Brilliant video Johannes! Very exhaustive in all the options. Another follower from Australia!
One of the best videos I've seen on this, and I've been looking for a WHILE 😅 THANK YOU SO MUCH‼🙏🏽🙏🏽
Hi, Thank you so much for sharing these riging knowledges !
Still the best summary of this R5C power solution out there. Well done!
Great video! So inspiring and valuable content... Got my battery kit for my R5C all set now! Keep up with your videos.....
Really well done, thank you for this in depth and concise educational video
Great video, definitely given me some food for thought. Currently researching rigs to use with my R5C that suits a tripod and gimbal setups.
Thank you, Johnny. Every clip about optimizing the use of the R5c is welcome. Ex. types of CF Express you tested and recommend
Great video! Very helpful, thank you so much!
Best R5C power solution video
Most craziest video i ever watched. Amazing person ❤❤❤
Great video! Thanks for putting it together.
Excellent, detailed video!
Thank you man you saved my life and mon ami's life
Fortunately enough, I have a Ninja V+ to check the remaining voltage of a V-lock battery, saves me from worrying too much. Very informative by the way, love the video!
Thankyou for such a detailed video. You got a follower!!
Thank you very much!
This is fantastic. Thank you.
This is one of the most detailed gear videos I've ever seen - so much useful info packed into 11 minutes!
Thanks!
Great video!!
This is super content, Johannes! Thanks for making it 👍🏻
I've got R5C recently and battery upgrade is on my next steps list...
out of curiosity, what run time are you getting from 1 LE-E6NH battery? I am about to buy this camera. Either lots of LP-E6NH batteries, or the battery grip, or the V Mount.
@@agentleman7469 Commonly 30-40 minutes of filming. You can extend it a lot with the trick of pressing Media preview button which puts the sensor on sleep. I do commonly use it just with traditional batteries (and have 4 spare ones in the bag).
@@JaroslavBengl thank you so much for taking the time to reply, much appreciated. That seems okay for me. I might just get the battery grip and some extra batteries. Cheers
Thanks for the info! I can also recommend the Andycine NP-F970 battery plate for the R5C. It comes with USB-C/ PD-out. The battery lasts really long. Is even more compact and lighter compared to the V-Mount. You just have to think about how to attach the plate. I now have almost all the solutions
Great video my good man. Thank you.
gracias por la info!! uso la Anker y con ese soporte que mostraste me solucionaste los problemas-)
Thank you for your tips. I found a nearly perfect solution for my gimbal: Moza Air 2 & Anker 537
Brilliant! Thanks
Great video
Well done.
Great info, thanks. My Anton Bauer reads 304 minutes of record time. I have a Anker power bank as well. No big deal to put the battery in my pocket and run a long USBC. I never shoot 8k though.
Thank you!!!
great!! thank you
Great video. I’m a little confused with myself. I have obviously seen the video before today because I have liked it. But I don’t recall watching it and I’ve been struggling with these problems for the past month or so.
Before I forget, please be careful when buying a power bank. The power bank needs to be able to deliver around 20 W from a single port. Some have multiple ports and can deliver more then 20 from the aggregate but not from a single port.
Thanks bro
Very nice video.
I took a slightly different approach and focused on the cost per watt-hour. The Canon batteries, even the knock offs, are $3/watt-hour. As I recall, the V-mount batteries that I priced were $1/watt-hour. And some of the cheaper power bank type batteries were as low as $0.30/watt-hour.
With the power bank solutions, care must be taken to make sure that a single port can supply enough power. Many advertise the total power but they have multiple ports. So, check to see how much power a single port can supply. As I recall, the R5C needs 20 watts. (Someone check me on that.)
U need a power source that has the 9V/3A protocol (27W). The camera does not need as much but that is the protocol needed to make it draw power via USB in PD mode. it will not do it if that protocol is missing from the power source.
