- The top twists off to replace the toilet gasket on Kohler flush valve repair. The Kohler canister-type flush valve gasket seal is replaced by:
1. Flush the toilet and turn off the water supply.
2. Push down and turn the guide post at the center of the canister 1/4 turn in counter-clockwise direction to separate the canister.
3. Remove it from the tank.
4. Pull the gasket from the bottom of the canister and replace it with a new one.
5. Reinstall the canister by inserting the guide post, and lock it with ¼ turn in clockwise direction.

I learned something here. Thanks.
Why do those guys keep inventing difficult and unusual mechanisms that a simple flapper achieves? Blair
I wish I could replace with a flapper but kohler has some odd size.so cant be done...
Kohler Black Canisters only flush about 3.5 inches of water.. ua-cam.com/video/op4vqDESwrc/v-deo.html
I've watched 15 or so videos trying to diagnose what exactly needs replaced, took less than a minute in your video and it's clearly explained! Thank you
Finally I found the video I needed. I think. Yes, we have some intermittent water loss. The bigger issue is that we no longer have the 'power' flush for some reason. The toilet will hardly flush 1 piece of toilet paper!
Thank you. This is a true professional that knows exactly how things are built. You gave clear and detail explanation; you were talking in a very calm manner while keeping the instructional video short. This is a rare teaching ability. I've seen other DIYs video that wanted to replace everything and needed to take the entire toilet bowl off just to replace the gasket. Those fools are wasting money and time.
Thank you
Lifesaver! Thank you! Been waiting 2 weeks for my husband or son to fix it because I thought i had to remove the tank. Watched your video and I fixed it myself in 3 minutes, super easy!!
My husband bought the replacement canister part for our Kohler toilet 2 YEARS AGO but kept saying he couldn’t find info online how to fix it. Searched it because I was tired of him turning off the water to the toilet and hearing the refill sound constantly when I found this easy tutorial 🙄 needless to say, I’m doing it myself. THANK YOU!
Men!
@@ottomatic7823hey hey... You should turn those valves a few times a year anyway. He was being cautious...

Thanks dude. Didn't know it came apart, was about to get the tools to take off the tank. The yellow cap broke on mine, such an easy fix.
Thank you! I am a single lady and fixed my own toilet with a $6.98 gasket from Home Depot!!!!!!! Saved a lot of $$ not calling a plumber and and am pretty proud of myself!!!
Great video that made changing this gasket a breeze! Thanks Mr. Hardware!!
This video was very helpful! Even before I started having issues with the toilet running I was getting that every 20 minute mystery flush. While the top of my post was black instead of yellow everything came apart as indicated and replacing the gasket was easy. At Lowes in addition to the Korky gasket they also had a yellow Kohler gasket so I went with that one so I wouldn't have to toss the American Standard gasket in the trash (which if you do I suggest cutting it so it doesn't become entangled on an animal who gets in the landfill). I will add that it makes sense to see if there is dirt on the bottom piece in which case use a toothbrush to clean the surface for a good seal. Everything works great now except there's a little more slack in the chain than I would like but not quite enough to remove a link. Thanks again!
Thank you so much! I could see where the problem was with the kit that I bought at the store basically told me I needed to take the tank off which was ridiculous. Thanks to your video. I was able to just switch out the faulty part.
Glad I watched this video first. I almost bought the whole assembly for $21 because I didn't realize you could replace only the gasket for $6. Thanks for the video!
Just wanted to thank you for this video, because Ferguson said that we had to take the tank off to make this repair and sold us the whole assembly on top of that. My wife talked to them and went and got what was needed for the repair of the toilet running occasionally between flushes. Well that sounded crazy so we started searching and Hurray!! Thank you SO Much!!! God Bless YOU!!
Thank you so much!!! it had been driving me nuts that I could not get my toilet pieces apart
This video was exactly what I needed to see. The little tabs at the bottom of the guide post had snapped off so I needed to replace it. My plumber (after hours on Friday night) said they didn't carry that part and I said okay I need you to put in a new toilet. He said they don't do that on weekends so I turned to You Tube. I found your video but no Hardware store or Home Depot carried the part. I found it on Amazon. I am older so have shopped online before but never on Amazon so I had to set up an account and was able to get the part delivered on Sunday. It was a struggle to get the guide post out but with a little patience (not my best quality) I got it out of the cannister. Putting the new one (and the gasket) on took all of 2 minutes. Cost me $32. I was ready to put out about $600 for a new toilet to be installed on a weekend. Thank you for an easy to follow video.
