I walked into my local grocery store and the floral department clerk was setting up a new display. My heart started racing when I saw what it was! It said "Variety" on the box from a local nursery and oh my goodness it sure was. I got a Thai Constellation, Paraiso Verde, Silver Sword and a huge Prince of Orange. The best part, $5.99 and absolutely luscious plants.
What grocery store was it? I always check my local pick n save but rarely find anything really cool. I still always check hoping that day will be the day haha
I remember my mind being blown early last year finding about 10 whale fins in my local grocery store for $12! 😮💨 That particular store always had great plant finds. Also snagged a 12inch hanging pot of Micans for $14 the year before.
I had the best rare plant day everrrrr at my Home Depot tooo! I actually passed on some plants cuz I couldn’t afford them all lol. My Home Depot is notorious for never having anything so maybe these aren’t “rare” to other people but to me I scored big time. I picked up a huge silver string of hearts, a ric rac cactus/orchid cactus, Hoya sp. aff Burtonia variegated, Hoya tricolor wayettii, and a Hoya fitchii. I left behind a Hoya autumn blush, Hoya lacunosa mint, and a Hoya gracilis. I did go back the next day and get them tho! Haha there was also a really beautiful philodendron that I still don’t know what it was. It was from Hampshire farms and it was just labeled onyx. If anyone knows what that is let me know. I also want to let all the Midwest people know that I live in Wisconsin. I feel like a lot of us in Wisconsin/Michigan and this area usually never have good finds like this but I’ve been noticing a lot online from other people in this area there’s been a boom of good finds in the big box store. So go look!
About combined planter, I completely agree with Ashley. Some in the planter clearly are not as robust and have different needs. Usually the most interesting ones are the ones become lost first.
Three years ago, I bought one of those cute small Exotica.Three years later, it is a 4 ft. Tree that has been chopped more than once.I can't get it to stop growing. So happy for your move.No more Pikes, but I hope you find other exciting places to plant shop.Thank you so much I greatly enjoyed this.
Just got a Gloriosum for $15 at HD today. It's growing so far over the pot I have the end resting in another pot to root. I will probably end up with 3 plants when its all propogated. Best plant purchase I have gotten yet.
On Friday I found a white wizard philo AND a white princess philo at Walmart! And two weeks ago I found a pink princess philodendron at a different Walmart, she was $20 and the whites were both $15!
Thank you so much for your videos! I’ll always check the BBS after you post videos to see what I can score. Thanks to your tip, I found myself a Gloriosum (never could afford it in the past), a Mamei and a White Princess!
I went to Lowes and Home Depot I picked up 2 hoyas the Gloriosum, croton, and one w/o name they had so much but like you I didn't want to pick up duplicates today
In Western Australia Monstera Thai constellation came out in a big box shop (the big green shed Aussie know who i mean) 1.5 years ago big ones were $225 and small ones $98. Now down to $60 for small ones
Hi Ashley, Thank you for this fun and exciting plant shopping video! So many more rare plants available and a nice selection of plants in general. Great job! 👌🪴🥰
Yeah, last time I went to my Lowe's, 75% of the cactus were dead, houseplants, they had the same variety for months with most of them dried and dead. Lucky you!
Hey there !!! Love the video !!! You will be missed in Charlotte but super happy for this chapter for you ! Michigan got it going on !!! Big box store is popping with goodies .
14:34 I love seeing videos of other plant people at big box stores! I go around trying to remember the scientific names just like you and yeah, my family and friends don’t understand what I’m yapping on about 😅
All of my Syngonium just grow straight upwards so I thought that too but then I saw Harli G's big Syngonium and saw that they actually can trail over the side of the pot. Hers is gorgeous
I believe you were right about the one hoya being a Rosita. The other that you thought might be an Elliptica, I believe is a Fitchii. I have both Elliptica and Fitchii and actually really prefer the Fitchii. It's an awesome plant. Over a week ago, Jaclynn from Jaclynn's Jungle found several Anthurium Silver Blush at a Home Depot!! I would have lost my mind at that one. I haven't bothered to go to my local HD looking for it. First, their selection is generally terrible. Second, I was traveling for work last week, so I couldn't run right out. By the time that I got back, I knew -- if my local HD had gotten them in -- they would have been scooped up by then. But keep looking! You tend to get luckier than I ever do.
That hoya is called Hoya Fitchii. I LOVE THEM!! When I heard Home Depot had them I rushed over in a rain storm with groceries to pick them up lol! I bought 3 of them so I can make a nice full plant :). I bought a small Fitchii online a few months ago for $50!!
The living stones cacti like water in spring and fall, dry in summer and winter when they are dormant. I found a Gloriosum a little over a year ago at Menard's for $15. There were 3 growing points and right away it filled a 24" trough. I bought a 4 foot long trough and by this spring it was full. So I chopped and propped and now I have 4 big pots of it for sale and the 3 pieces I kept are being forced up a netted cedar plank filled with aroid mix. It looks fabulous....we will see how it does come winter in my fairly shady plant room. Those huge velvety leaves are just so beautiful!! I would have gotten that Jungle Boogie, although I have a small Ring of Fire which I think is the variegated form of the Boogie? One more comment; the 'Silver dragon' alocasia does not attract spider mites like 'Polly' and 'Yucatan Princess' do. Also 'Melo' seems to resist them well. Now that you bought the $15 Gloriosum, your avg cost is only $157.50 each. Feel any better? You look great, best of luck there in Michigan. Love to watch the shopping videos because I am 60 miles away from any big box stores.
