Got a Kohler toilet that won't stop running, that flushes intermittently, or that leaks (slowly or quickly)? Chances are good that five minutes and a $7 replacement gasket will take of the problem for you. It's easy and doesn't require tools.
This fix is for toilets like the Kohler Wellworth series.
Lots of you suggested removing the rock. It was there when we bought the house and didn't seem to cause any problems, but I've removed it just to be safe. Thanks for sharing your reasoning, folks!

Just completed gasket repair of my Koehler toilet with your directions. I am a female 82 years old and if I can do this anyone can. Thank you! The last time I had a plumber do this it cost me $95.00. My cost was $9.00 for three gaskets.
Nice work! I'm so glad you were able to fix it yourself!
Me too!! Thanks so much!!!!
I had a hardware store counter guy warn me to NOT twist the disc at the top, but to reach down under and twist the base. He says he has several people a month come in with the disc broken off. I did this seal replacement to day and took his advice, worked fine. In this video your hear the creak as he twists it, that's the bound up base that can cause it to break.
The seal was a 2-pak for $10
Good tip! Thanks for sharing!
I followed your video, perhaps the most complete and clear instruction video for this, and replaced my badly worn gasket in about five minutes. I was ready to call a plumber before your video. Thanks for saving me a lot of money on a very easy repair!
I'm so glad you were able to fix it!
First time I've fixed something on my own without having to hire a professional. Thanks so much!!!!
Well done!
I didn’t think I would find a video on changing the seal, but this is great! 👍🏻
Your video was really helpful! We had a toilet that started running late this afternoon. After watching your video, we flipped the canister over and pulled off the gasket that was original to the toilet which was right at a year old. It was a red one, and it had little pimple like bumps on its top and bottom. Don’t know if this is the design or a defect. Anyway, my husband took it to Lowes and bought the $8 replacement and put it on. It worked like a charm. So far the toilet is not running and there is no leakage. You came to the rescue on a Sunday evening. Thank you sir!
Excellent video with step by step instructions, as well as the part number you need. Easy fix and good job. Once I had the gasket out of the package it took about 3 minutes to remove the old gasket, place the new one, and reassemble everything.
Thank you so much! Great instructions wicked easy to follow. You saved us a call to the plumber and taught us something.
Thank you Hollis, you are my hero! Worked as you said it would. Appreciate your adding the fact that it's important to wipe around the seal seat in the tank (debris from the old rotted seal was caked on it) --- no one else on youtube, even from Kohler!, suggested to do that and it is so important.
Thank you for posting this! $8 and a 10 minute fix. You saved me $100 minimum plumber call!
after nearly 6 mos of having the part and my husband not taking the hint, you saved me from calling a Plumber. Easy Peasy to repair. Thanks for the video
You're welcome! Glad it helped, and thanks for subscribing.
I bet you also paid a lot of money on water bill.
As a skeptic, this video was easy to follow and actually worked. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I just replaced mine and followed your video for the instructions which were great.
This was the solution I was looking for. Worked like a charm.
I've been putting this off for months. Your video helped and showed me how to replace the gasket. Thanks so much.
You're so welcome! Glad it helped!
Grab from the bottom when twisting the quarter turn if it's too tight from the top. Great Vid!
Very helpful, thank you! We had two leaks like this in our house simultaneously (Kohler toilets installed at the same time) and I thought it would take me hours to remove tanks and replace everything when I knew it was just the gasket, but I didn't know who even produced the parts I was looking at (I didn't install the toilets). 5 min video and 15 minutes to replace both gaskets is probably the easiest fix of anything I've ever dealt with!
Great job. About the easiest fix I have ever seen and I can't believe I had it down at the bottom of the Honey Do List.....Thank you Sir. Blaine Goocher Sr.
This video is so helpful! I bought the gasket from Home Depot and fixed the leak in few minutes. Two thumbs up!
Thank you, and thanks for subscribing. I'm glad it worked for you!
I just changed the gasket myself and I know I had to have saved a ton of money. I wasn't familiar with this type of toilet since everywhere I have lived had older toilets but this is so simple and easy.
This was very helpful to me. I was able to fix our toilet that had been running for quite some time. You described the problem and solution very simply and clearly. My toilet is fixed and I had the satisfaction of doing it myself. I'm not sure I would have tried without seeing this video. The instructions on the seal package were not good. Thank you so very much!!
You're so welcome! I'm glad you were able to fix it yourself!
Thanks! I figured out this was leaking and thought I had to replace the whole valve -- and was wondering where to get a 4" open end wrench to remove it. UA-cam to the rescue (again) all I needed was a seal.
I bought 2 kohler toilets at the same time...they both started doing this exactly 3 years later! 🤨 thanks for the video that’s why I came here! 🙏🏻
Thanks, It worked fine, I bought one on eBay, The original was red and the yellow replacement was slightly smaller with a more snug fit. So far doing great.
I have never seen this canister SYSTEM BEFORE...I HAD NO CLUE WHEN MY FATHER IN LAW WANTED ME TO STOP LEAKING CANISTER SEAL.....YOUR SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS MADE IT A 5 MINUTE JOB AND SAVED HIM A LOT OF MONE Y...….THANK YOU VERY MUCH....RLS …..