This video saved me looks of work. Thank you!
I watched other videos and thought that I would need to remove the whole tank, just to repair the broken center post, but the repair kit was all that I needed. Total time to repair was less than 5 minutes.
Thank you for posting this detailed, easy-to-follow video on how to replace a Kohler toilet canister flush valve gasket seal! I can't remember how many years it has been since I replaced the canister, however I always forget how to remove the top part of the canister in order to replace the gasket. When I tried removing the canister after following your video, changing the gasket seal took less than a minute! I appreciate your video that eliminated the frustration and aggravation that I would have probably experienced in trying to figure out how to remove the canister. Plus, I didn't end of breaking the thing to boot! Cheers!
Your video is the best by far. Simple, clear, getting to the point. Thank you!
Super helpful video! I didn't realize I had a Kohler and this video made it so simple!
Thank you! This saved me so much effort. Just bought a new seal ring from Amazon, followed this video and replaced the old ring which caused my toilet to run every 20min. It worked!
Thank you 😊 so very much! You explained it so quickly and easy. Got it fixed for 7 dollars and save a costly call to the plumber. Only took a few minutes.!!
No one at my local hardware or at Home Depot could help. I researched to buy the parts and watched your video for instruction. Perfect. Many thanks
You The Man Mr. Hardware. Because of you I'm not a plumbers apprentice.
Thanks for the video, what I thought was going to be a major project took only 10 minutes.
Good instruction that made the job easier than I thought it would be. And it took all of 10 minutes to complete.
Thanks.
Thanks Blair, well done. Best help video on UA-cam.
Thank You! I thought I needed to turn the four-horned assembly below.I was in search of a tool to do that. With your info, this should be easy and cheaper too by far.
Did it successfully.
I did exactly as you told us. Bought the Korky gasket and replaced it within no time. Super easy. It worked. Thank you so much...
Hello Mr. Gilbert. You rock!!! Just fixed my daughter's toilet in minutes instead of hiring someone. Thanks for your great video!!!
Thanks Blair. Just got a new tank for my 18yr old Kholer (old one cracked) and is has this mysterious canister thing. Now I know how it works.
Thanks, I bought the whole setup and just that canister part I needed. Twisted it off, replaced my old one, done in 5minutes
Thanks for the great demo. Got the seal replaced without damaging anything and not one cuss word. If I may add a tiny tip of my own… when removing the valve at the bottom point and it is sticking, wiggle it ever so gently back and forth until you achieve the quarter turn. That and lift the canister and do the twisting from the top and bottom of the post at the same time. Better leverage with less force exerted on the plastic post and dog ears.
It’s a shame that the engineered something that’s so fragile
Great video as always. When you share your knowledge and ability, everyone benefits.
thanks, Blair and Tim
This part here at 3:44 saved us from trying to take off the entire tank or from getting a plumber out. Thank you for posting the video, it really helped!
This is a great video!! Able to quickly identify the part that was broken. Well done!
Excellent video, straight to the point, simple and easy to understand
My seal was just dislodged but this video saved me a trip to the hardware store and some money! Thank you!
Thank you so much for your video! I was struggling on how to do it, after watching your video, it took me 2 minutes to do it.
Thank you!!
GREAT video!
I did just as he instructed and had the whole thing fixed in less than 3 min.
I have a Mansfield toilet and this was super helpful. Thank you!
I would like to add my thanks to you for a great demonstration for dummies like me. I changed the seal in 5 minutes.
Thank you! I learned what I needed to in order to fix my valve on my own. Thanks again!
Thanks Mr. Hardware, you're the best.
I learned everything I needed in the 1st few seconds. I need to replace the flush the other part, smh. Thanks so much for this video
Thanks, Mr. Hardware! I was able to do it. Easy-peasy.
This video is a life saver. I don't need to take apart the toliet, just need to replace the ring. nice and easy.
