    And the internal weight is just hilarious. I can see that being justified by, "Well, it's for ergonomics so that the board doesn't slide around", but for $160, you could accomplish the same thing by giving it a metal frame.

All so they don't feel like they have to do any work or take responsibility, hey they learned it from a "productivity expert." What's truly sad is that there are people going to buy this, like most of the Higherground boards for WAY too much money. IMHO this board would make me less productive personally. Seems like he found a keyboard that already existed, and made his own keycaps for it. Probably would have been better off making just a keycap set.

    As you so correctly point out the primary audience for this keyboard is not people like yourself, keyboard enthusiasts or afficionados, but rather a segment who generally know little about keyboards as a whole. For them "tactile" doesn't have any bearing in the sense it does for you, it's not a way to describe the function of the underlying switch below the keycap, but rather it is something that is connected with the sense of touch. This is something which holds true for all keyboards, whether they are mechanical, membrane, or even micro switches or dome switches, it's all tactile. A touch keyboard, or an on screen keyboard on a phone or a tablet, is not a tactile experience though. So his marketing material, at least in this aspect, is spot on, just not for you. This is the problem with terms which means different things in different contexts. For instance, I have worked as an interaction designer specialized in tactile experiences, I have never once designed a keyboard. Tactility is an extreremly broad field.
    Thanks for your videos Hipyo, they informed me a lot when I bought my first proper modern mechanical keyboard, though the experience of trying to find good keyboards with an ISO layout is an absolute nightmare. Have you had any thoughts about making a video about ISO layouts and the best keyboards in various budget segments? I ended up going with the Keychron K10, as it was one of the very few full size keyboards with an ISO layout, that also had bluetooth and hotswap, that I could find.

    Maybe if we find out where those extra 6 months of development went,
    we'll find the alternative South facing LED PCB and the additional foam sitting next to them!
    So that it'll STILL be more overpriced than every other sub-$100 board out there! Yaaay!

    definitely have a similar feeling when I see folks recommending the sort of stereotypical “gamer” keyboard for like $80-$90 or more when other boards with increased functionality (e.g. key remapping with VIA) / more desirable mounting (e.g. gasket vs. tray mount) are available for the same price.

    I use a 31 year old IBM Model M keyboard with catastrophic buckling mechanisms on my current machine, and it's awe-some -- types so fast. This video reminded me of the design because IBM added weights to that keyboard at the time, and my own keyboard weighs about 4.5 pounds. I do have a second keyboard at the ready, though, because although I'm pretty in love with the Model M, it's really really noisy, and I can't really use it if I'm in a meeting or on the phone. Anyway, thanks for the great videos!

  • @chromenewt
    @chromenewt 3 місяці тому +4

    Only a quarter way through while watching. On the "tactile" front, I'll admit the custom keyboard i built myself uses the clicky Kahle greens (sage? I can't remember but they're green and clicky) alongside some low profile keycaps from Aliexpress of all places on an Epomaker (oh jeebs.... Just realised i made so many keyboards in my quest for the perfect keyb that i can't remember which one i used... Damn you, Hippyo, and your vids getting me into this!)
    Anyway, there's something nommy to me about that click-thock, so if he's talking about switches i can understand what he means (it's still a warcrime during game sessions using VOIP, but my work productivity has increased dramatically)
    Edit: I just got to the switch part. *LINEARS*!?! Gorram tactile-traitor! To the gulag with him!

    Glarses cameo was amazing.
    The concept of productivity can change from person to person. For myself, productive keyboard has to be atleast a TKL due to needing a quick access to arrow keys and home/insert buttons + f-row. I would pick pressing only 1 button for a thing I need instead of multiple. It's all preference, but as mentioned 60% doesn't sound like a productive keyboard size.

    Hey Hipyo, can you review the cool budget keyboards that popped around EU market recently? You might have them in the US also, I am talking about Endorfy Thock full size with knob (5 pin hotswap, 2.4 ghz wireless & BT with lubed stabs) and Dark Project KD104A (it has optical lubed Gateron KS-22 switches, lubed stabs and its hotswap) they both go for about 100$ here. Ducky one 3 for example is 200$ and it should be much more premium but in fact it seems to be the opposite.

    And like someone else says - for a productivity keyboard, where is the numpad?

    Best keyboard I ever had all around was an original Ducky Zero with reds. 10 years and still going. Best all around I’ve gotten recently was a Durgod. Only bought it because my machine gun typing on regular reds was annoying my co workers, and it was the only one I could find with silents for a reasonable price on short notice. Bigger issue for me is always the caps, and I prefer cuppy caps, so I have to buy a key cap set.
