Drive it then
Is that noise a result of the intake camshaft endplay? The shaft getting right up on the bearing races right after getting adjusted. Then the increased rpm from racing the motor rejostled the camshaft back into it's happy place? Eh? Meh...
Hi guys I've contacted sales about my poster order it got returned to sender as I forgot to put my house number on the order 🙃 Please help if you can ❤
I still don’t have mine! Canada post are on strike!! 😢.. been waiting for weeks now!
What a great episode. The energy and friendship between you and tuning folk runs deep and you can tell and that made the episode so much more..
I hope Haltec understand how important Scotty is for their brand. The man is a solid dude and an excellent ambassador for the brand.
Him and MCM are the only reason I know who they are and if I was looking for engine management, I'd look for haltech just because of that.
This ^^^^
@@spruce1509 I saw Scotty one day at Time Attack at Sydney Motorsport Park. I got butterflies and felt like I just saw a celebrity. He is also a very tall dude.
I really enjoyed his technical talk this episode, talking us through what he is doing in an easier to understand way for the average car guy. Not giving the pros a lesson on how to tune, but giving us avg. car owners better understanding of what the tech does and what our own tuners may be doing.
If only Haltech put some time and effort into VQ25det support 😢❤
This Haltech bloke is the real deal. Power under the curve instead of chasing a peak number all day. AND never thought how important that first 100KW is. You want a car that acts and drives like stock. No weird issues or unwanted behaviour.
Tell me you don't work on rb's 😅 without actually telling me. Rb's eat bearings with low-end power.
@@richardvidler82It doesn't hit full boost until just over 5,000 I wouldn't call that low end power lol
Seeing the Tuning Fork work is like watching a wizard casting a spell
Someone should invent a device, like some sort of box that contains gears or something. This would allow for you to change the ratio of engine speed to wheel speed and put you further up the curve.
I’m sure someone is working on it.
Seriously though, does everyone just dawdle around at 40kph in 4th all the time? I hate cars that have weak top end and all bottom end. They are “better” but much less fun.
Scotty really is that dude
Man i love tuning fork so much hes sooooo smart and passionate
This long format detailed nerdy TuningFork stuff is simply amazing. Thanks for doing it this way!
Scotty does deep dive videos on the Haltech channel. Worth a watch if you like the nitty-gritty stuff.
The 240z series is one of the best on UA-cam. Love this car.
🥃
Marty's aim with the rags is unbeatable 😂
Needs to perfect his towelflick..
I reckon the off screen chuck the second time, that looked like it caught Moog by surprise, was the best, but love the meme!
Marty's ragtime blues?
True 😂
Rag snipe
Scotty real is the GOAT when it comes to tuner cars in a street environment.
100% it was the bolt clearance after removing the timing cover and then bolting the CAS back on. You need to space the CAS out to simulate the timing cover is still fitted. The CAS bolts just hit the cam gear bolts because the cover thickness has been removed. You will see metal swarf evidence.
CAS is auto-clearancing, just give it some time :)
Something definitely self clearanced lol
U need to run the spacers to space the cas out. Same happened to mine
@@traviswenning6079 no, YOU need to 😛
yep this is it as someone who has made the same mistake
One of life's mysteries.... how did Martin get perfect aim with towels?!
He's best mates with Moog.. doesn't that say it all? :D Love these guys
Years of practice!!!
His first job was towel boy down at the country club, not a prestigious job, but it builds character... And aim.
Years of throwing things in The Bin
I feel like I'm late to the party, but why's Moog roasting Marty at the start of every video?!?
That numberplate is a cool little easteregg. 2 is Ni and 3 is San in Japanese. Number plate reads "MCM - Nissan Z"
Yes, thats also why you see Nissan factory teams in racing usually run the number 23.
The march super turbo originally came with a Japanese number plate that was simply "23"
I have 23SIL available in QLD aus if interested
That's what he explained when he got the plate...
@@N911GT2 ohh my mistake, never saw that video.
Scott is such a class act. I’ve thought this for years, and he confirms it with every appearance.
yep, an episode with scotty tweaking and hitting page up, always winning. he's a helluva teacher, and an even better technician. his nickname is very fitting
I've seen Tuning Fork enthusiastic before, but this car makes the man positively giddy. Love seeing someone so happy while working.
