Hi there! Aspiring food scientist/sensory scientist here. The way that is bottle “works” is by taking advantage of retro nasal olfaction. Basically there’s 2 ways for the compounds for aroma to get into the nasal cavity: the nose and up the back of your throat. I think a lot of people have heard that most of flavor is smell, and that’s completely right, since retronasal olfaction accounts for most of flavor (in addition to taste and nerve sensations). So in fact, you’re mostly just smelling the flavors of these pods, though there is some taste happening. Now the problem with this bottle is that the people have different levels of ability to perceive aroma or odor. Some people just lack the receptors for some odors (this is called anosmia). The bigger issue is with the nose. In order to have retronasal olfaction, the nose HAS to be unblocked so that air can flow through. This can change with allergies or illness, and it’s why flavors are harder to taste when your nose is stuffed. The general population also has people who have structural differences like deviated septum. This really decreases your ability to perceive odor. Okay so two paragraphs later, what’s my point? My point is everyone perceives aroma and flavor with differing levels of sensitivity. That makes this product difficult to market, and the AirUp company have made really broad claims on how EVERYONE will experience this sensation. Also!!! Aroma and flavor is extremely hard to capture in a pod such as that, and that’s part of the reason why many people experience the “vomit” aroma/flavor. Aroma composition is crazy complex, and by producing such complex flavor pods, the aromas will definitely get muddled and interact in odd ways. Thank you for making this video because I’ve been wondering for MONTHS about this company and actual consumer opinions. What you’ve showed us a lack of sensory consumer testing before launching of this product, and it’s been supported by the comments saying it worked for 2/10 who tried it.
honest i've only seen one exeption to my rule. its raid shadow legend. I've seen it way before it was on the google play store. I still have pictures of it being a game promoted as a sex game on streaming websites. ( you know you click and they ask you for a credit card and finally its a game on flash with shitty graphics and you get scammed all your money) yeah. that's how RSL got their money for their revival. @@I-think-I-can-Shoot
Air up was a German start up that got attention in the German version of shark tank. After they huge in germany, than Europe they started to expand globally like in the us market. That's why they "came out of nowhere". Huge company throws a lot of money in marketing
Sidenote, there is one product that seems to work. If you haven't gotten Hexclad cookware, it's really nice. They ended up sponsoring a ton of people, and it's really nice. Had mine for 3 years, and still working very well, not perfect, but great.
I did get RayCon headphones, though. They're actually pretty good. I used them for a couple years till my partner got me airpods for xmas and now my stepdaughter still uses them years later. I had to fix the case at one point with some electrical tape but the fact that it WAS repairable is a feature imo.
I mean, they make infuser water bottles. Where you can put cut up fruit and/or veg in an infuser in the water to give it a hint of fruit flavor. And you actually get at least a LITTLE nutrition with hardly any sugar or calories compared to something like soda…
Heya, material engineering stundent here. The fact that the cap leaks water is intentional but it is executed poorly. There's a gap so when you suck water, the bottle lets air in, so you can actually suck the water without having to try and create a vacuum inside the bottle. Now this could be fixed with integrating a pressure valve in the cap but that would increase the already high price... though probably not by much. Still, I'd say it is an oversight in the process of making the bottle usable. tl;dr the leaking is intended but an oversight since the fix would be quite easy to implement from the company's end.
Maybe in order for the "smell pod" to work they needed a bigger hole (larger airflow)? Because all my cheap water bottle caps have valves. It can't be something you skimp on nowadays.
I have one of those bottles. The cap is designed in a way that the air gap is pushed down to seal it. So would he actually have turned the bottle right side up, it would have been dry on the inside of the cap. Of course, if it leaks upside down without the cap, it will leak into the cap when the cap is unscrewed while it is upside down. Not to defend the design. Just saying, it works as intended and it does not leak as long as the cap is screwed on fully. Not into the cap, not into your backpack. Is it a good design? Well, probably not so much. Oh and btw. it also pushes the pod down when you screw it on. That way it does not leak water into the pod. Which also is something you probably would not want.
For everyone saying he “didn’t assemble the bottle correctly” and that’s why it’s leaking, Air Up LITERALLY states on their website that any tilting will cause the water bottle to spill.
@@ethanv7330It leaks with or without the pods installed. Having the pod in an open or closed position doesn't change its' thickness as it is a constant width, it's plastic. The gasket itself is leaking, so if the mere presence of a pod is enough to solve the leaking issue, there would be no issue. At the end, you can even see him try and push the pod down further to stop it from shaking all over his clothes. Just like his male friend did when he spilled it. This is a common occurrence.
I have a suspicion that a lot of youtubers expect their viewers to ignore sponsorships outright, so they dont really feel bad for accepting sponsorships for shitty products since hardly anyone will actually buy them
well yeah, but also, I just assumed everyone else was like me and ignored every commercial ever. But it's apparently worth millions and millions of dollars for the companies to show them, so I guess not.
I prefer UA-camrs like Pyrocinical who just say “yeah I’m sponsored, it helps keep the lights on”, and doesn’t really engage with the product other than what they’re required to say.
I mean yeah watch time can be seen and it’s pretty obvious when everyone skips sponsor segments. Plus sponsor deals where they get paid for each click or buy. UA-camrs know lol
The rule of thumb: If you see something advertised everywhere, you know that their money has gone towards marketing and not towards improving their product.
It's just so bizarre that they can't even get the 'water bottle' part of it right. Surely, you start there, and workshop how to get the scent stuff working around a perfectly normal bottle?
@@Joe90h If I had to guess, they probably had a prototype with the same base design that was watertight. Then they reduced the costs of producing the prototype by skimping on the materials, but couldn't be arsed to pay for more R&D on the new version, resulting in a leaky version of a design that worked fine with sturdier silicon.
Yeah, like those horrible Raycon earbuds. I have a pair of Altec Lancing Nanobuds that I've had my fad-changing co-workers try after listening to Raycons. Most like the AL Nanobuds more, and the rest can't tell the difference. Difference? Oh, about a 1-to-3 price gap.
id say huel is a decent one tho. this tech youtuber i watch, actually u mightve heard of him as he does some keyboard stuff, badseed tech, had a huel sponsor and he mightve said something along the lines of that. ive heard of the company before but never really thought much of it. he said that he gets the black edition which basically is more protein and less carbs. i thought about it and it seemed decent concept wise. ive now been drinking the black editon huel everyday before work for 2 months now. just started my 3rd bag.
@@Sinsanatis Even if that's true, it's pretty rare and not worth the risk. I was on the market for a pair of earbuds a few years ago, when everyone was shilling raycons, and I thought "hey these must be pretty good, since everyone is advertising them". But then I asked some people who did actually buy them and like at least 90% of ppl did not think they were worth the money at all. I did my research and decided on Sony WF-C700Ns instead, and they've been perfect The point is, youtube sponsorships are a terrible way to make decisions on purchases, you can never expect someone who's being paid by a product to be objective about the product. There are some exceptions. PewDiePie doesn't take many sponsorship deals, and I know some others who don't take deals unless they actively use the product, so when someone like that has a sponsorship, you can usually trust it a bit more. But generally, do your own reseearch
I think it's less of a scam and more of an over-promise issue (except the quality control. That was awful to watch). Scents are way more complicated than tastes, and you'll never find a single thing that smells the same to everyone. Even odorless things can sometimes have a scent to some people. To say that everyone will like it is... just not possible. In fact, it's actually bonkers to even assume that's possible, considering how scented candles NEED to market towards specific groups and specific countries. There's a reason why the same exact franchise/company (like bath and body works) don't have the same products in stores geographically far from each other. They basically can't, because it's not reasonable for a scent to be the same in a completely different environment with a crap-ton of other factors. They know this, and don't try to constantly over-promise the enjoyment their scents produce, unless it's a line or group of scents. A single product? Yeah, they try to avoid that whenever possible. It's just bad business.
That's what I heard is that some people who review it get absolutely nothing out of this because their sense of smell is too weak and Hipyo here gets absolutely blasted in the face with scented candles because he clearly has a strong sense or is just repulsed by artificial scents.
@@gamerguy425 pretty much. It's like cucumbers or cucumber flavored products. Some people love it. Some absolutely hate it and legit don't understand how anyone can. The issue here is if the cucumber company kept marketing it everywhere saying "it's so much better than anything else out there!". Like, obviously people are going to take it and feel like they were being scammed because it tastes like crap to them. It's insane that any company would think it's a good idea to make those kinds of claims. And yet... Here we are
That definitely makes sense. I’ve been wondering if it’s less that this is a straight up scam and more that some people get a good ‘taste’ out of it and others don’t.
@@GodhandPlusOne literally the last sentence is "it's just bad business". I've put the blame Solely on the company entirely, from the start. Never even said anyone was misinterpreting anything. Hell, I didn't even talk about the consumer at all outside people having wildly different reactions to scents (the coldest of takes imaginable). All I said was that it was *less* of a scam. Which is pretty true- there are people who enjoy it and who never lied about their enjoyment. Its just their crappy marketing and bad business model that tries to overreach past their market in the most asinine way possible. I literally don't know what else to call it except over promising. It isn't an outright lie, as some people do in fact like it. So saying "you will like it" to a massive and diverse audience isn't entirely false, but it IS absolutely saying that more people will like it than physically possible (since no one will like everything). Which is a promise they can't fully achieve. Generally called over promising.
