Don't let Chrysler scare you that much. I have a 2016 Chrysler 200 with 50K and only problem I had was a bad thermostat at like 10K. Not uncommon to have a minor problem early on. I used to sell Chrysler so let me tell you something about certain Chtysler buyers. Chrysler tends to offer huge rebates on their vehicles. I bought my new 200 that stickered at $25,700 for $15,200. I bought it because I liked it, but huge rebates allow people to get into a new car that they otherwise wouldnt be able to finance. What do you think is easier to finance, a Chrysler with $10k off or a Honda with $1,500 off?? This means that people 'fall into' Chryslers much more than other brands. Your average Honda buyer does their research, goes to a few Honda dealerships and finds who will give them the best deal for the model they want. A good percentage of Chrysler buyers only buy a Chrysler because that's all they could finance. Now, which type of buyer do you suppose takes better care of their car? The average person who fell into ther 200 would have been pissed when the thermostat went at 10K and would have thought their car was junk and they would have stopped maintaining the thing. Since more buyers tend to fall into Chryslers than other brands, and those buyers tend to not do regular maintenance, the numbers for Chryslers tend to skew towards unreliability. However, routine maintenance is HUGE when it comes to long term reliability. If you buy a Chrysler and maintain it you should have it for years. Keep in mind as well that EVERYONE has an uncle, neighbor, friend, or ex that owned (fill in the blank car make) that went bad. Don't believe those stories because its likely that the aunt whose Ford Fusion went bad at 75K wouldn't have gone bad if she ever did an oil change on it.
The moment your argument relies on consumer reports you automatically lose the argument. That daid, I agree that Chrysler seems to be more unbreliable, but I'm giving you a reason why that is, a larger group of chrysler buyers don't take care of their cars compared with other brands.

@@MrHav1k 1. I agree that Chryslers tend to be less reliable. I'm giving you a reason for that, one that is within your control to mitigate. If you buy a Chrysler and maintain it, it will be averagely reliable. I'm not saying it will be stellar, but it will do ok. And, like I said, I paid $15K for a car that stickered at $25K. If I've got to put a little extra money into it, there's plenty saved on the purchase price to do that. 2. My issue with Consumer Reports is this....It only gives you five categories of reliability, much below, below, average, above average and much above average. Imagine that 4% of 2015 cars have a brake system issue. A car where only 2% of them have an issue is much above average. A car where 6% have an issue may be much worse than average. Without actual percentages for their reliability their little filled in circles mean NOTHING!

I own a 2017 Laredo 4x4...it’s pretty bad ass even at the base level. The trims above it would just make it that much better. The fuel economy on the 3.6 is pretty good. You can hit the EPA numbers pretty easily and exceed them on the freeway if you are not driving way over the speed limit. I would totally buy another. The only thing I didn’t like about mine was the rake in the suspension...I fixed it with a leveling kit and it looks 100% better 😉👍🏻
I love the grand Cherokee for how beefy they are built underneath. I have family who live way up in the woods of Vermont and they and everyone around them drive jeeps or Toyota trucks. This is one of the best overall reviews of the entire line of the JGC. I am looking to get one very soon, so this helps with respect to what is out there and what packages are available
I have a 2017 JGC Limited as my daily driver and love it, I looked at the Fords and GM's and did not like them, the Jeep is a truck, the Cross over I call a hatch back on stilts. The V6 puts out a nice growl. It has better seats then the others and is quiet and smooth on the raod. If anything would happen to it, I'd buy another JGC.
I'm a GM guy so I naturally would say I don't like the Jeep But, I have to give it to FCA this Jeep has everything for everyone and like you said it has no real competition you can have any flavor you want and still be able to take it off road if you should need to I test drove one and was very impressed with it and my daughter is now enjoying that vehicle 2015 Limited it was very hard to say no Lol !