I am thinking about attaching a power bank holder to the right side of the cage, put the power bank, and THEN balance it on a gimbal. Yes, you still lose the gimbal controls, but if you can go for 4-5-6 hours of shooting with an Anker power bank, I think this might be a good option, while not putting that much extra weight on the gimbal
Canon has had the DR-E6C dummy especially for the R5C since before the launch. That combined with the Anton Bauer to Canon 9V P-tap cable is a solution that has been around from day one. Also, Niceyrig make a V-mount plate that combined with the Smallrig counterweight can be mounted a lot more safely to the RS2 to accomodate a v-mount pack.
Do you have a photo of the NiceyRig + SmallRig solution?
@@johannesdoerr I have a video on it ;)
@@EmeraldAudiovisual Ah, I understand! I thought about getting the counterweight kit for mounting something else under the gimbal some time ago. Definitely a good solution to mount the battery. Will probably work with the little SmallRig V-lock mount that I'm using, too!
@@johannesdoerr i just don't want to promote my stuff i somebody else timeline. But its a real good option.
Great video! Can you please clarify what hardware you used to mount the microphone? Couldnt see that in the list. Thank you!
I’m glad you’re asking! I mounted it using a smallrig monitor mount (2905) that I disassembled to get the wing nut out. Then, I screwed a cold shoe (1241) on it, which then takes the microphone.
Just got this camera and your video has been very helpful! Do you know if a 12V output from SmallRig NP-F Battery Adapter Plate could power the 8K60p? It'd be such a nimble setup.
There is a NPF plate that has a d-tap output, which could work with a d-tap dummy battery (but at the moment, the Alvin's Cables dummy battery does not support raw 60 fps, they are still trying to figure it out) amzn.to/3pi2v2W
Hey man, would that rig (the one with the battery at the back) fit on the gimbal ?
Great info! I bought my R5C some weeks ago and I have have this issue wich i saw in your video as well. When you change the RecFormat to Raw I can shoot only 8K. Do you know how to fix it?
That’s by design. Raw means „not processed“ and scaling it down to something else than the native 8K would be processing. Would love to have that feature too, though. I also miss a way to record 8K in XF-AVC…
Thinking of using the Swit omni 99 8.4v o/p to power the Cannon 5D4 when travelling to remote areas and photographing wildlife. Is this option safe, meaning the 8.4v.
I have canon r6 and thinking about the kon Blue d Tap with a mounting plate.. where do I plug the d tap into? Straight to battery or 7.4 volt? Thx
Hallo Johannes. Tolles Video. Ich nutze eine Powerbank mit 20.000mAh. Die V-Mounts haben doch oft weniger und sind teurer oder? Was wäre die bessere/ beste Option, um möglichst lange zu filmen?
LG Andre
very usefull video. I did not see the reference for the 90 degrees bracket from Smalrlig to support the Zitay splitter. can you add the link please
They still don’t have this as an official product. You would have to ask them directly if they can make one for you.
how is the Anton Bauer battery do you know exact model for r5c
Do you know if the Alvin cable dummy battery to dtap R5C cable will work to power it for 8K60? fantastic overview! I’ve searched online everywhere but can’t find accurate info about external power for the R5C! thank you for the great work! Subbed for life!
They have some issues with the cable right now regarding 60fps RAW, but they seem optimistic to fix it.
@@johannesdoerr oh no! I just ordered one! :(
Contact them, they might send you a second one once they figured out RAW 60fps
@@johannesdoerr hmm good call! thanks again!
On amazon’s page for the alvin dummy listed: “For Canon R5C. It does not support 8K auto focus”. So it’s not the perfect solution
Nice video, any idea what the standard battery life is like when only using it for photos ? would it last the same as the r5 ?
I haven’t tested that (and I don’t have the R5), but I would be surprised if there was a difference. It’ll the lack of IBIS probably improves battery life even.
Battery life is good when using in photo mode.