Honestly, at this point the more aggressively a product is being advertized through UA-cam sponsorships, the more I expect it to fall somewhere between being utter garbage and an actual scam, and the less inclined I am to even consider looking into the product, let alone purchasing it. After Established Titles, Better Help, and apparently now Air Up, I've certainly lost the very little trust I had. When a company has so much money to blow on marketing that they seem to be willing and capable to sponsor each and every UA-camr that has built at least somewhat of an audience, something has to be fishy.
The video is pretty bad tho. The product is actually fairly good, Ive been using it for months and love it. I went from drinking no water to only drinking water thanks to it and while the first bottle has quite strong taste, the longer you use the pods the better the taste gets. It also doesnt leak, unless you open it upside down of course like he did in the video, but any bottle will leak that way. If you keep the lid on you can store it upside down with no problem, no leakage at all
@@ja_uI'm not sure if that makes the video bad per se, it just seems that you personally had a very different experience with the product, which is very valid. Maybe I'd like it too if I tried it, who knows! But to be honest, I've always been sceptical of the concept, it's just nothing I'd ever want to use. This video validated many of my concerns about it. And it proved to me how products that are being hyped up through UA-cam sponsorships are not necessarily all they're claimed to be, which I guess can be said about any kind of advertising. To sum that up, my point still stands, I have very little if any trust left in products and services that apparently spend a fortune on UA-cam sponsorships to promote their product. It just doesn't sit right with me, and actually has the opposite effect of what those companies want to achieve.
@@givemeaworkingname That's one thing that I've also been considering because it sounds great. I haven't heard anything about it besides sponsorships though, so I have no clue if it's actually good or not. A resource that I like to use for this sort of thing is trustpilot. Just checked, and it seems that Brilliant has a really good score over there (4.6/5 for my country). So chances are it's genuinely a good service.
I think I’ve only ever seen one UA-camr whose Air Up bottle was legitimately used and worn from use. When they said that they had used it for many months now, this was the only time I legitimately believed them because that logo was fading and the plastic looked chewed and everything.
Is it Ofherbsandalters? That's the youtuber i know of who isn't a super popular creator but has a consistent audience and made an unsponsored video about airup where they really liked it.
Whenever a UA-camr I like promotes a product and says stuff like "I use this every day" I'm like... "Are you sure? Or did the marketing department tell you to say that so your audience buys the product?" On one hand, UA-cam can be absolutely out of their minds with their monetization system and can even demonetize videos for no reason. So understandably, it has become one of the bigger/only methods of making money as a content creator, but I sometimes wish they didn't have to promote products that are actual garbage.
I mean yeah capitalism sucks, we could just not have poverty but capitalism needs it to function properly and here we are, it could be more democratic but only for a little while because ownership is more important than actual work put into things. If we rewarded value instead of owning the value we'd be a lot better off but oh well here we are and now the world is ending ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
im getting pretty frustrated with youtubers having literally 0 integrity about their sponsorships, especially big youtubers who can afford to be choosy. it feels like nothing is genuine.
Sponsorships always feel sketchy to me. When they are advertising this aggressively on UA-cam the product is probably overpriced to begin with to compensate for that cost.
@tetraasmr I absolutely agree, it's quite disheartening and some creators have gotten backlash, like Kurtis (deserved, I say). What frustrates me about really successful creators is that they often do the "begging", ie aggressively promote their Patreon etc, while _also_ taking any shady sponsorship ready to pay them. It does, indeed, not feel genuine, it feels like any greedy, cash-grabbing company out there.
So all the youtubers and podcaters are lying how amazing this is and how it's like drinking real sida? I haven't bought this thing but I still kind of feels scammed because they sound so positive.
I think the hole in the lid is for air to get in as you are sucking in water so it doesnt cause a vaccum but it would not be good for moving around in a backpack.
The cap is leak proof though? Idk why he unscrewed it upside down because that’s where the water spilt into the cap. You wouldn’t do that with regular (single use) store-bought water bottles and then complain that they spill?
It was horrible and difficult to return. I had to dispute the charge. They were not happy about my review either they e-mailed me requesting an "updated review". I said send me a refund, and they offered another bottle and deleted my review after I disputed the charges on my cc.
I'm glad I saw this video and read your review, along with a bunch of other horror stories in the comments section here. I was eyeing up one of their bottles and the extortionate price was the only reason I don't already have one of these bottles; I was looking to get a bottle and an array of flavours next month after holding fire because of the price. Any company that deletes reviews, pressures consumers for updates/changes on honest reviews, or makes refunds and returns a difficult/impossible process needs to not exist.
Sooo, I live in Japan and it's extremely common to get flavoured fizzy water that's flavoured only with scent here. I bought a bottle once, mainly because it was zero calories. I wanted to try it. I was surprised at how good it was and when I looked at the ingredients, I was flabbergasted to see it listed only water and "scent" - some flavours do have "extract" in them but many are only scent. I'm not really sure how they do it (the brand I like is "Wilkinson"), but it comes individually packed in plastic water bottles and are far more affordable. You can get the store brand ones for less than a dollar a bottle and those are also pretty good. It's a shame that air up tried to take something I find to be fascinating and actually really good (and affordable) and make it very half assed and extremely overpriced.
@@finn7599 I don’t know if you understand how sweeteners work, they cause cancer and shit. Flavoured water isn’t good for necessarily good for you. Air-up is
It's a perfect PR storm. The bottles cost nothing to produce, the scent caps are just foam with artificial scent so also incredibly cheap to produce and it targets the usual hipster crowd by being "healthy and without added thingamabobs". I can definitely see investors swarming this thing. It's profit maximalisation at its finest.
It only got so big because people could finally "get away from sodas". I fucking hate fitness scams and lose weight fast solutions because it teaches nobody anything and the same pitfalls for relapse still exist. If you want to stop drinking soda, stop drinking soda. If you want to stop smoking, stop smoking. If you want to quit alcohol, just chug it away. Nothing is going to magic away your addictions or your habits, it's all work and dedication and the sooner people realize it the sooner people can stop pouring money into these scams. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Actually a lot of people (and kids - surprisingly) here used it - although I feel the hype is dying down (Netherlands). We have one and actually thought it was kinda nice, same goes for my wife and daughter. Definitely not had such a reaction to fresh pods haha. The quality I feel we've been lucky with (no leaking if you use it correctly), but definitely can see some flaws in the design. But again, in my environment the AirUp doesn't have a bad rep and was quite popular even. Maybe helps that I didn't get into contact with it via YT spam as well.
@@UrfavLuna1234 It's cost-effective for me personally. I struggled with drinking soda and changed to bottled fizzy water, but between the cost of those, how much I can get to drink out of them and how much recycling I have to do, compared to the cost of air-up and its pods with how long the pods last, I'm glad I got mine.
Classic case of "if we tell them they want it, they'll want it". This is happening more and more these days and the products attached to that ethos are getting less and less logical
@@thedogethatgamesI’m kinda surprised folks think they’re expensive, cause for me it was an alternative to getting Beats / AirPods. But I have no idea if they’re no better than a Walmart or Target brand, I just didn’t think they were horrendous. People who think you can "force" a cat to perform have never met a cat. You can TRAIN a cat, but that's different from forcing. And Nola just likes her dad.
Probably also has a lot to do with a lot of people not realizing that cats can and do behave that way towards people on their own, just because they feel affection for those people.
Also, she's probably learned by now that when her dad speaks with a certain tone and cadence toward the thing with shiny bits and lights (i.e. when he's filming a video), she's probably going to get a new cardboard box to explore soon (3:55). Cats are rarely trainable like dogs, but they _do_ recognize patterns, make associations, and love cardboard boxes.
@@HaloInverseYou can train cats to do specific things, but there has to be something in it for them. You know, like when they walk across your keyboard and you play with them as a distraction, and then they keep doing it… But in all seriousness I have so far trained 1.5 cats to shake hands with me for a treat! One of them looks you in the eye and puts his paw in your hand. The other doesn’t quite get it yet and just touches anything repeatedly (such as the treat, my hands, my sandwich, and my face) to see if it works. He’ll figure it out eventually.
@@gingerninja8872 That's true, although in the original video I believe they said the pod was left sitting out for those few weeks, rather than being used. I also imagine the difference between the products has something to do with the toys' perfume being essentially baked into the plastic, in contrast to the pods where it looks like the main scent component is a cotton piece that's presumably just been dipped in whatever oil they're using.
I genuinely enjoy air up, I don’t exactly like most the flavors but I highly enjoy peach. It’s not typically bad, but they create too high of expectations.
That’s also their job, tho. They’re not gonna say “try our product, it’s okay, but not the best”. They have to sell it, and they have. This video is ridiculous, tho. Seems like it’s for views only. I used Air Up years ago before I saw it advertised everywhere and it’s great, although expensive. Many of my friends and family have tried it as well, and every single one of them liked it, which always shocked them. I used to drink no water, now I drink around 3L a day. Genuinely. It’s a great product, and this is a video of someone who went in with a negative mindset, and the comments are of people who have never even tried the product. Just weird.