I have had an Overland for over 6 years. The 5.7 V8 Hemi is a lot of fun. I have replaced the fuel pump relay, water pump & heater fan so far, not what I call great quality. The water pump wound up being a recall so I was reimbursed.
Great review as usual. Bought a 2018 Grand Cherokee Altitude about 3 months ago. So far, we love it. It’s really a great package. Gets rid of all the chrome and is nicely equipped for the price.
I just traded my Overland for a Summit (Hemi QD2), I love it. My Brother has the Trackhawk and his wife has the SRT. I feel more confident taking mine in the deep beach sand than theirs. Either way this is my 3rd JGC and wouldn't drive anything else.
The Grand Cherokee is still a crossover that can go off road, unlike many of its competitors... Jeep even poked fun at one of them (the Kia Sorento) in one of its latest commercials... plus it's very comfortable, luxurious (real wood trim!), and while more expensive than its competitors, it has a large fuel tank and is very powerful and fuel-efficient. We've owned every generation of Grand Cherokee, and our current 2014 is the best one we've owned yet!!! :)
Competition offers 360 camera, hud, cooled seats, lane departure/lane assist, and more. FCA has some of these options available in other vehicles. They need to bring them to the GC.
As a consumer that owns a Ford Edge Sport (1.5 years old) that did cross shop it against a GC and a RX to list a few, I think it certainly does compare. If you primary duty is on road, then it certainly does compare. If you are looking for towing or offroad primarily, then the GC would not compare against something like a Ford Edge. So I agree and disagree. As always, keep the good reviews coming. Quite possibly the best detailed videos on YT. =)
I just bought my 2018 GC 10 month's ago my only problems i had with it was the water pump and thermostat was failing all luckily my extended warranty took care of it
I think a good contender against the Grand Cherokee it's the VW Touareg (sadly discontinued in the United States). No doubt Alex on Autos it's the most informative and impartial channel for car reviews on UA-cam, keep the good work!
Was looking at TDi Touaregs until TFL reminded me that Jeep puts the EcoDiesel in the Grand. Immediately fell in love bc I want the modern tech and features found in an ‘18 GC EcoDiesel vs ‘11 Touareg TDi. Not to mention the aftermarket support. Everybody needs to calm down about reliability. This is the same platform since like 2011. Same drivetrains since 2014. Most of not all kinks have been ironed out if you buy 2015 up to brand new. According to Consumer reports the last year of a product cycle is always the most reliable. If you buy a 2020 it’s gotta be close to bulletproof right?
Alex I enjoy your reviews. I’m considering the GC most likely in the limited model with a V6. The GC seems to have more character then other SUVS some are just to bland I.e. the Edge IMO.
Good review as usual but that’s a 2018 Grand Cherokee. The 2019 models have a new UConnect screen that’s no longer recessed and a piano black trim that surrounds it.
I've owned 6 Jeeps. All before Daimler Benz and Fiat ownership. The 4 GC's and 1 Liberty were all reliable. The Patriot not so much. I have a Kia Optima for 2 1/2 years and it's been very reliable for 120k miles of Uber driving. I'll soon be retiring and considering a Kia Sorento or Niro EV.
GC is on my shopping list, but the crash test ratings and reliability are real concerns. If it had slightly better rear leg room it would be beneficial for small families. Love that it can tow and handle winters/off-road conditions easily
The wife and I are doing research / pre-shopping for a $50-$60K SUV/Crossover to replace our current 2014 JGC Limited. This has been a solid vehicle, and we considered upgrading to an Overland. However, our service experiences were not on the level of the ownership experience of a $50-$60K vehicle. Not even for our $40K vehicle, come to think of it. And that's a shame because Jeeps have a lot to offer their owners. That is the only reason we won't be getting another JGC.
I recently bough a Trailhawk GC. I think that trim provides the best use of practicability and luxury amenities without breaking the bank. But I agree with other viewers, you should review a more accessible version of the GC.
