I remember hearing that to make the R5C they took an R5 motherboard and a C70 mother board and squeezed it into an R5 body. The R5’s new firmware has pretty much eliminated the overheating issue making me think I should just sell the C.

Happy new owner of a Canon R5C here this summer 2023 - just saw your 6 tips for the DJI Ronin 3 pro which I'm currently waiting for and in your super fine YT you tell how you can't connect this camera... what the. .. we are now in August 2023, 10 months after your upload here... and several firmware updates later and so you would think they had fixed it, but booom still can't connect 🥲.
I bought the R5C especially for gimbal work. I found out it wasn't compatible with the Weebill 2 so I purchased a Ronin RS3 Pro. I was just setting it up trying to figure the bluetooth when I came across your video. Very frustrating
this kind of thing has been happeneing with all "smart" devices, not just the camera. cars that have software switch disabled features (cruise control for ex), even though the hardware exists in all car models (as it is cheaper to just produce the same HW config on all, and just use SW to enable/disable depending on how deep one's pockets are!).

The external battery would add even more weight to the gimbal with the extra batteries working separately. Sony is looking very good - works better with the DJI Transmission too.
PROBLEM SOLVED!!! Check the R5C manual page 12, picture "Name of The Parts". 25 Remote Control Terminal (front of camera). I use "Old Fashion" wireless remote control(Pixel) from my old Canon setup. Works fine with Photo and as well with Video. Only inconvenience was that I had to use little bit of knife to adjust cable connector to terminal when using Smallrig R5C Cage. I was pissed off for a moment before I read the manual. Basically any remote control with Canon remote terminal plug fits the bill. Off cause it's just start/stop, but extreme useful in solo work anyway. I hope Canon updates firmware for better solution.
@Super720com I know. As I wrote only stop/start works and BETTER solution is needed ... Remote Control Terminal is in another place than old DSLR cameras. First I thought that there is no possibility even traditional stop/start ... I use remote monitoring(iPad) and remote start/stop with R5C, I can't adjust shutter and ISO remotely and I won't spend 1600€ for hand grip. I found workaround solution for on camera audio. It is good camera but some workarounds are needed. With small external battery camera can be on from 4 to 5 hours. If you shoot with tripod and are behind the camera there aren't much issues. How do you build your rig matters more. Missing variable ND is only issue ... until you use old EF lenses with drop-in adapter.
This is NOT fixable in firmware. The reason that it doesn't work in video mode is that the camera uses too much power in video mode for the internal batteries, so that is why you need the Canon WFT-R10A, mostly to provide additional power.
I actually believe this could be addressed the same way the R5C requires you to use an external power source to access the full 8K 60 with AF. Seeing as how the OS and camera is already designed to have features that can only be accessed via more robust power solutions, I can't figure why this is not another one. I think many people would be completely willing to accept having to use a V-Mount to access this feature, that is already built into the body of the camera. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
This makes no sense. Maybe if we needed to have the fan on. But turning off should be an option too. The r5 is the same camera and does not have this issue
@@RockyMaiviaMiami It is not the same camera. The R5c uses the Cinema camera operating system which is not as efficient as the stills OS, look at how the AF struggles compared to the R5. The R5c draws a lot more power than the R5 in video mode. The R5c cannot power the lens when in 8K60. I think that it probably is able to power the WiFi/bluetooth with additional USB-PD power bank, so if they do enable firmware fix, it probably needs USB-PD power.
this battery issue is also a completely Software fixable issue. The reason it is so power hungry, is because it never stops oversampling, EVEN WHEN NOT RECORDING!!!. YES that means when ever you switch to video mode, it just starts oversampling for you to watch in the viewfinder or screen. I KID YOU NOT. If they only did the same as on the photo side of things, you would extend the battery life in orders of magnitude. If you want to test this out, try to hit the media button when ever you're not recording, and see for yourself. So by software updating alone, you could improve this camera not only for battery life, but also this insane wifi issue. But as it is you're correct in your assessment.
