Thanks so much for the advice on removing the fan from the engine. I used a c clamp to create tension . Worked like a charm..wish i would have watched this first..would have saved 45 minutes.

I agree, I never heard my Clutch Fan click on & off in my 2002 Blazer ZR2 but, it was always sucking air & would never stop.
I'm still getting 16mpg around town. Basically the sticker mpg for 2002 in 2023 w/ 300k miles. Guess it's working partially. Waiting on my Severe Duty Fan Clutch to arrive.
After sitting for a few days it had a little resistance but, I couldn't spin it freely or it wasn't locked up.
Mine was getting above 210° just towing a small 5x9' utility trailer down here in very hot SE Texas around Houston.
It turned out to be very noisy but gave me the extra flow I needed for my AC to work more efficiently

It WORKED. No special wrench. Used the same clamp as yours. Mine is the long one. Didn't think it would fit, but the alt is higher. So put the clamp on and, whack...offf it came. Thanks a BUNCH.

Yes you can it works the same I have an 04 yukon and to stop the fan I used a long extension and it stopped that's how I knew my clutch was bad

Have a similar problem on my 2003 Suburban with rear air. The fan does not spin freely but is difficult to move like yours. However, there is some play in it and never changed (200,000). Recently replaced expansion valve, compressor, drier, and orifice. Water pump and thermostat replaced earlier.
Air good but could be colder so someone said check your fan clutch and believe it’s in locked position since never stops spinning. AC on it's on. AC off it's on. Good point and hard to diagnose since you don’t know how its acting while driving.
Also explains why my heat takes a while to get going in winter. The fan clutch is always blowing.
Changing mine.
Definitely worth the gamble, especially after you did all the other work already

clamp tip on belt is not a good idea. use the tensioner. it's way easier and guaranteed to work 100% of the time
I did this last summer on my 02 Silverado 1500 and it was not easy

Hello there, from Puerto Rico! I am subscribed to your channel and enjoy it very much. I would suggest that the last "wack" on the tool upon reinstalling the fan is unnecessary due to the rotating direction of the engine, which will complete the tightening. Keep up the good work.

I had the same issue. Check your AC fan belt, mine was a little loose. After changing that I could refill it correctly and it blows real cold now.

My 2005 GMC Yukon overheats it doesn't do it for a while when I first start of a morning but at about midday it starts overheating pretty bad I hear the fan clutch come on but it still doesn't cool it down so I'm not sure if it's the antifreeze breaking down or if it's the water pump or the fan clutch just not as powerful.
i recently changed the fan clutch on my 2004 tahoe... I am certain the old clutch was bad. However, now i have another concern... when i first crank the vehicle the fan will run (even at a cold start). It will also continue to run for an additional five minutes (or a mile or so of driving through the neighborhood).
Could you tell me if this is normal or if i possibly have a new clutch that is bad - is there a break in period?
How I personally tested mine was I got the truck really hot, drove it, etc... Then parked it, shut it off, and tried to move the fan. The fan moved with little effort telling me it wasn't locked in even though my truck was close to 210 degrees on the coolant gauge. Should be pretty much locked at those temps. I also let it idle and waited for my air conditioner to get warm and did the same test, same thing, the fan moved as if the engine was still cold

Very Loud, almost to the point of annoying. BUT the added airflow through the old AC condenser made the AC perform well and never gets hot like it used to with AC on high, idling, on a hot day. I'll take the noise for the better cooling.

Yes, I got much better cooling at low speeds, however the fan is quite a bit noisier. It's really just a band-aid as a new condenser is whats really needed.
Long island heats been crazy my tahoe on a hot day with ac on idling doesn't overheat but goes slightly past 210 and ac isn't cold at idle. Did this fix the problem does it now have cold ac at idle and run cooler
It definitely helped, but not necessarily fixed. Runs cooler and ac performs better... the only fix I believe is a new condenser. Downside is the clutch/fan noise is loud
@@AxlesGarage I agree did the job I don't mind the fan noise.. temp does not creep up ever now and ac is def colder at idle. Electric fans would be the fix

My 02 Silverado blow cold air when moving soon as a hit a stop light it starts blowing warm would this be the issue? I start moving again and a/c gets cold any help?
Could be not enough airflow across the condenser, but it could also be a clog or improper charge

Hows the Hayden clutch doing? Does it affect your mileage at all because ive read where people said they stay engaged most of the time and kills gas mileage just curious im trying to decide which to get
It's loud and annoying, but the AC works great, never gets over 200 degrees even idling in the hottest summer days. We just towed a Wrangler on a Uhaul car trailer 400 miles through some mountains as well and averaged 12+ MPG.
Hayden makes great fan clutches. I immediately noticed my air conditioning blew colder after I replaced mine.

Yes it will, but it is a little loud.
You put the wrong one on. The larger diameter heavy duty thinner one is for a non tow package. The one you took off is the severe duty for tow package and fan pitch. Runs 80-90 % vs 70-80 % and engages sooner.

So the nut is not reverse thread! Everyone has been telling me my 2001 suburban fan clutch nut is reverse thread
None of my GMT-800's have been reverse thread. I believe some models may have had fans that spins counterclockwise, those do. If you look up fan clutches you will see.
No especial tool need for this job the alternator has the hole to put the pressure on it but your technique work but the one l am

What I meant in the video was, the correct way to remove, has a tool that goes on water pump 'pulley'
You should NEVER put any kind of "lubrication" on the threads of the fan clutch center hub.... ESPECIALLY if it is powered with a GM / Mitsubishi Duramax diesel... the Ford PowerStroke or the Dodge/Ram Cummins diesels... why?..... because they shut of "Hard" due to their high compression ratio's and if the fan clutch hub nut threads have lubrication on them, they will not hold the torque and "can"... be "shocked" loose, and can actually screw themselves off and into the radiator.... you Don't want that to happen. With the gas powered versions, there is not as much risk of that happening, but if one "insists" of lubricating the fan clutch hub threads... then, use a "Dry" type lubricant.
In fact I would recommend some loctite on it rather than lube

@@AxlesGarage You may get away with not torqing those fan bolts (17 Ft Lbs), but your asking for trouble not torking that Clutch nut at 41 Ft Lbs. I know, its expensive, but the one O'Reilly"s sells, a 4 in 1 for $37 has a 1/2 drive cutout for a 1/2" drive torq wrench...that's a pretty good deal...it's the Powerbilt/Alltrade wrench...
Pro tip on knocking the fan clutch loose. I use a long hammer tip on my air hammer. Disclaimer: BE FREAKING CAREFUL! I've been a mechanic for 35 years, and I know how to do it.