At 8:54 you mention an angled piece from Small Rig. Do you know the name of the part or can you share a picture of the part? I can't find anything like it on Small Rig and don;t see it listed in your post.
Thanks this is a great video, super helpful!
That was a work-in-progress piece that they sent me for testing along with some variants. The never released that exact thing, but another variant: smallrig.com/r/XV1HI1 I'm not sure if that would work for this application, though.
Hey, I want to install the big battery under the camera on the gimbal. Unfortunately, this idea was only briefly seen in your video. could you tell me what i need for this? I have an R5C and an RS3 pro. i want to install a battery under the gimbal. is it still possible to stabilize it properly?
Does the moman battery you use support usb pd charging or would I need to get the dtap cable you need mentioned. Thanks!
You need a dummy battery. The Moman only has d-tap and usb-a output.
What Apple MacBook Power Adapter are you referring to in order to charge the Moman 99 battery? I would like to charge the Moman as fast as safely possible without burning up the battery. But different MacBooks offer different Power adapters. I have an M1 Mac. Will that adapter work?
I don't change the Moman battery with the Mac power adapter, this is only possible with their new "pro" version of that battery. I the video, I was talking about charging the R5C with its internal battery.
Great video. How did you attach the 15mm rods to the dual 15mm battery hinge?
It has screw holes in the rods, so that you can attach more rods
@@johannesdoerr Thank you.
what macbook charger ( watt) do you use. I have the 140w fast charger. Will this work with the R5c?
I'd like to know this too, I don't want to fry my camera!!!
is this mac power adaptor good for the canon r5c +Apple Macbook magsafe laddare, 87 W Usb-C - til Macbook Pro 15"
I would say yes. Mine has 87W as well.
hi..work ok r5c with Alvin's Cables Lanparte LP E6 Dummy Battery to D Tap Cable ? you have problem with this or is ok,thanks !
Probably not. I had dummy batteries for the R5 that did not work with the R5C. Alvin's Cables has a dummy battery for the R5C which works, but not in 8K 60fps. Check the video description for the link.
@@johannesdoerr ok i order cable for R5C i hope to work with my batery d-tape Smallrig V50
Hello Johannes.
I tried to emulate part of what you did for my Canon R5C, however I must have made a mistake somewhere.
I purchased a FX Lion Nano 1 and a Focus Foto dummy plug, and it does not power the R5C
If I use the Vmount battery via usb-c, it powers the camera no problem.
I am thinking I will try another dummy plug
Do you have any other suggestions
Thanks
The dummy battery must be made explicitly for the R5C, because it requires a higher voltage. Other one will not work (in video mode)
Mich würde das ganze mal interessieren für den zhiyun crane 3s ich bekomm die r5c nicht gesteuert über den gimbal.
Just a suggestion: What about Sony NPF to LPE6. I used it a lot on my BMPCC 4k and without too much of extra weight, I got a decent amount of runtime( NPF 970) - roughly about 90mins+. The one I had had a led light indicator which would turn yellow from green once the battery starts going down. And also less issues with NPF batteries when boarding planes.
Yes, that is definitely an option that I should have covered in the video! I have actually been using NPF batteries with my EOS RP before I switched to d-tap. Reason: the higher voltage can also power the Ronin RS-2. But if that’s not relevant, then sure! But for 8K RAW 60fps, you would need a dummy battery with voltage converter to 9 volts - does that exist yet?
@@johannesdoerr Most of the NPF adapters have a 12v output. You can make your own dummy battery, just add a resistor to bring the voltage down to 9v
Andycine make a NPF adapter, that has D-tap and USB-C. The USB-C connector unfortunately only is 9V 2A, so not sufficient for the R5C, but one can power the R5C with the D-tap connector.
Hi Johnny,
That’s for sharing power bank and V-mount battery options.