Great cars, incredibly well equipped, great non yummy mummy image and very underrated across the globe. Just poor breakdown and loan car situation here in the UK that lets them down.
Should've reviewed the Limited version, because I seen some on the comments mistaken the trackhawk price for the base price, and in all the trackhawk deserves a separate video from the others
I currently have a 2000 Grand Cherokee limited. bought it with 100k 10 years ago and at 290k I've not had so much as a check engine light! This is my first SUV and even though I don't drive it daily, it made me love SUVs and jeeps. I would definitely get another Grand Cherokee. Very satisfying driving experience and way more comfortable ride than my 2012 Ford Focus which is my current daily driver.
I own a 2017 Jeep GC Trailhawk and find your review very interesting and accurate; before buying mine I researched a lot of them, but for the price and the purpose, there is no comparison, if you want power. I will research again, but will probably buy another one in Jan. 2020, maybe go with the Limited though.
@@elai3147 The engines are generally fine, especially the naturally aspirated ones. No major issues, AFAIK. Usually, the automatic transmissions are the biggest weak point, both because they have poor reliability and because they cost a ton to fix or replace. Otherwise, I think it would be an good vehicle, but you might want to check on an owners forum or facebook group to see what issues they've had before purchasing.
@@elai3147 Can't speak for JL, beause the two I had were both JKs. The first one (2011 2dr): oil pump failed within 3 or 4 months after purchase. Then there was another major issue but I can't remember. The 2nd one (2013 4dr): issue #1 - clutch was burnt within 10k kms, went to the dealer and they were blaming me (I've alway been driving manual including this one. This was my 5th or 6th manual vehicle. Never "burnt" a clutch). Fine, I paid that $1000+ to replace the clutch. Then the wrangler started making funny noise when I accelerate. The dealer kept the vehicle for 2 weeks but couldn't figure out why. issue #2 - the heated seats woudln't work when it's -15c. They will automatically shut off 10 sec after I turn them on. I had to wait it's warmed up inside of the vehicle, then they will stay on. issue #3 - transmission oil started leaking around 6 months later. I had to go to the dealership again.... Talked to their general manager about all the troubles, he was like "that's what warranty is for". Yea, sure, warranty LOL. BTW, both of my two jks were manual.
@Evo Dallas adaptive cruise has been on the grand cherokee for years. I want to say even the 2011s had it on high end trims. It's an option you can add. Had it on my 2016 limited and 2017 trailhawk. I don't think they would remove it for 2019.
@@nyxsyn My understanding a lot of those safety features such as adaptive cruise are not standard on most (or all?) trim levels, but they are available in packages.
I know comparisons are hard for the GC but I think the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport and VW Toureg would be direct competitors for the Laredo through Limited trims while the Trailhawk and up competes with the Audi Q5 and Toyota 4Runner. In international markets, the Toyota Prado would also be a good comparison.
22:37 Jeep offers 12 GC trims. However, in my region at least, dealers don't stock anything other than Laredo's and Limited's. Good luck even finding a 4x4.
For people looking to buy these used (everyone at this point) as you can tell from the comments, the Limited is the best value and sweet spot for this model. Get a loaded Limited and you’ll get most of the good stuff that comes on the Overland and Summit without the problematic air suspension. Skip the V8 unless you do a lot of towing - the 6 is plenty for everyday, normal use and is a proven, reliable engine.
The price tag on this Jeep SUV is insane. Why are cars now a days so expensive? just ridiculous. No wonder car dealers aren't doing so great in sales lately.
They *are* insane (all SUVs, not just FCA). All manufacturers make a ton of profit on these vehicles, so, that means you should never expect to pay MSRP. I'm writing this during Coronavirus (May 2020) so I'm guessing *now* is a great time to go buy one!