It's because he's tuning a setup he can lean on without blowing it up.
Still the best mod channel out there..second to none ...music is 10/10 , production is 10/10
What did we do to deserve a car channel produced by audio engineers? Nothing and that's what makes it so good
It's impossible not to love Scotty. So well versed, good mannered, giving credit where it's due to other people and/or brands, and so so SO clever. The kind of dude I'd love to share a beer and a shop bbq with.
I love a GTR.
But I’m also at the age when I seen 240/260z driving about.
That car is the best of both worlds.
You guys make me smile when my life is getting me down.
Thanks guys.
GTR is sensible car. It will rope you in if you have an old moment. I have an old person car that will fuck peoples shit up on demand. I'll probably blow the engine up before christmas. She's getting old.
yeah the early Zed cars are IMO the best looking cars to ever come out of Japan. drop that modern power in it and it's the perfect mix of old fashion and new scoot
@@ghomerhustWhat about the Toyota 2000GT?
I just have to say I love you guys.
2 best mates who are as humble, nice and hard working as when they started doing youtube.
The guests in videos are equaly nice and professional.
I love your taste in cars, I love what you do to them and how you treat them.
Somehow, watching your videos doesn't feel the same as others, there is special emotion and connection.
You guys deserve all the good things that have happened to you and I hope you will never stop sharing with us.
Thanks a lot.
Hahaha "dual overhead crankshafts"! This is a perfect example of why i love this channel so much! I love how you guys don't take yourselves to seriously, zero ego! I'd expect nothing less from youtubes #1 4wheel drive channel! 😂
Not gonna lie, I got a bit emotional when you were talking about the wheels. Then you said Marty was your best mate and his little face lit up 😭No car show could bring a tear to my eye like you guys do. Massive love from the UK
Man, I remember watching the original build series all those years ago and instantly falling in love with this channel. You two have been an inspiration to me since the day I first watched you and watching these past few episodes have really reminded me how special this car is, as well as how special this channel is. There really isn't another car or another channel that makes me love cars quite like this.
Scotty's gone a long way. He was so timid at the very beginning, and now look at him. He's such an awesome dude, i learn so much every time he's in
Love watching Scotty giving Moog the tuner's lessons along the way, like dropping pointers about things, "do you know why this happened"... that is lesson-learning professionalism which makes the viewer think before giving the answer away. admittedly, you need to have a pretty deft knowledge of this stuff to pick up on the answers to the questions quickly, but Moog does an alright job.
The noise when you were adjusting the cam is because you didn't space the crank angle sensor to accommodate for the missing timing cover. The sensor will have been too close to the exhaust cam pulley and compresses the bearing in the sensor. I bet there was no noise when the cover was re-fitted.
I love watching Marty & Moog sweat when Scotty's tuning on the Dyno.
Marty with the Levorg, especially 😅
I've not seen Moog this anxious in years🤣
He got a dry mouth. Truly nervous.
Scotty really loves this car. It shows how much he enjoys Moog's company. I just love this UA-cam car community lately, Truly feels like a family we never had before during TV era. Thanks boys.
Good chance the noise was caused by the rear timing belt cover, when the front cover was removed the rear is now relatively unsupported, possibly came forward just enough to touch the back of the after market inlet cam gear.
A bit of a snoop around with a mirror and a torch MIGHT show witness marks on the cover to confirm.
Would pay to check in there anyway in case there is a bolt backing out and touching the gear, if that is happening and it does come out - going to be a bad day in the 240z.
Absolutely agree, ive been there.
Moot… I swear to god… I luv u more every video. Putting those wheels back on this beaut…. **chefs kiss**
Not only one of my favorite cars, but impeccable taste all around. Favorite build series hands down.
I remember when the Datsun 240Z came to the U.S. in the early 70's. I wanted one then but was only a kid and didn't have any money. Wish I could have gotten one, it's still probably my favorite car ever. That is so nice!
Congratulations you guys. This project looks incredible and your continued partnership is super admirable. You must be stoked!
You absolutely nailed the wheels, mate. Love the build, love the car, and I hope you enjoy it. I've always had a love for s30 chassis cars, and I've followed this build since the start. Enjoy it, you've earned it.
