    For this list, we're taking a look at the Nintendo Entertainment System titles that were difficult because of legitimate challenge, rather than broken game design. This means hard yet broken games like “Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde” won't be discussed.

    When I was little I found a copy of Zelda 2 outside on the ground. I played it and discovered the battery wasn't working so I couldn't save my progress. I would play for hours before I had to turn my NES off and start over next time. I did this over and over until my mom bought me a brand new copy of Zelda 2 for my birthday. I was finally able to beat it! A very underrated Zelda game in my opinion.

      thats cool, im not tryin to hate on ya, but I see no point, I enjoyed the new battletoads xbox released last year, but im not going back to finally beat "Wizards & Warriors" 2 & 3 IDK I have no passion for nostalgia i guess, i would rather it be remade like tony hawks 1 & 2 than play some clunky choppy interface, same with Halo 1, i never really played it until MCC.

    Contra is a game that seems really hard when you first play it, but as soon as you learn the enemy attack patterns (which are pretty basic) and stick with the spread gun it's not too bad at all, even without the Konami Code. I think Battletoads deserves the #1 spot though, I can't even get past Level 9, despite putting countless hours into it.

    I beat both levels of Ghosts and Goblins in 1990 and it was the toughest thing I'd ever done by that point in my life. I recall getting up on a Saturday morning and started playing. 2 hours became 4. 4 became 6. then 8. then 10,12, 14 hours. I paused the game and went to bed, got up and kept going. All day Sunday I played that GD game. I recall being in the 2nd world level 5 and being there for hours on end unable to progress. After another long pause to sleep again I got up on Monday which was Memorial Day (holiday....no school). I went into what would become my final stretch to the end...progressing finally to the top of level 6. At the end of level 6 when I finally killed *Both* of the Satan boss enemies and that key came down from the top of the screen the astonishing ecstatic joy of the accomplishment was beyond anything I've ever felt playing any modern game. It was a supreme victory after so very long All that hard work, all those hours. I finally finished the game after a 3 day marathon of pain and frustration. And of course, like with most NES games, the ending was completely underwhelming for what I went through to see it. Millennials just have no idea what we Gen-X'rs went through. No clue.

Also my parents only gave us but 1 hour a day to play because they limited hour tv time. It took us about six months to beat those games but when we did oh boy! We felt like the biggest accomplishment ever for the kids we were. Adults at that time didn’t understood what we as a 6 and 7 year olds kiddos went through 😂

    Hudson's Adventure Island should have been on that list maybe even edging out Battletoads as Number 1. The game starts deceptively approachable enough but as you progress the difficulty curve suddenly starts to ramp up. Even with experts playing there are no deathless playthroughs that I know of. And even with experts playing completing the game takes countless attempts. It is seriously one of the hardest games ever made.

      I hear ya; I played most of them as a kid too, but I think that back then, we didn't know how soul-crushingly hard they actually were. In my case, at least, I just figured I sucked and had to get better at the games, which meant practicing until I got blisters on my fingertips.
      It wasn't until the coming of the Internet and other people started saying the same things that I realized how poorly designed these games are.

    • @gluserty
      @gluserty 8 років тому +1

      I agree, sometimes I thought I had to just get better at the game too, not that I was playing something very flawed. It is funny looking back at it now; for example, for "Ghostbusters" on the NES (glad it was just a rental), I figured I didn't know what I was doing. Turns out, I'm glad I didn't know what I was doing, since there wasn't anything worth figuring out:-)

For those who don't know it, it's an overhead shooter where you fly in a space ship and have to defend against several difficult and numerous alien does that come at you from literally every possible angle. It is a fun game, but difficulty is through the roof hard!!!! Check it out!

      Snakes warp is actually easiest one to get. Getting to Elevator level isn't that hard. It's actually getting to top floor, beating the boss. And then you have terrible pipes level. Pipes are almost entirely memory based level, so you will die. A lot. After that, you have Rat Race. Jesus Christ, RAT RACE.
      On the side note, Battletoads 4 Player Race is great video series showing pure monstrosity this game is.

I’m currently stuck on El Viento and Veediots .. the levels are just polluted with enemy’s and traps, plus it’s wildly frustrating to start all over again when you make a mistake and lose .. but I keep coming back to em’ becasue they’re so much fun! I respect all these UA-cam cats that can speed run these and other games like em’ .. I feel like the older games are just so much more challenging

    Back to the future 2 & 3 for the nes should be definitely the hardest, that game pushed the boundaries of gaming and encouraged you to make maps to find all the objects of the game. Yeah one of the few games that forced you to study and sketch homemade blueprints of 3 timeline maps and see how they intertwined in order to find secret areas where objects may lay hidden. After you find any of those spots (doors leading to rooms) you had to survive the time challenges , many of them annoying, others relentless. Then you have to find the location in each timeline map where any of those objects belonged and if you failed to guess the object's name correctly, the item will dissapear from your inventory and go back to the room you find it in the first place. There are 40 objects in total and 40 hidden locations to place them. And that's just one game then you have to play back to the future 3.

      +Derian Tomkins Super Mario Sunshine IS an awesome game in my personal opinion.
      But the arguments for or against it never stop.
      Personally I like the tropical theme, only because not a whole lot of games do, even if it does feel repetitive for a few levels. Yes, Blue coins were broken but they were optional. And lastly, I thought Fludd platforming was pretty fun. What I DIDN'T like in the platforming was that the physics and controls weren't the best and you really required Fludd consistently. Now, whatever opinion you have on these points is where the controversy comes in. Because after, people don't argue about the games that are almost completely amazing or completely terrible. It's the ones that have great merits and terrible ones, and which ones you love or hate.

      Samuel Baugh Bless you mate I hear you. That said though the only thing that really drove me up a wall in the game (besides the stupid way in which you save the game) is the fact when you die not only does your EXP get nicked but you get sent back to the first palace because dying alone isn't enough of a kick in the balls already. :) Steaming aside it's still a rewarding gem for the NES.

    I definitely agree with #1. I was a avid NES gamer as a kid and BattleToads tops them all for me. I know a # of people have said Ninja Gaiden, although it was very difficult, I was able to beat the game within a few months of on and off playing. It took me over a year to beat BattleToads. I actually gave up playing the game for several months because of its difficulty. I never played Batman so I don't know its difficulty.

    • @muzen833
      @muzen833 Рік тому

      batman is a bit difficult but playable except the last boss(joker) who is ridiculously hard, I remember at one point i could get to joker without dying but he would kill me every time until i somehow beat him by fluke and that was it. i've finished nearly every "hard" nes game except battletoads. i tried that game and thought hey this is cool but once i saw that bike level i said what is this! this is just absurd and stopped playing it.
