YES! This is EXACTLY what I was hoping for. I was becoming pretty concerned that I’d have to return the camera, because no object tracking is a dealbreaker for me, especially since this camera doesn’t have IBIS.
OMG. Hallelujah. Just bought my R5C today - I'm coming from R6 - and was just WTF. Thank God I found you answering exactly what I needed to know. I am subscribing! Thank you!
You should consider making a full detail video of the cinema menu I’ve seen many videos that have only one section but not the entire menu in detail and what it does so please considering
I am preparing to make a video of a similar topic about the AF system of Canon R5C. I noticed this one after I met and talked with one Canon technician in Melbourne. Thank you for making this video and sharing the findings. Canon should explain this to the public in a more official way as early as possible, otherwise Canon R5C will lose its market share unnecessarily due to widespread misunderstanding of its AF system.
I appreciate your videos so much as I’m getting into video more. No one talks about the things you do - and you do it so well! No BS! Clear and concise!! Renting the R5C currently and this definitely helped me get things better situated in the Cinema OS! 🙌🏻 thank you!
The thing I still miss in the R5C-AF is the animal-AF, hope the Cinema-AF will once get this upgrade and then I will be happy. While a walking cat can be tracked, it is difficult to see small birds in a tree, in this usecase the R5 is much better, also tracking flying birds works better on a R5. But I agree, the Cinema-AF from the R5C is really good! For me it is absolutely no reason to say that someone should not buy the R5C because of the AF, unless if he/she is not a bird videographer.
Same for me. And not only for animal. But also with people shot. Specially in 4K 120. Happened to me several times when capturing from side or behind! And yes; I do come from the R5/R6 background. For me it is set as whole area from the start. But several time for slow motion I can’t get the auto focus work! Issue with my copy!?
Thanks for this! I actually never even THOUGHT about using the Whole Area option as I thought it would randomly lock onto subjects I didn't want in focus. It makes you wonder why Small and Large focus areas are even an option in the menu! as who wouldn't want to use the entire screen for AF?! I have the tracking option set to button 10 and have used that option extensively to make the AF system act more like the R5 I'm use to. Using Whole Area makes the AF system operate so much more like the R5! Like you said, I may only have to use tracking when using the EVF now. Can't wait to test this out.
The small/large are there when you want to manually AF on a certain point. It's good when you don't want the focus to auto change during a shot. This is what I use all the time, unless there is some fast moving object I need to track.
Bryan, Thank you so much. I've had my R5 C since June and only recently started diving into video. As usual, your video provides great insight and suggestions on getting more from my camera.
Haha! Well this was helpful. Coming from the R6 I was taken back by the way the autofocus was operating out of the box. “whole area” was what I was looking for so thank you!
Great video. I struggled a couple of weeks ago switching focus from bride and groom and could not understand why auto focus wouldn’t let me touch on another person and make the change.
Amazing, thank you - I'm very new to the Canon Cinema cameras (old school 5D4 and R5 R6) and I hated the video AF system on the R5C and was totally gutted when I bought it and spent so much on a rig/vmount etc.. for it, these little tips you keep making are game changers. Thank you so much!
I've been renting an R5C nearly every weekend and it took me a long night of diving into the settings to figure this out as well. I hope future firmware updates make the R5C and the auto focus system a little more intuitive.
These are really good findings! Thanks for sharing! It would be awesome a firmware update that allows the tracker to be dragged in the display while using the viewfinder!
Spoke with a Canon rep at a camera convention and I was left with the impression that they perfectly well could give the R5's AF to the R5C but they just choose not to because a snappy, photo like AF doesnt serve the intrests of the majority of their cinema line users, hence we are left with a more manual focus pull like performance.
Thanks , Keep it coming ! As much R5C content you can make ! Can you make a video on best soc setup for fast delivery then also best streaming settings. May be the same. Also is you evf less contrasty than your lcd?
I use the tracking button I've programmed on my Camera and then select the person I want. The R5C, then does a pretty good job of locking on the subject and not trying to jump to the other person. Have a great day!
thanks a lot - that is eye opening!! - is there a trick to set the AF speed slower? It works with my RF 24-70, but not with your EF 24-70 mk1 (maybe mark2 Allows to set AF Speed?)and my Sigma. The focus shift in your video is much too fast. This doesn't look natural, not like manual. That bothers me a lot.
