he played for, and each band Gene gave a smile but when he said Fear Factory, Gene gave a dead face lol
Thank U Drumeo! I've seen him live with Testament, SYL, and Death to All, so I know I'm going to Love this lesson. One of the Best metal drummers ever!!!

Gene’s a total pro, so many eloquent and humorous anecdotes and tips for those aspiring to play like him or in the genre. I admire his holistic approach, being inclusive of a number of skills contributing to his style. I won’t be rushing into getting the leg-weights, but many of the combinational techniques will find a place in an enhanced understanding of the art of drumming.
I don't know why but Mr. Hoglan is the only "extreme" metal drummer I love to listen to and get so much information about the art of modern drum kit playing.
Most people forget that Gene actually came up with the beat that Lars did in One first. Well, atleast released a recorded version of it. He did it on a song called Darkness Descends that was released in 1986. Lars and Metallica just made that beat more prominent by doing an open palm muted riff behind it. If you think about it, One actually hugely inspired all the metal we hear today where the riffs and double bass patterns align. I guess for that simple reason is why Gene wasn’t recognized for it, or simply because Metallica was the bigger band. Either way, Gene is a legend of a drummer. I first became aware of him when I heard the song Love by SYL. I remember going holy shit. His work in testament is great as well. Great drummer. Great video.
I’m a beginner drummer and there are so many AMAZING topics in this interview I can learn from, holy cats! I’m into athletics so much discussion about diet, kinesiology, ergonomics, ankle weights, sleep, etc...WOW! Right down Broadway for me. 🤠 My favorite part was energy economics. I tend to flail my arms around bc I thought that’s what hard rock drummers do but to see a heavy metal drummer say he limits showy flailing to bring the highest level of motion and energy efficiency to his time behind the kit. A wonderful Teacher has been telling me the same thing for a long time....maybe I better start listening to her, she was right! Just never thought it looked “cool” unless you are flailing wildly behind the kit but this man just put that thought to bed. Thank you for an AWESOME video, you guys ROCK! Now back to kicking on 1 & 3 and snare on 2 & 4 and maybe someday I’ll be touring stadiums. 🤘😝🤘
Big fan of gene, super nice guy and always take the time to listen to any project he’s involved with, symbolic is imo the pinnacle of metal drumming. He knows where to be fancy and when to reign it in.
Great interview! Gene usually keeps a tight mask during interviews, but he really opened up here. For a lefty with a weird setup like myself, he's a huge inspiration.
Amazing insight to the world of metal drumming, coming from a master no less. Gene's ambidexterity, power, versatility and creativity will forever remain a vital portion of the history of drumming. And to think he realized his ambidexterity through an accident. I had a similar experience. When I started having back pain while playing, I looked at a video of my band's performance. My left shoulder tucked into the ground it was so low! From then on I decided that all my hi-hat playing would be left-leading. It has since evolved into a style of open-handed drumming that allows me greater freedom, comfort and made my playing a lot tighter. Great interview, Ash, Gene!
In my mind, there’s drumming; and then there’s “Gene Hoglaning”. Those who can Gene Hoglan are no mere mortal drummers, but a different breed entirely. Love your work Gene and the entire Drumeo team, inspiring drummers of all walks in many different genres and styles for years now. Absolutely awesome \m/
As a man with MS, his explanation of ambidexterity is dead on balls. I lost use of one side of my body for 9 months and now I'm left handed first while being right handed. Now day to day I look for the easiest answer and have both limbs as a choice. I suck at both but again his message is solid
Never knew Stevie was a drummer. I've spent the past 2 hours watching old concerts of Stevie, Herbie, Omar Hakim. Made this Metal video last all day. GOOD TIPS!! I'm not even a metal drummer. Love this guy though he's so calm and cool
I think one of the first songs I heard with Gene on it was Gone Forever by Daemon. That blew me away and still does to this day. Bought that album later on only to find out it was jampacked with Gene's awesome drumming. Great sounding kit where you can just hear him hit the shit out of that thing.
YEAH! Gene played on the monumental "Individual Thought Patterns" with Chuck and Steve DiGiorgio. That was in 1993, I was 14 and ripped the frets out to go speed-metal with fretless, hehe. Great to hear from you, thanks for the music!!!
I love his take on energy conservation. Being that I boxed for many years it's almost identical. You don't give everything in the first two rounds you have to save something in the tank for the full fight. Allso much like a martial artist can punch through a stack of wood but it looks like they're barely even throwing the punch.
Had to go look up isolated drum tracks from love right after the sample and talk about it! I did recognize it from the sample and it makes total sense. Happened to listen to Devin Townsend's podcast the other day where Devin praised Gene so much. Gene Hoglan is such an inspiration as a person. Super exciting even as a guitarist to follow the mindset of playing drums. Doesn't hurt to understand drummers a bit better.
RIP the flame boots... The look he has on his face when he plays says it all. It's like a "what am I having for dinner" look. Doesn't seem like he has to think about playing. It looks effortless for him. An absolute legend and great guy!
He and Charlie Benante are the reason i actually bought myself a camco (double bass pedal version) awesome pedals ! They require a bit of training before you start using them, but i quickly replaced my Direct drive double bass for these one, way groovier, action is less robotic !
