  • In today’s video, we are back on the ae86 trueno coupe project . However, we are taking a step back from painting and sanding body panel s and are going to focus on another aspect of the ae86 build. Today I am going to go over how to fix cracked tail lights , how to use nightshades , and how to use aerosol clear coat paint.
    This method can also be applied to restoring foggy headlights or side markers on most cars. The materials I used for this project, are listed below:
    Sandpaper pack www.amazon.com... - $13.99 (THIS IS WAY OVERKILL, but I decided I will use the other grits for other projects in the future)
    Gorilla (clear) 5 min. Epoxy - www.amazon.com... - $5.47
    “Vivid Orange” paint from Walmart - $0.50
    VHT Nightshades paint - $10.00
    Spray Max 2k aerosol clear (368 0061) - www.amazon.com... - $18.88
    Grand total: $48.40 (cheaper if you get a smaller pack of sandpaper)
    Please keep in mind that the Spray Max 2k clear is not your everyday aerosol clear. It is automotive grade and contains both paint and activator. PLEASE USE PROPER VENTILATION AND A HIGH QUALITY MASK WHEN USING THIS PAINT. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. In a future video I will be using this same process to show how to restore headlights on my Evo. I hope you all enjoyed this ae86 video. Feel free to share the video to other locations and help spread the knowledge.
    Music:
    daPlaque - DEAD_LINE
    daPlaque - Cya
    Ship Wrek & Zookeepers - Ark

    I only used parts of the songs.

      Thanks for the kind words and the reassurance on the clear coat👍 so far both the ae86 tails and evo headlights look just as good as the day I cleared them. I am hoping they don't fade or chip in the long term, but so far so good! Thanks for watching and supporting the channel 👍😎

    Watching all your vids now! One thing you can do, though it requires a spray gun and compressor is mix clearcoat with black paint in order to dilute the colour to get the right shade for tinting.

    Dude, nice!! Love the ingenuity with the epoxy and inexpensive pigments!
    I've worked with VHT Niteshades quite a bit, and I know the look you're going for. Two light coats, allow to cure, then use a DA polisher with a microfiber pad and Meguiar's Compound. Some of the tint will compound out, but leave it a shade or two darker than you want it. After compounding, wet sand with 2000 grit, clean, and clearcoat. It'll give that sweet, "stock appearance" tint. Hope this helps! :)

    I’ve been dealing with this a while. UV made them what they are and proves to be the culprit to many repairs. The night shade rattle can suck. 2k clear with black tint to preference. JB weld contractor pack with a bondo applicator sanded. The plastic is brittle and flex’s at pressure, repaired squire a few in my days. Can’t justify taillights that cost more than the car. Great video, keep it coming.

      el ponciaw hahaha I know that feeling all to well. I was scared to sand these tails, which were already in really bad shape! My evos headlights are awful, they are super oxidized and I am wanting to do this to them next. I'll probably make a vid on that as well. Still a little hesitant about sanding the evo headlights, but if the finish turns out like the 86s tails, I'll be super happy haha. How did yours turn out?

    Hey mate, I know it's an old video now but just wanted to say they turned out very well.
    I've had issues in the past with NiteShades, it is a very very dark tint, no matter how far back you spray from, to get proper coverage it always ends up dark.
    One thing you can do is actually get clear coat in a gun and put a very small amount of black in the clear. It'll spray much nicer then the pressure pack NiteShades.

    • @TheBSRecord
      @TheBSRecord  5 років тому

      Thanks man, they still look perfect today too! Yeah, I have heard from a lot of people about niteshades being difficult to spray. I definitely want to try what you suggested on a future set but I have to get better with a paint gun before trying. Thanks for watching and commenting, I love hearing feedback from the viewers!

    Great job! But Highly recommend not spaying tint. Instead wrap in tinted film. It's consistant and removable if you want to change later. Plus it doubles as a rock guard. That clear is the bomb! Used it many times to do fenders and smaller projects, even did whole bumper covers before. You only have 24hrs to use it after mixing so make sure you have enough project to use all of it and not waste it as it's $22 a can on Amazon. I always dust the 1st coat on and then go a lil heavier the following passes.

    • @TheBSRecord
      @TheBSRecord  6 років тому

      Thanks for the comment and suggestion! After using the VHT night shades, I would probably suggest the same. Tinted film seems like a great option, and it removable. My only worry would be the tint de-laminating or flaking off. I guess one could say the same for paint if it isn't prepped and applied right. That clear coat is magic in a can! It's crazy to see how far aerosol paints have come! Thanks for tuning into the channel, hope you are enjoying the content!

    How are your tail lights now? I’m only asking because you didn’t use any plastic primer before your clear coat. Not using plastic primer which is clear, will result in any clear coat pealing off.

    • @TheBSRecord
      @TheBSRecord  6 років тому

      Wavey Davey they look just as good as the day I sprayed them. I have even applied tape to the clear coat and then pulled the tape up to make sure the clear wouldn't delaminate. I see where you are coming from with the plastic primer, but I don't think it is a necessary step, as long as the plastic is preped and clean properly before paint. I'll let you know if it ever starts delaminating and will update this video to let others know too. Thanks for watching and the support!

