  • In this video I finally get to check out a Line 6 Spider combo amp, I keep hearing that these amps are pretty bad yet I see a lot of people using them on youtube videos.
The model I review and demo is the Line 6 Spider III 30 Watt Solid state guitar combo amp with a 12" Celestion speaker.

It's a brilliant little amp. Class for metal tones, clean channel is good too the reverb is great.

i wasnt huge fan pf the spyder 2, the spyder 3 was okay, but the spyder 4 & 5 and the spyder valve are awesome and line 6 had other decent modeling amps that were unfairly thrown under the bus

I swear on my life that my spider 3 has something weird about it that sounds so bad ass, it has super clean tones and some very heavy and deep tones. Various guitarists have bought line 6 amps because they thought they would sound like mine does. I cannot recreate it on other spider amps, even the new models. The one on this video doesn't sound like mine either, I guess I got really really lucky.

same here, I own a spider jam since 2010 which is quite the same tec as spider iii and i really have the feeling that it sound so special, that i dont recognize in any other amp i've heard online or on site

4 years later, but i just wanted to say i agree! The newest spiders arent that great but 3 really did perfect what could be done with a digital signal, i have the 150W single and its probably better than some of my other amps. perfect for practice and i wouldn't mind gigging with it if necessary

I had one. I had enough with the issues, everytime you would change the channel to gain it would do a quick blip like it was all the way up on gain and volume and it was unusable for show applications. The treble shit quality was ear piercing. Only reason I had it was because it was affordable at the price and loud enough as a teen

I’ve used this amp for probably around fifteen years at this point, and never really understood why people think it’s so bad. I’m genuinely curious, I mean it’s not the best sounding amp, sure, it does everything I need it to, still works great after such a long time of use, and the tone is pretty easy to get sounding good with the eq. The only problem I’ve had is with switching between sounds, as the volume levels never seem to match. Where did it get it’s bad reputation from?

    • @theguitarmanifesto
      @theguitarmanifesto  5 років тому +33

It's because too many people are brainwashed by channels like Andertons who always bang on about how good the tone is on heavily overpriced and overated boutique hipster amps.
To be fair for what it is and the price range it's a perfectly good little practice amp

Picking one up soon for a practice amp for a few reasons. 1 it blends well with a home stereo (tubes tend to stand out and not mix as well). I jam this way often. 2 it matches any style of playing even if it's not dead on or "professional." 3 it's loud. A big plus given how affordable they are. 3. When people see it they make fun of you, then when you outplay them they get butthurt.

Firstly all such amps are not a solution to not being able to play - practice makes a huge difference to what you can get from an amp. I have always found that with thought and effort you can get any amp to produce at least two or three decent settings as long as the speaker is up to scratch - a 12" Celestion is ! . Most people get trapped into the effects before exploring the basic sounds - clean and overdrive. For the money you paid this is a bargain If it was cr*p it would not be a bargain at any price. Good purchase.

I urge you to try a 120 watt spider 3. Ebay has some deals. Without the pedal function mind you there's less you can do, but with its onboard drive boost and noise gate, it cuts and mixes well. I dunno, maybe I got a modded one. Can groove with cleans and burn with pantera. Expected to waste 80 bucks but I still play it to this day. Not so much since getting BIAS fx, but more than I thought.

I got the 75w version off Gumtree for £50 - the screen doesn't work so I can't navigate the different amp models, but the clean/twang/crunch etc and the delay/reverb etc all work fine.

Sounded good clean. The distortion, I wasn't the biggest fan of but for a practice amp it was ok. But the best thing is you got it for a bargain price. At £45 it's a great practise amp as long as your not using the high gain sounds, the clean on the edge of break up sounded good. I have a Blackstar HT Studio 20 and use it on the overdrive channel with the tiniest bit of drive that's almost not noticeable just to get that Nirvana sound.

Had the 15 Watt version as my first amp. Now all the nostalgia is coming up! I remember that I never played the "Clean" channel or the "Insane" Channel. From looking at it now I see that it's not that good as I thought it is as a 14 year old. What do you think about the Crunch channel with the Drive turned all the way down? That's what I played for a looong time. I Liked that. And a little trick for the amp: if you turn the Drive up while holding the Tuner Button, you change to the More Distorted Mode. Or if you do it the other way, the Distorted Mode turns off.
    Nice video by the way!

I have a spider v20 it came with a beginner package. Has there is little instruction in the manual or on the internet on how to use it, it as taken many months to work it out. First, turn all the knobs on the front panel to minimum set the master about 9 0clock to start with. Connect amp to your pc or whatever device you have. Open the spider remote app switch on the amp. I reinstalled from the app all amp models. Then individually adjusted from the app each of the amp settings. I find for me reduce the gain to at least 50% and the volume to at least 50% then do not touch any control knobs on the front panel other than master volume, reverb or drive. It now sounds good at all but absolutely maximum master volume.

