Although the PS1 version is technically rougher, I really miss the framebuffer effects not in the PC version - the PS1 had some really nice fraebuffer render to texture effects like the slight motion blur and focus effects seen in the cut-scenes
few facts from this project: KONAMI had restricted any textures enhancement - only original. Software mode min requirement - pentium1 with mmx and 640x480max. Hardware mode does not copy exactly PS1 functionality - PC didn't support some blending modes (so snow traces, blood etc looks bit different). Text in codec was made out of some window TTF - original was too ugly. Water and ninja effects was remade for pc and was too heavy for software mode. The whole porting was made by three guys (2 Ukrainians and one Bulgarian) in a beginning of 2000 for 6mo -Cheers
***** oh i mean the actual polygons shifting as you move, all 3D on playstation does it. it's because the PS1 wasn't designed for 3D, they made it work but the internal resolution for any vertices is so large that when you move it recalculates to the nearest one making walls and textures wiggle as you move or turn perspective. There were no z-buffers for it's software rendering. Last I checked emulation softened the effect, but it is impossible to render without that happening, so it's kind of a toss up for effects vs. z-buffered rendering of the 3d environment. though 1080p emulation probably masks it well enough. At least until you get the perspective right up against a wall or any textured triangle. the PC version was probably intended for some archaic GPU like 3dfx glide or something which you can find wrappers for support on modern cards if you want to get the full effect intended. Probably no way to get past the resolution limits.

One of the best and coolest games ever! I remember in 1999, i was like 15/16 and since i had no money to buy games, a friend borrowed me the demo for this and while at first i hated it, cause it made me think and i´m a lazy bastard, as i played it more and more, i wanted to know what happens after Snake goes up in the elevator... So 1 or 2 years later i asked other friend to borrow me the game cause i had my ps1 chipped to play pirate games. I fell in love with the game and the franchise. I had never seen such a good game EVER. This game is a masterpiece. If they made an HD remake(THEY SHOULD) i would buy it for sure.
The PC version of this game, with it's many additions to the original game, such as a FPS mode, an extra difficulty setting, quicksave feature, ability to instantly skip codec calls and such, would be the better version, if not for the fact that the textures end up looking like blurry garbage, they ditch the game's boss battle music entirely and replace it with the alert music, and the game breaking bug that appears late in the game. If anyone really wants to play this game on PC, just emulate it, it makes the game look way better than the actual PC version, and you don't have to worry about the bug or not having the boss battle music taken out
Hemang Chauhan Since there's no memory card to read and no controller port 2, they skip out on stuff that usually happens right before the boss fight begins and they made it to where he's just not able to read your moves at all anymore, which makes it 10x easier and less fun than the PS1 version. The PC port was 100% a complete afterthought to Konami

PC would look better if they added the hazy ghosting effect the PSX version has. I'm guessing it was added to mask the aliasing on the PSX or something but I really like it
2:44 PC version is missing graphical effects. This cool blur filter comes up a lot in the PS1 version's cutscenes so this is a big downfall of the PC version.
The PC graphics look a lot better than the PS1, but I'm not saying the PC port is better. The PC port is basically scaled down as far as content goes. For example: The Psycho Mantis battle is completely different than that of the PS1 original.
It doesn't hook better. High resolution and texture filtering doesn't make the whole picture better. Every asset is the same, plus PC version doesn't have framebuffer effects like Motion Blur, Focus Blur, etc, so PS1 is superior in this department. I know the problem is that GPUs couldn't yet do shader effects when the game was released on PC (2000-2001 I guess?), so the only way to do these effects was software rendering on CPU. But still, it's a cinematic game, so it has to have cinematic effects.
@@stam1ska It does look better. The blur always looked like crap, even on a PS1. But most importantly, the PC port totally gets rid of the "shifting" effect of PS1 where everything from walls to the ground seems to be constantly crumpling around you as you turn the camera. That's the reason PS1 games will always look awful no matter how much you bump up the resolution or add antialiasing in an emulator. And it's completely gone in the PC port. Also calling the PC port "scaled down" because they had to remove one gimmick from a boss fight is quite an exaggeration. It's true that the fight is better on the PS1 version. But it's one fight, and about 1 minute is cut from it due to technical limitations. You can call the fight "scaled down", but not the entire game.
Although it's obviously inferior on Playstation, It brings back good memories seeing the pixelation, blur, and inaccurate vertex positioning of a game running on my beloved Playstation

Haha good luck with running the game in hardware mode on modern GPU. In software mode graphics are on par (if not worse) with PS version. Not to mention all those little things that are missing from PC port.