Thanks for this. What do you do if your camera is set on a rig where you don't have access to the touch panel or joy-stick controls and you want to keep the focus on, say, a moving car?
I am coming from a full manual focus rig and i more and more find the AF System on the R5C (once configured to taste) so good that i am actually considering to sell all the electronic follow focus stuff and manual lenses. it seems that 95% of use cases can be done with the AF, and for the other 5% i guess i can live with the not-so-optimal-to-focus-by-hand EF/RF lenses. one thing that bothers me is that the "tracking" function needs to be put on f.e. button 9 like here in the video to initialize, but once it is on you can press the joystick on the back to get the same function to re-arange the crosshair. why isnt it possible to put the "tracking" function on that joystick in the first place....would be much more intuitive and better to reach. it works in photo mode and is how i have setup my R6 too. why canon?
I still have all my older EF glass, and the AF works great on them. You are missing a few options to fine detail AF, but for all practical purposes they have never let me down on a shoot. Have a great day!
Hey brother awesome videos usual. Hey I'm not sure if it's my phone or your audio but I can hear some artificial noises. I normally get that when I have my wireless transmitter right next to my recorder and I get the same interference. Maybe just my phone but please check your equipment as well.
Thanks for the heads up, I will go back and try and figure that out. I am deaf to all high range sounds (hence the channel name), so if something like that is happening I might not notice. Have a great day!
Hey, I tried to assign button #8 for AF Frame > Small . When I turn the dial to select AF Frame, there is no such option to choose "Small Area" Can you please explain how you set the custom button to Small area on button #8. AF Frame is set Whole Area. Want to go from Whole Area to Small.
Have you had any issues with the focus box disappearing? I’ve tried so many settings and cannot figure out how to get it back on screen in video mode. The autofocus is working but the box isn’t there to move around and see what area it’s focusing on.
I am in love with the camera and its auto focus, 8K RAW and all that, but I can't get the auto focus to work when I am shooting 8K 60. First I thought it was because I am using sigma art lenses but then I tried an actual RF lens and it didn't work. Please help
You can still use AF in 120, but you do lose tracking. I made a video detailing S&F mode and talking about focus that you can watch here: ua-cam.com/video/Upd8MUma6ig/v-deo.html. Have a great day!
I am using EF glass. The only difference you will see in the menu between the EF and RF is going to be in some of your AF speed settings. Have a great day!
No IBIS or touch autofocus and far worse battery life? I see no reason to part with the Canon R5. The R5C doesn’t overheat and has marginally better dynamic range, which means DR still sucks. I’m not a pro and don’t use the video features except for short clips here and there. I love your channel and look forward to every new episode!! Please don’t treat the R5 like a step child and fail to post content about it as if it were no longer worthy of consideration.
Yeah if you're not a video guy this camera is not for you, for me I'm the opposite, video first and like to take a few photo's so the 5C is perfect for me. I don't want Ibis in a pro video camera, it causes more problems for what I shoot than it solves.
@@cruachfilms I am video-first; I'm just not a pro or anything like that. I shoot videos of events, vacations and such, to collect memories. The R5C would be a step backwards for me due to its lack of IBIS, long load times between video/photo mode, atrocious battery life, lack of touch focus, etc.

You can set the digital image stabilization to low, medium or high on the R5C which will have different levels of cropping and with most of the newer lenses they have IS on them so not a big issue with video on this camera. If you are use to the R5 and It does what you need it to, then just continue to improve your skill set on it and forget about all the other cameras.
Having used both for photography, the R5 and R5C are almost identical. The only "downfall" is that the R5C does not have IBIS for photo, so if you are shooting with really slow shutter speeds, you can not get away with it quite as much. I don't consider this a deal breaker, because the R5 and R5C have such clean ISO that if I'm in a dark handheld place I'll usually up the ISO rather than slow down the shutter and risk blur. Honestly, I never really shoot a lot of slow shutter handheld scenes anyway, so this lack of IBIS is not a big deal for me. All that being said, I really feel that when it comes to photos, these two cameras are virtually identical. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
@@DeafDirector Thanks so much. I'm mainly photographer but my clients have been screaming for professional video. Just had R5C delivered, haven't opened it yet.