Totally agree ! I bought myself an AirUp after a friend bought one for herself and let me try it, felt weird at first (the bubbles when drinking and the scent feeling a bit too chemical to me, it was rose-litchee I remember) but I still bought one hoping I would drop sodas and drink more water. It's a total win on me, I bring it every where and refill it at least twice a day, I barely drink sodas now, like an occasional gaming night. Not all pods are good, and it really depends on people's taste I think, personnaly I love the wildberry, orange creamsicle and peach flavors the most. The downside is the price and plastic amount though, I feel like it could be reworked somehow...
why not just get some bubly drops it's literally half the price per gallon, doesn't need a stupid cheap proprietary bottle, comes in paper packaging + glass bottles, you can easily adjust the strength of the flavoring
@@v000000000000v The idea is that olfactory receptors trick the brain into thinking that you are drinking flavored water, when in fact you are drinking pure water without additives. This is not the case with Bubly Drops. Although they only list "natural ingredients" on the packaging, this is meaningless. Bubly Drops does not exist in the EU (even though SodaStream was a german company until it was recently taken over by PepsiCo), 'cause they are not allowed to just label it as "natural ingredients" there, but have to list every single ingredient. Bubly Drops contains a lot of propane-1,2-diol or propylene glycol for instance, which is an alkanol, just like alcohol, and therefore may harm the liver and kidneys and reduces the fat metabolism. This is exactly what you want to avoid with Air-Up.
People who say you force your cat to be there clearly don't understand that if a cat doesn't want to be somewhere, it will not be there. That good baby *very clearly* loves and trusts you.
I don't care how much I enjoy a youtuber or streamer, I will never buy any sponsored product like this. They're usually just mediocre products with decent marketing.
I made the mistake of spending way over 1000 EUR on Betterhelp after watching a convincing sponsorship at an emotionally vulnerable time. As far as therapy goes, it sucked.
i only consider using sponsored products if i have any way to confirm the quality. The only exception was an energy drink powder product which i kinda took a leap in the dark and got one of those tasting kits with lots of flavors and i've actually liked the product and the price. About air up tho, i never even considered it. It's a blatant overprice (edit: i purchased a steel bottle from a sports brand called decathlon and paid like 25 euros, less than half of the metal air up product) and hydration formulas already exist and are sold by much more respected beverage companies (biggest example i'd say is twinings tea, which is a quite renowned brand). The technology is interesting, but it's clearly a marketing scheme with no intention of putting that technology to any real use at all.
Are you telling me that my MANSCAPED The Lawn Mower 4.0 or my Raycon THE EVERYDAY EARBUDS are just an average product with decent marketing investment??? Whaaaat???
I have one and have for about a year now, idk if it’s different in the US but the in the UK they taste very non-chemical like and very nice and are perfect as a way to make water a bit nicer, yes it’s expensive but I prefer it to squash and will happily paw a price for a nice bottle. Also they advertise the pods as lasting about 20 days but I’ve used some for over 2 months and the flavour barely went away. I get why people are hating on it for the price but I like it for what it is supposed to do and it does it’s job well.
I got it before it went viral and I've never regretted my purchase. As someone who has trouble drinking water (mainly drink soft drinks like Coke Zero) unless very thirsty (e.g. after a workout or in the middle of the night), this tool had provided me with a way of drinking water even when not particulary thirsty and actually being able to hit the "drink 2 liters of water a day". Not all flavours taste good, and some are stronger than others, but for me, I'm very happy with it. Of course it's not for everyone. I guess we just are the target audience and people like @flamingo are not ("Just drink normal water"). It _is_ normal water, just with fake flavour, meaning it's just as healthy as water, just easier to drink.
Yeah I’m confused as hell too and feel like he intentionally made it seem way worse? I’m not gonna lie, they don’t taste like real fruit. But it isn’t nearly as bad as they make it out to be, certainly not vomit. It tastes more like other artificially flavored drinks, just not as strong. Also can’t get over the oH nO tHeY sPiLl WhAt ThE hEcK when they put them upside down without the freaking lid on and he unscrewed the bottle upside down?? Like… come on. What did you expect to happen? You certainly wouldn’t buy a bottle of coke, unscrew it upside down or flip it around only holding the opening shut with your finger and then complain about it spilling? Yes, it is expensive and overhyped. But this whole video is so forced.
@@casandra0 I‘d say actually infused water is better, as they have a more intense taste and are usually sparkly. You can use sparkling water with air up, which will also enhance the infusion a little, but it‘s still quite faint in my opinion. But that’s just my personal preference. It‘s definitely a good option though if you really want pure water without anything in the water itself but still want it to taste like something.
I have a vague guess that these pods contain esters. These are compounds made from organic (or inorganic) acids that, depending on how they are changed, smell like certain foods. A lot of the time they smell fruity. Now very commonly esters are created using butanoic acid, creating butyl esters. Thing is, butanoic acid smells like vomit. And a lot of the time if you have made an ester, getting a good nose full of it will still give you that hint of vomit from the butanoic acid. This would explain the water also tasting like vomit, especially to someone who is sensitive to smells, and why most of the available flavours are fruity in some way or another.
I think you are right. The moment I saw their first advertisement I thought that somebody has to debunk their claims. Something like "No chemicals, no sugar, no bullshit". They also claimed, that you just smell it, so it is not harmful, but healthy. I will remember that, the next time I am breathing something like diethylether or worse things in the lab, or benzine at a gasstation. I would guess that their chemical formulations are not proper tested for safety and human health either because it is no food, but only a "parfume" and you are not supposed to eat it. The worst part is the tons of waste their stupid single use containers create. I think this start-up should just be sued to the ground.
I agree with your analysis that they're made from esters. I can't speak for the US but in the EU pretty much everything has them in them in some capacity. Remember; they do occur naturally in fruits too. I'm very scent sensitive and these work just fine on me, although I haven't tried all the scents mentioned in the video (yet, I have some of them) most of them smells fine albeit artificial to me. We played with butanoic acids in school so I know personally very well what it smells like (and it's not a scent you forget), but for cola, strawberry lemongrass, honeydew melon, and chocolate orange that scent doesn't appear. I have yet to try the other flavours though and these I believe are second gen scents so maybe the first gen scents were just crappy? I will say that honey dew lemon does taste like a chewed out gum when the scent is at the end of it's run.
The amount of youtubers I respect who have good reputations promoting this is now really baffling to me. Kurtis Conner says he uses it every day and he can legitimately taste the flavors. Idk.
Consider that not everyone has anosmia. Pizza smells like vomit to me. Cilantro hits 50/50 for people. It's not a matter of the product working or not, like raycon earbuds. It entirely depends on the olfactory sensitivity of the person using it.
@@miikoshka Raycon earbuds use a single dynamic driver, same as Airpods, Skullcandy, and practically every other earbud on the market. The only way you're going to get a real difference in sound quality is with multi-driver earbuds or headphones.
Yeah and danny Gonzalez getting sponsored by this and helli fresh which are now known to not actually be sustainable or cut costs... Also many youtubers who advertise betterhelp which were expised for being a terrible company... I dont understand
If a bunch of UA-camrs are getting sponsored suddenly, the best you can expect is an expensive version of a good product. Or just a mediocre or bad product with good marketing. If something catches your interest, look into the market, not just the brand being promoted. That's how I ended up with a $30 rigid wallet from Amazon instead of spending $50+ for a Ridge one. And I love it.
Thank you for the review. Here is my knowledge and experience: - The silicon plastic straw/cap thingy doesn't fit perfectly and leaves a little opening every time indeed, but this has a reason. The slurp you hear is caused by this opening. And what it does is: It ensures that some air enters while you drink and that air comes out through the pod. So it's done on purpose. If you just want to have a bottle, you can take the whole straw and silicon top off and use it as a bottle, then it won't spill any water. - I mostly used it with soda water and coke flavor. To be honest I'm impressed. I kinda feel some light coke flavor somewhere. It's not like I'm drinking coca cola, but it 's a bit similar to sodastream + it's pepsi syrup. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it worth it? Don't think so. Was it fun to try? Yes. Do I like the (quality of the) bottle? Yes. Will I buy new (other) pods when I'm done using these? Probably not.
I got one of these probably like 3 years ago. The way I understand it, the pods smell as strong as they do because the amount of smell you inhale while drinking is deceptively small compared to just smelling the pod directly. They're also mean to last for a fair amount of refills so it'd make sense for the pod itself to smell super agressive in order for the actual scent per swig to be balanced / decent. I wasn't blown away by the bottle or the flavors I've had, but I also couldn't deny the legitimacy of the idea behind the bottle. My bottle doesn't leak. Now *my* main issue with the product is that it *will* draw air when drinking, even with no pod inserted. So even if you *do not* want to drink scent and remove the pod, you will inhale a water-air mix. If you're prone to burping easily, this bottle will turn you into an absolute monster. Even pushing the pod in, which is supposed to "disable" the scent, will not sufficiently block the airways to prevent this from happening.
Can't that cause health issues? I'm pretty sure aerophagia(as opposed to breathing air into the lungs like normal) can cause health problems and in some cases sever or dangerous issues?
It is safe to assume that everything promoted on UA-cam is overpriced tat, no matter what your favorite UA-camr says. No hate, as you gotta put dinner on the table.

