Really useful info, thank you. I used S&F mode today and I realised I missed focus when tracking a subject with my gimbal. Helpful for me to understand better the next time I use S&F mode.
Your insight into the R5C is great! A few things... - I have a dedicated button to switch between this S&F mode (where I set my fps to 100) and normal mode (where I switch between 25 & 50 fps). I sometimes loose my 100 fps setting in S&F, it seems to reset to default, if in 25fps it switches to 25, if in 50 it switches to 50. Do you think there's a way to lock in 100fps/25fps? - also, when in S&F, does 25fps/25fps the same as just shooting normal mode 25fps?
Excellent video and love your approach - very informative. Maiden voyage with R5C coming soon when we take it to Wyoming. Plan to use the s&f a lot and thanks for the tips. Also hoping Canon updates the R5C firmware to provide tracking in s&f, like they did on C300iii. Will also be testing that in Wyoming. Thanks again.
Same problem!!!! Anyone fix this? The only way I can record 60p to the Ninja V is if I change the frequency system settings to 60p ... I can't press one button and switch into slow and fast mode.
Thanks for another great explanation, Bryan! 👍🏻I will try to use S&F for my timelapses, it's similar as interval based shooting, but I can have an audio recorded at the same time! 👍🏻
The point you make at roughly 4:00 is a more important point than you acknowledge. If you record at (e.g.) 48 frames per second and it plays back in 48 frames per second (as you (mis)stated at the beginning), it is going to look like normal motion. But (I’m guessing because I haven’t tried it) that isn’t what happens. The camera records in 48 frames per second but the play back is in the fps set in the menu - 24 fps in your example. NOW… it will look like slow motion.
Amazing tips and advice. Question, when using my external monitors like shinobi 7 and shinobi 2 and trying to film in slow motion, the monitors will not show what is being filmed. I can see it on the camera monitor but not on either external monitors. Is this just not going to work? Filming outdoors in full sunlight is pretty hard to do with camera monitor. Not bright enough, hence the atomos monitors
Great to swap between 30fps and 120 but here’s the problem not discussed. Why does the R5 have auto exposure on the 120fps but not the R5C? Why does R5 have remote capability but R5C does not? It’s a giant disappointment to be that much more expensive than R5 but missing key things.
It can be quite baffling. I actually made a whole video about the bluetooth and wifi restrictions. ua-cam.com/video/Hmx1D-nlj8s/v-deo.html. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
Hi All! Great video, thanks, but how can I quickly switch between the 8K 25p to 4k 120p recording option without changing manually in menue? As far I remember the R5 had the C1-C3 function for it. How to make simple for the R5c ?
hey man! thanks for the video! I have been trying to find a way to simple work on a 24fps or 30fps but in slow shutter mode for some extra motion blur effect and I just purchased this camera and there is no way I make this work out. Do you have a solution? thanks man!
I’m having issues setting up the S$F/Audio(wav) to record sound and record video slowed down. I tried to set it up where my CFExpress card is the video but I cant set the audio to my secondary card for some reason. What am I doing wrong? Also, is there a way to set it to a button on the R5C so I can switch back and forth easily?
At the 02:15 mark you mention that in S&F mode the camera will also record the audio as a separate file. Will this work if you set the framerate to 120fps?
As an R5 user i was really surprised when I hired the R5c that it was missing AF tracking - i spent ages trying to find out where I was going wrong with the modes before resigning to the fact that it just wasn’t possible. The lack of this feature really put me off upgrading. Great video!
Hey Jamie, the R5C, actually does have tracking in 24, 30 and 60fps. It's a little tricky to find, but I did an earlier video on it. (ua-cam.com/video/7S75hjt9sWA/v-deo.html) But I still think the R5 still has a more intuitive and better AF than the R5C. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
Were you able to send out the S&F frame rates to your atomos recorder and have the recorder detect 48fps? That’s the issue I ran in to when I took the r5c for a test drive. At this point I’m assuming that S&F can only be used internally on the camera itself as it’s not supported via HDMI out.
That is correct. This is for internal recording only. The HDMI will output this as whatever your base recoding rate is. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
Hey Stewart, for me it's a completely subjective thing, but I love how 96fps plays out motion wise versus 120fps. It gives me a nice sense of grand motion, without slowing things down too much. It is a frame rate that also works great for music videos. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
Great video! The only thing that confuses me is when I bring my footage into Premiere. I shot a clip at 120/60. I know I'm missing something but when I bring it into premiere, how do I access that 120fps, because the clip shows 59.976. Confused and could use some help!
it sounds to me its just doing the modifying for you in camera. normally you'd modify your clips to the same fps as your sequence.. since you;ve chosen 60fps but have S&F at 120, means your footage is probably at 50% speed and you're going to need to create a 60fps sequence.. that's how i understand it. i've just got my R5C so not really played with it yet. and given this was a yr ago, i'm sure you figured it out.. but for anyone who's new to understanding frame rates / sequences this should come in handy.
Brilliant video as usual. So p!$$ed at Canon for removing the tracing on 120fps. We film fast moving objects at that rate so its imperative. Canon are always knee capping us.
So I'm pretty new to video and just picked up the R5C. I've shot two weddings so far with an R but wanted something a little better. I just don't really understand the difference between all the CP files (bt 709 Wide Dr./canon log 3/bt 709 Standard..etc) I feel like my footage is good but I'm having difficulty getting the colors to really pop. Im trying to be true to color but everything seems a little flat. (I'm not shooting C Log 3..im too scared..lol) Ive been trying to find videos for help in understanding these settings but I can't find a single one. If anyone can help point me in a direction where I can learn that would be very helpful!
It can be a bit daunting when you are first making the transition, but rest assured with a little patience and practice it will make sense. To get the most out of the sensor, I would recommend shooting in CLog 3 with Cinema Gamut. The good news is that Canon makes a free set of official LUTs that you can easily apply in your editor of choice and it will instantly pop your images up. I will include a link for the Canon LUTs at the end of this. Make sure you go to the 3DLut folder, choose the 65grid-3dlut folder, and then apply "CinemaGamut_CanonLog3-to-BT709_WideDR_65_FF_Ver.2.0.cube" Once applied on the CLog3 footage you can then do the final tweaks to get what you want. Once you do this you should be blown away by the quality of your R5C vs the R. Of course, I recommend practicing this before you are on an actual wedding, so you are comfortable with the process. You can find the LUTs here: canoncanada.custhelp.com/app/answers/answer_view/a_id/1032577/~/canon-lookup-table-version-201911 Have a great day!
Sounds like your camera is in PAL mode.On most cameras you can easily fix this by setting your camera to NTSC Mode. If you are on the Canon R5C set your System Frequency to 59.94Hz. That will get you 23.98, 24 and 60 fps. Have a a great day!

any advice for the shakiness? with no ibis?
I noticed that once you pushed past 60 frames per second say up to 72, 96 or 120 you lose autofocus? Why is this?
It sucks bc the canon 1dx ii had 120fps with tracking. This is a newer, and supposed to be higher end yet it lacks tracking at S&F mode, common Canon.
Thanks for this!
Out of curiosity, is there a reason you are recording externally on the Ninja?
Any idea why I can't see it on my Ninja V? As soon as I switch the frame rate past 24 fps it shuts off HDMI connection.