MCM at its finest, made my heart warm, just needed more Marty. Alway love watching tuning fork as well. What a joy.
Blair's anxiety was palpable during those final runs. God that RB sounds incredible. What a wonderful Z.
Without question, without exception this is the single most beautiful vehicle and build I have ever had the pleasure to watch and see from a distance. And the way you’ve filmed this series from the day you found it until now makes us feel like it’s all of our car. Mad love boys.❤
Garrett really are knocking it out the park with their latest turbos, that's awesome 😁
The car is sick. So sick. I don't really get emotional about cars very often. I got goosebumps when you put those rims on. You guys have come a long way. So sick
I love this so much. All the troubleshooting, explanations by the master, valuable lessons and awesome noises. This is what a dyno video should be. Thank you guys for the awesome content! Much love.
Great to see you both so brisk! You have come such a long way from those driveway EG Civic times, but I would love to see another EG in the show! Keep it simple!
This is easily one of the very best restomods ever. Iconic car, thoughtful updates, just stunning. Nicely done. 👌👍
You said it best Moog, the 240z is one of the most elegant and attractive sports cars ever made, up there with the Jaguar E-Type. ITs always been one of my dream cars, I hope they stay affordable until I can spend time with one.
with no cam cover on you need to space the cas from the cas bracket the same thickness as cover and cas gasket together, coulpe of flat washers job done, the sound is the exhaust cam shaft end float loading and unloading on the cas itself...
Obviously Scotty knows his shit so well, but I think the best part about having him on these shows is how well he articulates and explains what’s going on. True passion from the bloke.
That Datsun 240Z has to be one of my favourites. I’d be proud to own that.
Moog, I am so jealous. This car is not only beautiful, but it's powerful and drive-able. Add the memories of the build with your mates, it's irreplaceable.
I know that noise - either the CAS needs a spacer or the CAS has a dry bearing. Put your hand on it, you can feel it.
37:30 In this case, running relatively low boost there wasn't any trade off... top end improved a tinny bit and bottom end by a huge amount. I didn't realize you were only running 22 psi... a GT35R turbo isn't even awake at less than 30 psi. Your old turbo was sized for making 600+ horse power from 5,000 RPM to 8,500 RPM (nice broad power band... but it is in the stratosphere RPM wise) and you were using it on a car making 400 HP with RPM band of 5,000 RPM to 7,000 RPM. Your new turbo making gobs of power from 3,500 RPM to 7,000 RPM is MUCH better suited for your engine. Great to see you switch to a better setup!
I know that noise, the cas needs a spacer. OEM they have a rubber gasket and bronze spacers
Yep, I was puzzled at the comment: we only touched the cam timing. No you did not, you also touched the CAS!
Jupp.. and even using the cas with aftermarket ecu is madness. Rb26 has been solved a long time ago. They did non of the right things.
@@baldis12 The Haltech has a dedicated FPGA for trigger detection and it is truly industry leading - other ECUs struggle with the CAS, the Haltech it seems does not.
This is the noise 100%
We used spacers
So glad the dyno disaster wasn't as bad as it could be. The 240 Z is too nice to have it blow up. Modern turbo tech has come so far now, it's so awesome that you can put on a smaller turbo and still make the same or more top end power as you did before, especially with how much more you are getting so much earlier. What a great build. I hope she brings you many years of refined driving pleasure. She's a helluva nice ride. Be proud of what you have made everyone, it was totally worth it.
That poor Cam Sensor! No spacer on the timing cover and the CAS eats itself.
Self clearancing as it runs. That's why the noise gets less as you went.
Thats exactly what the noise is . The rubber seal on the front of the cam cover has spacers in it that spaces the CAS out. Done the same thing myself.
@mambastu I would run a couple washers to space it out properly. I now have a Franklin Performance hall sensor paired with the PRP crank sensor.
@@winstonUSMC Yes, I've ditched the CAS myself now. Went Link and the CAS provided a pretty noisy RPM signal. Crank wheel and pickup much better
I recognized the noise immediately. Common mistake.
I can't press the like button any harder for this video! The original 240z build series was the first full build series I watched back when I was in uni. This just makes me so happy to see the car come to this point, can't wait to see the next driving video!