Hey, watching this from germany. Air up actually originated on the German version of shark tank and was picked up and made big by Frank Thelen who you could basically describe as the German Elon musk. He's known for greed, crazy advertising campaigns aaaand of course products that sound interesting enough to be easy to market but actually under delivery quite heavily. So yeah. No surprises with the airup brand
Calling Frank Thelen the german Elon Musk gives a bit too much credit to Frank imo (I hate both of them btw), allthough I didn't know this incredible product was pushed by him. Makes a lot of sense now lol.
I've been using mine for about a year now and it really does help me to drink more water. Sure it's not as good as actually flavored water (e.g. soda), but it's about on par with tea in my opinion and better than day in day out just water and tea. There's a lot of pods that don't do it for me but I enjoy coconut, forest fruit, and chocolate orange. It's not wow but like I said it does help me drink less soda etc so for me it's worth it.
The only difference between "natural" and "artificial" flavors is whether or not they originally came from a plant/animal/fungus/whatever. They're still isolating a specific chemical and concentrating or diluting it based on the purpose. If a particular molecule has a "chemical" scent or taste to it, then it will have that scent or taste regardless of whether or not it's from a "natural" or "artificial" source.
yep, always find it funny when people say "oh that has natural flavorings" etc. but every chemist will tell u that most often they are literally the same molecule. also find it funny when they say that as an example water has no chemicals inside them, when water itself is a chemical compound and has a plethora of other stuff inside it, since humans dont drink distilled water. just shows who had chemistry and who didnt
That's not really true though. You eating the fruit is completely different because texture probably has an impact on how we perceive tasste but even ignoring that, the chemical composition of the natural product is much more complex than any artificial flavor. So all these little things sum up to make the natural taste when the artifical version is just the raw version that doesn't really compare. It's like just taking CBD and saying it's no different from the actual plant it comes from.
@@w花bi think u are mixing some stuff up here. the thing that clashblaster was talking about, is that if u have a natural and artificial flavour both of these will be the same, bc the molecules have the same structure. he is talking about extracting ONE flavour. what u are talking about is that a fruit will be tasting differently, bc it has more complexity. u are not entirley wrong, but the result of the different flavour isnt in a more complex molecule, but rather many different flavour molecules resulting in a mixture of flavours, which we identify as a specific taste. as an example vanilla. the main flavour u will find in a vanilla pod will be the vanillin. u can either produce it artificially or extract it "naturally" from a vanilla pod. both vanillin molecules, so the artificial one and the extracted one will be the same, be it taste wise or from the molecular structure. but the reason many people say that a vanilla pod tastes better, is bc next to the vanillin there are other flavours. the better taste is not bc the vanillin molecules are different, which many people assume.
@@w花b I'm taking what they say to mean that "it's the same molecule whether or not it's made from natural sources or synthesised in a lab from scratch". Like for example IIRC fake strawberry flavoring is made from wood shavings, which makes it "natural", but it will still taste just as fake so using a "natural" product as a starting point is just a marketing tactic that won't improve the taste. I don't think anyone is arguing that an extract of the actual product (eg powdered freeze dried strawberries) will taste the same as the artificial/natural replacement. Even for things like vanillin which is the main flavor component of vanilla pods and can be cheaply made, real vanilla pods contain more than just that one chemical and that leads to a more complex flavor profile overall.
I totally get why people take their money to promote this shit but you would be crazy as a watcher to actually go out and buy any of the products UA-camrs promote.
the amount of plastic waste you showed reminds me of that futurama joke where fry unboxes 50 things to stamp an oreo together manually only to peel it apart, eat the filling, then throw away the actual cookie.
This thing is so dumb. It's "solving" a problem that doesn't exist and like all stupid solutions it produces a crapton of waste because I can guarantee that that stupid scent pod isn't going to last very long especially if you're not using the bottle all day every day to get the most out of the pod.
Accurate 🤣👏 If you never watched that episode you don't know how ON point & accurate this comment is. All that plastic, but instead of cookie filling it's for water... circa 2024 😆
I hope you do more things in this series, I would adore to see someone review common UA-cam sponsorships in an unbiased manner. I also adore your cat. She seems like a sweetheart.
Neat. Basically every youtube sponsor is suspicious because of all the ones that have turned out to be scams, and it's just like "hey guys this company paid me to tell you this product is good but trust me when I tell you it's good"
that is upsetting, cuz matpat said it was good T_T Sad they kind of sell out as well, and he kind of promotes air up, in almost every video he was in before he retired, (ever since he got the sponsor)
@@McQuackeen dude. matpat has always been a joke. the guy has been making shit videos for decades. the guy never had ANY integrity. but I'm glad you found out now.

