  • Today we are going over an issue that has been recently discussed in the B58 community, but that some of us have been aware of for over a year. Please watch with caution, this is not meant to instill fear but merely to inform the general population that this issue exists. It is also important to note that this issue has been observed most commonly in cylinder 1 but not isolated to it. it has been observed in other cylinders as well. This issue is also not isolated to high HP cars as it has been observed on stock calibration and unopened engines.

I was the first one to my knowledge that had this happen. It's caused by bolt fatigue. It is a real thing, the bigger issue is that BMW does not reproduce the cam bridge. I have spares if anyone needs a cam bridge.

I have seen some cam ledges fail even with the stronger 10.8 tensile strength bolts so I’m
Not fully convinced it is caused by bolt fatigue, but I do think it could be a contributor for the issue.

@NoClutchGarage Well, let me rephrase that. Mine broke under fatigue, we took a hard look at my bolt. That was the census on mine. Mine broke about a 1/8 inch inside the head. That was odd in itself, now mine was the first one and we figured that one had the most stress. Now you had said, other ones had failed further back. Need to have them reproduced with maybe 7078 definitely something other than cast aluminum. Probably there is liability. Like I said, I looked into having them CNC-milled. Nobody I spoke to wanted to touch them. What did you end up doing? Same as me?

@@mattpowers3081 Yeah I gave my old head and swapped out a cam ledge. Not the ideal thing to do as you know but I was desperate to figure out a solution short of having some custom billet ones made and going through the trouble of line honing the head. I do agree with you that number 1 is the most often culprit as there is no good amount of support there as there is towards the cam sprocket.

What oil were you running? You think there might be a common oil weight for this? I've heard of people hearing the cams less after going 5w40. Wonder if TU and TU2 cam ledges were changed

This has happened on Gen 1 and TU, I have not heard of anything on TU2 but the whole intake and exhaust side has been reworked. I use 5W-40 oil

Lol, I don’t think it should be anything to worry about, just be aware it can fail.