The bilinear filtering on the PC textures wipes out a lot of detail. Yeah it's technically better, but I personally prefer PS1 at 4x resolution with PGXP and a CRT filter for the UI.
@@GoBIGclan resolution of the emulated version can surpass the PC port, I presume. Certainly the vertex jitter is configurable too. There is a fan fix that gives emulated MGS1 60fps. Should the increased fps not alter the game's behavior, emulating MGS1 with that fix gives the best gfx of all options!
Interesting... I downloaded the PS1 Android Emulator for my Z Fold 3 and downloaded Metal Gear Solid 1 for Sony PlayStation. I placed the resolution at the highest settings and it looks exactly like the PC version with all the details defined.

I never knew they released this game on PC. The PC version looks a lot clearer and cleaned up. I imagine the PC version is the best looking. Sega Dreamcast had Bleemcast Metal Gear Solid, it cleaned up on the Dreamcast, not as good as the PC version though.
If that's true, then ok. Any missing textures or other problems I should be aware of? I already know about the being tough as nails to run on modern systems...

Guys, the only reason why the PS1 is shaky compared to PC is because it couldn't really handle 3D well. It used low precision points to join up faces. When the frame is moved or updated they jump to the next point which is quite far away from it's position before. The PC had incredibly high precision points and each time a frame updated it moved cleanly to a point really close the the position it was in before.
I wish they would have put the twin snakes on the PC, i always wanted to give it a go but never had a game cube... that and the game is like £50 to buy for some reason!
Infamous Felix Gamecube emulators are not great, and I would rather play it on my gamecube/wii than on the PC (also who uses n00b anymore???). Don't get me wrong the fist game is great, I have played it on both on the ps1 (when it came out) and on the PC (maybe 4-5 years ago?). I just want to play the GC one for the fun of it and to have a diffrent experence.
Iam missing that ps1 "motion blur" and some few other effects that are not in a PC version, also on CRT television u dont need higher screen resolution or sharper textures XD
Sorry Sony fanboys but the PC version blows the PSX version out of the water, I dont care about stupid motion blur or whatnot but just look at the clearness and beautiful looking textures of the PC version, yes you can pimp up the PSX version with an emulator to look better but the PC version does it out of the box :D The only REAL downside is that you will need a vintage PC running Win98 to properly enjoy MGS1 PC :( aside from that it rocks as much as on the PSX ^^
***** well yes and no :/ Yes I can get this game running on Win7 also Resident Evil 1 which was designed for Win95 but... it won't play 3 videos the one after the Darpa chief explains the cold war, the one after you save otakon and the final video with the sledge dogs. There is no way you can watch those videos on Win7 because it uses a codec for rendering that is win98 specific :( and this game just runs better on old hardware. I was testing it on a Vintage PC that runs Win98SE, Pentium 3 tualatin 1.4 GHz, 256 SDRam, Geforce 5900 and it ran perfectly, with all videos and in 1024 x 768 and it looks better than the playstations 640x480 native resolution. When I have time I will do a complete comparison to showcase it. Be it as it be you will need PC knowledge to get a relic like this or Resident Evil 1 to run on a Vintage machine, same goes for MGS2 PC which also had its fair share of problems with Win7 or even Win XP on some cards.
***** yes its so annoying :( and its not because they are missing, its because the newer versions of Windows can't play those old videos because it uses some obscure codec that only Win95/98 has and this game was designed for DirectX8 and you have to patch DX8 into Win98 to its last version and whatnot XDDDD overall for simplicity and pure enjoyment stick to the PS1 version. If you are a retro geek like I am you could build a vintage machine that runs a lot of older games like MGS1, RE1, Breath of Fire IV and whatnot. I just wish Konami would remaster this PC version and release it on steam for everyone same as with MGS2 but you are better off just buying the MGS collection on the Xbox 360 thats what I did and it looks glorious :X
sn0dig well you can always try the game cube version of the game (The Twin Snakes), it has way better graphics, it looks like MGS2 for the PS2. Also it has the first person aiming mechanism later introduced in MGS2. All you need is a good emulator like dolphin and in my case a PS4 controller among with the proper programs and drivers for it to work on PC. :)
+Cobra Panic And who liked Twin Snakes? The original is still far superior. Even if for some odd reason you like the over the top, terrible cut-scesnes, it leaves the broken gameplay. MGS2 mechanics just don't work in MGS1 environments and they pretty much brake the game. There's also a terrible new soundtrack and worse performances from most of the voice cast.
sht, the PC version looks so much better (thats to be expected though). However if you get a PS1 emulator you can make it look pretty much as smooth as this. By pissing around with the graphics settings.
The only advantage the PC version has is the resolution and non-shaky textures. Some graphical effects are missing and the music is different on PC (not noticeable in video). There’s probably other bugs due to being an early 90s console port.
+GamerLoquendero X If you're not willing to pirate it, not that Konami would really care anymore, ebay would be your best bet. If you are willing to pirate, just look up MGS 1 PC No CD on Google. Just know that the FMVs don't seem to work right on modern computers.