Wow! Really disappointed that this video is a year old and no update that fixes this. Just picked up the new DJI RS4 Pro and was feeling crazy because I couldn't find how to connect Bluetooth in video mode and here is the reason why. Thanks for the information even if it is bad news :/
I found another problem. If you trying to use R5C for a photography and using external monitor, you cannot use your camera and external monitor together. It's either one or another. I can't even find an option for HDMI anywhere 😂
I’m on set right now, fully expected the wifi to provide the functionality I have experienced on my previous Canons, WTF CANON!!! How many moths has this camera been out!!!
Thank you so much for raising this issue. I use the camera to film myself, and without remote monitoring/control, that is really difficult. Because of this, I’ll have to use Sony A7siii instead.
What a huge oversight! In a just world, Canon would immediately fix this and apologize. More likely in the real world: they'll promote the team that thought of doing it this way.
R5C owner here and this is killing me to find out. I don't own an DJI gimbal yet but I do see a gimbal in my future. This is KILLING ME, please Canon fix this issue. I also already purchased the R5 battery grip with no idea that a $1000 specific R5C WiFi grip was on the way. UGH!!! please fix this.
I’m heavily invested in Canon (C70/R5C) and a lot of RF optic, I love Canon and don’t like Sony! But I am thinking of switching to Sony, that I don’t like!
As someone who uses both systems (Canon and Sony) a lot, I would say that both of them have incredible strengths and some very annoying weaknesses. I really like Sony, but there are some things in them that drive me absolutely crazy too, which is why I prefer Canon at the end of the day. I'd also point out that Canon has been really good at addressing and fixing a lot of the gripes in their cameras with firmware updates the last two years. The Canon R5 is a completely different camera than when I first bought it and most of my gripes have been fixed. I would say if you are invested in Canon, you will probably be happier staying in the system. Good luck and have a great day!
A year later and Canon still have not done anytging to fix this. I would also like to see support for the XC protocol on the R5C all the C70, C300, C500, XF605 and the PTZ units have support bit not the R5C it drives me nuts.
U might be right. One of the reasons why the battery depletes faster in video mode is coz they need to power the cooling fan. Many don't realize a lot of power isn't needed for that. It's not just a spinning plastic, there's actual active cooling that's being done and is perhaps why the Wi-Fi thing was disabled
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻 Fully agree with you, it’s a ridiculous situation. My other problem with R5C is that video mode tells me that CFExpress card is full, while there is still more than 40% capacity available…
@@DeafDirector I have two SanDisk CFExpress Cards (256, 512 GB) and both behave the same... Based on Canon support I low-level reformatted them, but still the same. I updated the firmware, but still the same issue. Cards are working well (e.g. on computer you can really copy there 500 GBs of data) Here is a picture of the situation. Can't record to the card, while there is still 100GB remaining... drive.google.com/file/d/15ZwG5Iw-o9CPVQgCkP6ikQtAzxLJAwK2/view?usp=sharing
@@JaroslavBengl That is a crazy, weird issue. Only thing I could suggest is to reset the camera to factory default and see if that fixes it, but I have no idea. Good luck!
Do you guys even know how we can complain to canon? Their website is trash and labirintic. If we had one e-mail. We could bombard canon with requests for change
I test drive this camera when it first came out…. I refused to buy it until they release a firmware update. That cinema OS is a copy and paste OS and wasn’t customized for the camera itself. Here’s hoping because it’s an amazing camera.
I've been slowly phasing out my Sony system for a Canon system for commercial work. Now having both the R5 and R5C, the R5C definitely seems like a one trick pony. That is, the 8K60. Don't get me wrong, the exposure tools are nice too, but 8K60 with no record limit is the only practical thing R5C brings over R5, and as others have pointed out it's worse in every other way. What a strange camera.
Even with the new 1.6 firmware, you can't record 4k30 internally for more than 30 minutes on the r5. For the kind of work I do (mostly shooting live classical music concerts) having a redudant backup to an external recorder is a must. (especially given the fragile micro HDMI port).
Just bought the Ronin RS3 for my R5C and after watching this video I'm shocked and disappointed in Canon. That said... I should still be able to connect to do timelapse without connecting a cable like on my old Ronin-S.
