  • I show how to replace all the parts inside a Kohler 3-bolt toilet tank. I'm using the Fluidmaster Everything toilet tank repair kit. It replaces the toilet fill valve, the toilet flush valve, the toilet tank to bowl gasket, bolts and handle.

Success! I have a Kohler toilet, purchased the universal kit and followed the instructions to the letter. It all worked as described. I actually couldn't believe it worked, as Kohler is usually a giant pain to fix anything on them. For those interested, I found the Universal Repair Kit with the red and green tools at Lowe's. They were the only ones on the Internet I could find who carried the full kit with the tools included. As a side note, the only way to get that old triangle gasket off is to cut it off. After that, it was a piece of cake. Best of luck to all of you!

This is one of the best investments you can make if you are a fix-it type person.
This kit not only gives you ALL the parts that go bad, but gives you 2 tools that really speed up the process.
For those of you with an "evil" Kohler toilet with the three-eared lower seal, this set also gives you the special tool to remove and install the large retaining nut on the bottom of the fill tank. Using these parts and that tool was hugely easier and faster than the first time I tried to fix a Kohler. Wow, what a bad experience that was.
    Anyway - highly recommended !!
I will also offer my own special trick- actually not a trick at all. When replacing the tank on any 2-piece toilet I have found that if the seal is dry it might not move around to the correct location to make a seal, so I put a little liquid soap on it so it slides around a bit and finds it's happy place and makes a good seal.

      I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT.
      Haha.
Real reply: No, the liquid soap doesn't interfere with the function of the seal. It simply helps it to form to any minute irregularities of the ceramic rim.

My instruction manual was missing everything after page 10 in English and Spanish (I got two sets of those pages in one half-stapled booklet), and your video saved me. The Fluidmaster video also didn't tell me to not use the rubber washers on the tank-to-bowl attachment, and you did. Great video. Thanks so much!

wow! I looked at others on the net, and yours was fabulous in comparison. You walked through each step and explained. One question I have, or is it just a statement that my logic is correct. I have three holes but those rubber thingies on the gasket wouldn't push into the hole. The rubber plug thingies that the 3 bolts to through... waaaaaaaaay to big. Since the ones that I pulled out had the washers within the bowl, I used that way. Also, I compared the BIG black vs. red gasket thingy at the bottom... and since was comparative to the black one, I used that one and cut of the 3 plug thingies attached to it as it has worked for over 25 years that way without the 3 black plugs! What a WONDERFUL kit with those WONDERFUL tools! Thanks. I purchased the everything kit yesterday at Home Depot for $19.98 (October 2021)

The bolts that connect to the closet flange get 2 extra nuts and washers and secure the bolts to the flange and that will keep them from moving on ya also don’t install the tank to the bowl until you have already installed the bowl. Those older water closets are very heavy and in balanced. Also be careful when you tighten the tank bolts it will crack either the tank or bowl. Hope this helps

It shows 3 scenarios- Kohler, Gerber, & Universal. In the video, he is fixing a Kohler commode. If you look at the diagram on the package, it shows NO red fat gasket is used for the Kohler models. Assemble as he does in the video without it - if you are fixing a Kohler.

My house was built in 1915. I have lived in the house for 42 years since 1979. The Basement bathroom has about a two-inch raised concrete floor. The basement toilet would normally sit on top of the concrete floor bolted to the flange, but this toilet actually sits in the concrete floor. So the concrete surrounds the bottom of the toilet holding it in place. I rather not attempt to remove the toilet that is cemented in place as I would be opening a can of worms. The tank works (it has 3 holes just like in the video but I have no idea of the model. The lid which is not the right lid is cracked but epoxied so it stays together but it is not a great fit. I was thinking of replacing the tank and lid but as I said I have no idea of the brand. I tried to measure the distances between the three holes. I did not get an exact measurement but they form a triangle with a measurement of approx 4 inches, 4 inches, and 5 inches. That is approximate, I do not know if all three hole tanks have the same dimensions? Is there any way to find a matching white porcelain tank and a tank top that would work with a very old toilet? The old tank holds a lot of water. Do you think I could use the same kit you used? The bolts from the tank to the toilet are quite rusted and don't know if it is worth attempting to remove them. As I write this I think the best thing to do is to just leave the old tank, since it works, change the flapper when needed, at least I would still have a working basement toilet. I just thought that changing the tank and lid would look more attractive., but it might not be worth all the headaches and work. Just wanted to get your opinion. Thanks

Hi, there have been so many changes to toilets because of water restrictions over the years, I think you would have a hard time finding a match for the tank. There aren't many models I've seen with the 3 bolts like this, so it may line up. I think if you prep the tank and use an appliance spray paint, you could get an updated look.

Video production does not get better than this. I needed to replace my Kohler parts but I usually avoid videos because I find most to bs poorly edited with excessive dialogue that makes it unnecessarily lengthy. I wish they are all as brief and informative as this.
I also wish I had purchased the
kit you used instead of Koehler’s OEM-branded parts because the green wrench would have saved me time. Finally, the fill valve on Koehler’s part came with several colored plugs from which the tube extends and there is barely any difference between them. Is this a significant part?

Better to just change your toilet at this point. Slowly they're going away from this style of toilet and very difficult for replacing the gasket.
Modern toilets will have only 2 bolts on each side if it's a 2 piece toilet

the original way kolhers tank to bowl is a piss poor way to engineer a toilet...the guy that thought this up does'nt have to work on them...I completely change the gasket when I have to work on one...much easier and cheaper...