But thats only if its a dumb product that doesn't change anyone's life. Because that's just capitalism. When it's something like BetterHelp, where its seeking out vulnerable people and taking advantage of them....
I understand UA-camrs need to make an income so I don't hold it against them for hawking what I deem "UA-cam products", but to be honest, whenever there's a random product that suddenly pops up in a ton of UA-camrs' different videos all at once, it's pretty much a safe bet to assume it's a scam and/or shit tier product, especially if it's not a mainstream brand.
Not always true it’s just hard to tell what is and isn’t the case A lot of these UA-camrs are probably being scammed too without knowing it Or maybe every person just reacts differently like pineapple pizza idk
It is not okay to make income through shady, harmful or deceptive methods. That's like saying, "''I understand why they robbed a bank and hurt people, they're poor trying to make a living!"
Thats exactly what i think i guess it has a different effect to everyone there are the one who like it like me and there are others who dont like the smell/taste and think its scam just because its not as someone expected does not make a scam
No I think the scam part is: - The bottles are super expensive but no matter what version you get they leak like crazy - The pods themselves are also ridiculously expensive and they charge even more for flavors people are likely to want to try first
@@lizzytheowl577 bro I really cannot read this comment without cringing myself inside out. I own about 12 different Strawbased Waterbottles each and every single one of those has a whole in its lit to let the air inside so u don't suck a vacuum while using it. Too late! I tried the Air up myself a year ago. The promise of "flavour" for water without having to mix something into the water itself was enticing. The water where I live tastes like garbage, and mixing flavouring into the water makes the inside of a bottle go sticky and nasty after a few months - so keeping it to "just water" and using another system for flavour was enticing to me. I tried it for a month and I had about ten of my friends test it. Two of the ten people I tested it with (not me) could actually get a pleasant flavour from the air up, the other eight couldn't really taste anything. The bottle itself is fairly okay as a water bottle, it's honestly nice quality for a plastic bottle, and not that much more expensive than other bottles of similar quality. The "leak hole" is so air can get into the bottle, almost all straw bottles have some way for air to get in while you're using the straw. I found the large heavy cap frustrating to twist on and off so often, and the seal is so tight that it's honestly awkward to open and re-fill. I switched to a vacuum insulated bottle for my water, a Chinese knockoff of a hydroflask, and it's great. A properly insulated bottle keeps water colder for longer, and it's done much better for me - keeping my tap water ice-cold kills the bad flavour it has. I ended up gifting the air-up to someone it worked for.
I agree with your points, i live in germany and got it in 2019 or 2020 it worked for me (fine) but after some time i ran out of pods and don't use it any more. Still have it.
Whenever I see any youtube sponsorship I just assume it's either a scam, the company is extremely abusive to its employees or a nice, healthy mix of both lmao
Adam Ragusea has explicitly stated in non-sponsored videos that he only takes sponsor opportunities from things that he actually would use, so things like Magic Spoon, Squarespace, some probiotic and testing stuff. Knowing that makes me trust the sponsors a bit more, but they're still not really things that I would personally need or use.
i don't understand why anyone would choose this over just putting a handful of fruit in your water bottle. that would be cheaper, more consistent, and actually taste natural because it is natural. the literal only thing i can think of as a point for air up is that cleaning the fruit out of the bottle might be annoying and you'd have to clean your bottle more. but also they do make water bottles with inserts specifically for fruit so i feel like that kinda helps solve that problem
@@falloutfreek1992Yes but just having fruit pieces sitting in your water is going to give your water bagels any calories. It’s not like if you added juice or smooshed up the fruit and added it.
I found the idea interesting so I checked it out. When I discovered that you had to pay $8 for rings that would only last a couple of bottles, I decided it wasn't even remotely worth the price even if it worked exactly as advertised.
Well, I have an Air Up, the cartridges have lasted me for gallons of water for weeks on end. I've had no problems with taste or quality, honestly, it is really good for the price.