You may have missed Core SWX latest offering called the Power Edge Base Link that has a 70Wh battery + a better 1/4” base with a tripod and V-mount at the bottom + add link multiple PB Link V-mount batteries (I only have one but don’t have multiple to see how it hot swap or continues to power when you replace the depleted one). It also has a PD and USBA ports and can show the recording times.
Alternatively, you can try using the Smallrig 3085 Power bank adapter mounted on a cage or hotshoe:
SmallRig Power Bank Adapter for Mirrorless and Cine Cameras, Convert Type-C 5V-12V Input to DC7.4V/2A Output, for BMPCC 4K & 6K, for Sony A7S3, for Canon EOS R5 R6, for Fujifilm X-T4 - 3085 a.co/d/hvYlQhU
The lightest and smallest power bank, 20,000mAh, is from Nitecore. It is made out carbon fiber (hence light and durable) and has 45W PD. If you strap it to the Smallrig 3085 power bank adapter, you can power the 5RC and hot swap for another fresh power bank with the LP-E6NH inside the camera. Or attach a second power bank and continuously charge the 20,000mAh using the Input2 USBC port
frist, thanks for the video
in the description you say we should get a better dummy battery but which one?
you havn't linked a proper dummy battery for the full 8k60.
I just need a dummy battery + power brick (EU/Germany) to record with the R5C in the studio without any limitations
Alvin's Cables has a dummy battery specifically for the R5C, but it still does not support 8K 60fps. As far as I know, there is no dummy battery that can do this.
Really useful, thank you, and saved me from buying the wrong LP-E6 batteries 😊 Curious to know if you risk burning out the HDMI port with having both camera and monitor powered from the same battery. It's a real risk with cinema rigs, with many folk suffering from it at some stage. I'm no expert in the electronics side of this, but maybe having an internal battery mounted in the camera stops this from being a potential problem? It's always at the back of my mind, and as a result I tend to keep my cinema cam (which doesn't have an internal battery) and monitor powered separately.
It's good to be aware of this! I talk about this in my video about the RP, but it's also valid for the R5C: ua-cam.com/video/sa34kypwjvE/v-deo.html
@@johannesdoerr spot on Johannes, thanks for the link. Yeah, I've got in the habit of always following this sequence even when I am powering separately, so that it becomes automatic.
@@johannesdoerr If I’m powering the r5c via usb-c and a monitor from the same v-Mount battery, will hot swapping the battery fry the hdmi port? (Since it wouldn’t be following that shutdown sequence)?
@@joegrieco7343 First: canon cameras seem to have a protection against this, at least I‘ve never heard of anyone damaging their camera like that. For blackmagic on the other hand, there are such reports. Regarding usb-c: I think the construction of the connector more or less ensures that the ground pins make a connection first when plugging in, and this should prevent a ground loop. However, no guarantee.
@@johannesdoerr Good to know. Thanks for the quick response!
Hi Johannes, would a powerbank at 48000 mAh / 153 Wh do damage to the Camera? Where I am it's not possible to source the Anker which would be ideal.
I don’t think that any usb-c power bank would damage the camera. The only question is how long the power bank is able to provide power
👍🏾🙏🏾
So does the "E6 Dummy Battery to D-Tap Coiled Cable for Canon-R5C Alvin's Cables" you have in the video support 8k 60fps? And why does it say to contact them first?
I think they had some issues making the cables in the beginning. I had some problems with 8K 60fps and needed a replacement cable. So maybe they produced some ones that don’t support 8K 60fps that they still want to sell to people who don’t need that feature. I’m really just guessing here. Contact with the support is really great, just write to them before purchasing.
@@johannesdoerr I hope they can make one for 8k 70 because $160 for the Canon one is a joke!
Hello which MacBook adaptor I can use to power the canon r5c can you send me a link?
One that has 87W
You plug the dummy battery into the moman 99, is that correct?
Yes
Thanks, good video. Honestly, this is a NO for me for buying an almost $5000 camera that cannot power itself ….🙁 …. Big flaw in my opinion ….