    Well that settles it! With how the clear on the tails worked out, you HAVE to paint the car yourself! Side note: I really hope you take this type of amazing attention to detail to the mechanics of the car as well. Much too often I see builds do amazing engine work with terrible body work, or amazing body work with average mechanics. Maybe a person has to have super human patience and above average financial resources to do both. Corners usually have to be cut in one way or another. But I really hope you keep this pace up and do something like build your own mega-squirt ECU, and find real motorcycle itb's, or set your own backlash on the LSD and weld your strut inserts. I see a lot of my own journey in this and as a result I think I'm going to take apart my 86 and do the body work the right way, I focused on the mechanics and lost energy by the time I got to the body. So all I'm saying is if this thing leaves the garage with a open diff, rear drums, and stock ECU, I'll cry and punch a little kid, which pretty much makes you an accomplice to child abuse...just saying.

    • @TheBSRecord
      @TheBSRecord  7 років тому +1

      +Rii hahahaha yes I plan to offer just as much attention to detail as I have with the body to the mechanics. I am a strong believer in "do it right the first time". With that being said I will be learning everything as I go, so it will take some time. However, I do plan (once it's painted) to throw a seat in, taillights/ headlights, and the suspension back on and whip it around the neighborhood for a couple hours hahaha. I have to get it back on the road for a couple hours just for sanity sake. Don't worry though, I plan on rebuilding a smallport 4age from the ground up with either itbs or side draft carbs. Maybe an engine bay tuck too 👍

      Thanks for tuning in and commenting! I will say from my personal experience, the spraymax 2k I used has lasted well over 6 months.
      In a previous video, I used the same clear to restore my evos headlights. The evo is my daily driver and has been exposed to every possible weather condition since the restoration. It also has been parked outside in the elements, since my corolla took hold of the garage haha. The headlights were restored almost 2 years ago and they still look the same as the day I restored them. No hazing, chipping, yellowing, or cracking of the clear coat so far 👍 Of course my case may not be the norm, but I do believe that prep also plays an extremely important role in a lasting finish. Thanks again for watching!

    How is the repair (epoxy) holding up after these years? Great idea to add acrylic color (the lenses are likely acrylic also). I tried some generic epoxy on my old 370z tail, and it held for a few years before de-bonding slightly (possibly due to expansion rates and UV).
    Have you considered a “weld-on” solvent, like for acrylic/plexiglass fish tanks? I am experimenting on some old Mazda tail lights right now

    It's funny you should post this; my passenger side tail light is perfect, but one of the previous owners drilled holes in it to drain water buildup (I think the internal seal went on it).
    I've been thinking about ways to seal it. Idk if they make some kind of superglue that comes in clear, red, and amber, but that would be perfect! Got any ideas?

    • @TheBSRecord
      @TheBSRecord  7 років тому

      Man that sucks, but i think I might have an idea to fix it. The drain holes can be filled with tinted clear epoxy like in the video. You should be able to use a vinyl tape on one side of the holes and fill through the other side. let it cure and sand smooth like in the video.
      As for the internal seal, I think you are referring to the sealer that is used to seal the area between the tail light housing and the lens. If ae86 tail lights are like other headlights and tail lights I have worked on, the lens and housing should be able to be separated. In order to do this, you must heat up the OEM sealant. You should be able to do this with a heat gun or by sticking the tail in an oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for around 5 minutes or so (maybe longer if the sealant does not soften up. When heated up, take a butter knife and carefully pry the lens and housing apart. once apart, apply a fresh continuous bead of RTV sealant or silicone around the outside of the housing (where the OEM sealer is) Some people use OCI butyl rubber glue for this job too. Fasten the lens and housing back together and let the sealer cure. I have done this to some headlights and tail lights before, but not with ae86 tails. I am assuming they are assembled the same way but are not 100% sure.
      With all that being said, if its a small hole in the old sealant, maybe just heating the tail light in the oven (to soften the sealant) and applying pressure around where the sealant is, might be enough to "reseal" the hole causing the leak. Sorry for the wall -o-text, but I hope this helps or at least gives you some ideas. Their are a lot of videos that cover this process on UA-cam too, if you want the specifics. Good luck, take your time, and let me know how it turns out! Thanks for watching and the comment. Maybe i'll show this process in another video...hmmmmmm

    • @anthonywatson3130
      @anthonywatson3130 7 років тому

      Thanks for the reply!
      Yeah, my idea would be to put the tail light in the oven to undo the sealant, then fix the drill holes and later polish the lenses before putting it back together with new sealant.
      I was originally thinking superglue (imagine putting a dot of colored dye followed by a dab of superglue) but I think a clear epoxy might be better. I heard mixing superglue with any kind of water makes it harden instantly but also generates a lot of heat.
      In terms of coloring the epoxy, I've been looking at Rit Dye, which seems to be the go-to coloring for projects, including plastic.
      Now I just need to get off my butt and do it, lol :P