Thanks so much!. One of the toilets in our house had this exact problem and I was not familiar with this type of toilet mechanism. Thanks to this video I took care of it in minutes.
You explained this repair very well. I really find it helpful. I placed a brick inside water tank to save water ,it will work. Thank you !
Super helpful. Recognized that the gasket was the issue, just was unsure on how to remove the cylinder to replace. This video was the perfect assist. Will also snag the the Vermont rock trick as well 👍
+Richard Fulgoni I'm so glad it was helpful!
If you'd be willing to subscribe to my channel, that would help me. UA-cam is changing how they handle channels, and subscription don't matters a lot more than it used to. Thanks!
Good job on the video over the years I've replaced many flappers without even turning the water off this will be my first canister seal.
This saved me a $200 visit! Thank you so much. It took two weeks to get the part because Home Depot, Lowes, and Amazon were all sold out 🫤
Thank you. Worked like you said. I was nervous about breaking the valve but your comments helped.
Bam...it took me less than 1/2 hour to change out both! Thanks for helping me save some money, plus I get the satisfaction of having done it myself!! As a woman, that’s a huge plus.
I was able to fix my toilet because of the help I got from this video. Thank you.
I'm so glad! Well done!
Great video, akkpiper! I replaced the rubber seal for my Kohler toilet that kept having "phantom flush" issues and now it's quiet like a good toilet should be. :)
An excellent explanation how to replace the seal in Kohler toilet. Had the same problem today & after watching this video I was able to fix it in 10 Minutes. Thanks so much sharing this vide. We need more people like you who can explain step by step & an easy way.
Thank you so much for the detailed feedback, Nirmal! I really appreciate it! Thanks for subscribing to my channel.
I found your video very helpful. I had the water turned off for two weeks waiting for the gasket. I replaced it and turned the water back on but the tank won’t fill? Nothings happening
Thank you so much… I have watch over five videos and your video help me to start and finish the job. Thank you so much.
Excellent video! Was able to replace mine without any issues. Thanks so much!
We bought our house 10 years ago and installed the new Kohler elongated toilet w/ the canister flapper. It lasted about 9 years and 10 months. Bought the seal yesterday and thought I'd check youtube for surprises. That's much easier than replacing the old flapper style. Thanks.
You're welcome! If you'd be willing to subscribe, that helps my channel a lot. Thanks!
@@adkpiper Sure... "Subscribe DONE"... feel free to subscribe to my channe too if you like... my name.
I went to holliseaster.com and listened to your Frost and Fire cuts... favorite was the Recording Software Blues... If I had three thumbs to put UP I would give'm to you. You ever do anyone else's stuff? I'm no singer and not much of a guitar player either but I'd love to hear your voice and guitar skills attached to a couple of my songs. By the way... I've waded in and skipped rocks on Loch Lomond as a child and my Plaid bound copy of Burns complete works from his birthplace was burned in a house fire.
Thanks for a great tutorial! I was able to replace my seal without any issues
You saved me a lot of money. Thank you. I did exactly what you did and it worked.
Thanks for posting this video. My toilet mechanism - exactly this. Makes me feel like Superman when I do these. I’m going in in the morning.
Thanks for this video I was going crazy trying to figure out why my water kept running. I only had the toilet for a year in a half. That’s what the problem was the seal bubble up on one side and that’s why it was leaking. Your video was very helpful.
Thank You. I thought it was going to be a massive repair. It shouldn’t be bad now.
Yay! No more constantly running toilet!!! And it only cost me about 8 bucks and 10 minutes of my time. Thank you!
You're so welcome!
thanks for the making the video, my gasket just came loose and I was able to move it back in under 2 mins.. Saved me money
Glad I could help!
Thank you for link to the part on Amazon; I searched beforehand but could only find the Kohler double pack, and don't need two!
Glad I watched your video...easy peasy! Thanks for taking the time to do this.
Running into this myself. Never seen a system like that before. It looks more complicated than it actually is. The red rubber seal on mine is becoming very loose and floppy, so it's coming off the cylinder very easily. Just ordered the part from your link!
Thanks so much -- I would never have fixed this without your video -- Twisting off the top was sketchy -- It seemed like it was going to break. Fairly easy and just a few minutes over 5 -- Our gasket looked like a war zone compared to your's.
I'm so glad it worked! Thanks for commenting and subscribing (if you did)!
Very helpful! Exactly what I needed to fix my issue. Thank you!
I guess I needed to turn it harder. I also tightened the handle lever after replacing the seal but it was too tight, resulting in the entire canister coming off with the first flush. I put it all back together and tightened the flush lever again and it is working. Thanks for your video. Very helpful. This was my first one.
I meant loosened the flush lever*
Thank you for this video it helped me from spending money replacing the whole flush setup
Worked like a charm. I don't know why I waiting so long, thanks!