That’s scary for me as this is on my dream equipment list, but not being able to connect to a gimbal is a big no-go for me. I hope @Rp Einstein is right about creating a new F setting? Have you followed up on this, @Deaf Director?
I checked up on Rp Einstein's suggestion, but based on everything I tried, it appears to be a dead end. Page 159 in the manual starts the whole Network Functions sections with notice that "to be able to use the following function networks, you will need to connect that WFT-R1- Wireless File Transmitter (sold separately) to the camera.
@@JaroslavBengl But in that case you'll not be able to shoot in 8K/60fps/RAW right? I don't think the RS gimbal would provide power delivery via the USB-C
I would argue that it is worse than you say. Try and do the FTP transfer or any non-trivial Wi-Fi connectivity with the R5 without the $1000 extra network grip - you know… the grip that has two batteries but the camera only uses one of them. Relating to the R5C and the R5 connecting to the DJI RS 3 Pro: the USB-C cable matters. I have a few posts around but the essence is that the cables that come with the Ronin work. Indeed, older cables without the eMarker chip work. But many of the cables that you own by this point probably have an eMarker chip in them and as a result, they will not work with the R5 or R5C to DJI RS 3 Pro. I don’t know if this is a Canon problem or a DJI problem. So… if you find that your start / stop button isn’t working, try a different cable. I would almost not mind buying the $1000 extra grip IF it would use both batteries for the camera but all of the reviews say that it does not. One is for the camera and the other is for the Wi-Fi / ethernet.
I switched from Sony to Canon for the R5c. Now, with the new app announced for the FX3, etc., which is part of the issue you’re complaining about here, I’m feeling like I made a big mistake. Maybe it’s time to switch back. 😔
So you switched from sony to canon (spending $4k) bcoz of a feature that you didnt even bother to check in the specs of the canon camera?? Either you spend huge money like toilet paper or you dont even own the canon do you, sony fanboy liar?? I switched from the A7sIII to the R5c coz the A7sIII was literally all overhype and zero quality including its low light BS [it was all just DNR video)
@@plisskenetic Oh no! You caught me! I confess. I’ve never owned any Canon cameras. Sony pays me tremendous amounts of money to make these comments here on UA-cam. LOL!!! Paranoid much? i wish canon would fix this with a firmware update but than there would be no reason for this stupid 1k battery grip .. so i guess it will never happen
Still no fireware update for this? This is lame as f* Saw this Portkeys LH7P 7 monitor withe my R5C would be perfect for my workflow... I assume the focus touch, iso, aparture wont work without the wifi/bleutooth...grrrr
Hi, thank you for your insightful video. I wanted to buy the R5C and thought that a system of remote viewing and focus adjustment would be available in Video mode, until I discovered that the camera uses a completely different systems for photo and Video. It also seems that the R5C will just not pair with the Camera Connect app! Hmm...Canon's Camera Connect official compatibility list does not include the R5C, even though the picture of the R5C is shown within the app itself. Some users have reported that the R5C may connect to the app when paired with an external Wi-Fi grip, others say that this pairing will be limited to the Photo mode and will not provide any remote control in the Video mode. I do not have access to the Wi-Fi grip so have no way of testing these claims. The question is: Is there currently any way to remotely view, set the focus and start/stop recording Video on the R5C? Regards, Alan
I’m super frustrated. This is all just a really bad port. No video on photo mode, scroll wheel doesn’t work, battery life, wifi, & a downgrade In autofocus. 🤦🏾♂️. If I could swap for my r5 I would
This is pure speculation, but I think canon are going to drop a new cine camera, as their current line up is pretty outdated now and they are going to overhaul the video UI. I think the R5C is just a victim of bad timing with its release. I think the quirks on the R5C are just to bad for it's release (and I love the camera or at least what it can do) and I know Canon always finds a way to do something stupid but even for them I think the quirks on this camera couldn't be something they can really be happy with.
This is Canon again stopping customers using features they have to make more money making them buy more expensive equipment. I bet it will feature in the R5C II.
