Hello everyone, the 1st part of East NY is here: ua-cam.com/video/PJ5gNoOFUaw/v-deo.html
    Content Update:
-I have an Amish series coming soon.
-I'm hoping to do a series on Appalachia (the left behind part) and Native Americans (hopefully the Navajo Nation but I'm open to other tribes).
Do any of you have contacts of interesting characters that want to bring me into Appalachia or the Native American world?
If so please email me at: contact@petersantenello.com

I was born Crownheights and raised in ENY but left during the early 90's. It was always a rough neighborhood but it doesn't look as bad as it once did. The 70's were good, but the 80's things got fucked up. Believe it or not, NYPD had a hand in making that neighborhood even more dangerous than it was with them getting into the crack game. The 75th was the most disgusting and corrupt cops. They even made a documentary about it. ua-cam.com/video/adZaHShRa3A/v-deo.html
Back in my day it was always diverse, with some Italians and Irish still in the hood. Pitkin ave was mostly Ricans from Doscher st to Crescent ave. The projects were always mostly black.
I use to play at the construction site that was Linden Plaza, climbed ropes all the way to the roof. Crazy shit but I loved it back then. Thanks for doing this and letting me look at my old hood. Stay safe.

When you watch Peter's videos you almost forget it's a "one man show"! Really good interviews and always good camera shots and always good sound. Not to mention how close his gets with the people he interviews. He puts them at ease while not putting himself in the easiest of situations.
Watching his films you just forget that he does everything by himself!

The elder gentleman was insightful about not having any adults to show him how to live a decent life. He looked back on his life and realized if he would have taken a different path in life the outcome would have been vastly different. I liked how he pointed out that there are multiple paths to take in life and each produces a different outcome....whether positive or negative. Hopefully his wisdom may help a younger person learn from his mistakes.

Sadly most people don't learn by listening -- they learn by experiencing. Then they think they can try to prevent the same thing from happening to others by sharing their story, and I mean maybe it is true in some cases, but most people it's lost on them if their heart is set on doing that sort of thing to begin with. That and in poorer communities especially like it's hard to listen to the old man with nothing and look at the "honest folks" that take a bus to their job that pays them nothing at McDonalds and the only ones who have anything are out there living "that life". It's really sad but the lack of role models that are positive is definitely a huge issue for the black community.

I grew up in the projects in the South Bronx and my cousins lived in these projects in East New York. Our parents kept our home spotless, all of us had love and our neighbors were like our family. Our elders were everything. The honor code of the streets is real. People had multiple jobs hustles putting food on the table. I live in Rome now married to a Sicilian/ Roman in a lovely apartment in Rome's city center. But seeing this makes me oddly homesick. People don't understand that as hard as the streets are, there's so much love and beauty. The projects made me, no matter what Universities I went to, no matter where I am in the world the people of these neighborhoods in NYC are forever the biggest part of me. Respect and love from a Bronx Puerto Rican Cuban B-girl in Rome 🇵🇷🇨🇺🇮🇹🇺🇲

Its legal and socially acceptable and in "the hood" its clearly seen as a status flex to drink from a Hennessy bottle and some other "brands". These dudes often drink so much in a day that diabetes is likely... But again, if brothers could manage to break their addictions to weed and alcohol they would see clearer and act with more effectiveness. As long as the addiction is there life will center around gathering with fellow addicts and organizing the daily score. trips to the liquor store for drinks and wraps ... day in day out.

They’ve got clean running water, reliable electricity, food, access to healthcare and education, and a place to sleep at night, not to mention numerous social services like SNAP, WIC, child support, disability, SSI/ SSDI, etc.
And you’re right, Peter: it is clean and well maintained. You’ve seen what non and under-developed countries look like, and they are astronomically worse. The residents of the slums in Rio or Karachi would consider East New York paradise. They really don’t know how good they have it. Alas, everything is relative.

Compared to a lot of people in other countries these people live good lives. They don’t really have bad lives in that respect, if you take away the violence it’s pretty good, but with it it must be hard raising your kids and trying to prevent them from making the same mistakes. Every parent wants their kids to do better than them. It’s not wrong for them wanting to get out and move to a better area.

Being raised in the ghetto, now living high middle class. I never forget where I come from and I’m most grateful for everything and handle the bad like it’s nothing, because I remember the worse. I remember family getting shot and having to hide myself as a kid. Always threats on my family. Now I live with upmost humbleness and hold myself knowing where I’m from. Builds character that I’m still grateful for and I will not change it. Bridgeport, CT.

9:05 this right there is something I can't understand. He throws the plastic bottle right there like it's nothing to be bothered about. In front of the very building he spends half the episode claiming how important it is. Mind you every bad neighborhood in NYC is the same way. Damn litter everywhere, ripped garbage bags in front of houses, every single green space full of crap. Why? Why is this so. Someone explain to me please. I come from Europe so this is very bizarre for me. In my neighborhood, which was just like the projects here only smaller and uglier, grey brick buildings you'd get your head kicked in for something like he did...

@@robincranford8360 Facts. It's hitting everyone. Thing is, as the people who live in the communities its up to us to keep the people with the purse strings accountable. We have to be more active in our communities, in our schools, in the local governments. Everything is designed to take a little piece of your time. There has to be a discipline to put the phone down, put down reddit and youtube and facebook and all that ish and do what's real in life, drop that Social Media crap and face the people who are running the show while the rest of us are watching videos.
There's no harm in using videos like this to educate and keep things straight, but what I'm talking about is being constantly on the phone and looking at the screen like a screen addicted zombie.

It's not exclusively a black problem but they are the most affected. Single parenting in the black community is through the roof.
