This was so helpful! I have an ancient Kohler that was having issues running constantly and I needed to replace the flush valve. Your instructions were really easy to understand and I appreciate you linking the tools you used as well! Thanks so much 🙏

This video was a life and money saver. I watched it several times before I went in and attempted this repair. A little challenging but you made it so much easier. I survived and succeeded. 🤗🤗 What surprises me the most is that many people go to the hardware store to buy toilet repair products, but do not know the brand of the toilet. I have a Kohler in one rest room and an American standard in the other. This is good info to have when asking for help at the store. Thank you for the info you record for us. God bless you. 🙏🙏

I stumbled on here looking at who has torn apart a Koehler fill valve. Just want to say that it’s great to see folks do things right and go that extra step like cleaning out the tank and all. Taking pride in work, and not leaving a mess are traits passed along to me as a kid. 50 plus years later. In IT world now and ready to retire and do small handyman stuff. (Miss it)

Your welcome. I wonder how the flush would be if you did a retro fit with the newer type stuff.

Great Video. I always turn off the water at the main where the meter reader reads your usage. That way, I don't turn off old interior valves that are prone to leaking. I want to work on the toilet--not have to replace a new valve also.

Definitely a very helpful video brother. This one should definitely should get shared because every home owner is going to have to do this at some point. I agree that the chain is the worst part of this whole job I absolutely hate messing with it.

Thank you Steve. I agree that everyone will have to do it at some point. Let’s rebuild instead of replace. Hope you are having a great weekend.

real question, are the bottom of the toilet tanks supposed to be flat or at an angle 📐? Cuz one toilet i replaced parts for, i see it goes from a lower angle at the front of the tank and goes up slightly angle towards the back of the tank. So was wondering if that is normal or should it be flat at the bottom completely horizontal? Because i feel this angle 📐 bottom toilet tank is why im getting problems. Because i have 4 toilets in my house. And i replaced all the insides before on 3 toilets and no problem. Then this last 4th toilet, its the only one giving my problems tightening the 3 bolts because of that dumb lower to higher angle 📐 bottom of toilet tank. Where i cant tighten anymore because now the tank touches the bowl porcelain on porcelain and will break if i tighten anymore. And all the rest of the 3 toilets always had a little gap between tank and bowl so the porcelain never touched.
PS: Edit: I also see in your video when your showing the water cut off your installing, i can see the tank has that little gap so the tank is not touching the bowl porcelain. Like normal. My one toilet 🚽 tank is touching porcelain and so i cant tighten anymore and this gives problems. None of my other 3 toilets ever touch porcelain to porcelain.

Hello Brian, thank you for showing us how to make the repairs. I am always afraid that I am going to over tighten the tank bolts and that I am going to hear a loud CRACK as I am tightening! Maybe they say that kit will not fit because they want people to buy a whole new toilet! Thank you and thumbs UP!

Your welcome Richard. I’ve been there. Have not cracked man tanks, but of course I cracked the one I was installing in my house. 😂. You can always snug up if there’s a drip! Should have mentioned that. Thank you and have a great weekend.

I use a sponge which is typically used for cleaning ceramic tile for soaking the tank water AND any water in the bowl and trap.

I saw a white glue stain in the toilet tank
Do you know what that white caulking is used for?

Hey man quick question, are the bolts from inside when you tight them do they go in the plastic hole from the gasket

  • @ShirlyLyubomirsky

Excellent explanation. I'm trying to replace just the canister seal and twisting the center piece is giving me lots of resistance due to calcification. Is soaking with vinegar going to eat up the other seals?

Great job, everything you need to know to replace the guts of a toilet. Why is the water line metal at the source and plastic at the attachment to the toilet tank? I had one burst at the tank causing a huge problem. Now it is metal at both ends of the supply line for me. (Granted it was over 30 years, but no plastic for me ever again.)

Canister is the worst thing ever, limiting the amount of water in the flush. It's like tossing a cup of water in the bowl. Only about 1/4 of the water in the tank actually enters the bowl. Therefore the bowl does not flush thoroughly and is always dirty. Do you have a video of swapping out the canister with a standard flapper so the whole tank empties? Is there a standard flapper kit to fit the two piece Devonshire? Ideally you could keep the tank seal in place and just swap to a flapper valve instead of having to remove the tank.

I would have thought so too, but not the case Greg. That is how much chlorine is in her water. Crazy.