I never tried it myself, but I remember my psychology teacher drinking from one of their products back when corona started. She said she really liked it because her sense of taste hasn't come back, but because of the smelling part she was able to ''taste'' again. I think that, in corona times, this was a fantastic product since it actually had a reasonable purpose but after gaining your taste back - it doesn't really make sense. Also, as a German, I swear we normally make better product I am sorry
Its not a bad product, they simply need to listen to their consumers. Clearly a lot of ppl do like it, they could just refine their formula to have more mass appeal, obviously more natural flavors.
@brendolbreadwar2671 I think in this case, making it for a broader audience would lead to a dilution of the brand. A lot of comments already pointed out that it's not a product everyone can enjoy - simply because certain smell receptors are missing. So I don't think AirUp would benefit from a mass approach, but more so from higher quality of the actual product and less plastic (so they can actually keep their promise). Refining, yes, but refining for the already existing customers
Rule of thumb is simple: if a UA-camr is paid to tell you that something is good, then it's likely bad or at least overhyped. Kamikoto knives, Air Up, literally every VPN service out there, etc, etc.

as someone who ate an air freshener as a kid those flavors exactly line up with that childhood trauma, my guess is instead of using flavor extracts which are ok to eat they instead used the same principals as a car air freshener which is why it tasted better the night after since car air fresheners are in a methanol solution (so they evaporate) whist flavor extracts are in vegetable glycerine (which don't evaporate)
companies arent required to meet regulations to slap "green" and "Eco friendly" and "recycled product!" on their products. In fact, a lot of companies will take their scrap material and put it back into rotation and call that a recycled product. So, probably, most of these 'recycled' water bottles we see are just non-waste water bottles. This practice is called industrial recycling rather than consumer recycling which is recycling materials that have gone out to the consumer been used and are now being made into something else. The more transparency and information a business shows on HOW they are green or HOW or WHAT is being recycled, the better.
The notion of "recycling" doesn't actually exist as advertised at all. We're currently recycling less than a fourth of the plastic we use and the recycle symbol isn't actually a recycle symbol, it's just a plastic ident (several videos online about it). Basically, only aluminium, steel and glass are ok. Even paper goods are not that eco friendly as they seem.