Carl Yes and no. For the games that you can no longer buy (from which Konami is no longer getting revenue) you could search on *abandonware* sites and emulate 'em. That is, unless you want to buy them second hand on your local retro game shop or on the Internet. To answer your question: it's debatable. People are for and against it. But the naked truth is your government doesn't probably care. You most probably won't get in trouble for downloading these games.
javidg96 Appreciate the response. I've been very careful not to download the wrong stuff since i got windows 10. I've heard so much about how your every move is being watched through windows 10, hence why i also havent been pirating any games. Do you think it's safe for me to download emulators for old games that arent being sold anymore even when i own windows 10? I want to play these games and i don't mind paying but the sad truth remains that there are no other way to do so for a reasonable price.
If you have a PS3, the Legacy Collection has every game in the series, including the first two original Metal Gears. I think all its lacking is MGSV and the noncanon games and spin offs.
The problem isn't a lack of Anti-Aliasing, the problem is that it's rendering at an internal resolution of about 320x240 or less, not exactly sure. That and the PS1 didn't have a Z-Buffer which makes everything very jittery.

it wont be even. you can maybe bump the resolution higher and do texture filtering on the emulator - but you wont get rid of the graphical glitches the ps1 naturally has. which even the absolute first generation of 3D PC graphics cards never had.

C&M Not really tbch, emulators don't count and never will because it's nothing more than a freeware program while this MGS PC version is a legit release and makes alot more sense to do so. Plus it's like comparing to a mirror but with a clearer screen

There are three ways. 1. Emulate. Google playstation emulator and download it. Then emulate mgs. 2. Buy from amazon. An unused copy costs about 200€ 3. Download the game. There is a website where you can download mgs as a winrar file. There is a tutorial on it.

Ricardo Contreras Yeah, probably, cause in PC the spacebar is for FP. Still very difficult to beat Mantis, but it is a good tip. Anyway, if I played in PC, I would choose an emulator capable of simulating a change of the controller input, not the shitty port called "Integral".

Best game ever. When this came out i played it for 10 hours straight, it might look better on pc but its 100% a ps game.

Obviously the image quality is far better on PC, but as others have pointed out the DOF/motion effects aren't present in the PC release.
Framerate, resolution and stable 3D is much better on PC, but I don't like the bilinear filtering, it's too aggressive.

Haha good luck with running the game in hardware mode on modern GPU. In software mode graphics are on par (if not worse) with PS version. Not to mention all those little things that are missing from PC port.

The bilinear filtering on the PC textures wipes out a lot of detail. Yeah it's technically better, but I personally prefer PS1 at 4x resolution with PGXP and a CRT filter for the UI.
What was Liquid even doing down in the opening stage area at the beginning?

@@GoBIGclan resolution of the emulated version can surpass the PC port, I presume. Certainly the vertex jitter is configurable too.
There is a fan fix that gives emulated MGS1 60fps. Should the increased fps not alter the game's behavior, emulating MGS1 with that fix gives the best gfx of all options!