Thanks! I wasn't sure how to get that thing lose. Same here, I bought my home and the toilet tank was leaking into the toilet for just a few seconds every once in a while. It looks like the previous owner had all kinds of calking or silicone or something in there trying to fix it. I took a hard plastic brush had brushed all that out and followed this tutorial. The toilet is as good as new.
Thanks for sharing, was wondering myself whether liquid silicone might be a better fix than replacing the gasket. Sounds like replacing the gasket is the way to go!
Thank you very much I have been having this issue for month with no solution now it's working great again
Very helpful and a bit slow paced--for those who are a bit slower on the uptake. Saved me consulting with a plumber. Thanks!!
You're welcome! Glad it helped.
My Kohler slow leaked out of the box but at the time I thought it was my new bidet. Tried quite a few things, spent a lot of time with videos, and over a year later fixed it with a simple gasket. Now why did Kohler sell a toilet with an inferior gasket? Who knows but I am sure it builds up a lot of customer resentment. Thank you adkpiper for allowing me to fix this long standing problem.
Thank you so much. this video was very helpful as I have the exact same problem and same brand of toilet. thanks again for making my life easier 👍👍
Thanks a lot! Clear, consistently, up to the point.
Thanks for the helpful video. This thing looked complex, but you simplified it.
Thank you for this, easy fix that saved a call to my landlord!
Found this very helpful! It took the worry out of "Can I really do this myself?!" Thank you!
+Chris Rand thanks so much, and I'm glad it helped. I hope you were successful!
If you'd be willing to subscribe, that would help me a bunch. Thanks!
Very helpful. Thank you for saving me lots of time and money!
thank you for this Info , i will need to do this myself, and was unsure on how to replace the Seal !
Thank you for this....helped me out perfectly.
THANKS SOOO much. i tried reversing the direction of the seal and so far no watery noises from the toilet in my 2nd bathroom.
Thank you, adkpiper. This is exactly the tip/demonstration I was looking for!
good video, short and to the point.... just the way I like it... Thanks !!
Mahalos for the instructional video. It was very helpful. Blessings, Bert
Okay, Im going to try and fix my leaking Kohler toilet, I assume I will be able after watching this excellent video instruction by Hollis, thanks.
Good luck!
Very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make the video.
So simple but the chain clip was a bit of a challenge to unhook. Thanks for the easy follow directions.
You're so welcome--glad I could help! Thanks for subscribing.
Thank you so much! You explained and camera placement perfectly. I did it all by my little self :D
Great video... Exactly what I needed! Thanks!!!
I am a fumble-fingered klutz, so it took me closer to 15 minutes to replace the seal with the help of this exemplary video. Well done, and thank you.
You're welcome, Rick, and thanks so much for your kind words!
Very helpful! Thank you. I paid a plumber to do this easy fix last time!
I did it! Fantastic video! Thank you Hollis!
You're welcome! Thanks for commenting!
great video. Exactly what needed to help me fix this problem.
Thanks. Went to Lowes and came back home to fix in 5 mins.
Thanks - I feel like such a handy girl following your instructions.
You made it seem so easy, I think I can do it. Thanks in advance
Great job explaining how to do the replacement. You saved me from hiring a plumber!
I'm glad it helped! Thanks for subscribing, if you did!
Thanks, that 1/4 turn had me stumped. They should refer to this video on the package!
So easy! Thanks for the video! Really needed it!
The rock you have in your toilet to save water is mostly below the empty water line, that only saved water the first time you put it in there. If you want to save water put a quart or even larger sized water bottle full of water that extends all the way to the top of the full water line, that will save you water. Great video!
Thank you so much for making this video! That solved the problem 😃
I am replacing mine today I got the same ring at Lowe’s for $7.88 here in Michigan but my seal was pink my Kohler toilet is only seven years old and it’s completely deteriorated, (I use no chemicals ever) yours looked in much better shape and you had a much easier time clicking the canister off the other videos I watch they had a hard time they had to click it twice to the left to get that canister off without breaking the plastic pieces. Also the chain length can make the toilet run as well if the seal is OK.
Super helpful. Thank you! (BTW - thankfully I was able to find a replacement at my local hardware store.)
Great video. Got the job done with ease.
Awesome vid! Really helped me get my toilet fixed. Thank you!
You're welcome! Thanks for subscribing, if you did!
Thank you! Done and done after months of leaking :)
Thank you, I had a similar problem and thought I needed to replace the whole flush valve.
Great tip on cleaning the adhering surfaces with a paper towel!
Thank you so much !!
Saved me 200+ service call. Was able to follow your video and Ta Da !! 💯 complete !!
Thanks for your assistance. Well done video.
Woot woot! I fixed it thanks to your video!
Excellent video Hollis ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️
Thanks for this video. My existing yellow ring has a bubble formed on it. I thought initially it was part of the design until I went to the store and noticed new ones didn't have it.
My gasket has the same problem. I've had to changed it 3 times in 2 years. Each time it was the same problem. A bubble. I'm disappointed with Kohler
Extremely helpful, thank you so much.
You're welcome! Thanks for subscribing!
Same issue, thanks for helping me fix it
Thank You So Much!! I like the rock in the tank too... Easy way to save water🤠👍🏼👍🏼