I actually liked my Air Up bottle and it got me drinking a lot more water. Let make some points. 1. The flavours can be hit or miss, some I like and some were disgusting. They tend to be better after a day of use and not so potent. 2. A downside is the bottle or the top can gather mould very quickly and you need to clean it regularly and usually comes with a brush you can clean inside the mouth piece. 3. The marketing and UA-camrs are overreacting with the flavours and saying it’s extremely tasty. The taste is very subtle and they are straight up lying that it’s like drinking the a real fruit juice. 4. If you going to buy one, do so when they have an offer on or you have discount codes. I personally like some of the flavours but not all, it did get me drinking more water and I enjoy the subtle taste. They do need to make improvements with the bottles not getting so easily mouldy and if possible, not to leak when tipped over. However, the small hole serves a purpose in letting the scent into your water.

I own an airup, but a European one... The packages of the flavors for us look different, well mainly the backside, which gets me wondering if there is perhaps a difference in their approach to the "american" pods. You see, as someone who works in the import/export of genuine food and candy I know north American rules surrounding chemicals and flavors are much more toned down, and thus cheaper options are a common practice. An example would be how Europe has strict rules on Yellow 5 and 6 (E102 and E110), as they are potentially harmful food colorings, however in the US there is no rules prohibiting their use at all and thus this cheap compound is used often. In Europe, however, they replace it with E160 or Beta-Carotene, a much healthier but in fact more expensive to produce coloring derived from carrots. I've got quite a few friends who also enjoy their airup bottle, and the flavors, although a common ground of complain is certainly the unusual profit margins on the pods and bottles. None of us have the issues with plasticy flavors, nor do we have the incredibly poor produced lid! Is it scaling? Is it localization? Did they increase margins even more? I'm curious, because your review is so vastly different than the wide pool of people I've met here...
I have one too, also in Europe. The most people I know with the airup, including myself, really enjoy it, so I was a little confused by the reactions in the video. I do think that they are a pain in the ass to clean though. I drink way more than the recommended 5L with one pod, as I drink at least 2L a day and I use one pod for a week easily. Even though they get less scent/taste after a few days, I still like it more than just water and it prevents me from drinking lemonade all day.
@@MadBradz It's the exact same for me, I got angry watching this video trashing on this brand because it actually helped me drink less sodas and I actually do like the tastes, even though I actually believe that the ones used in that video are not the best (best ones would be something like Lime which has a strong and good taste). Now I am curious between their differences. This video for some reason made me want to try it more, for myself, to see if it really is awful. However, I am from the UK so I would get the European one too. I wonder if there is a way to order some US Pods to this country?
That's exactly what I thought it would be. A lot of people taste through their sense of smell and also don't have an issue with chemical candle smells. Yeah they're falsely advertising that you're not putting chemicals in the water you're just breathing them in instead.
Moreover, them saying no chem is just an immediate red flag, as chemicals are the reason flavor exists. Just saying that makes it feel like they are hiding something.

I’m so happy someone is finally talking about it! I ordered the starter set and bottle like a year ago, and I am not the type of person to get headaches, like at all. I have a headache once a year, maybe, and it’s usually when I have a fever above 39C. I got a splitting headache after about 5 sips. It tasted like crap and chemicals, and I felt like I got poisoned with the headache that followed. The worst part though? I had to fight tooth and nail for about 3 weeks for them to give me a refund, and that was also after I sent the bottle back. In the end they didn’t even fully refund me, despite me sending the product back, having used 1 pod from each of the three flavours and having the bottle in my possession for a grand total of about a week. Moral of the story? SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE (literally) and do not support this ridiculous company.