Alot to like here. My Dad bought a 2017 SRT GC new and kept it for only 6 months. Said it was his biggest regret as far as purchasing it. So many issues. Build quality was abysmal. He said that is his last American vehicle after that. Felt really bad as I was the one that advised him to get it. FCA crap. My mom atthesame time got the Cherokee and that thing was in the shop all the time. They actually lemon pawed that one thankfully. Lesson learned. Avoid FCA
Blake Swan mine is still running great. Two years in. Never been in the shop. Because you got a lemon doesn’t mean all their cars are trash. Every brand has lemons.
I can agree with you on the build quality. These things come out of the factory with misaligned panels. I've had two grand cherokees and I love them when they're acting right. I suspect I probably won't be getting a 3rd but it has just been difficult to find any competitors at a mid point price range that offer the features I want.
Why is he comparing to a Ford Edge? The Mercedes GLE is much more the comparison point. Is the Jeep a fair trade off discount from that? Is the adaptive cruise 0mph? Traffic Jam Assist?
Guys someone help me here. I don't know if I should get the BMW x3 or grand cheeroke. I was originally going to get the x3 but should I forget it and get the cheeroke or no?
towing cap with the v6 is 6200 on 4x4 models, 6400 on 4x2 models. The $5k leather package is NOT available on Overland, but only Summit, SRT and TrackHawk. The leather airbag cover is standard on the TrackHawk and comes only with the $5k leather package in SRT and Summit. Not available on lower models. I don't know where you got the info from on the 5.7 Hemi's 0-60 time. Was this from your testing? It is closer to 6.5 seconds. 5.7 seconds would need some extensive mods and a tune. 6.5s is pretty slow for all that torque. I guess they were going for the smooth low rpm acceleration given the 390lb ft and so chose a really high final drive. You get lower final drives with the v6 and much lower with the SRT. Maybe this, in addition to the less power and torque vs other FCA cars with the same 5.7L Hemi was an attempt to distance the 5.7 and 6.4 in the Grand Cherokee. The TrackHawk in the video is a 2018 model. 2019 have flush mount nav screens with piano black bezels around the ac and center console.
This was a good overall review of the Jeep Grand Cherokee in the Trackhawk trim. Like what was mentioned in the video there's a laundry list of trim levels to make a selection from. They have some trim levels to compete with non luxury SUVs and the other trims to compete with luxury SUVs. Nice flexibility right there. I currently have the last generation Jeep Grand Cherokee....the WK body style in the Limited trim with a V8 engine and I have intentions on getting the next generation Jeep Grand Cherokee. Based on info I got from couple sources, the next generation which will be the 5th Jeep Grand Cherokee will be unveiled at a Conference sometime this coming year 2019 as the 2020 model. Should be great. The much awaited 3rd row seating will be available this time. Originally, 3rd row seating was rumored for my generation Grand Cherokee (WK body style) and it didn't become a reality. The 3rd row seating also got rumored for the current generation (WK2 body style) Grand Cherokee and obviously it didn't become a reality. In addition to the 3rd row seating, the upcoming new generation Jeep Grand Cherokee will have few more driver autonomous features on top of the ones already found on the current generation Grand Cherokee. When I get the new generation Jeep Grand Cherokee, the trim level of choice for me will be the Overland trim nicely equipped with the HEMI V8 engine.
Why wouldn’t you compare this to a 4Runner? Unibody and frame on body difference aside, seems to me they are very close competitors and I doubt the average consumer could tell you the difference in chassis’s to begin with.
The title of the video is very misleading, its a 2018 trackhawk. You can tell because of the infotainment screen not having flush bezels. Also the Grand cherokee tows 3200 (non towing package) and up to 7200 with the v8 and tow group 4.
I have a 2018 Limited. I bought a module called Smart Stop Start and it allows you to permanently enable and disable this feature. Takes about 30 seconds to install.
Not only is the Grand Cherokee on my list, I've actually bought two. a 2015 HEMI Overland and a 2018 HEMI High Altitude. Best SUV on the planet. Value for dollar is unmatched.