I was reading the reviews for this grip on B&H and - get this - it apparently splits the battery power so that one battery is only allowed to power the camera and the other can only power the WFT feature?!! So if I'm understanding this right - you'll still have to rig it with an external battery. I mean none of these WFT transfer functions are vital to me but it is very f*cking infuriating none the less.
The grip has a terrible reputation for this reason, and makes the whole situation that more maddening. I thought about going into this in the video, but I was trying to keep things concise. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
Thanks so much for the tip! I will be diving into this to see its application. I really appreciate you providing a possible alternative. Have a great day!
Hey Rp Einstein, thanks so much for the tip, but I think I hit a dead end with it. I was unable to access any of those functions, and when I dived back into the manual on Page 159 which begins the whole Network Functions sections, the very first sentence is a notice that "to be able to use the following function networks, you will need to connect that WFT-R1- Wireless File Transmitter (sold separately) to the camera. I appreciate you reaching out. Have a great day!
Im not sure, honestly. In theory it should, but I'm not willing to invest $1000 to test this out, when I have an R5 that can do this for free. I have also investigated the grip, and it has some issues with it that does not make me want to deal with it. Have a great day
@@DeafDirector Thanks for your answer. I am struggeling with the same :D So let us hope that canon will make it work. Than this Camera would be killer. So by software updating alone, you could improve this camera not only for battery life, but also this insane wifi issue. But as it is you're correct in your assessment.
side note. The Media viewing does note oversample, hence the much extended battery life
Also would be good for using with the portkeys monitors too like the B5M IIIwr for example
I like they show the communication / remote feature in the add for the r5c
Just ran into this issue today 🤦🏾♂️
I agree!!! I have the same exact setup! and I can not connect it
Thank you so much for raising this issue. I use the camera to film myself, and without remote monitoring/control, that is really difficult. Because of this, I’ll have to use Sony A7siii instead.
The A7sIII has crap video, I owned it before buying the R5C coz the R5c is all about video quality itself. You're not the target audience are you?
What a huge oversight! In a just world, Canon would immediately fix this and apologize. More likely in the real world: they'll promote the team that thought of doing it this way.
I just bought the R5C wish I had known this! aw man. Please Canon make this fix!
@@DeafDirector I know, had Sony and Canon before my self..
I’m here from the future (2024). There are flying cars and all, but Canon still hasn’t implemented this despite several firmware updates.
It is real frustration. Have R5C and only today understand I can't control it in video mode from smartphone!
A year later and Canon still have not done anytging to fix this. I would also like to see support for the XC protocol on the R5C all the C70, C300, C500, XF605 and the PTZ units have support bit not the R5C it drives me nuts.
I think its a power issue, and thats why they disabled it
U might be right. One of the reasons why the battery depletes faster in video mode is coz they need to power the cooling fan. Many don't realize a lot of power isn't needed for that. It's not just a spinning plastic, there's actual active cooling that's being done and is perhaps why the Wi-Fi thing was disabled
@@plisskenetic I still think it can be solved with firmware, that it is disabled until you connect to external power like the 8k60
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻 Fully agree with you, it’s a ridiculous situation. My other problem with R5C is that video mode tells me that CFExpress card is full, while there is still more than 40% capacity available…
No that depends on what card or system frequency you've set bruh. That ain't canon
@@plisskenetic wow, really? Do you have any more info on it, please?
Hmmm, that is unusual. I have 4 CFExpress cards and have not encountered that issue. Are you experiencing this on multiple CFExpress cards?
@@DeafDirector I have two SanDisk CFExpress Cards (256, 512 GB) and both behave the same... Based on Canon support I low-level reformatted them, but still the same. I updated the firmware, but still the same issue. Cards are working well (e.g. on computer you can really copy there 500 GBs of data)
Here is a picture of the situation. Can't record to the card, while there is still 100GB remaining...

@@JaroslavBengl That is a crazy, weird issue. Only thing I could suggest is to reset the camera to factory default and see if that fixes it, but I have no idea. Good luck!
I agree!!! This is very frustrating!!