Interesting... I downloaded the PS1 Android Emulator for my Z Fold 3 and downloaded Metal Gear Solid 1 for Sony PlayStation. I placed the resolution at the highest settings and it looks exactly like the PC version with all the details defined.
didn't know it was famous so much.i was sooo good at this.and attached .......just loved the light effects on the characters....(ground breaking at that time I guess:)
I never knew they released this game on PC. The PC version looks a lot clearer and cleaned up. I imagine the PC version is the best looking. Sega Dreamcast had Bleemcast Metal Gear Solid, it cleaned up on the Dreamcast, not as good as the PC version though.
Pc is nicer and sharper looking. But it also seems to lack motion blur, which is kinda lame.
Jonathan Zhin Motion blur only enhances visuals at lower framerates. Theres no use for it if you play at 60fps.
If that's true, then ok. Any missing textures or other problems I should be aware of? I already know about the being tough as nails to run on modern systems...
graphically, the game is fine. pc ports rarely have missing textures
Joe Blackwater The PC port of Halo had a worse looking Assault Rifle with missing textures and when the shield was recharging the yellow ring was missing but aside from that the PC version of Halo rules :D !
+Jonathan Zhin (Bl4ckw1ngz) Old comment, but the main problem with the PC port is the terrible audio quality and cut and chopped music. Since the port team didn't have time to ask for the original audio files, they downloaded a torrent rip of the PS1 version and worked from that.
Guys, the only reason why the PS1 is shaky compared to PC is because it couldn't really handle 3D well. It used low precision points to join up faces. When the frame is moved or updated they jump to the next point which is quite far away from it's position before. The PC had incredibly high precision points and each time a frame updated it moved cleanly to a point really close the the position it was in before.
The PC graphics are better, but I'm going through intense nostalgia over the PS1 graphics.
I wish they would have put the twin snakes on the PC, i always wanted to give it a go but never had a game cube... that and the game is like £50 to buy for some reason!
Get an emulator n00b. Not that you'd ever want to play TTS considering the original is like 50 times better.

Gamecube emulators are not great, and I would rather play it on my gamecube/wii than on the PC (also who uses n00b anymore???). Don't get me wrong the fist game is great, I have played it on both on the ps1 (when it came out) and on the PC (maybe 4-5 years ago?). I just want to play the GC one for the fun of it and to have a diffrent experence.
Theres 1 difference ive noticed on MGS1. On the PS1, The guy in the 132 room thingy is naked while in the PC, hes wearing an underwear.

Yeah PC version looks better. You don't get that blur with the cutscenes when the camera moves like you do with the Playstation version.
Raiden Shields The motion blur effect isn't needed, but for that one helicopter the blur effect looked pretty neat.
Iam missing that ps1 "motion blur" and some few other effects that are not in a PC version, also on CRT television u dont need higher screen resolution or sharper textures XD

Sorry Sony fanboys but the PC version blows the PSX version out of the water, I dont care about stupid motion blur or whatnot but just look at the clearness and beautiful looking textures of the PC version, yes you can pimp up the PSX version with an emulator to look better but the PC version does it out of the box :D The only REAL downside is that you will need a vintage PC running Win98 to properly enjoy MGS1 PC :( aside from that it rocks as much as on the PSX ^^

***** well yes and no :/ Yes I can get this game running on Win7 also Resident Evil 1 which was designed for Win95 but... it won't play 3 videos the one after the Darpa chief explains the cold war, the one after you save otakon and the final video with the sledge dogs. There is no way you can watch those videos on Win7 because it uses a codec for rendering that is win98 specific :( and this game just runs better on old hardware. I was testing it on a Vintage PC that runs Win98SE, Pentium 3 tualatin 1.4 GHz, 256 SDRam, Geforce 5900 and it ran perfectly, with all videos and in 1024 x 768 and it looks better than the playstations 640x480 native resolution. When I have time I will do a complete comparison to showcase it. Be it as it be you will need PC knowledge to get a relic like this or Resident Evil 1 to run on a Vintage machine, same goes for MGS2 PC which also had its fair share of problems with Win7 or even Win XP on some cards.