He talk about it in a live stream...he was always buying camco pedals whether on ebay or any where he could and always having to repair them but still loved them and never wanted to use any other pedal...he has countless amounts of Camco's...but when he tried the demon drive and he specified the "Redline" chain drive version of demon drives he fell in love with them.So rather than continuing to always hunt down and repair Camoco's he made the switch to the Demon drive Redlines and retire the Camcos
47:17 to 49. what the hell. listenend to it more then once. just unbelievable. i've made so many drums on digital. i cant comprehend doing this like he does. unbelievable.

Such a prolific and humble guy. All around great human, and my favorite drummer of all time.
Just listened to Stevie's Songs in the Key of Life today. Can definitely hear his influence on Gene's playing!
Gene Hoglan is Thee Drummer!!! Great inspiration!
I wouldve never thought this man could get any better but he did it! He has a lot more complexity in his drumming then Ive ever heard
Easily the most badass intro on a Drumeo video ever!
As a man with MS, his explanation of ambidexterity is dead on balls. I lost use of one side of my body for 9 months and now I'm left handed first while being right handed. Now day to day I look for the easiest answer and have both limbs as a choice. I suck at both but again his message is solid
Gene could play The Philosopher. One of the most interesting drum lines in the world.
Babadji Nagaradj yup but my all time fave is zero tolerance...
Never knew Stevie was a drummer. I've spent the past 2 hours watching old concerts of Stevie, Herbie, Omar Hakim. Made this Metal video last all day. GOOD TIPS!! I'm not even a metal drummer. Love this guy though he's so calm and cool
Such an incredible drummer, played some of the fastest double bass ever recorded, and he did it in fucking work boots.
That was enjoyable watch! Gene is so calm and down-to-earth you can feel his energy through the speakers. Love this interview!
I think one of the first songs I heard with Gene on it was Gone Forever by Daemon. That blew me away and still does to this day. Bought that album later on only to find out it was jampacked with Gene's awesome drumming. Great sounding kit where you can just hear him hit the shit out of that thing.
Daemon needs more recognition. That band had some fine drummers in their lineup.
Love that guy! True down to earth drummer and a great personality. Definitely carries you far! Obviously it did him!
Play Symbolic!
Or 1000 Eyes
One of the best metal drummers and the coolest guy...
YEAH! Gene played on the monumental "Individual Thought Patterns" with Chuck and Steve DiGiorgio. That was in 1993, I was 14 and ripped the frets out to go speed-metal with fretless, hehe. Great to hear from you, thanks for the music!!!
Absolute master. Absolute monster. My total respect for this guy. Thanks for all lessons, man.
travis orbin is another really good open-handed drummer, would be cool if you got him out there for a lesson
I bought some lessons he sells on his website. They're great and worth the money! (Also they go directly to him, which is good)
I love his take on energy conservation. Being that I boxed for many years it's almost identical. You don't give everything in the first two rounds you have to save something in the tank for the full fight. Allso much like a martial artist can punch through a stack of wood but it looks like they're barely even throwing the punch.
Gene is looking fit! what a legend
Doesn't hurt to understand drummers a bit better.
respect and love for Gene
Seen this guy live twice! Just a beast on those drums! His drum solos are to die for.
We've got the Atomic clock strikes 2 at the North Van Long and McQuade for sale.
You have the best job ever, interviewing the drum master and getting paid to do so. Keep rocking gene !! 🤘🏼
What do Catholics and Metalheads have in common?
They both prefer the old Testament.
Gold.
More like the Jews...Catholics the new testament more hehe
You stole my joke dude!
You mean the Jews!
Wtf!!! Testaments later stuff's amazing!!!!
Love Gene's playing since I was in high school!! Amazing drummer!
Gene Hoglan, so cooooooooooool !!!! Thanks Drumeo!!!
RIP the flame boots... The look he has on his face when he plays says it all. It's like a "what am I having for dinner" look. Doesn't seem like he has to think about playing. It looks effortless for him. An absolute legend and great guy!
guess his old tama-era camco pedals have given up on him.
fantastic player :)
He and Charlie Benante are the reason i actually bought myself a camco (double bass pedal version) awesome pedals ! They require a bit of training before you start using them, but i quickly replaced my Direct drive double bass for these one, way groovier, action is less robotic !
Well im sure good sponser money from pearl helps:)
that sucks majorly :(
He talk about it in a live stream...he was always buying camco pedals whether on ebay or any where he could and always having to repair them but still loved them and never wanted to use any other pedal...he has countless amounts of Camco's...but when he tried the demon drive and he specified the "Redline" chain drive version of demon drives he fell in love with them.So rather than continuing to always hunt down and repair Camoco's he made the switch to the Demon drive Redlines and retire the Camcos
tweevers2 : Pearl demon drive redlines don't exist! He play's Pearl eliminator redlines!
I think you are AWESOME with your amazing double bass and ambidextrous playing !
Wow you got gene hoglan... i love him!
47:17 to 49. what the hell.
listenend to it more then once. just unbelievable.
i've made so many drums on digital. i cant comprehend doing this like he does. unbelievable.
