Philodendron plowmanii is a great example on how a plant adapts according to its environment. Based on my experience, P. plowmanii would produce leaves with more silver streaks if placed on a brighter light and vice versa.
looking at the growth pattern of the Silver Cloud I bought a couple of weeks ago (12 bucks at the local nursery!!), I would agree with what you're saying in the video. Mine's definitely more of a climber than a crawler. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that there's e.g. a Sodiroi in the mix here, that would explain its more heart-shaped leaves and also why it sometimes can be a crawler like the Mamei but other times more of a climber
I’m glad to hear you also water your plants about once a week. I hear so many people saying they water them 2/3 times a week but even though I have a very chunky soilmix, I can’t water more often than once a week because the soil stays moist
you are my plant guru and I am following your advice on soils and moss poles. once I live in a place with more space I would love to add crawlers to my collection. They are stunning

5:12 i did similar experiment but with anthurium radicans (the pure species one, not the radicans x luxurians which sometimes sold as radicans). I made little "pole" from half of plastic cup and put wire over the cut side, then fill it with aroid mix. So far, so good... It definitely rooted to the "pole" and starting to climb. The reason i did it : since anthurium radicans is a crawler and have relatively small leaf and short petiole... the optimal viewing is from the top and i put all of my anthuriums on a shelf atm. Some people actually let them trail down from the pot, which is nice too. But the hanging part of the plant won't likely to put out any roots and i feel like it's a waste of nodes 😂

Good video, what a great idea with the rectangle self watering….here is my question, I’ve never known for my plants to have spider mites. But at times I’ve had pests eat part or leaves or sucked the life out of a leaf. I am not familiar with spider mites, do you think it’s possible to get them on video so we can see what they look like? And what do they do to the plants ? Thank you in advance
Thanks :) They are very small so you probably won’t really see them but you can usually tell by small ‘spiderwebs’ forming on your plant edges or yellowing edges of leaves with lots of tiny dots. They essentially suck the life out of the plant :P i’m sure you can find some close ups of them on google :)
WOWZERS! Do you make your own aroid mix, or purchase a bag of it? I mixed up some orchid mix, perlite, with potting soil? My plowmanii doesn’t even look to be growing, for the past year! 8” inch long petiole, no ruffles yet. Not one leaf yet! Had one leaf, when I got the starter plant. Lost it! I’m going to try a terra cotta pot for her?!
I dont know why it never occurred to me to cut my Gloriosum like that and leave it in the pot. I've cut "top cuts" many times to sell to make more room but never did mid cuts. Great idea! Mine is so big at this point it's outgrown the usual long/skinny pots like you use and I've got it in a gigantic square pot. But it's not very filled out. That would be a great way to fill out the width of the pot. Crawlers are the only tropical I grow that make me wish I lived further south in Florida so I could put them outside in the ground. They are so amazing but take up so much space.

Hi Jan, what do use on yr velvet leaves to deter/kill spidermites? Reason I'm asking is because when I wipe my velvet leaves with my natural pest mix the leaves get linty and become dull.
How do you manage them when they crawl towards end of the pot ? Sure, its easier to grow climbing plant, we have 2.5m ceilings but not 2.5m wide pots. Do you just cut it and let it be ? What will happen then ? They will be like that for years or they will push new leaves from existing node ? Im basically interested how long crawlers can live in pot before totally limiting them to grow more. ♥
The Philodendron Pastazanum can definitely withstand more light! Mine is 1.5 - 2 meters away from a south facing window, the internodes are really short and the leafes are getting sooo big😍 ~40cm

At what point should I put it in? Should I let it be in a round container? Uppot it as it crawls into larger round pots and then once it’s bigger, put it into a rectangle? 🤔
I think you're overthinking it :) Don't give it a ridiculously large pot but especially with the rectangular pots you don't need to worry too much :) Happy growing :)

Grow with nature, not against it. So i wouldn’t
How big is the ’silver cloud‘ today and did it work?
She’s growing in the garden now :) no, it didn’t work
@@sydneyplantguy Thanks, because I asked myself the same question at Gloriosum
Do you fertilise just during growing season?
Yes, but growing season is all year long :)
How do the roots not get root rot sitting in the water in the pan?
Root rot is caused by bacteria, not water :)
@@sydneyplantguy That makes sense, thank you!!
Can anyone tell me more examples of crawling Philodendrons?
Where do you get your plants or seeds? I really want many of the plants I see in your videos and there's so many places but I'm looking for a good reliable place where I can purchase healthy plants!
If you’re in australia check out Growing Grounds (@growinggrounds on IG)
@@sydneyplantguy Thank you so much!! I'll definitely check it out! 😁 Btw I absolutely love your UA-cam/Instagram pages.. You're very informative and your plant family are spectacular!!!❤❤ Thank you for sharing it all with us!
One of my McDowell leaves is looking very sad. It is the latest leaf to come in. It almost looks like it is wilting? The other leaves are fine with a new one coming in. I have no idea why this is happening. Any ideas?
Sounds like pests. The fresh leaves are the yummiest!!
@@sydneyplantguy I was hoping you wouldn't say that! I just got done battling spider mites a month ago. Fun times! 😩
My mc dowell has a full pink leaves is it normal
is this gloriosom or gloriosom verde?
Which pots are you using for your gloriosum? Is it lechuza?
They are linked in the description :)
@@sydneyplantguy ah thanks for the fast answer I must overread it 😅
Great video and very informative as always! I have two questions : what is the size of your rectangular pots in centimetres! Please. How much light you give to your plowmanii? I live in UK and mine sits on my Sohth facing windowsill but the inter nodal spacing is larg, so wondering how much sun does your one gets.
Link to the pot is in the description:) and i included a bit where you see where these plants normally live so you have an indication how much light they might get but impossible to say without having actially measured the light. I’d say it gets bright indirect light but on the shadier side.
Would a moss pole benefit the plowmanii?
It’s a crawler so it doesn’t need one :)
@@sydneyplantguy thank you! Someone told me to put one on mine as it will encourage growth but I found I had to manipulate it so badly to attach to the pole so I took it out and let it be free
I have a silver cloud, it is definitely a climber, not a crawler
Put charcoal to avoid mites
Do you keep them inside the house or green house? Thanks
Indoors :)
Do you have humidifier too? Thanks
Oh pls ...don't show me those...Ct from Malaysia...🤩🤩🤩