Thanks, Mr. Hardware. Excellent video!
This has been a problem for a very long time. I think I can do this myself watching what you have done. The seal is no longer there, that's how long it's been.. Thank you for this, I can't afford a plumber, so this old girl is going to give a shot.
Great video! Super helpful and concise. Nice job, and thank you!
Thanks, we try to make the easy look that way. Blair and Tim
You are fantastic!! Thank you so much for your videos!!!!!
Thank you so much!!!! You had the best and easiest solution!! I just changed my flush valve thingy!! Thanks
Thank you for the quick fix info. You saved me a lot of unnecessary work.
Very good explanation. Helped me immensely. Thanks
Great video. Saved me a lot of time. Please keep doing videos.
Was going to buy a new canister. Seal worked fine. Thank you
Great instructions from a Great American
Thank you so much! I was totally confused on how to get it out and it had just become stuck a bit. I just needed to know I wasn't breaking it by turning it. I did find it easier to pull the sleave up and twist from the base. I couldn't get the top to twist at all.
Amazing, I was twisting the center post cap the wrong way thank you for sharing!
Exactly the info I needed to fix my toilet. Thank you!
Exactly what I needed to know to fix my issue, thank you.
Thank you for the great information on the replacement process. 😀
Why do those guys keep inventing difficult and unusual mechanisms that a simple flapper achieves?
Our old buddy Democrat Al Gore spear headed and passed laws to not waste flushed toilet water. Therefore if you have a central flush valve that lifts out of the way and immediately allowing water to rush in from 360 degrees, then less water can "almost" flush efficient. ..........
So when you're wasting more time to flush down and multi-flushing your toilet wasting more water and time than in the past, You can thank the United State's Communist party for messing up your life and gaining less efficiency as a result. ..........

You saved me so much time 🎉 🙏. I liked and subscribed
Absolutely brilliant ! I am ready to fix my toilet myself.
THANK YOU SO MUCH.
You saved me $180 handyman fee to do this in less than 5 min for $ .001 just a1/2 tank of water.
Your video was the 1 out of 20 videos that md sence & addressed the exact problem.
Did Kohler mk this thing to constantly pop off? It's a new toilet & the red gasket keeps popping off.
Thanks again..
I hope you got a bad gasket or for some reason it’s going on wrong, because it should never pop off.
Worked like a charm, thanks !
Thanks a lot ! Mr.Hardware. I save up to 40 bucks to buy the gasket only instead of the whole set!
Such clear instructions! Thank you
You answered my question perfectly. Thanks for your video.
Amazing exactly what you just said. Thank you for the pointers
Thank you, Good information quick and thorough.👍
This my exact problem. Glad I saw your video. Thanks

I want to work in your store. Looks like a great place!
Great job explaining this fix. I owe you a cold beer!
Nice I just replaced the center post and it’s good as new
All simple stuff here, but it sab=ve me a lot of frustrating searches as I hadn't worked with the Kohler cannister valve before. Thanks.
Excellent, helpful video
Outstanding presentation. I subscribed to your channel. First one!
Thank you for the great info👍🏾👍🏾
Great video! Thanks sir.
Thank you. Very helpful.
Leaking flush valve, so I went to Home Depot. DON'T. They'll sell you Kohler toilets all day long but carry zero internals. Once I discovered the odd-looking cannister flush valve was a Kohler unique product, I ordered a new unit online with the unique tank to bowl gasket (since I had removed the tank), delivered in 24 hours, all back together and tested in several minutes. My other Kohler toilet leaks enough to maybe refill 1/2" every day or two, so I'll go the simple cannister gasket replacement. Thanks for this!
Often it is sufficient to just clean off the old gasket. Algae builds up and inhibits the seal, but if you just remove the gasket and clean it off, it fixes the problem. I still have a new yellow replacement gasket here after years, still unopened, since once I had removed the old gasket, I first tried just cleaning the old gasket, which worked. It doesn't hurt to also wipe off the surfaces the gasket contacts too.
Thanks. Perfect advice. I’m back in business.
Well done!
Excellent video still.
Thanks so much
I wonder why Koehler is unable to make such videos?