I hope content with this car never runs out!
Feel your anxiety Blair. Nothing worse, to hear a noise at the dyno :(. Scott is a legend and from talking to him on the phone, yes he does man the helpline phone at Haltech. He is just the same as in the videos. What a friend to have. Love your work guys, even though you caused me to jump into a engine trans swap, on an old banger. cheers
This is the best 240Z.
An epic representation of an automotive icon.
Excellent work.
Amazing, my heart sunk when I thought you had broken the RB26. That difference in curve between these two turbo setups is just wild, I had no idea that turbos could still be improved on to such a degree within just a few years. Technology is crazy.
Congrats on realising your dream with this build mate.... What a beautiful thing, such a stunning soul it has and to all those that helped realise it, thank you for sharing your time and expertise with us. Enjoy this excellent, excellent car!!!
So happy I have a 240Z poster on the way. Such a win-win to be able to support the show and also get an awesome poster. Thanks Marty & Moog!
Another hearty episode, whenever I finish with a smile, its great. 🎉
THis is my favourite car. The whole concept of t he build, purity and antique value. Amazing reference video for the future. Well presented and explained for everyone to understand.
Had that same issue with an RB25 before. Turns out it was a hydraulic lifter sticking. Changed the oil and it went away for good!
Benny is such a great bloke, and his enthusiasm is contagious, I love how he knows your cars safe so he subtly pushes you to go further. I love when you bring these legends in.
Benny is a great bloke, too bad he's not here!
Scotty would probably agree that Benny is a good bloke though. However I think you had meant to say Scotty not Benny.
Moog calling Scotty during R&R: "Just 20 minutes bro. "
Scotty: "I'll do it in 15."
Also Scotty: "This is my jam bro, I'mma spend all afternoon nerding out."
Just something extremely emotional, when you fit the rims on the build. To finish it off and then watch it sit on its own shoes and move under it's own power. It's just such a beautiful thing to witness and experience.
Oil pressure bled down from lifters or timing adjustment when you went to lunch and when Scotty reved the engine pressure came back. 100% my theory to what happened.
Checks out. 3 of my hondas had a cam VVT gear that rattled on startup til the oil refilled it
solid cam followers and no VVT on RB26DETT.
@@frostyplays817 RB26 got no VVT unless custom installed, this is as factory as it gets.
Its very well known that rb26 can't get oil down from the head. They did NON of the mods to mitigate that. Allso that they are running oem cas is madness
@joealex65 yeah I'm aware, just comparing apples to oranges a bit. Same issue, different parts
You guys have built some epic nuggets over the years. But this has to be my absolute favorite in the fleet. Absolute dream car.
This is a masterpiece. Absolutely nailed this. I am super happy for Moog.
There's going to be one more episode, right? We gotta see and hear that thing drive! What a beauty.
I've been watching you guys since the beginning and to me Moog, that car really represents everything that you're about my dude.
1:42 Scotty is a legend even in the US btw who’s that Marty guy ? ❤
the first series I ever watched that got me into MCM was the original build of this car. This update is so good. Love the new wheels. Well done, Gents.
Between this and the Subaru. It seems like your most intensive builds always blow up
cause thats what builds with forced induction do mate :D thats why we love it
It's so weird, seeing Moog get his car to this point, after all that time and work, you feel .... proud? Is that how to describe it? Like you feel so happy for him, its like a mate finally getting his well earned 🏆
Moogs old set up - Danger Pizza
Moogs new set up - Calzone *chefs kiss
I was worried when the noise started. Now all looks well great job guys. Love the show you put on thanks
Perfect build Moog but a nice Ducktail would finish her in my eyes.
Totally agree. It would really balance out the front spoiler. Just looks a bit unfinished at the back at moment.
The genuine Watanabe's are truly icing on the cake on this one. Brought tears to my eyes ❤
But the clickbaity "dyno disaster" title and thumbnail on this one is unnecessary though we love you guys the way you are 😂❤
You guys should do a POV drive video with this car, actually you guys should do that with some other cars too.
I love the energy between these guys on the Dyno. Looks like such a fun time
That is insane what you gained from a newer turbo !