Do you guys even know how we can complain to canon? Their website is trash and labirintic. If we had one e-mail. We could bombard canon with requests for change
STILL nothing for the R5C. I just bought the DJI R3 Pro and have to film in 2 days. So pissed off.
Man this is crazy they need to fix this... I have the rs3 pro and raveneye. the r5c and I cant even get my raveneye to work with this..
hey.. always love your videos...
When will Canon Fix these Problems to have Great Connection. Using Full the Connections the Camera has available...
I can’t believe this is happening to me right now, especially after watching a video. Fortunately, I have the GRIP and the DJI RS3 Pro to try it out.
You can connect with USB-C cable in video mode and recording button and focus control works well. Just not wireless…
@@morgonaut I do not know as I never tried that… I personally don’t shoot in 8k raw as files are too enormous for my YT work.
@@JaroslavBengl yes "are enourmous" but the quality gain is insane 😇
DAMN IT! Canon still has not fixed it.!
Completely agree with you.
I cannot use my canon Bluetooth remote even in photo mode; something that I use to be able to do on the R5 in both photo and video mode 🤦🏻♂️
so you can transfer photos can you lock a photo on R5C and it will send or do you still need the transmitter grip?
This is a problem for me as well. I got the DJI RS3 gimbal and was totally frustrated when I tried to set it up with my Canon R5 C. Fix this please.
I have a z9 for now but maybe I will go again with Canon the Nikon Z9 is too heavy but for video is fantastic.Try it
Comforting to know it may be possible. Let’s do a Phillip bloom and start a petition
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU! I went back to my R5 instead of using my New R5C.
You don't even own it, do you??!
For real though 😢 this is so sad I was very disappointed about this
I switched from Sony to Canon for the R5c.
I switched for a whole host of reasons. And you’re forgetting that this app is new to Sony. So there was no checking to be done when I bought the R5c. Those features didn’t exist with either brand.
Your hostility and accusations suggest you’re way too invested in your camera choices. Live and let live, my friend. You’ll live longer.
This has not been fixed yet Dec 23 2023.
So I will be unable to connect to my iPhone 13 with cellular data 5G thanks
can you help me please? i bought the djiR3s pro, my camera is canon R5C, i connected the usb-c cable in video mode, but the record button doesn't work. I have seen several in which they show other cameras and in the menu of their cameras they use the Pc remote, but I cannot find that function in my camera. how can i make my DJI work with my camera? I'm desperate, I've been trying for days.
Sent link to your video to someone in the Canon Cinema shop
Was this ever solved?
i wish canon would fix this with a firmware update but than there would be no reason for this stupid 1k battery grip .. so i guess it will never happen
Still no fireware update for this? This is lame as f*
Saw this Portkeys LH7P 7 monitor withe my R5C would be perfect for my workflow... I assume the focus touch, iso, aparture wont work without the wifi/bleutooth...grrrr
Hi,
thank you for your insightful video.
@DanS dude, read the comment, it literally starts with "this is pure speculation".
@DanS right it's clear you don't know what speculation means.
This is Canon again stopping customers using features they have to make more money making them buy more expensive equipment. I bet it will feature in the R5C II.
Top!
Dear Canon, this better be an oversight. Fix it, and then prompt the fix.
Am sharing the shit out of this!
What a shame this is not possible!
You don't need the ridiculous battery grip somebody told me to go to page 184 and create a new F setting.I BTW like all your videos
Se eu soubesse teria comprado uma Sony! Uma merda isso que a canon fez com a gente!!
Has this been fixed ?
Unfortunately, no
Canon I hope you are this
Will the DJI RS3 work with this battery grip and connect wireless?
Im not sure, honestly. In theory it should, but I'm not willing to invest $1000 to test this out, when I have an R5 that can do this for free. I have also investigated the grip, and it has some issues with it that does not make me want to deal with it. Have a great day
@@DeafDirector Thanks for your answer. I am struggeling with the same :D
So let us hope that canon will make it work. Than this Camera would be killer.
Another setup would be to use a dummy battery with vmount battery and connect the ronin via cable to the camera. But it is only a workaround that is not how it should be in my opinion.