The way FCA makes SUVs appeals to me greatly (though I wouldn't touch their long term reliability with a ten foot pole, sorry). They're much more serious and capable vehicles than most of the lifted hatchbacks that most brands call SUVs (IMO, if you're buying one of those cars, just buy a danged car...stop pretending you're driving anything but a car because that's all those are), but they are unibody-based and are more refined than body-on-frame vehicles. I wish our car market had way LESS typical unibody CUVs, way MORE cars and wagons and hatchbacks, way LESS body-on-frame trucks, and way MORE heavy duty unibody vehicles like the Durango and Grand Cherokee for people who actually use the capability of a larger vehicle.

I just traded my Overland for a Summit (Hemi QD2), I love it. My Brother has the Trackhawk and his wife has the SRT. I feel more confident taking mine in the deep beach sand than theirs. Either way this is my 3rd JGC and wouldn't drive anything else.
Hey Alex, I always look to see what you have playing on the Entertainment screen that reflects the vehicle you are presenting. Nice Easter Eggs. Haha
Adding the new timestamp feature would be very useful for this video.
Looks just like my 2018 Durango GT. First American, so far I love it.
A cross over is a car based chassis with an SUV type body. The Jeep chassis is designed for the Jeep - simply as that.
Competition offers 360 camera, hud, cooled seats, lane departure/lane assist, and more. FCA has some of these options available in other vehicles. They need to bring them to the GC.
Only the hud and 360 cam are missing in the GC. Everything else like cool seats or lane assist are all there in the GC
This is an absolute beast!
JGC SRT 392 is the best overall product from FCA on the market today
Looking at a 2020 Gr Cherokee Laredo E. Adding All Weather Trails package. Trail Rated. Poor mans Trailhawk.
I just bought my 2018 GC 10 month's ago my only problems i had with it was the water pump and thermostat was failing all luckily my extended warranty took care of it
I think you are like this trackhawk in your performance Alex
Really excellent , simplified and deep review
I would love a review of the 5.7l version.
My 1996 Grand Cherokee (ZJ) 5.2 gets the typical 12 mpg city and that's 'normal' driving and yes its in great tune and running smooth as glass
Still good compared to my bmw
Just bought a High Altitude trim of a 2018 Grand Cherokee.
Excellent and thorough review!
Thanks for a sound review. We are interested in their diesel version with one concern: their horrible crash ratings.
I recently bough a Trailhawk GC. I think that trim provides the best use of practicability and luxury amenities without breaking the bank. But I agree with other viewers, you should review a more accessible version of the GC.
1982 Jeep Cherokee XJ was the first unibody I believe.
I bought a dodge performance car 2 years ago. Im still looking for a good service experience.. Not sure it exists
Check engine light bulb is probably burned out....that is why it never came on :)
I wish you had reviewed a more "typical" Grand Cherokee than this monster!
He's done a number of Grand Cherokee reviews over the past few years. You can search for them on his page.
@@rob.halpin - not the 2019s
This comment gave me a good chuckle 😂
@@ATRichard Glad you thought it funny! There are times for little boys to put away their toys and become men.
@Jay G. I was thinking the same thing throughout the video.
Wish you had given us a more detailed walkthrough of the trims.
I am currently considering the SRT
I prefer the Durango
This is basically a shorter Durango.
They're essentially the same vehicle since they're on the same platform. The durango does look a lot more beefy though.
Reliability should still be the #1 concern. Why? I owned 2 wranglers and end up trading in both of them....
tianqi0324 curious what issues you had with your wranglers, interested in getting a jl
@@elai3147 Get a manual transmission if possible. Instant reliability boost.
@@weedmastersr manual transmission is a given, just want to know if there are any glaring issues to be aware of
@@elai3147 The engines are generally fine, especially the naturally aspirated ones.
Its a crossover with an SUV shell.
Same as the Durango, crossover with a boxy body reminicent of a "truck-based SUV".
Why would anyone want to use regular cruise control when adaptive is available?