It’s possible to charge Canon R6 via a USB C port with Fxlion?
RP and R5C can be charged via usb-c, so I assume it also works with the R6
heyy i was planning on getting the canon r5c with RF15-35 2.8 but is R5C fully compatible with dji rs2 . i have been a photographer a long time now but i want to invest in video and photo want to do more of interior photo and video and vertical reels for general video assignment or will you suggest canon R5 for dii rs2 i know that my videos will not be very long. will a normal L plate work for r5c and rs2 gimbal i currently have canon 5dmarkiii nd 60D . going to buy in 2 days do suggest thanks i am not sure if i need a canon i can completely shift to a new brand :D it is just that i have already invested so many lenses in canon. i was getting sony a7rv i similar price but in that i can only start to buy 1 sony lens
The only thing that does NOT work with RS2 and R5C is controlling things like ISO or focus through the gimbal. Only start/stop recording works. For me not a big deal. Balancing the camera with that lens should be no problem. You really have to device if you want to dive into the cinema OS world with the R5C, or if you'd rather stay in the photo world with video mode. You can watch my R5C film rig video to see a comparison with my previous RP (obviously, that's not an R5, but many differences to the R5C also apply to the R5). I hope that helps!

about how many hours can you get shooting 4k from the Moman 99 vmount battery?
I will make a test run to give you an exact number. It is several hours for sure, with external monitor.
ua-cam.com/users/shortsWTEdU_hRMoc
I received my dummy battery from Alvin's Cables and it's no different then the others. They sent me a message saying that they were working on one that would provide sufficient power to support the R5C
How do you mean no different to the the others?
The Amazon page now states that it does NOT support 8K 60 fps. To me, this tells me that Alvin is a legitimate company.
Please update us if / when Alvin replies with a solution that works.
Hey, is it possible to use the camera as a webcam, while getting energy to keep it full over, the same usb-c cable?
The EOS Webcam Utility App is not compatible with the R5C as far as I know. I just tried it and it doesn’t work, and the website does not list it either. :-(
@@johannesdoerr Maybe you can try the live view from the eos utility, if that is available. Basically just testing data flow while also powering the camera through the same cable.
@@2darki just tested: live view works in photo mode, but video mode is not compatible with the eos utility (it shows a message that camera must be in photo mode). And it does not look like the camera is charging when it’s connected to the computer and on. When it’s off, then yes.

No autofocus?
Alvin's update their page and says not suppor 8k anymore, why...
It stills says that you can contact them if you need 8K 60fps, doesn’t it?
I haven’t done it. But you guys could get a Fanny pack and throw your vmount in that with the cable coming out. 😅
Why didnt you list the Wh of the powerbank?
I think they don’t provide an official value.
@@johannesdoerr You can calcute from the milliamphours and the voltage. Because the powerbank has a flexible voltage output in comparison with v-mount which has a fixed voltage. You need to calculate yourself. If the official battery is 7,2V, and thats the camera draw thats roughly 180Wh, almost double from the other alternatives
Great video. But the E6 Dummy Battery to D-Tap Coiled Cable for Canon-R5C Alvin's Cables, It states .................. For Canon R5C. It does not support 8K auto focus. Why do you say Alvin cables is 9v and so does 8k60. I messaged them and they said their dummy battery does not and will not work for 8k60. Why do you keep saying they do in different videos ?
This is why I put a "caution" note in the video description. At the time when I recorded this video, they claimed that the battery would support 60fps Raw, and sent me two prototypes for testing. It didn't work as expected for me in that mode; the camera shuts off power to the lens, so that is only an option for manual lenses. However, since I mostly record in log, the dummy battery works great for me.
I'm in between getting a female battery or a power bank... Still have not decided yet
You dont need a 87w charger, the camera draws 13w max
for usb-c you need a powersource that supports the 9V/3A PD profile.