***** yes its so annoying :( and its not because they are missing, its because the newer versions of Windows can't play those old videos because it uses some obscure codec that only Win95/98 has and this game was designed for DirectX8 and you have to patch DX8 into Win98 to its last version and whatnot XDDDD overall for simplicity and pure enjoyment stick to the PS1 version. If you are a retro geek like I am you could build a vintage machine that runs a lot of older games like MGS1, RE1, Breath of Fire IV and whatnot. I just wish Konami would remaster this PC version and release it on steam for everyone same as with MGS2 but you are better off just buying the MGS collection on the Xbox 360 thats what I did and it looks glorious :X

sn0dig well you can always try the game cube version of the game (The Twin Snakes), it has way better graphics, it looks like MGS2 for the PS2. Also it has the first person aiming mechanism later introduced in MGS2. All you need is a good emulator like dolphin and in my case a PS4 controller among with the proper programs and drivers for it to work on PC. :)
+Cobra Panic And who liked Twin Snakes? The original is still far superior. Even if for some odd reason you like the over the top, terrible cut-scesnes, it leaves the broken gameplay. MGS2 mechanics just don't work in MGS1 environments and they pretty much brake the game. There's also a terrible new soundtrack and worse performances from most of the voice cast.

sht, the PC version looks so much better (thats to be expected though). However if you get a PS1 emulator you can make it look pretty much as smooth as this. By pissing around with the graphics settings.

The only advantage the PC version has is the resolution and non-shaky textures. Some graphical effects are missing and the music is different on PC (not noticeable in video). There’s probably other bugs due to being an early 90s console port.
Oh man, even when the psx came out, i could not get over how ugly the textures and resolution looked. Hopefully i can find the pc version somewhere.

Carl Yes and no. For the games that you can no longer buy (from which Konami is no longer getting revenue) you could search on *abandonware* sites and emulate 'em. That is, unless you want to buy them second hand on your local retro game shop or on the Internet.
To answer your question: it's debatable. People are for and against it. But the naked truth is your government doesn't probably care. You most probably won't get in trouble for downloading these games.
javidg96 Appreciate the response. I've been very careful not to download the wrong stuff since i got windows 10. I've heard so much about how your every move is being watched through windows 10, hence why i also havent been pirating any games. Do you think it's safe for me to download emulators for old games that arent being sold anymore even when i own windows 10? I want to play these games and i don't mind paying but the sad truth remains that there are no other way to do so for a reasonable price.

If you have a PS3, the Legacy Collection has every game in the series, including the first two original Metal Gears. I think all its lacking is MGSV and the noncanon games and spin offs.

The problem isn't a lack of Anti-Aliasing, the problem is that it's rendering at an internal resolution of about 320x240 or less, not exactly sure.
That and the PS1 didn't have a Z-Buffer which makes everything very jittery.

+Ausar0 I imagine they're turned off, because I KNOW the PC version has them. They even use a different font. A little blander looking but sharper, cleaner, less aliasing.

You can get much better graphics in ePSXE than both the PS1 and PC combined.

i honestly don't care for the graphics, i prefer the ps1 version becasue the pc version doesn't come with the dubbed spanish translations, it was so good that even kojima said it, and i prefer playimg in english but alfonso valles as snake... come'on! It is the best spanish dub i had ever heard.

You should record PSX version on emulator to make it even
it wont be even. you can maybe bump the resolution higher and do texture filtering on the emulator - but you wont get rid of the graphical glitches the ps1 naturally has. which even the absolute first generation of 3D PC graphics cards never had.
the ps1 version is far more vibrant as the pc version ;)

You can play on PS2 or dreamcast too. PS2 by backwards compatibility and Dreamcast with Bleemcast.

2. Buy from amazon. An unused copy costs about 200€
3. Download the game. There is a website where you can download mgs as a winrar file. There is a tutorial on it.

Ricardo Contreras Yeah, probably, cause in PC the spacebar is for FP. Still very difficult to beat Mantis, but it is a good tip. Anyway, if I played in PC, I would choose an emulator capable of simulating a change of the controller input, not the shitty port called "Integral".