Great video! I got this amp years ago and was impressed with it's versatility. In fact, I was so impressed that I picked up the Line6 Spider iv SpiderJam when it came out. It gets a lot of hate online, but I think it's mostly elitist snobbery. For the price you're getting an amp; looper; chorus, delay, flanger, reverb and a tuner. Oh, and a bunch (80+?) of pre-recorded drum beat and backing tracks. Oh, and you can vary the tempo/pitch of the beats and backing tracks. But wait, there's more. You also get hundreds of "tweak-able" preset tones based on dozens of styles and genres of music. And space to store 36 of your own personal preset tones. A great deal for somebody starting out, no? But equally serviceable for somebody jamming with buddies or playing clubs. For years I hauled a Boogie head and a couple Marshall 4x12 cabs all over hell's half-acre. And I remember doing soundcheck at my first serious gig in a big venue. The sound guy mikes up one of my Celestions. One. Brings up the fader on my guitar and pumps it through the house PA. Sounded huge! Filled the entire room! One speaker. As I got older, I eventually got tired of hauling around all those cabinets just because they "look" cool. And this Spider is still kicking ass after years of abuse. And when I post a vid of me playing, nobody ever comments on my tone... unless they can see my amp in the background. Do I think a good quality tube amp sounds better? Yes. But is the Spider Jam's (slight) compromise in tone, when you weigh in all the additional features (presets, fx, looper, etc), worth the price? Definitely. Without question. In an age when audio gear technology is evolving and advancing faster than ever, it's funny how the elitist hipster tone-snobs believe the best sound comes from old gear. Apply the same rational to another form of technology. If you had a buddy that loved movies and tv shows from the past and insisted that the only way to watch them was on one of those old, huge, box-like tv's with the curved screens, wouldn't you kind of laugh at them? Even if only to yourself, and maybe some other friends? Take it a step farther. Would you want to help them move that tv every weekend?

I never had the courage to buy and use a MIDI pedal to control the amp with my foot. I think it's possible to have a good sound for any genre with this amp but the controls feel painful and really not precise. I should have gone fore a more simple amp. I still use my LIne 6 Spider tho. It is good for practice actually, since there are a lot of effects and sound included. Great for practicing and exploring sound withtout having to plug lots of pedal.

You got a sweet deal on this amp for sure. I see a lot of these on sale in the U.S. for pretty cheap and I've been tempted but I have a Fender Champion 20 and it's a terrific amp. Cleans sounded ok and the reverb but the amp didn't wow me. Hey, loved that Hank Marvin song.

I don’t get why so many people hate on line6 . Yea it’s not a Marshall or fender tube but really it’s not a bad amp. I honestly only use the clean and gain channels. All other sounds come from my pedal board. But still it’s a decent amp. Just sounds like brand snobs who can’t play. Saw a video of a dude talking most shit on this amp and played it to “show you”. The only bad sound was him

For me the LINE 6 Spider 30 watts is a good modern amp and alternative to the most famous big brands... I find it ideal for beginners, but also for those who play in small clubs... It already has several combinable effects of its own, but even with good external pedals his Celestion works well... In short, like all the others, it should be rightly tested.

Another over criticized piece of gear in the guitar world, what a shocker! I owned the bass version of this for YEARS it was quite legit. Anyway, the cleans here are really quite nice. The tremelo, reverb, and chorus / flanger combined is quite awesome and unique. That sweep echo though? Absolutely terrible but it’s okay they tried.
Crunch tones are okay too, unbelievable how much flak this gets. Guarantee you a good guitarist could still get crowds going with it

I always see comments that bash an amp or musical instrument and think to myself "why?"..then I figured it out..I have been playing guitar for over 2 decades and the key aspect of guitar or anything in life that you want to learn is "Discipline"..if you have discipline then you would never put down another musician or their equipment..don't get it twisted either because there are plenty of amps and guitars that I don't like or would not own but I never take a second of my life to bash it..Modeling amps are not for everyone and especially not for people that have no patience or discipline...there is always going to be players that just want to get an amp, unbox it,plug in and start jamming..and that's fine but then there are people that take the time to learn and get the most out of an amp..i don't play thru a Line 6 modeling amp anymore but i have owned several models in the past..I also owned a Peavey vypyr VIP 2 and a couple of Fender Mustang V.2 modeling amps...I'm a metal guitarist and I made all those amps scream and created some awesome metal tones..in fact I have some guitar covers I made like Slayers "world painted blood " and "Angel of death"..also Killswitch Engaged "My Curse " using a Fender Mustang III V.2 amp and I did a cover of Killswitch Engaged "My last Serenade " using the Peavey vypyr VIP 2 and had a few comments asking me what amp I was using and what settings.
So with all that said my point is don't talk shit or put down something just because you don't fully understand it..clear your mind of all negative thoughts and use discipline to master anything in life..including an amp that you think sucks.