Not just a turbo, the ITB's and the exhaust manifold had a big play into that.
As someone who loves cars but has no idea about the nitty gritty about the tuning side, having someone like scotty in these videos explaining things in such an easily accessible manner is such a godsend! Makes it soo much easier to understand! An absolute pleasure to watch you guys as always 🙌🤙
Now we want to see it driving - fast.
The greatest automotive youtube channel in existence. Have offifically outlived and overdone some of the biggest names to ever come across the screen by simply staying true to your roots and not becoming the money hungry sellouts these other channels became. Look whats happening to alllll of them now adays! Long live MCM and long live the smaller guys!!
Let's be honest here... we are all waiting for Moog to get his jdm toyota supra so he can finally race that rx7!
It feels like years ago when they eluded to Moogs Supra sitting on the hill in the background (I wonder if it really was his, or just a sh*t steer)
Scotty's face during the power runs is priceless... He had soooooo much fun with this one. Give the man more!!!
I'm a simple man. I see MCM, I click like. Crazy to think I've been watching since before you even had the 240z. Thanks for the many, many years of entertainment guys!
I was on the same thought train as I started to read your comment, felt like my brain was skipping. I just saw Moogs face and clicked. No hesitation
Yeah man I've been watching since the nasty civic build on the driveway
I'm just simple. Thanks for the new video, guys.
I was thinking the same thing..I still remember the day episode 1 came out..these guys are legit why I am into cars and are also the reason I learnt to do mostly everything myself
Could not agree more!
Just the Fork I was hoping to see today!
You could fit a whole other car in that space between the dyno graphs of before/after, it's astounding.
My old single turbo 1J didn't party until 4,000rpm. I hated it. Totally get why you want to get power coming on down low and quickly. Scotty is just a pleasure to watch too, my goodness he knows his stuff. Haha
1j > tb though for spooling a turbo. Would be 5k on an rb for your turbo
Scotty is a legend, dude just schooled us in tuning for street cars 🤯 this will spread like wild fire 🔥 love your work tuning fork ❤
about that noise: I had a similar experience after a basic oil change. Started the car and my heart dropped as I heard "tack-tack-tack" proportional to rpm. Stopped, started again, same thing. Checked oil, all was good... Then I noticed I had a small speck of junk on my aux belt, might have been a small piece of paper towel or whatever. Cleaned it off. Started, no noise.
So might have been the same thing here and when Scotty revved it a little it just flew off or got squished or whatever, never to come back again.
Seeing the obvious passion for cars and performance not only from Marty and Moog but from the friends of the channel brings a huge smile to my face. The outcome of the dyno testing and setup was amazing and those wheels!!….. Bellisimo❤Thanks for another cracking build series gentleman👍
An absolute masterpiece of a driver's car. Jealous, but happy to see.
Beautiful. loved hearing some notes from See you at the end too, almost made me tear up seeing the finished car with that song.
Seriously, this content made my day!
Wow 415 HP that's awesome. That thing will be super quick. I had driven a 76 240z (orange with black interior) bone stock decades ago and can't even imagine how fun it would be to drive yours.
2:40 Yo that track!!!
This! What’s going on there! More!
The disaster in the title had me sweating bullets! I was waiting for the bang and I'm so happy she's okay! What a great video and a perfect car. The finish gave me goosebumps ❤
The third time they pull that "best friend" skit stunt, he'll actually be talking about Marty, but half the viewers will get tricked. 🙂
...and there was I, thinking "he's not gonna do it again" then bang!
this was the third time 😂
Getting old at this point
In the bin@@trevorvermeulen957
My favorite build you guys have done! absolutely beautiful, im a huge nissan guy and i have to say that car is prefect!! I love your show you guys!!
man this S30Z is wild, fav car of the float
Yep my belt was way tight and was making a noise similar. Also be careful of the bolts holding the cam gear as without the cover, it makes them longer and can touch the gear itself.
I started with mod max and the “shoe rule” I remember mrs daisy was a masterpiece
An absolute work of art 🥰 It makes me excited to get working on my 05 WRX Wagon I just bought! Congrats and the wheels had my arm hair standing up at the end! Been watching y'all since the beginning and y'all are so blessed to have such an incredible thing going!