Soooo I'm from Dallas, Texas and there are channels on UA-cam (Growfolds) that has found Thai Constellation Monstera at Costco! Not sure if you have a Costco in your area but if so, you may want to check them out! P.s. I love your channel and I'm glad you got your peace back. Happy plant hunting and many MANY blessings💚🪴💚
Ashley! You are like that incredible friend that's such a bad influence! LOL. Grabbing my keys and heading to HD... again. They've had whale fins here for several months and I did grab a small (4 in) Thai for 29.99 at HD a few weeks ago. Costco had large (8 inch pot) Thais for 42.99 so I grabbed several of those. Question... I always keep my new plants separate for 2 weeks and wipe them down but should I automatically use insecticidal soap or something... and treat with mosquito bits? What is your typical routine when you bring a plant home for best success? Thanks for sharing... love your videos.
I snagged a gloriousum at my local HD two weeks ago. I also found a red stemmed Billie half price. Wow! Inside HD, there was a special plant display by the cash registers. I found a fairly large Euphorbia lactea variegata and a large euphorbia horrida hybrid in the cutest grey/beige stone pots. My best plant hall ever! I’m still chasing those illusive anthuriums at HD and Lowe’s. Maybe next week. 😊
Been seeing whale fin at 2 Home Depot. I found a few at Home Depot with 2 fins in a 6 inch pot. I got one and separated it the next day. Only $19.99. One fin measure 13 X 4 1/2 and the other one 15 X 5 1/2. Good deal compare to the one you were showing in a smaller pot.
I went to giant Tiger on Friday, and I found a philodendron ring of fire. I also found a small ZZ plant and then I went to our local greenhouse and found a huge ravens zz
Ashley what great selections and sale prices. I'm going to go look tomorrow to see if I can find some of the Espicias. I picked up a small one early this summer but it was just the basic one. I really do love them. I'm keeping my eyes out for a used aquarium to put them in this winter to try and keep them alive.
Ashley I found a H.Wayetii var @ my HD last Fridayfor 5.98,Which is very rare cause normally all they have is common houseplants. They have they to had the ficus 1/2 off.And in the Succulent area they had pretty big Hoyas(heart leaf margin and pubicalix)
I was wondering which plant you paid $300 for. P. gloriosum was available 4/5 years ago for $30 or so from Ecuagenera. Now I see them at the Union sq farmers market in nyc for $15. Same for Philodendron billiettae. But my favorite uncommon Philodendrons are the P. esmeraldense, that quickly develops very large leaves. Philodendron lentii, which I just got, it has beautiful pleated leaves, yet they are leathery and thick, so probably very adaptable to an apartment Philodendron Esmeralda Spirit seems great as well looks like its parent P. esmeraldense, but it’s more vigorous and has short internodes like the other parent P. spiritus-sancti. The Philodendron Splendid is also great. The primary hybrids seem less fussy and way more vigorous than their parents.
With the living stones, you have to not water then until one day you walk by and gasp wondering when the last time was 😅 they love an east window too. Watch chain is about the same way
I have a problem with growing some of these Plants in my home....Dieffenbachia, Syngoniums, Fiddle leaf fig, Ponytail Palm, Banana Plant, Pepperomia, Anthuriums, Money Trees, types of Philodendrons, they'll start off growing and then they'll start dying off...... I've bought these plants so many times......
Lovely shopping trip! I always feel a bit nervous to ask, but is Claire still with you? I think I focus on that bc I lost some furry family this year and am always hoping no one else is feeling that pain.
Oh man me too. I’ve never experienced this kind of deep deep grief. My dogdaughter I was with for over 13 years passed 6 months ago and the heartbreak hasn’t lessened at allll
What would you say if I told you I found a whole bunch of monstera Thai constellations for $24.99 at BJ'S. They were about the size as the gloriossum you showed us.
Yes, gloriosum is a crawler. I have one currently and it's about to crawl out of its long box. I want to bend the growing tip to point it back into the box, but it's too stiff. I think I'm going to have to propagate the leading tip and then chop it off and replant it into the same box.
I recently scored a couple rare succulents at a big box store. QUESTION: does anyone know WHY we are able to make these great finds in a big box stores from time to time? Why don't the growers hold these back, instead of including them in bulk shipments of regular/non-rare varieties? Thanks!

@@user-kr911 I've found great deals in the floral departments of QFC, Safeway and Trader Joe's.
@user-kr911 I'm in Nebraska, it was at a Baker's (Kroger).
I love that you highlight the cactus section. A lot of other content creators that do big box videos pass over the cactus section.Thank you!
Love them!
I found a whale fin last winter and now it’s growing another fin! Love Love Love
I think it must be Michigan’s way to welcome you to the state and making you feel at home❤️
Your excitement is contagious!! I’m new to plants and find your videos super informative. Thanks
I'm so glad!
I just found your channel yesterday and am loving it!!!! You're teaching me all the proper names of all the plants in my collection!
So glad you like the channel! I love learning new plant names too!