Skip the V8 unless you do a lot of towing - the 6 is plenty for everyday, normal use and is a proven, reliable engine.
you can do lots to a cheerokee, olow snow, tow crap, go off road etc... wish it was larger
I haven’t seen your Grand Cherokee in forever!
The price tag on this Jeep SUV is insane. Why are cars now a days so expensive? just ridiculous. No wonder car dealers aren't doing so great in sales lately.
You might mistaken the trackhawk price (as shown in the video) for the base price
They *are* insane (all SUVs, not just FCA). All manufacturers make a ton of profit on these vehicles, so, that means you should never expect to pay MSRP. I'm writing this during Coronavirus (May 2020) so I'm guessing *now* is a great time to go buy one!
Maybe you need to have a separate score for off-road vehicles instead of or in addition to the handling score
Chrysler at its finest
This would be a fun to drive Machine.
I went with a Durango over grand Cherokee for the 3rd row. Witch I wish Jeep had. But I'm Happy with my Durango
How does the TrackHawk compare to the new Lamborghini Urus?
About 200k cheaper !!!😂😂
Trackhawk is all about outright power. Urus is power & handling balance
Bennie Mangle Jr. the lambo is $200,000. Twice the Jeep.
@@mytquick87 the Lamborghini Urus starts at $250,000 I think, so the TrackHawk is $150,000 cheaper with over 50 extra horses!!
Why is he comparing to a Ford Edge? The Mercedes GLE is much more the comparison point. Is the Jeep a fair trade off discount from that?
Is the adaptive cruise 0mph? Traffic Jam Assist?
Because the Edge and GC are both two-row American crossovers.
Guys someone help me here. I don't know if I should get the BMW x3 or grand cheeroke. I was originally going to get the x3 but should I forget it and get the cheeroke or no?
Why pay that price when a TrailHawk Elite tow pkg BADASS
You left out the 2012-18 also great vehicle
Hi Alex. Great review. I didn’t see the new 2019 flush mount 8.4 UConnect display. Is that TrackHawk a 2018?
Was wondering that as well - the flush mount makes a big difference asthetically to my eye.
towing cap with the v6 is 6200 on 4x4 models, 6400 on 4x2 models.
How about the 0-60 of the Gasoline V6?
Can you add a reliability section to this?
Outstanding
If I understand correctly, Jeep no longer offered the diesel in the grand cherokee after 2018. Is that right?
solid reviews
When are they releasing the next generation grand cherokee?
Thank you Mr. Alex this video is really useful .
Best presented car video I've seen in a very long time 👍
Alex somehow you got it wrong. Its all LCD instrument cluster. The look is physical speedometer but it's not.
Only the center section is LCD, gauges to both sides are physical.
I always love this GC however I want V8 but gas. Will FCA put mild hybrid in the GC like Ram 1500 pickup e torque
Wait, how much ??!
0-60 in 3.18 seconds....Ferrari territory. You were saying..?
Why wouldn’t you compare this to a 4Runner? Unibody and frame on body difference aside, seems to me they are very close competitors and I doubt the average consumer could tell you the difference in chassis’s to begin with.
Compare with 4 runners
Is FCA ever going to introduce a new version of this and the durango???
Why do they need to? They still compare well with everything else.
Alex can you include in-gear acceleration
The title of the video is very misleading, its a 2018 trackhawk. You can tell because of the infotainment screen not having flush bezels. Also the Grand cherokee tows 3200 (non towing package) and up to 7200 with the v8 and tow group 4.
Finally, everyone keeps reviewing the diesel, most Americans don’t buy diesel.
i would rather get the diesel...the mpg is disgusting for 2018-2019...that filling gas roughly every four days
If it didn't have auto Stop/Start, I might be interested.
That can be turned off with the flick of a button.
Pretty much all new cars have it. It's federally mandated now. There's a loophole but most new cars have it.
Excellent review
How would you spec one if you were ordering one Alex?