I used it for a few months on and off. After all, I came to the conclusion it's not worth it because of the cost of the pods. In my experience, there are two types of pods. The ones that taste awful, like you experienced, which seems to be the majority of pods, and the ones that taste good for like a day, and then almost lose their taste entirely. BTW, I didn't like any of the pods you tested either. The leaking was never an issue for me. I did notice it, but if you only move it with the cap on and remove the cap upright it was a non-issue for me. Then again, that was during the pandemic and I didn't leave the house much.
I bought an Air Up bottle in a drug store, which was much cheaper than in the online shop, and I also got me three apple scented pods. They didn't work for me, because I could not smell the scent at all (but my husband does). I don't want to produce that much plastic garbage, so I decided to buy some natural orange essential oil and a syringe to reload the pods. Still doesn't work for me, but that's because my smelling sense seems to be bad, which I didn't realize before. For other users, uploading the pods with essential oils might be an option, but be sure to use food-safe oils. About the extra hole in the rim of the bottle: it must be there because that's where the air gets in when you drink from the straw. The bottle has to be transported in an upright position, and that's also what they say in the manual.
the bottle should have a big lid over this sucking thing, and when you put the lid on it, the leak is sealed and then you can have it in any position in your backpack and its safe
Hey Hipyo, a german here. This product was a huge flop over here. It was a startup that originated from the german equivalent of shark tank, "die Höhle der Löwen" i.e. "The Lion's cave". Frank Thelen, the main investor of the company is a joke in german TV and his work on air up is considered a meme over here, called "Thelen rennt" i.e. "Thelen runs".
That is funny as hell, unfortunately people here in america are stupid and don't do research before buying things, so we get crappy companies with good marketing. Hence, Air Up garbage
Little explanation to this, Thelen was asked a critical question regarding Air Up on an event, and instead of trying to answer it he just ran away. Question was: „When you were investing in Air Up, did you already know that they can‘t prove some of their main promises?“ For example, they said that their plastic pods are from recycled plastic, which they are, in fact, not.
I never trust anything that talks about "chemicals" like that, just straight up marketing BS relying on an inadequate understanding of basic chemistry.
that's not what they're saying, though. what they're getting at is that the water you end up drinking itself is untouched, fucking obviously the scent pods have chemicals in them. the product is a water bottle that doesn't hold water, you shouldn't be scrambling this hard to clutch onto some fragment of a thing to misinterpret about it.
The states like to leave their citizens at a grade 4 level of education so you'll have to excuse the massive amounts of ignorance and general stupidity
The gap that causes the leak is actually because the product relies on an inlet flow of air- I remember reading reviews that found the same issue months ago. This isn't even something they could easily fix in design- having any sort of one-way valve that could withstand water leakage would mean the air is much harder to draw into the bottle, not to mention there would be less 'flavour' from the other inlet. AirUp, fundamentally, is a flawed product that no respectable product designer would have brought to market.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE

The hydroflask solved that issue forever ago (quite easily) with the design of their strawcap, this company sucks ass.

For everyone saying he “didn’t assemble the bottle correctly” and that’s why it’s leaking, Air Up LITERALLY states on their website that any tilting will cause the water bottle to spill.
No it says could, and mine doesn't in fact spill. If you close the pod correctly. I've never had a drop spill.
@@ethanv7330good for you
@@ethanv7330lol, so what’s your thoughts on the product?
@@ethanv7330It leaks with or without the pods installed. Having the pod in an open or closed position doesn't change its' thickness as it is a constant width, it's plastic. The gasket itself is leaking, so if the mere presence of a pod is enough to solve the leaking issue, there would be no issue. At the end, you can even see him try and push the pod down further to stop it from shaking all over his clothes. Just like his male friend did when he spilled it. This is a common occurrence.
@@TheRealLACIf I had to guess it’s just an issue with some sealing better than others causing the different responses on this!

Honestly, if I see UA-camrs advertising it, then I already assume it's garbage.

I did my research and decided on Sony WF-C700Ns instead, and they've been perfect
The point is, youtube sponsorships are a terrible way to make decisions on purchases, you can never expect someone who's being paid by a product to be objective about the product.

It's insane that any company would think it's a good idea to make those kinds of claims.

@@noblesseoblige319 exactly what your comment says it’s actually weird cuz I can smell things in unscented things

But this whole video is so forced.
i agree, im from germany (origin of the bottle) and you can buy everything in stores here. my brother has one and tbh its pretty good.
Is this better than any other flavored or infused water? I usually drink bubly as a soda alt.
This is a great breakdown of why this thing sucks. It screams "gimmick product" through and through.
Butanoic acid is a carboxylic acid. Esters end in -oate not -oic acid
isnt that acid also the one that's in hershey chocolate and that's why a lot of foreigners think american chocolate taste like vomit?

Thank you for the review. Here is my knowledge and experience:
- The silicon plastic straw/cap thingy doesn't fit perfectly and leaves a little opening every time indeed, but this has a reason.
Man, that sounds horrific.
Can't that cause health issues? I'm pretty sure aerophagia(as opposed to breathing air into the lungs like normal) can cause health problems and in some cases sever or dangerous issues?
Burp lovers are winning with the Air Up.
you can put your finger over the scent hole to stop it from letting air in
"it will draw air when drinking"
That goes beyond being a scam and veers directly into actively malicious design.

I've been using mine for about a year now and it really does help me to drink more water.
@@w花byep, actual vanilla vs artificial vanilla is an example
Those 2 has no idea what they're talking about
@@w花b I'm taking what they say to mean that "it's the same molecule whether or not it's made from natural sources or synthesised in a lab from scratch".

@brendolbreadwar2671 I think in this case, making it for a broader audience would lead to a dilution of the brand. A lot of comments already pointed out that it's not a product everyone can enjoy - simply because certain smell receptors are missing. companies arent required to meet regulations to slap "green" and "Eco friendly" and "recycled product!" on their products.

Glad to see that i'm not the only one surprised by this bad review ! I guess it's actually the difference between EU and US. Another damn point on which I prefer being European then lmaooo
@@mattwinther5112I blame Capitalism and company greed lol. Companies are really getting out of hand with product quality. Which I'm also assuming drives regulations on what can and cannot be used here like that yellow food coloring mentioned just to make a product as cheaply as possible so companies can make top dollar.
Now I am curious between their differences. This video for some reason made me want to try it more, for myself, to see if it really is awful. However, I am from the UK so I would get the European one too. I wonder if there is a way to order some US Pods to this country?
@@jasminappleby779 same. Without the need to try the obviously worse American version … ;-)

Can you just like lit "the oil" and drink from any bottle? I mean as long you can smell it, you'll taste the scent anyway... That how it works right?
